  • What Do We Think: Follow Penguin Prison’s Instructions To The Letter And “Don’t F**K With My Money”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

I’m with Penguin Prison. “Don’t F**K With My Money”, indeed!

I discovered this track a few months ago and have had it on repeat. Despite more true words never being spoken EVER, the song itself is a catchy, dance-y good time, replete with synths and chunky bass lines. Penguin Prison’s name itself is a bit jarring (why would you want to imprison penguins?!), this song definitely gave me “Happy Feet” (pun intended).

I got the chance to see them live a couple of weeks ago for Miike Snow here in Portland, and they were amazing. High energy, the songs translate well live, and there were a bunch of people there I’m sure that had never heard of them, but I think they left there fans of the group. They also have a great song called “Multi-Millionaire” which is dope, too. Chris Glover, who is “Penguin Prison”, also got his stripes doing remixes for such groups as Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds and more. The smooth electro-pop goes over easy and is not as hectic as David Guetta and insert random powerhouse vocalist here. He handles the vocals live well and is engaging enough to keep you interested in what funky slice of music they will offer up from song to song.

If they come to your town, stop through and check them out. Cop their self-titled album as well! Tell them Tha Feedback sent ya!

What Do We Think: Tara King Doesn’t “Give A F_ck”; Do We?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 28, 12

One of my friend’s sent me Tara King’s EP Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love, and the standout cut for me was the song “I Don’t Give A F_ck”. I’ve had it in rotation for a couple of weeks, so I thought I’d share it with you all to see what you thought of it!

“I Don’t Give A F_ck” was the instant standout to me on her project. It’s just a catchy urban track with a nice level of braggadocio that I haven’t heard come from a female singer. Whoever produced this beat went in, and I love the subtle changes in the music bed throughout. Tara King is a decent singer, but this particular track is all about swagger and swing, and I love the line “Don’t matter how the cards fall, I’mma play my own game…I call it solitaire.”

Tara’s worked with some heavy hitters as an artist and also as a songwriter, and just recently came off the road from singing backgrounds with Lupe Fiasco. This is her first foray into solo stardom. Give it a listen and offer up some feedback as only we know how!

You can check her on Bandcamp, Tumblr, Twitter, and get the free download of Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love here.

What Do We Think: Is The Sky “The Limit” For Kirby Maurier?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 1, 12

Got this joint in my inbox, wasn’t really feeling it 100% at first…but then I found myself singing it in my head repeatedly. So I downloaded it and put it in my Google Music and now I listen to it constantly!

Kirby Maurier’s voice is reminiscent of such high pitched yet powerful in their own right female vocalists such as Denice Williams and Michel’le to me. “Sky’s The Limit” starts off as semi-serious in tone, but the beat is instantly catchy. Kirby launches into her vocal range after she starts with a slow and low opening line. Then, the hook drops and you realize that her tremulous voice is NOT a game.

What do you think about this song? If you like it, check out her EP “Class of ’96″, which you can get here as a free download. I’d suggest copping it and forming your own opinion on that. Come back and share with the rest of the class in the comments section though!

I Might Have To “Pass” On This New Timbaland Joint

Written by Donovan in Videos on Sep 23, 11

I am a Timbaland stan. I defended him when he started to go pop. I turned a blind-eye when he said he was over Hip-Hop and R&B. I even forgave him when he almost ruined Chris Cornell‘s career. But this right here? This joint right here? I don’t know Tim. I just don’t know.

“Pass At Me” featuring Pitbull is the first single from Tim’s upcoming LP Shock Value III (Sidenote: When did artists start making sequels to albums? This ain’t the movies!) The song is in line with the current trend of dance music riding the airwaves and would be perfectly fine if it was a Pitbull song. The problem is that it is a Timbaland song FEATURING Pitbull, but you wouldn’t know it from the drab euro-pop synths. Tim is known for switching up his style and adding different sounds to his repertoire. The problem is that I don’t hear any Tim in this at all. No funky 808′s, no innovative loops, no humdrum lyrics. Well the lyrics are still bad but that’s the only bit of classic Tim left. I’m not feeling this and it makes me worried for what this album is going to sound like. Time will reaveal. Ok I’m done complaining. Readers, what do we think?

What Do We Think: I “Shoulda” Posted Geno Young’s Song For You A While Ago But It’s Here Now!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 24, 11

I’m probably a little tardy for the party with this one, but someone sent this to me via FB the other day and I found myself hitting repeat on it a couple of times!

Indie artist Geno Young’s “Shoulda” is taken from his last album Ear Hustler, and while I don’t know much about him or his music, this joint tells me that I “shoulda” been on to him a while ago.

Geno’s voice is a little lost in the business of the track, but it still shines through. The video simply illustrates that when you see something you want, go and get it before it’s too late.

I’m going to be digging into the Houston, TX natives catalog a bit more and see what other gems I can find, but if you like this joint, pick up his Ear Hustler album at CDBaby now!

Jay-Z and Kanye West Stunt Their Swag To A Classic “Otis” Sample

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 22, 11

Although I am behind on posting this video, I wanted to take a chance to share the video for “Otis” from the superstar collaboration album Watch the Throne from Jay-Z and Kanye West. After watching this video I had one question: What recession?

While us peasants are busy scraping together coins to make it through another tough year, Jay-Z and Kanye West cut off the doors to a suped-up Maybach and drive around with beautiful women and playing with fireworks. How I envy the rich. If you were looking for something else to happen in this video, you can stop reading. Nothing else happens.

As for the song, it’s another ode to stunting as if it were a habit. There seems to be something ironic about the whole nature of this song, treatment of this video, with the “Try a Little Tenderness” sample from Otis Redding. These rappers need to find some new hobbies. So readers, what do we think?

What Do We Think: Bridget Kelly Is “Thinking About” Making It Big

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 19, 11

Bridget Kelly is a new artist signed to Roc Nation and “Thinking About You” is slated to be the first single from an EP set. I spotted this acoustic version over at ConcreteLoop. This was originally out as a Frank Ocean song but it seems like it has been given, or was originally intended for, Bridget. What makes me happy about the change is that we actually have a decent singer to cover the notes in the chorus. You tried it, Frank.

What can I say about Bridget: she’s cute and her voice is nice. I need to hear more before I get invested, but I definitely think this acoustic take on this song could be added to my collection of mellow love songs to listen to while it’s raining out. Rumor has it that The-Terror (no.), Ne-Yo (meh?), and James Fauntelroy (yay!) have all contributed to the album. With the Illuminati behind her, she can’t fail! Right?

Consequence Is Super-Stylized With His “Comic Book Flow”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 18, 11

Consequence has dropped a new video for “Comic Book Flow” off the mixtape Movies On Demand 3 which is due out August 19, 2011.  If you’ve been paying attention to Consequence – why would you? – you would know that he claims that this is going to be the most controversial thing to come out of hip-hop in a while and promises to call out Kanye West and Pusha T to name a few. Boo-hoo.

Honestly, the only reason why I am posting this is because I think that this video is super slick. It kept my attention enough as a recovering comic book nerd to keep me from hitting X, and you all know how much I love to do that. To address the music: the beat thumps, but I don’t think the lyrics matter at all. I have a hard time with rap lyrics because I often find them wafer-like – light, fluffy, tasty for a minute, but after the minute passes you’re still hungry. This isn’t true for everything of course, but you have to really move me if I am going to buy/download your album. (I’m not talking to you Big Sean. That was an accident!)

Lupe Fiasco Keeps It Fresh and Poppy In “Out Of My Head”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Jul 1, 11

Lupe Fiasco is serving up his new video for his 3rd single “Out Of My Head” from the album Lasers. This single was an obvious choice for its crossover appeal as it is the most pop-leaning song on the album. However, the fiasco on top of Lupe’s head (a MedusAfro as I’ve coined it) and Trey Yellz on the hook, are all on my list of things that I decided I couldn’t deal with today. You maybe stronger than me though.

The video in itself has a cute treatment as Lupe sees his girl in every woman he comes into contact with and their is a touch of humor to keep it fresh. As I watched the video, the only thing I could really think of is whether Lupe truly wanted to put this out or if he made a deal with the label that they would put out the hair raising “Words I Never Said” as long as he went with the program.

I am starting to grow tired of Lupe, this album is definitely on the bottom ranking from his former LPs, and his political rantings have grown cumbersome to my ears. Although, I know this is not particularly a political blog, I would love to get your feedback on whether Lupe’s political theory draws away from his music. Not many artists can be taken seriously for their music and also push a political agenda. So what do we think?

Here is a link to Lupe’s stint on The O’Reilly Factor if you missed it.

The Foreign Exchange Wants To Give You “All The Kisses”

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jun 24, 11

    550.jpg

The Foreign Exchange is releasing a new live CD/DVD collection Dear Friends: An Evening With The Foreign Exchange and “All The Kisses” is one of the studio tracks on the album which features vocals from Paris & Amber Strother of KING.

Don’t let the opening chords fool you; “All The Kisses” is a smooth, midtempo cut that builds up to a sensual burn that leaves you wanting to press repeat. Phonte‘s vocals are mellow and full bodied. The additional vocals complement the slinky production that’s a touch of Dwele, a dash of Motown, and a hint of Stevie Wonder. This track is a definite keeper to add to your date night playlist. Pick up the album featuring this track on June 28, 2011 from iTunes.

And if you’re in Portland, OR or nearby, stay tuned for a giveaway to see The Foreign Exchange live in July!
