    • Solange Builds Up Her Indie Cred With Of Montreal On Jimmy Fallon

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 30, 10

You know, I’m not mad at Solange for busting out of her R&B shell and doing different things. Now, if she starts not shaving her underarms and looking like a circus worker (politically correct), then we will have an issue.

She joins up with Of Montreal and lead singer Kevin Barnes to perform a new song from their soon to be released album False Priest called “Sex Karma”. Besides that terrible performance art that was going on behind them [where is Raheem Devaughn's painter dude when you need him!?], they managed to make it to the end of the song. Solange was doing her good “yt girl sway” too. I think she has perfected it at home in her mirror for such a time as this.

YT Folks Shenanigans: Weatherman “Freestyles” Over “Roger That”…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 3, 10

So, ummm, who is planning my funeral? I’d like Lil’ Wayne to deliver the eulogy and please have Drake sing “Going Up Yonder” with Auto-Tune set on the highest level as possible so Nicki Minaj can do the “Robot” down the aisle and around my casket. I just can’t!

The sad part is, he was actually going IN with this LOL. Watch Baby AKA Birdman try to sign him and put him on a track with Jay Sean…

“If I Were A Boy” Meets Nashville Via Reba McEntire — I Always Thought This Could Go Country!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 26, 10

OK, you can’t tell Reba NOTHING with her delay LOL!! All she needed was a Beyoncé’s wind turbine and she would have been ON it, Creole-style.

Reba McEntire, the country legend that she is put a Southern drawl and tone on Beyoncé’s hit “If I Were a Boy” for Country Music Television’s “Unplugged” series. If you are vaguely familiar with Reba, check out my favorite Reba song, “Fancy”. Them country singers SURE can tell a story, I promise.

Classic Flashback: Michael McDonald – “I Keep Forgettin’”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Mar 29, 10

Yes, Michael McDonald was one of the originators of Blue Eyed Soul (alone and with the Doobie Brothers) — and dude still slays until this day. His Motown covers albums that he put out over the past couple of years were favorites of mine — he did a cover of “Stop, Look, Listen To Your Heart” with Toni Braxton that I played constantly! This performance above is from 2003.

Well, a lot of people may remember this groove from Warren G’s old hit “Regulators” — this is where they got it from.

If you want to add another slice of hilarity, check out the original video. I can’t embed it, but you can see how Michael McDonald looked in the 80′s. Gotta love it.

White or otherwise, this dude’s voice is more soulful than half of the “R&B singers” we have on the charts right now…it simply is part of the definition of the “sound” of soul in my opinion. And check out the female drummer…gon’ head.

Explore Music: The xx + DMX = Mash-up Hip-Hoppy Goodness

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Mar 5, 10

You probably haven’t heard of The xx, but you’ve probably heard their song “Intro” if you’ve watched TV or the Olympics this year — it’s been ubiquitous. Now, someone has taken the song mixed it up with an a capella of DMX’s “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” and my GOD does it work. This is so freaking on point that it is kind of spooky. And way better than anything Linkin Park and Jay-Z ever created. True story.

These two seemingly different genres really meshed in the final mix though, it’s crazy!

What do you think? I’mma try and make an mp3 of this ASAP and will post it here when I do, for those who are interested.

What Do We Think About Matt Morris’ “Love”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 5, 10

I tivoed this episode of George Lopez’s show tonight because I’d seen that Matt Morris was performing. I’d heard about him a couple of months before his now infamous performance with Justin Timberlake on the Haiti marathon on the Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah”, and hadn’t had the chance to properly acquaint myself with his music.

Ever since then though, his star has shot to fame. Some people were saying that Justin shouldn’t have used that platform to launch Matt (who is his new artist and is signed to his Tennman Tunes label along with Esmee Denters), but why not? Dude has an amazing voice! Haiti benefited from that duet surely because people have been talking about it ever since!

Anyway, this performance was pretty darn good! I mean, he sounds great! If anything, I think his nerves showed through at times, but I can only imagine what this sounds like in a more controlled environment. Him in an intimate venue with a crazy band is probably the hottest ticket around right now. His voice just leaped and whizzed around these notes, it was pretty fly for a white guy. For real! The tone of his voice seems pretty effortless.

What ya’ll think? Bandwagon jumper or not, I’m pretty sold.

The Turkey Hasn’t Digested Yet But Oprah Says It’s Christmastime!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 1, 09

Oprah, Queen of the World, featured some of our favorite R&B artists alongside some not-so-R&B artists on her show on Monday singing some classic Christmas music for the world to hear. Cause everyone in the world watches Oprah.

Alicia Keys had a duet with Tim McGraw, Mary J. Blige had a duet with Andrea Boccelli and Jennifer Hudson had a duet with Sugarland on “Oprah’s Holiday Music Extravaganza”.

Above you’ll see my favorite, which was Jennifer Hudson with Sugarland. I love Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland. That woman sings DOWN. I gotta say, she outdid J. Hud at the beginning, but then Jennifer Hudson started to pull it out towards the end. I loved their performance of “Silent Night” though. LOL @ Oprah tombout “Silent Night ain’t so silent no more!”

The rest of the performances, in order of my favorites, after the jump!

The YT Folks Still Dissing Yeezy & A New Mixtape Joint Drops…A Good Week For Him!

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Nov 13, 09

Brad Paisley & Carrie Underwood gets jabs in at Kanye at this week’s Country Music Association Awards. Taylor Swift coincidentally won all four awards she was nominated for. Of particular note is Darius Rucker’s win for New Artist of the Year, the first black person to ever win such an award from the Country Music Association. He’s become a bonafide country star.

Speaking of Kanye, a new track leaked from him today, rumored to be old and/or from a new mixtape. Definitely sounds unfinished, but someone may like it. It’s called “I’m So Appalled”. I’m so appalled at his Prada line! It’s nothing to write home about, but the beat is cool.

Music Video: Lady GaGa – “Bad Romance”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 10, 09

Yo for real, Lady GaGa is on some other stuff LOL! But I love it for the most part. I will say, it took me a minute to get into the song, and I’m still not 100% sure I am in to it…

The video just catapaults into the realm of art — she’s so abstract and creative with it, that I feel like you have to watch this 30 times to see everything she is symbolizing and even talking about in the lyrics and how everything correlates.

All this talk of her being the Devil and whatnot…I don’t know about all that but I do agree she has to be from another planet or something. Please page Neptune and please let them know they are missing a resident!

So we get no “Video Phone” yet with her and Beyonce’, but really, Lady GaGa prolly doesn’t even care LOL. Shouts to Laurieann Gibson for choreographing this crazy piece of work!

What do ya’ll think of the song/video/art/fashion/drama/ending/dancers/EVERYTHING!?

New Music: Michael Buble – “Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes)” Feat. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Michael Buble - "Baby (You've Got What It Takes) Feat. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (0)

One of the Twitter homies hipped me to this joint — and I like!

“Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes)” is an old Dinah Washington duet and I’d heard it before because I’m a lover of vocal jazz, but…I LOVE Sharon Jones and so I had to go find this.

I will admit that I’ve known of Michael Buble’, but I’ve never purchased any of his albums. I don’t mind his vocal stylings at all, and dude hits a CLEAN run in this song LOL! The ever soulful Sharon Jones is one of my favorite soul singers EVER right now, so to hear her and The Dap-Kings getting some major pop/crossover shine does my heart glad (though you may know the Dap-Kings from their work with Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse).

This joint is taken from Buble’s latest album Crazy Love which came out here in the States on October 9. I’m thinking about going to get it now and seeing what else he has to offer.
