    • The Roots Bring The Creative “Fire” With New Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 26, 10

OK, so Rik Cordero put up an explanation with this new The Roots video for their song “The Fire”, but honestly, I was eating when I watched it and I just couldn’t even sit through this long enough to understand what is going on. Will one of ya’ll help me out? I am lost…and grossed out, really. Cannibals, and soldiers, and World War 2, and….my brain is moving to slow on this Monday to figure this out.

      Thanks kindly!

“The Fire” chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe. After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group — led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore — forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor…and food. The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival. “- Rik

The Roots Share Share A Tale About How They “Got Over”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 21, 10

The BBGUN-directed visual for The Roots‘ latest single off the album of the same name, “How I Got Over”, has dropped. Album out tomorrow (6/22). They also performed this joint the other night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, with help from the dude from My Morning Jacket and also the Jazzyfatnastees. Nice!

The visual itslef is a bit stark and dreary. I had to stop watching when the three-legged dog was hopping down the street *cues the sad pet Sarah Mclachlan commercials* LOL.

Are you copping the new Roots album tomorrow? Or did you spend all your money on Drake?

New Music Post: Drake, Estelle, And The Roots

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 24, 10

Drake – “Unforgettable” Feat. Jeezy [Download]

Another down-tempo, R&B ish flavored joint from Drake that has leaked and it features Jeezy. It also features an Aaliyah sample from her cover of “At Your Best” by The Isley Brothers. This sounds like something more from So Far Gone, and I think at this point, that is exactly what Drake needs. His old fans aren’t connecting with his new material and his new fans are connecting with his new material either LOL. Jeezy has some nice bars on this too. This is in the pocket!

The Roots – “Dear God 2.0″ Feat. Jim James (My Morning Jacket) & Monsters of Folk [Download]

Wow, I have heard Jim James a couple of times on some My Morning Jacket songs, but on the whole it’s not my preferred genre of listening. However, leave it to The Roots to flip that script. I am loving this joint, and it all works. The instrumentation, the tempo, the myriad of sounds and the production working to put it all together…I like it. June 22nd, new Roots! The tracklist looks interesting, too.

Estelle – “Fall In Love” [Download]

I think Estelle’s first song to drop, “Freak”, might have been TOO much, video and song wise. It wasn’t bad, but the shock value was high, the music was uber-dancey and it was just totally in your face. So, she follows up with “Fall In Love” which has hit the web. Where “Freak” was too much, I think “Fall In Love” is a little TOO safe. Estelle hopefully won’t suffer the sophmore jinx Stateside, because she has grown on me a lot. This song isn’t bad, but I def don’t see this becoming a huge hit…

Album Covers: The Roots, Dru Hill & Fat Joe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 17, 10

How I Got Over, the latest musical opus from The Roots, is supposedly dropping June 22nd. There have been delays in the past, but we will see what happens this time. I like this cover though — it’s simplistic but shows solidarity as a unit in my opinion.

Rap-Up has the exclusive on Dru Hill’s album cover for their next project in a long time, InDRUpendence Day. This joint leaked a while ago and it was nothing interesting at all, honestly. Maybe they are retooling it for it’s July 27th release date, but I was SUPER disappointed. Though that new group member Tao does his GOOD singing! “Love M.D.” was just…yeah.

And Nokio with that hair — Sweet Minty Jesus be some clippers and Mid-Life Crisis solver because he is TOO cotdang old for all that. He looks like a Power Puff Girl. Wow.

Fat Joe, that’s all you got? LOL. And I hate when artists do “Volume 1″ something. You may flop and never get to Volume 2. LOL. Fat Joe’s new project, The Darkside, preceded by “Slow Down (Ha Ha)”, hits June 29th. I can’t say that I’m all too interested, but that’s prolly just me…

Do you love those Roots live performances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon as much as I do? Some of the best performances this year have come from that show with the original artist, The Roots on the instruments, and the occasional feature of Black Thought. Well someone compiled them for us! Yay! DJ Heat (god bless him wherever he is?) compiled them and Shake over at 2DB did graphics and voila — you have a free mixtape!

Live Performances: The Roots w/ Janelle Monae + Incubus

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 7, 09

Janelle Monae performs at The Roots’ Jam Session at the Highline Ballroom in New York recently. Usually she doesn’t do it for me, but she’s like, the slimmed down cuter version of Grace Jones’ performance and Patti LaBelle’s faces, I swear! LOL. When she hopped on the congas at the end I was like, “Diddy is gonna drive this girl into oblivion, po’ thang!” She’s so nice LOL.

This is a video of INCUBUS doing Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon. I actually watched this live and I was PLEASANTLY surprised. Incubus was actually one of my faves in the 90′s, and I was NOT expecting this. It was soooo dope. Brandon Boyd’s vocals were excellent — he even had the scream down!

      Dopeness!

Enjoy these random visual/musical treats LOL.

Mega New Music Post: Whitney, Monica, JoJo, The Roots, MJB, Teedra Moses + More

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 22, 09

Whitney Houston – “I Look To You” (Snippet)

This comes just as there was a listening party last night in NYC for her album. This R. Kelly penned cut is also the title of the album, and while it’s only 30 seconds, it’s enough to figure out that this is pretty much the vocal range of Whitney’s whole album. I guess we should just accept that and move on, yes?

Monica -”Lemme Know” Feat. Missy Elliott

This song is quite hilarious to me. Why? Because it starts off “You said you’d take me to the Jay-Z concert last night/I got a new outfit/I was ready to go baby/But you never came to pick me up/Where were you?/Where were you last night?”

The beat is dope, sounds like a Missy concoction of course and she’s all over it of course. Co-written by Jazmine Sullivan, and I thought I could hear her on the background vocals, because Monica’s voice is NOT that rich. I don’t hate this, I am just interested in hearing how a new Monica album will sound — I hope it’s balanced, classy and polished.

      Mary J. Blige – “Queen”

Mary is still cranking out these “I’M DA BEST!” tracks, and “Queen” is just another one in that progression. It’s about a 2 minute snippet, but it’s braggadocios Mary at her best if I’ve ever seen her. She clearly has a bone to pick with these tarts today LOL. Check these lines: “MJB/Your majesty/Show me to my throne so I can take my seat/Yeah MY SEAT/Shine my crown/That melody you singing/YEAH I MADE THAT SOUND!”

Wow. This sounds like…a Kelis song at the very beginning LOL. You know what I mean?

      JoJo – “25 to Life”

This ish right here is so hot to me. JoJo sounds great. I mean, really, this girl can just sing. It’s crazy how no one has even really tried to put her on bigger than she already is. This song is just crazy, and it’s all about the control that she shows vocally. Her voice belies her age. This is a tracked that’s leaked from sessions for her new album, which is yet to get a release date due to her well-publicized issues with her label Blackground. I hope they get it together soon…

David Guetta – “Sexy Bitch” Feat. Akon

French Superstar DJ David Guetta, riding high on the worldwide charts with his Kelly Rowland assisted song “When Love Takes Over”, worked with a bunch of different American artists on his next album. This song has leaked and while I enjoy the beat, I pretty much never enjoy Akon. And some of the lyrics in this song are just terrible! So yeah, just dance.

Amerie – “Why R U?” (Remix Feat. Nas, Jadakiss, Rick Ross & Kain)

Amerie’s voice is so plain and plaintive and really quite underwhelming most times, but I kind of liked “Why R U?” when it dropped. She goes back in over Whodini’s “One Love”, and added a handful of rappers to round out the remix. I get Nas & Jada. Rick, nah. And…is that Kain that used to be signed to Bad Boy?! Who is this Kain person!? LOL I need to know.

      Teedra Moses – “Everybody Rock”

Now I love Teedra Moses, but this didn’t really make my temperature rise. It’s a nice lil’ joint, but I want Teedra to come a little harder than this. I mean, after a couple of spins it settles into a nice groove that I can dig, but I was expecting more for her “grand return”, ya know? She still has her sound though, and that was missed. This may not make a dent outside of Twitter and the blogs though…

The Roots – “How I Got Over”

The Roots performed/debuted this live on Jimmy Fallon recently and it went so much HARDER than the studio version. I almost wish they’d cut a live album, because they are so good live. I was a little let-down with the recorded version…

Live Performances: The Roots Perform New Song “How I Got Over” on Fallon

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 25, 09

Wow. Is Black Thought channeling James Brown? LOL.

This was MAD funky and old school and Roots as a band are so crazy. However, I wasn’t feeling it too much when Black Thought was doing his old school James Brown & The J.B.’s throwback tribute LOL. Him singing is just not that great. I cringe when he does it on Fallon occasionally. I know he’s not a singer, but sheesh! But when he started rapping, YEAHHHHHHH.

Oh and I lol’ed at the tambourine/percussion player in the back! Dude is getting it IN. And of course the lil’ dance routine at the end was a nice touch Thought.

Overall though, I like it! What ya’ll think!?

New Roots Music Tonight on Jimmy Fallon!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 24, 09

The Roots’ new album, which was originally slated to drop this summer but was pushed back to October 20, will get a boost tonight because they will be premiering their new single on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the show that they serve as house band on.

I don’t know if you’ve been tuning into Jimmy’s crack at late night, but their “Slow Jamming The News” is CLASSIC. His monologues…not so much.

The Roots will debut the title track from their upcoming album, “How I Got Over,” tomorrow (June 24) on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” where they currently serve as the house band. The group shot a video for the track earlier this month; the clip will be released in early July.

“How I Got Over” is a prime slice of the Roots’ socially conscious hip-hop, as Black Thought raps, “Livin’ with the police right behind ya / It’s always more than a slight reminder / we’re livin’ in a war zone like Rwanda.”

As for “How I Got Over” the album, the Def Jam project was originally due this summer but has since been bumped to Oct. 20. Among the tracks expected to make the cut are “Walk Alone,” the vintage R&B-leaning “Make a Move,” “The Day” featuring Icelandic vocalist Patty Crash and a cover of Frank Zappa’s instrumental classic “Peaches en Regalia.” (Source)

I’m excited, are you? I will be up, and even if you miss it, you can expect me to post it up tomorrow!

“Slow Jam The News” < Nails on a Chalkboard

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 3, 09

I watched Jimmy Fallon’s new show last night to catch the debut of The Roots as the “house band”. It was…interesting. Seeing ?uestlove get his Max Weinberg on was slightly hilarious.

I also tuned in to see Justin Timberlake because, while he may be a GIANT tool, has amazing comedic timing. Seriously. And he didn’t disappoint last night. His Michael McDonald impression was A+++!
