    • What Do We Think: The Preatures Ask “Is This How You Feel?”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 9, 13

      preatures

Discovered this lovely track by new Australian band from Sydney called The Preatures, and they describe themselves as a “Gothic Soul / rock and roll band”, according to their Tumblr.

“Is This How You Feel?” is an easily enjoyable song, that features a nice pocket rhythmically, a relaxed and effortless vocal by female vocalist Isabella Manfredi, some great harmonies and some excellent guitar work. I look forward to hearing more from The Preatures. They have an EP out now as well, called Shaking Hands, which is available here.

Thoughts? I thought this was a great find and wanted to share it with my fam!

What Do We Think: Alex Isley Makes A Trip To “The Other Side” A Smoothed Out Affair

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 11, 13

alex isley the other side artwork

One of my favorite indie artists, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and placing into a movie I worked on, “The Last Fall”, has released a new song that is the first look at her upcoming album DreamsInAnalog. Alex Isley is a singular talent in a crowded field of musicians and artists — she’s a self contained singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/producer that crafts amazingly lush, vibrant, downtempo and emotional accessible gems such as the new single “The Other Side”. If you like Jhene Aiko and Stacy Barthe, chances are you will dig Alex Isley.

One of my favorites (and the one that I placed) is “Set In Stone”. If you haven’t heard that, listen to it here.

Hit Alex up on Twitter and let her know where you heard her new single at!

What Do We Think: Robert Raimon Roy Searches, Finds & Loses The Ideal Woman In “Axela”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 9, 13

Randomly discovered this track by a relatively unknown singer named Robert Raimon Roy. His track “Axela” is a play on the name “Alexa” — as in, he was expecting to meet someone named Alexa, and instead, is met by her by the true her. Makes sense?

We make expectations in this day and age of computer love, for example. Once you meet in person, however, things are what you’d imagined they’d be. Not bad, not wrong, but different from the image that we may have conjured in our heads.

The visual is a great match after you’ve found an explanation for the song itself. The video premiered on this site here and also had an explanation from the artist himself:

“The song is about projecting the woman within on the woman without,” Roy writes in an email. “In this scenario, a real girl named Alexa becomes the illusory presence ‘Axela.’”

The song’s haunting melody, lean instrumentation, and thick harmonies are immediately captivating in my opinion. Roy offers a darker take on R&B/soul, in the vein of a Frank Ocean, but offers much more along the lines of vocal capability with his falsetto, a la Justin Timberlake. It’s the weird congregation of two types of the two mainstream types of “R&B” that seems to grab most of the public’s attention these days.

It’s a great song that stands alone. Apparently Roy doesn’t like to be confined to more than one genre or style, after taking a listen to his most recent album Le Tigre Blanc, but this song alone is great and I’m glad to have found it. Check out his site here. Thoughts?

What Do We Think: Short Stories Drop A Gem “On The Way” To A Growing Partnership

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 13

One of my favorite producers from the UK, Sampha (SBTRKT, Jessie Ware), has partnered with producer Koreless (Jacques Greene) to form the experimental duo Short Stories. They dropped the single “Let It Go” with a B-side song called “On The Way”, and that’s the visual that we are being treated to above.

The video is pretty much a straight-ahead affair, featuring child actors as the younger dopplegangers of Koreless and Sampha, playing instruments and cavorting about in balloons with flying instruments headed towards them as well.

However, it’s not about the visual. It’s really about the vibe of the song. The downtempo electro affair is perfect, and is similar of what the two have done with the others talent that they have worked with. It may not be your cup of tea, but give it a spin. Don’t let the video dissuade you from listening to something new. The UK has been really killing the past few years, and I’m a huge fan of SBTRKT. What do you think?

What Do We Think: Lion Babe’s “Treat Me Like Fire” Should Be Handled With Care

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 15, 13

My good friend Durand Bernarr (@alcoholharmony on Twitter, if you’re looking for some good sanging!) put me onto Lion Babe during a trip to Los Angeles, and I haven’t stopped listening to this song EVER SINCE. I love “Treat Me Like Fire”. She’s like a mashup of Rihanna, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, J*DaVeY and some other stuff I can’t quite put my finger on.

The track for this joint is “fire” indeed — and the video is the cherry on top of an already imaginative yet solid and soulful song that stands up as fantastic all by itself.

It’s a bit abstract but yet congeals as a very solid introduction to Lion Babe (Jillian Hervey + Lucas Goodman), and I definitely am looking forward to more from them. Jillian Hervey is also actress Vanessa Williams‘ daughter, if you didn’t know. She is definitely blazing a musical path much different from her 80′s pop star mother.

Go cop this song on iTunes — I did. First actual MP3 I’ve purchased in quite a while.

What Do We Think: Ryan McDermott Wants To Buy Your Ticket To “Paradise”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 14, 13

I haven’t been able to find much about Ryan McDermott, aside from the fact that he’s a new signing to G.O.O.D. Music and was signed on the spot after a personal audition for Kanye West himself.

What I do know is that I’ve heard about this song for a while and finally tracked down a video for “Paradise”. Mr. McDermott submits his slinky, stacked vocal, futuristic version of Blue Eyed Soul with that the stabs and kicks that the music bed for “Paradise” is. I like this joint. His vocal is singular to me, and stands apart from the heavy feel of the track. The slight nasal and high timbre of his voice is a great counter to the kicks and subsonics that anchor this track.

In the video we see him loving and leaving, leading us to think that “Paradise” is only a one night stand and the morning sex that follows afterwards. It’s a great musical introduction to Ryan’s sound I believe, and I look forward to what he has to offer with the assistance of Mr. West. If this track is any indication of Ryan’s original sound, the two pairing up might produce some interesting R&B for our ears.

What Do We Think: Watch The Duck Get It “Poppin’ Off” With Their Blend Of Dub Step & Trap Rap

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 10, 12

Do you like dub step? Well, coming out of ATL (by way of Montgomery, AL) is a new group of 3 DJ’s/instrumentalists called Watch The Duck (Jessie Rankins, Eddie Smith & Jonathan Wells). They call their music “trap step” — trap rap + dub step mixed together. I’ve also heard it called soul dub step. In any case, it’s fairly interesting.

Take some simple, dumbed down dub step progressions, add some James Brown posturing with the vocals, throw in some popping and locking, and you have the “Poppin’ Off” video that you see above. In my mind, it’s like Outkast, James Brown and Soulja Boy had a illicit affair with Skrillex.

Though not the most musically invigorating or innovative thing ever, I think it’s an interesting union of different styles. Dub step as a whole has become homogenized and mainstreamed (as well as “trap” music), but I for one would have never really thought to put them together. It’s ultimately not that big of a stretch, and kind of works on some levels.

Gotta give it Watch The Duck for this one — I wonder how far outside of the Georgia state line this will progress. If you’re intrigued, you can listen to their mixtape Rub-A-Dub (which they say is R&B + dub step = Rub-A-Dub) on SoundCloud here. And also check their official website. What Do We Think: Get Those Ears “Wide Open” And Check Out @Choklate

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Oct 18, 12

One of the Northwest’s best kept (but shouldn’t be) secrets, Choklate, has put out a new EP entitled Fly. And that’s exactly what she, and this song, is!

“Wide Open” is a skate-night worthy jam (as clearly evidenced by the above video), and Chok’s smooth background vox and the tracks horns evoke a time of funk and soul that isn’t seen much these days on the radio.

We’ve all been head over heels in love, and this track is a spotlight on that feeling and what happens and comes along with it. Just like we trip and fall in love, some folks trip while getting their skate on to a jamming ditty like “Wide Open”.

I personally can’t skate a lick, but watch Choklate do it and go get that EP. It features Phonte’ and also Musiq Soulchild. You won’t be disappointed — Choklate’s last album is one of my favorite soul indie releases in the past couple of years as well.

What Do We Think: Follow Penguin Prison’s Instructions To The Letter And “Don’t F**K With My Money”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

I’m with Penguin Prison. “Don’t F**K With My Money”, indeed!

I discovered this track a few months ago and have had it on repeat. Despite more true words never being spoken EVER, the song itself is a catchy, dance-y good time, replete with synths and chunky bass lines. Penguin Prison’s name itself is a bit jarring (why would you want to imprison penguins?!), this song definitely gave me “Happy Feet” (pun intended).

I got the chance to see them live a couple of weeks ago for Miike Snow here in Portland, and they were amazing. High energy, the songs translate well live, and there were a bunch of people there I’m sure that had never heard of them, but I think they left there fans of the group. They also have a great song called “Multi-Millionaire” which is dope, too. Chris Glover, who is “Penguin Prison”, also got his stripes doing remixes for such groups as Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds and more. The smooth electro-pop goes over easy and is not as hectic as David Guetta and insert random powerhouse vocalist here. He handles the vocals live well and is engaging enough to keep you interested in what funky slice of music they will offer up from song to song.

If they come to your town, stop through and check them out. Cop their self-titled album as well! Tell them Tha Feedback sent ya!

What Do We Think: Tara King Doesn’t “Give A F_ck”; Do We?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 28, 12

One of my friend’s sent me Tara King’s EP Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love, and the standout cut for me was the song “I Don’t Give A F_ck”. I’ve had it in rotation for a couple of weeks, so I thought I’d share it with you all to see what you thought of it!

“I Don’t Give A F_ck” was the instant standout to me on her project. It’s just a catchy urban track with a nice level of braggadocio that I haven’t heard come from a female singer. Whoever produced this beat went in, and I love the subtle changes in the music bed throughout. Tara King is a decent singer, but this particular track is all about swagger and swing, and I love the line “Don’t matter how the cards fall, I’mma play my own game…I call it solitaire.”

Tara’s worked with some heavy hitters as an artist and also as a songwriter, and just recently came off the road from singing backgrounds with Lupe Fiasco. This is her first foray into solo stardom. Give it a listen and offer up some feedback as only we know how!

You can check her on Bandcamp, Tumblr, Twitter, and get the free download of Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love here.
