    • Old Money > Dirty Money Any Day of the Week With “Mamaseh”; What Do We Think?

Written by The IPS in Blogs, Videos on Feb 26, 10

My daily traverse across the Internets brought me to this Old Money video for their song called “Mamaseh”. Old Money is a NYC/Vancouver, CA based but coat of many colors originated group that makes music that’s a mashup of many different genres — hip-hop, UK grime, dancehall, funk, Afro-beat and more. Me likey.

In the video for “Mamaseh”, Old Money surreptiously then overtly follows around a “New Yorker”, who, like most NY’ers, is in his own bubble as he goes about his evening. Then he begins to realize he is being followed…before coming to the realization that it is all in his head. Or is it? Paranoia is a dish best served cold.

“Mamaseh” is all beats and rhymes and while it may take me another few hours to decipher all the words, the beat is infectious and all-encompassing. I love these kinds of rhythms, as evidenced by our “From Kampala to K-Town” mix which is being featured for a free download. It gets in your spine and soul and just makes you want to dance, and I don’t mean no damn Stanky Leg either LOL!

If you like this joint, it’s available on iTunes and you can get more info about Old Money at their Myspace. I like my money old rather than dirty, sorry Diddy!

What Do We Think About Anjulie’s “Addicted2Me”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 19, 10

I like this song! Anjulie is a Canadian artist that took over the world by storm with her song “Boom” and now has released another excellent visual from her self-titled debut album; this time it’s the song “Addicted2Me”.

The song is repped well by the visuals — an ex-beau can’t seem to escape Anjulie, as she haunts his daytime travels and he sees her in everything — on the street, in billboards, on walls, everywhere. His distraction ultimiately leads to his demise as he is caught off guard by a passing car and…Anjulie.

Nice beat, great lyrics, especially that first verse. I’m liking it! What say you?

What Do We Think About Ben Harper’s “Lay There & Hate Me”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 16, 10

Ben Harper with his backing group Relentless7 turn in a blues/funk jam for the new millennium with this crazy psychedelic and colorful video straight out of an acid-induced James Bond opening sequence from the 70’s in my opinion.

Ben Harper is a Grammy award winning artist and has done a lot in the rock and blues category. He’s not well known though by many, despite his long list of achievements. I lump him with artists like Jonny Lang and Robert Randolph, who are both also excellent singers/guitarists.

“Lay There & Hate Me” is taken from his last albumWhite Lies for Dark Times, and features been bluesy-yet-definitely-rock influenced vocals with some interesting rhythmic changes by Relentless7. I can dig it. The overdrive on the vocals gives a nice touch as well.

Something different, what do you think?

What Do We Think About Mia Doi Todd’s “Open Your Heart”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 11, 10

I’m escaping from Rihanna today — go with me.

I wasn’t too familiar with the name Mia Doi Todd outside of the occasional random indie blog or website I may have perused and/or random indie friend sending me a track, but I saw this new video of hers that was directed by the acclaimed Michel Gondry and I had to take a minute to watch!

The choreography mixed with the visuals of everyone wearing the two toned clothing was pretty striking, especially against the urban and stark LA backdrop — of normal places.

The visuals are timed with the musical accompaniment, and Mia Doi Todd’s voice is haunting and yet simply beautiful. The song is an exercise in minimalist thinking almost, while the visuals are complex yet also seemingly “easy”. Great composition across the board.

This song is pretty dope though — I’m loving it. The song is taken from her latest album Gea, which was released in 2008. Check her website if you want to learn more.

What Do We Think About Ashlyne Huff’s “Heart of Gold”?

Written by YTMatt in Blogs on Feb 7, 10

I’m torn. In Ashlyne Huff’s debut single “Heart of Gold”, there are some real hits, but many misses, and I’m left wondering whether or not I like it. I just can’t decide.

For some reason, they’ve decided to take this singer-songwriter and turn her into a pop star, rather than toning it down a few notches and keeping her to her roots as a more typical singer-songwriter. I think due to her image, positioning, and such, she ends up coming off as a pop star wannabe, which is a shame because there’s a lot of talent there.

Why did they focus so much on the smoke-and-mirrors than the artistry?

What Do We Think About Matt Morris’ “Love”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 5, 10

I tivoed this episode of George Lopez’s show tonight because I’d seen that Matt Morris was performing. I’d heard about him a couple of months before his now infamous performance with Justin Timberlake on the Haiti marathon on the Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah”, and hadn’t had the chance to properly acquaint myself with his music.

Ever since then though, his star has shot to fame. Some people were saying that Justin shouldn’t have used that platform to launch Matt (who is his new artist and is signed to his Tennman Tunes label along with Esmee Denters), but why not? Dude has an amazing voice! Haiti benefited from that duet surely because people have been talking about it ever since!

Anyway, this performance was pretty darn good! I mean, he sounds great! If anything, I think his nerves showed through at times, but I can only imagine what this sounds like in a more controlled environment. Him in an intimate venue with a crazy band is probably the hottest ticket around right now. His voice just leaped and whizzed around these notes, it was pretty fly for a white guy. For real! The tone of his voice seems pretty effortless.

What ya’ll think? Bandwagon jumper or not, I’m pretty sold.

Something Different: What Do We Think About Marina and the Diamonds?

Written by YTMatt in Blogs on Jan 18, 10

So far in 2010 we’ve got Ke$ha, who’s more like a little kid in Lady Gaga’s her mother’s high heels, and we are left a hope for something more inspiring to come from the pop genre.

When the dust has settled and we vaguely remember that $ girl, we’re going to be coming up with who left their mark on 2010, and I’m feeling Marina and the Diamonds (born Marina Diamandis, hence the name) so much that I’ll go out on the limb, in January, to say that you can bet her album will be on many top of 2010 lists. She might not sell a ridiculous amount, might not be a phenomena, but her brand of pop music far surpasses people who were once featured on a Flo-Rida album.

Something Different: Crookers Has The “Remedy” With The Help of Miike Snow

Written by The IPS in Blogs, New Music & Reviews on Jan 15, 10

Crookers is an Italian production duo (electro-pop/electro-house/hip-hop) that most Americans would know of from Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N Nite” remix that received a lot of airplay and I believe was also used in a video version. They’ve done a lot of other work on remixes, but they have a debut album coming out on March 8, and it will feature such artists as Spank Rock (one of my faves), Pitbull, will.i.am, Kelis, Major Lazer, Kid Cudi and more! I’m looking forward to it, but I’m random like that.

In this video for their song “Remedy”, they show some, well, theiving kids running the city taking “souvenirs” to in the end spell out “Crookers” and “Remedy” using the various riff raff and miscellaneous items that they’ve snatched. Often times right out of people’s hands.

The song also features Miike Snow, which is a Swedish group composed of famed producers Bloodshy & Avant, who’ve produced and remixed for such artists as Britney Spears, Madonna and Kylie Minogue. Singer Andrew Wyatt rounds out the group. [Bonus: Check out Mark Ronson's remix of their song "Animal" which I randomly love as well!]

What do you think of this video/song? The poor dog looked so SAD when they snatched his chew toy! Where is PETA? LOL.

What Do We Think About José James?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 4, 10

José James – “Save Your Love For Me”

José James is an American born Jazz singer who is gaining note for mixing his jazz with soul, mostly because his voice sounds more suited for an adult contemporary/R&B world. Doing his part to propel jazz into the next decade, José’s voice is smooth and comes across effortlessly. Newly signed to Verve here in the US, he was signed initlally to an indie UK label initially, Brownswood Recordings.

Over the past year, his star has grown as he’s traveled the world touring, meeting new people and working on new music. The song “Save Your Love For Me” is a Nancy Wilson cover and is taken from his new album Blackmagic, which drops February 1st, 2010. Even though he sounds like an old soul, dude is in his mid-20’s. That’s crazy!

If you want more info about José James, check out his website and Myspace. There’s also some other joints you can listen to for free. What do you think? I don’t want to make any comparisons — I want to see who his voice reminds you of…

What Do We Think About Calvin Harris’ “You Used To Hold Me”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 24, 09

Calvin Harris is a Scottish artist who has hit big in the UK and other parts of the world with his pop/synth/electroclash sound, which mixes some disco influences with his quirky vocals and catchy songs. “You Used To Hold Me” is the latest singel from his album Ready for the Weekend, and it’s so catchy that I thought you all might like it.

The video is like a car show on acid LOL. Lots of dancing women amongst Calvin DJ’ing in front of a monster truck. How many times has your heart been broken, feeling like you got ran over or hit by a truck? That’s what I got from this video, but I’m sure your interpretation may be something else.

Calvin produces, writes and sings most of his own stuff and has also worked with people like the Kylie Minogue and UK rapper Dizzee Rascal. I had his first album which someone let me have, but I need to catch up. What do you think?
