    • Tell The Truth: Don’t You Want Some Adidas Now? No? Me Either…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 19, 10

I applaud Adidas for promoting originality and all that. I do. However, Ryan Leslie’s about as exciting as them basketball courts that Nike puts in the hood that are made from the soles of old sneakers. I can’t LOL.

His music doesn’t make me want to go and buy shoes. I’m not going to walk past an Adidas store and think “Oh snap! RYAN LESLIE WROTE A SONG FOR ADIDAS! Let me go cop some sneaks!” He just makes me sleepy. The only thing he makes me want to buy is some slippers and a Snuggie so I can take a nap outside of the Adidas store. Good day sir!

2010 BET Honors Recap, Live Blog & Performances

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 2, 10

The 2010 BET Honors aired last night (February 1) on BET and they honored Queen Latifah (Media), Whitney Houston (Entertainment), Diddy (Entrepreneur), Dr. Ruth J. Simmons (Education) and Keith L. Black, M.D. (Public Service) and was hosted by Gabrielle Union. It was a classy affair all around, and BET did a great job with this event — there were no major gaffes in the production and it looked and sounded great!

There were performances by Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Trey Songz, Jennifer Hudson, Kim Burrell, India.Arie, Jazmine Sullivan, Maxwell, Ryan Leslie, Mary J. Blige and Take 6.

Best performance of the night went to Kim Burrell, HANDS DOWN. Kim Burrell came out looking great, sounding great and moving Whitney Houston to get out of her seat and up into praise & worship. I promise you church was had in that place!

Worst performance of the night went to Maxwell, who is not having the best performances lately. At all. Dude was pitchy, cracking, and all over the place. It was not great AT ALL. I am so disappointed in Maxwell lately…you will see/hear it for yourself below.

For the recap, performances and tweets, hit the jump!

New Music: Raheem DeVaughn, Ryan Leslie, Jack Splash & Monica

      Raheem DeVaughn – “I Don’t Care” [Listen & Download]

I love Raheem DeVaughn, and vocally, there’s not many R&B singers out right now with as pure of a voice as he has. Just the right touch of originality to his voice and a tone that’s all his with a mix of just great vocals are always a highlight of his music. “I Don’t Care” is maybe from his next album The Love & War MasterPeace, which drops in February. He performed on Alicia Keys’ live streaming Billboard.com concert, and he was on point and awesome. I look forward to this. I listen to “Bulletproof” all the time actually…

Ryan Leslie – “Don’t Try To Call Her Now” [Listen & Download]

More music from Ryan Leslie. Still pleasant as ever. Dude is like the R&B version of MOR (middle-of-the-road) radio music. Never bad but never outstanding either. This joint however is extra decent even though it sounds like anything else of his. He tends to keep all his music in the same key so that he can “sing” them. Not bad, but it gets a bit redundant…

      More after the jump…

Ryan Leslie Is Strings & Vocals With “I Choose You” Live Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 09

You can’t hate on a dude that writes his own music, plays it, and sings it though, right?

Ryan Leslie performed his song “I Choose You” on “The Mo’Nique Show” off his latest album Transition. We have commented many a time about Ryan Leslie, and though his vocal was plain, it was sincere and it reveberated with the listeners I feel. It seemed honest and sometimes simple is all you need. Plus, check the strings! LOL!

To be the Devil’s advocate…no I won’t go there today. Just let me know what YOU think? What could Ryan do to make his music more interesting to the masses?

What Do We Think About Ryan Leslie’s “Rescue U”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 18, 09

      Ryan Leslie - Rescue U (Right-Click & Save)

The bonus track from Ryan Leslie’s latest album Transition “Rescue U” caught my ears over the past couple of days as I gave Ryan’s album another couple of spins to try and see if I might have jumped to quick with my earlier reviews of his latest body of work.

“Rescue U” comes off as a smooth jazzy mix of swirling synths and sweet undertones that gives the song an almost 90′s feel. It feels like a remix of say, an earlier Toni Braxton/Sade mix maybe, as if someone did a cover/reworking of some of their songs. Sure, it could easily be Muzak or elevator music, but it’s a smoothed over R&B creation that just sits well with you.

On his latest album, I’m going to go ahead and say that you have to be in a certain place mentally to listen to Ryan. It’s not that the music he makes is bad — it’s just that there’s not much variation in his vocals or production palette to really make you pay close attention. If you let it play in the background though, you see that indeed he has a niche and lane he knows how to stay in it.

What do ya’ll think? Transition is in stores now.

Ryan Leslie’s sophomore album Transition is due out November 3rd. LOL this cover seems extra simple, but…so was his last one.

Music Video: Ryan Leslie – “You’re Not My Girl”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 7, 09

Well, Ryan Leslie’s trying to bring sexy back. Trying. In more ways than one.

I feel as though this is very Justin Timberlake-ish meets Michael Jackson-tribute meets Stephan Urkel (not the nerdy Urkel, the more suave one after he stepped out that machine of his). Yes?

Ryan is a great producer, but as far as an artist, I’m still not entirely convinced he has enough staying power in either part of his careers. As a producer, his songs don’t break many molds and he definitely has a signature sound. As an artist, his voice is fair-to-middling but not nearly interesting enough to differentiate him from anyone else in the crowded field of R&B these days.

This new album of his, Transitions, which supposedly drops October 13th, should have put him on a different level creatively and visually. This video could have been his chance. While the video itself has some interesting things with colors, lighting and effects, at the end of the day the person at the center of this experiment is not enough to make you want to watch till the end.

What do you think of this video?

Video: Fabolous – “Everything, Everyday, Everywhere” Feat. Keri Hilson

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 28, 09

      Generic radio banger. Meh.

Pretty girls, celeb cameos, Keri Hilson…ok.

What I was more disturbed about was Ryan Leslie making Fabolous get his sang on AND the fact that he said “We in this b*tch like an unborn baby” — what!? Come on!!

I kinda tuned it out because Ryan Leslie’s production is so generic sounding at times that his joints tend to just drift into the background.

I usually like Fab but I think his features are better than this album, I’ve got to listen to it some more.

      What ya’ll think?

Ryan Leslie Gets It In With Fab & Keri

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 13, 09

Ryan, Fab & Keri Studio Session from Ryan Leslie on Vimeo.

Ryan Leslie, though his music is a tad bit generic at times, still has a spark of creativity that is hard to find. I am fan of Fab most of the time, and ya’ll know how I feel about Keri.

This is a cool little clip though, and it’s good view of what kinda happens during a writing session. I miss these.

Album Review: Ryan Leslie – “Ryan Leslie”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 1, 09

      ryanlesliecoverlojl1

Ryan Leslie’s debut album has hit the net, but let me be the first to say that I will be purchasing it when it drops on February 10th. Though he doesn’t really break any molds or create any new creative lanes, his music, which I would almost call “Mood R&B”, strikes a pretty evenly keeled musical portrait that is a pleasant listen all the way through.
