    • Rihanna “Found Love” In A Bad Situation

Written by Donovan in Videos on Oct 25, 11

By now you all have seen Rihanna‘s 50-leventh video for “We Found Love” off her sixth album in her six year career, Talk That Talk. When this first came out I took a mere interest due to a production by Calvin Harris. Once the vocals kicked in I thought, “Is this the Only Girl In the World Who Found Love?” Y’all know how much I hate sequels. After putting the song on my pause list – a staple for songs that I will eventually listen to before I die – I decided to wait for the visual. How happy I am that I waited.

This video is everything I wanted from Rihanna since her domestic abuse case. Instead of going emo like she did with Rated R, she shows us her fun, angry, emotional and dare I say vulnerable side. Using her Chris Brown look-a-like, she shows how you can love someone so much that it can be dangerous for everyone involved. Although this particular homage to her past takes it to drug and alchol induced heights, it is clear to see that sometimes love and heartbreak can force you to grow as a person, as she had to do in her own life.

Although the song on its own still seems hollow and I am dreading to hear her perform it live, this is a clear case where the pairing of a song with a visual give you all the right pieces to see something honest and heartfelt. Kudos Rihanna. I’m sure this is the last time…

Rihanna Looks A Plum Fool Tiptoeing Through The Tulips In “Only Girl (In The World)” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Oct 13, 10

What are we supposed to do with this Rihanna? I feel like she is auditioning for the cast of “Hair” on Broadway with this “frolicking in the fields” and this hair…and these balloons…and flowers…and just…is it the dawn of the Age of Aquarius?

Outside of the fact that YES, she’s “the only girl” in this imaginary world of hers where girls still dye their hair with Kool-aid and play dress up, there’s nothing remotely interesting about this clip. Well, maybe the fireworks? Is she celebrating her freedom from her evil Rated R alter-ego? I guess. I will have no parts.

Rihanna’s All Neon Colors & Rainbows In A Drastic 180 From “Rated R” With “Who’s That Chick” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 17, 10

It’s like Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” meets T-Pain meets a bag of Skittles in a Pride Week gay bar with some tacky Rainbow Brite fashion thrown in for good measure!

Rihanna’s taken a leak with this “Who’s That Chick” video, and I’m sure it will be down in a couple of hours, but get into this David Guetta-produced saccharine flavored lollipop-kids music, courtesy of a now happy and “wants to have fun!” Rihanna. She looks great, but, when hasn’t she?

I’m thoroughly convinced that Rihanna wants to make music just for the perks of things like hanging with Jay-Z, free clothes, cool hairstyles, and funky tattoos. It’s not about the music LOL. And David Guetta’s bland Europop sound has taken over the US music biz like wildfire. Must EVERYTHING have this dance sound? 4 on the floor all day erryday.

I Missed The MTV VMA’s, But Here’s The Performances!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 13, 10

Hit the jump for my $.02 about the MTV Video Music Awards 2010. I missed them this year in terms of running commentary [#recession], but here’s the performances and the few thoughts I had. Highs? Lows? Share your thoughts!

Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” Is A Fiery Tribute To Domestic Violence & Emotionally Abused Women Everywhere

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 6, 10

Eminem has really made it easy to drown out and not pay attention to Rihanna in this clip and I thank him eternally for that. The imagery and realness of the clip really had me enraptured and captured all of my attention. Well, that and Megan Fox. I hear that she gave her fee for appearing in this video to a battered woman’s shelter too, and I think that is really dope.

Of course, we could say what an interesting choice to have Rihanna on this track, but it makes sense sadly. Playing off of her situation to everyone’s benefit no doubt. She does bring a slightly haunting character to the song and in hindsight I don’t think anyone’s else’s voice would sound as good on this joint. It just works. Nice piece of A&R work on MANY levels.

Eminem’s Recovery is still one of the biggest selling albums of the year and mark his return to dominance over the hip-hop world. When it’s all said and done, I think it’s hilarious that a white man has ruled them all. Eminem’s definitely a beast and that “I guess that’s why the call it window pain/pane” line gets me every time.

Ne-Yo Speaks On His Alter Ego “Jerome”, What Libra Scale Is/About, And Rihanna.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 10, 10

Sadly, he also shares that Rihanna is working on a new album.

      I’ll wait.

Ne-Yo’s new record, Libra Scale, is based off of a script that he has been writing since he got the acting bug. You know, actually, I will just let him explain it, cause…

He sat down with Rap-Up and gave them the exclusive. Please feel free to weigh-in. Oh and his nickname is Jerome! JEROME. That makes me think of Morris Day and The Time HAHAHA.

And I really don’t like that “Beautiful Monster” song…but of course, radio is playing it…

Rihanna Plays Dress-Up And Acts Like A Singer In “Rockstar 101″ Clip

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 25, 10

Rihanna, so edgy. So fashionable. Such a rockstar. Son controversial. I guess!

She dresses up as Slash, taunts the “Devil worship” rumors (look for it), has drums from Travis Barker, and otherwise just writhes around (in and out of black paint) in her latest video.

Rihanna has to go through THEE MOST to sell a platinum record! All of this!? For those album sales? Singles are another matter, but I just feel like if it takes that much money to do these small numbers, something is definitely wrong with the business. And Rihanna’s schtick is a little tired now, but I was over it before this album even started.

According to YouTube, “Rude Boy” has 59 million views. Guess it’s just me LOL.

Album Covers: The Roots, Dru Hill & Fat Joe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 17, 10

How I Got Over, the latest musical opus from The Roots, is supposedly dropping June 22nd. There have been delays in the past, but we will see what happens this time. I like this cover though — it’s simplistic but shows solidarity as a unit in my opinion.

Rap-Up has the exclusive on Dru Hill’s album cover for their next project in a long time, InDRUpendence Day. This joint leaked a while ago and it was nothing interesting at all, honestly. Maybe they are retooling it for it’s July 27th release date, but I was SUPER disappointed. Though that new group member Tao does his GOOD singing! “Love M.D.” was just…yeah.

And Nokio with that hair — Sweet Minty Jesus be some clippers and Mid-Life Crisis solver because he is TOO cotdang old for all that. He looks like a Power Puff Girl. Wow.

Fat Joe, that’s all you got? LOL. And I hate when artists do “Volume 1″ something. You may flop and never get to Volume 2. LOL. Fat Joe’s new project, The Darkside, preceded by “Slow Down (Ha Ha)”, hits June 29th. I can’t say that I’m all too interested, but that’s prolly just me…

Artwork: Ladies Edition — Kelly Rowland, Rihanna & M.I.A.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 6, 10

Rap-Up unleashed Ms. Rowland’s single cover for her overshadowed-by-Beyonce’ but very decent new single “Commander” today. I love Kelly, but I can’t wang with that Old Lady Button hat. I just really can’t. She’s beautiful though and I love the hair…and does she date regular dudes? Just saying.

Rihanna is releasing another single or two — this time it is “Te Amo”. I’d be lying if I said I’d heard this song before. I don’t want to and I really don’t care to. Just look at the pretty picture and smile. This is the international single however — in the US she’s releasing “Rockstar 101″ and videos for both are already in the can…

M.I.A., after that crazy video she put out about rounding up Ginger folks and shooting them in the desert (I can’t), has released the cover art for her new single “XXXO” which is due on iTunes on May 11th. Who knows what she has up her sleeve with this one, but it is sure to be something thought-provoking and hopefully as equally danceable.

This Season of AI Should Be Called “America’s Dreadful”+ Rihanna & Jason DeRulo

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 8, 10

OK, I have a confession — I have been listening to Jason DeRulo’s “In My Head” a lot lately. I’m sorry! It’s catchy, and I feel good about myself because “in my head”, I sing it a lot better than he does. Sue me.

However, this performance was…something. I WILL give him points for singing it all LIVE. He danced, sung, moonwalked, j-sett, pop-locked and vogued for them cameras and hit all his (choreography) marks. The vocals were hit and mess, but, he’s a new artist and 8/10 he was onit. Good enough for me!

He could have kept them jackets, them falsetto notes, and that black & white slo-mo camera. No ma’am, no sir!

      Now about Rihanna…
