    • Music Video: Whitney Houston – “Million Dollar Bill”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 16, 09

FINALLY the video that I personally have been waiting for!

It took me a minute, but I actually love “Million Dollar Bill”. At first, I wasn’t that impressed with Whitney Houston’s vocals at the beginning of the song…that “ohhh” was killing me. But the beat is just too infectious to ignore, even with its faux-Motown feel.

Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys arguably turned in one of the best uptempo songs of the album though, staying true to Whitney’s sound yet updating it. “Million Dollar Bill” is an excellent mix of classic Motown sounds with a dash of soul and Whitney’s classic pop-sheen.

The video is a pretty straightforward performance clip affair, with the focus on Whitney looking great. Her lipsyncing is off at times to me, and of course, the ORIGINAL diva hand is back, tracing them notes LOL.

I think my favorite thing about this video is all the wigs. It’s like they got Whitney’s wigs from all her different eras and put them all on in this one video. The “My Love Is Your Love” era, “The Bodyguard” era, I could go on.

But this is actually the most I’ve believed the story that everyone is circulating these days — “Whitney’s back!” Or rather, the Queen has put on all her royal garments, makeup and make-believe to make us believe that she never left.

      The Whitney Wrap-Up, Part 2

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 16, 09

Whitney pretty much wraps up a revealing, candid yet classy interview with Oprah yesterday in promotion of her new album. The most poignant parts of the interview were her talking about Bobbi Kristina and also how God is basically who she is talking about when she sings “I Look To You” (as if we didn’t know that though, especially with it written by R. Kelly).

At the end, there was a performance of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” in front of an audience full of Whitney fans. My only issue with this was yes, Whitney sounded really decent. However, it was because they lowered the key of the song so much LOL. It’d be impossible for her not to sound good singing it that low.

Overall though, it was a very honest and much needed sitdown. Whitney’s story is powerful and brings hope to a lot of people no doubt. I hope and pray she stays clean and continues on the road to recovery, “one day at a time,” just like she said. I’m rooting for her.

And of course, Bobby has had a few words to say. Watch ‘em here.

      The Whitney Wrap-Up, Part 1

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 15, 09

Well…she finally did it. Whitney Houston came clean, in MANY ways! Talked about lacing her blunts with cocaine, Bobby spitting on her, taking Bobbi Kristina with her to treatment…Oprah gave an EXCELLENT interview so far.

You know what I think? This was more so for HER as well it was supposedly for the benefit of her fans. There is nothing like confession. It’s good for the soul. That’s why the mental health field exists and why there are laws for confidentiality. Sharing makes you feel better.

I applaud Whitney though, because you know what, it really did make her seem more, I don’t know, human. Oprah was right on the money though with that “America’s national treasure” comment about “THE VOICE”. I really did feel like sometimes…”how dare Whitney mistreat this awesome gift!” People’s lives are their own though and you can’t help someone until they want to be saved.

As someone who has dealt with drug abuse and addicted family members and what not, my heart was so sad that she’d been through that. And Bobbi. And her mom! It was so crazy to finally hear it. But you can hear the 12 steps all up and THROUGH Whitney’s interview.

I’m so glad she’s together, and I pray she stays that way. After Part 2 airs, I will post up my album review as well.

      Thoughts?

Music Video: Whitney Houston – “I Look To You”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 12, 09

I LOVE this video ya’ll! Why? Cause it’s simple, classy and the focus is all on Whitney Houston. This is her testimony service LOL. She looks great and she is the single solitary focus during this whole affair. I’m sure the simultaneously shot “Million Dollar Bill” will be more of the usual R&B video fare, but for a moment, Whitney has stood up and claimed her legendary spot with this one right here.

Video Killed The Radio Star: Whitney Houston, The Comeback Kid?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 2, 09

Whitney does “Million Dollar Bill” on GMA

Well…what do we say? What don’t we say?

I for one am glad and happy Whitney Houston’s life has been put back together again. The grace of God has kept her. However, let’s not make the music secondhand to her inspirational story.

Sure, she’s been through a lot. And she’s back! Of course we are happy! But I can still look objectively at this music and her voice, and that’s what we judge our artists on. Since when did a comeback story outweigh the actual reality of a voice, well preserved or not?

The album can be manipulated and fixed and re-done in a closed, controlled environment. So while we may be able to enjoy that, a true lover of music can sonically hear the differences and inconsistencies in that medium.

“I Look to You” on Good Morning America

However, even a casual listener can hear what’s really going on in a live situation, and I think Whitney knows she is not able to produce anymore in that environment.

Case in point, news is already coming out that they possibly doctored the broadcast. Or the fact that she had to put a disclaimer on her performance, blaming it on doing a lot of talking on Oprah previously.

      “My Love Is Your Love”

Whitney IS the legend that everyone looks up to. And while everyone is happy she’s back, her stans will fight to the end and call you a hater if you say anything contrary to “Whitney is great!” Sure, her legacy was great, but will it remain that way? Even if she comes clean on Oprah and admits everything we already know, it doesn’t detract from the fact that this Good Morning America concert shows her vocals to be weak, damaged and almost barely there at times. Even her stage presence seemed haphazardly thrown together, with obvious attempts at crowd hyping replacing the fact that she can’t sing the same notes anymore.

Couple that with the backing track you can audibly hear and just the overall rawness of the vocals and you have cold hard facts. Whitney’s back but she’s definitely not better than ever. This is 25% of old Whitney — time has taken its toll, on her psyche, performance, voice, body, and everything else. We can accept what she offers if we choose because she’s built up a lot of good grace. But let’s not act like we can’t hear how bad she sounds NOW.

      “I’m Every Woman”

All that said, fans love a good comeback story, and the album is reportedly on pace to sell about 300K in the US alone, not even figuring all the worldwide sales yet. Her legacy will sell her album, and her upcoming Oprah performances will no doubt help as well. But this is what Clive Davis does, so are we really surprised?

      Covers: Whitney Does Ebony Magazine

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 31, 09

      Whitney Ebony Cover

America’s latest comeback kid Whitney Houston covers Ebony magazine in promo for her new album which drops TODAY by the way. I’m going to try and crank out a review of that for you all as well as Ledisi and some other joints.

Whitney looks airbrushed within an inch of her “The Preacher’s Wife” days, and I think they made her look like Bobbi Kristina more than anything, but no denying it, she’s back and she looks good.

I’m not mad at that outfit — is that a one-piece with a belt? ROFL get it Nippy!

I’m a little wary of them milking her “story” though — I mean, it’s obviously a selling point, but still…I’m not too sure how I feel about her “sharing” but NOT REALLY sharing. I just don’t want any vague references and tap-dancing around it. Just be about it! Go hard or go home Whitney!

Cop your October issue when it hits newsstands. I’m sure the photos will rival Michael Jackson’s latest 2007 covershoot.

Auntie Nippy Wants YOU to Buy Her Album!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 24, 09

Look at my Nippy!! She looks REALLY good in this photo. Her album cover shot makes her look old fashioned, wizened and reserved, while the above shot makes me think “I’m here to stunt all over you young hoes with my hot new Alicia Keys-penned single! TAKE THAT TAKE THAT!”

I must say — after listening to “Million Dollar Bill” a bit more, it has grown on me. Though I still stick by my original post. I may have been a little harsh, but overall, I’m starting to think that folks are doing the best they can with what they have. “Million Dollar Bill” is catchy enough, and the departure from all the tepid ballads she was releasing is enough to make me sit up and see what else this album might have. Though, I’m still not holding my breath!

So, the first “single” has dropped, and I got to tell you, I’m even less impressed than I was with “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”.

This song would have been on point probably if Raphael Saadiq had produced it, because Swizz Beats can’t give the song the right feel/swing that they were going for. From the opening note though, Whitney hits it, but not strong enough. It’s on the verses though where Whitney sounds like OLD Whitney.

It’s impossible to NOT compare a legend like Whitney to her previous body of work though, sad as it is to say that. Whitney is falling tragically short with all these attempts which makes me wonder if a “comeback” is even needed.

However, Alicia Keys + Swizz Beats — this is a prime example of when you shouldn’t mix business with pleasure. The harmonies and overdubs seem a bit disjointed on this song. Swizz isn’t from the right era to turn out a joint like this, and while Alicia is an old soul, this sounds like a demo she knew better not to put on an album. Her usual attempt at snagging a Motown feel and bringing it into the new millennium on this occasion doesn’t quite pan out.

It’s a breezy cut though, but…summertime is almost over. It’s a couple months too late for this song, and a couple years too late for Whitney’s voice. I wish her luck but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this album!

Mega New Music Post: Whitney, Monica, JoJo, The Roots, MJB, Teedra Moses + More

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 22, 09

Whitney Houston – “I Look To You” (Snippet)

This comes just as there was a listening party last night in NYC for her album. This R. Kelly penned cut is also the title of the album, and while it’s only 30 seconds, it’s enough to figure out that this is pretty much the vocal range of Whitney’s whole album. I guess we should just accept that and move on, yes?

Monica -”Lemme Know” Feat. Missy Elliott

This song is quite hilarious to me. Why? Because it starts off “You said you’d take me to the Jay-Z concert last night/I got a new outfit/I was ready to go baby/But you never came to pick me up/Where were you?/Where were you last night?”

The beat is dope, sounds like a Missy concoction of course and she’s all over it of course. Co-written by Jazmine Sullivan, and I thought I could hear her on the background vocals, because Monica’s voice is NOT that rich. I don’t hate this, I am just interested in hearing how a new Monica album will sound — I hope it’s balanced, classy and polished.

      Mary J. Blige – “Queen”

Mary is still cranking out these “I’M DA BEST!” tracks, and “Queen” is just another one in that progression. It’s about a 2 minute snippet, but it’s braggadocios Mary at her best if I’ve ever seen her. She clearly has a bone to pick with these tarts today LOL. Check these lines: “MJB/Your majesty/Show me to my throne so I can take my seat/Yeah MY SEAT/Shine my crown/That melody you singing/YEAH I MADE THAT SOUND!”

Wow. This sounds like…a Kelis song at the very beginning LOL. You know what I mean?

      JoJo – “25 to Life”

This ish right here is so hot to me. JoJo sounds great. I mean, really, this girl can just sing. It’s crazy how no one has even really tried to put her on bigger than she already is. This song is just crazy, and it’s all about the control that she shows vocally. Her voice belies her age. This is a tracked that’s leaked from sessions for her new album, which is yet to get a release date due to her well-publicized issues with her label Blackground. I hope they get it together soon…

David Guetta – “Sexy Bitch” Feat. Akon

French Superstar DJ David Guetta, riding high on the worldwide charts with his Kelly Rowland assisted song “When Love Takes Over”, worked with a bunch of different American artists on his next album. This song has leaked and while I enjoy the beat, I pretty much never enjoy Akon. And some of the lyrics in this song are just terrible! So yeah, just dance.

Amerie – “Why R U?” (Remix Feat. Nas, Jadakiss, Rick Ross & Kain)

Amerie’s voice is so plain and plaintive and really quite underwhelming most times, but I kind of liked “Why R U?” when it dropped. She goes back in over Whodini’s “One Love”, and added a handful of rappers to round out the remix. I get Nas & Jada. Rick, nah. And…is that Kain that used to be signed to Bad Boy?! Who is this Kain person!? LOL I need to know.

      Teedra Moses – “Everybody Rock”

Now I love Teedra Moses, but this didn’t really make my temperature rise. It’s a nice lil’ joint, but I want Teedra to come a little harder than this. I mean, after a couple of spins it settles into a nice groove that I can dig, but I was expecting more for her “grand return”, ya know? She still has her sound though, and that was missed. This may not make a dent outside of Twitter and the blogs though…

The Roots – “How I Got Over”

The Roots performed/debuted this live on Jimmy Fallon recently and it went so much HARDER than the studio version. I almost wish they’d cut a live album, because they are so good live. I was a little let-down with the recorded version…

Album Covers: Whitney Houston’s “I Look To You”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 15, 09

Whitney is really powering back — now we have an official album cover.

I Look To You drops in September, but I’m so serious, I really can’t stand that song they shipped out. “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”, while worthwhile in its message, really is SO underwhelming. I just hope that the other songs cater more to her new “vocal range” while still bring the drama and bombast one would expect from a Whitney Houston song.

However, she looks great. That face is BEAT as one my makeup friends would say HA! I’m sure that’s a combination of Sweet Minty Jesus, blood/sweat/tears by the people at MAC and some elbow grease from Photoshop.

I just wanna know if Bobbi Christina is getting a check by doing background vocals? That would make me excited too LOL. Spotted at Concrete Loop!
