    • Rihanna And Her Vocal Coaches Do “Rude Boy” In Germany

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 5, 10

Robots, goats, either would work LOL!

Rihanna had two giant robots on stage with her when she performed “Rude Boy” at the Echo Awards in Germany. The Echo Awards are similar to the Billboard Awards or American Music Awards as they are based on sales.

Rih-Rih started OFF on a bad note, but at times, she did her best to nail the majority of the song. She was definitely pitchy in a lot of spots though. But she looked good…

Ke$ha also performed “Tik Tok” if you care looking like an extra from “The Lion King”.

Rihanna Gets Frisky With Her “Rude Boy” Across The Pond

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 26, 10

I normally don’t do Rihanna “live” performances, but I thought the band was kind of jamming on the 1 with this performance of “Rude Boy” on the Alan Carr show across the pond. Rihanna has on a lunch lady hair net — is that was passes for fashion these days? — and she simulates getting some with her microphone, but at the end of the performance, I got to say that she sounded ALRIGHT for her. I mean, this song has basically no more than 5 or 6 notes but this is the first time I didn’t immediately want to throw myself off a cliff after hearing her perform.

I’m mostly giving that up to the band, though it seems they missed their cue at the beginning cause the drummer was sitting there like…”Oh, do I play NOW?” HA!

I really can’t with that fancy Bajan Aunt Jemima get-up though, LOL. Did you know she’s talking about putting out a new album already — approximately this summer. It’s just been four short months since her last one came out, but she wants lighter, edgier fare this time around. *shrugs*

Rihanna Is All Pop (Art) In “Rude Boy” Clip

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 11, 10

Props to Melina for saving this clip because, man, this song is boring, and Rihanna’s vocal is boring and I was just bored period. I think I listened to this album once all the way through and never played it again besides “Hard”.

I pretty much gave up on listening to the vocals because you can clearly see that this visual is meant to sell Rihanna, and her sex appeal. Such a sexualized object she is at that — at one point it zooms in on the form-fitting leotard and the concentric circles around her breasts.

      “You you know dis!”

Be clear, Rihanna is a beautiful woman. But it’s hard to accept her as more than that, and this video is more of the same. A little bit of choreography (and I use that term loosely) was thrown in for good measure, along with some extraneous eye candy for her female fans, but other than that, this innocuous use of a lens could be largely forgotten without you never feeling like you’d miss anything at all. Melina is one of my favorite directors though, and she used her ample Pop Art palette and colors and other effects to give Rihanna some personality.

Maxwell Comes With A “Fistful of Tears” For Oprah & Haiti

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 21, 10

Maxwell sings the great “Fistful of Tears” on Oprah yesterday on her special episode dedicated to Haiti and the tragedy there. There was also another tragedy yesterday, and that was Rihanna butchering Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”, but we won’t talk about that…

Maxwell’s band is great though at times I feel like they overpowered his voice. And his voice — Maxwell’s voice is doing something lately. Maybe from overuse or I don’t know what, but it’s not sounding as smooth as it did. There were also a few bum notes here and there. Not my favorite Maxwell performance.

“Fistful of Tears” is also Maxwell’s next single and video.

Rihanna Entertains The Troops In “Hard” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 17, 09

Let’s be real, this video is for the fellas LOL. I mean, the flesh-colored shirt w/ the black duct tape over the nips? Wow. LOL! Rihanna goes “Hard” indeed.

This is probably the only song I like off of Rated R and that I ever listen to. Mostly cause I’m a Jeezy fan and the beat is niiiiice. Rihanna’s voice doesn’t offer much, but the track doesn’t require it either.

Now this video is “G.I. Jane” meets “Major Payne” meets the back of Lady Gaga’s closet meets Sade meets M.A.S.H. meets the War on Terror. I gotta admit, a desert theme and war motif is a very creative approach to the song, and what’s more “hard” than Rihanna’s shooting a gun?

Phallic symbols abound, but Rihanna is at this point nothing but a machine that uses to (barely) sell her music and whatever else she is promoting. Susan Boyle still sold more than her and half the world combined — and have you seen Susan Boyle? Right.

Coverage: Dondria Does Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 17, 09

Reader Marc sent this in, and I got to say, I still don’t really care for this song, regardless of who is singing it. But Dondria gives it more of a soulful treatment (which isn’t hard since Rihanna’s soul lacks exactly that) with her soulful voice. However, this song just is blah to me.

It’s interesting hearing someone else singing this song. Dondria does her thing with it though, cause her chops are definitely thicker than Rihanna’s.

What do ya’ll think? I’m still not feeling this joint, regardless, but Dondria does a nice job on the parts vocally that Rihanna barely handles. Leave your thoughts!

Rihanna Hits “Saturday Night Live” With A 1-2-3 Punch

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 6, 09

Above, you can peep the “SNL Digital Short” that Andy Samberg has made the show famous (and Emmy-award winning and Grammy-award nominated) for, this time with him as “Shy Ronnie” and with Rihanna as….Rihanna.

You know what though, even with the chance to kind of cut loose and have fun, I feel like Rihanna is still robot-esque. And the clip still sounds like her looking, singing and sounding like her. Justin Timberlake takes on a whole new life when he does his shorts…I don’t know. I think this is the classic failing of Rihanna. She’s just THERE. Tepid vocals, hot fashion, interesting looks, but…at least Miley Cyrus can act…oh and T.I. called, he wants his beat back! The short was kinda funny though “Speak up!”

After the jump, peep the performances of “Russian Roulette” with a very stoic Rihanna channeling Joan of Arc (“in her former life” — Coming to America) and “Hard” with an appearance by Jeezy. I actually like “Hard”, it’s the only record on that album I do like, but again, it’d be much better if someone more dynamic vocally was delivering it. Yep.

Live Performance Wrap-Up: Maxwell, LeToya & Rihanna

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 4, 09

MAXWELL! Dude kills live man. I love the horns. I love this song, the vibe of it just grooooooves man. Congrats to Maxwell on his 6 Grammy noms (our Grammy post will be up this weekend)! The changes the band were throwing into that music though — subtle but DOPE. You gotta pay attention to hear them though, if you can be take your eyes off of Maxwell’s on-stage antics and gyrations. However, I did hear something going on with Maxwell’s voice…did ya’ll catch that?

His Prince yell though? ROFL that was EVERYTHING! DONE!

LeToya did her best to make us believe that she has stepped up her vocal skills since the last album. This performance wasn’t THAT bad but it wasn’t that stunning either vocally. When someone last night said she was “on Mo’Nique Show strangling cats” I had to go check it out LOL, which was last night and she did her single “Regret”. Ya’ll worse than me sometimes! I like LeToya though, she has a good ear for material. Maybe that ear isn’t as good to hear the right pitches but hey, baby steps LOL! Nah, she sounded iite. A little strained at times, but decent.

Rihanna did a live streaming show in NYC yesterday at the Hammerstein Ballroom for Myspace (probably the most traffic Myspace had seen in a while). I felt like I was watching a lampshade from a Disney movie come to life and sing, only that they forgot to draw in the animations and whatnot. She is so terrible live on stage! There were some bum notes here and there, but let’s chalk that up to her “stanky face” cause that means she was feeling it ya’ll. Wamp.

Rihanna Playing “Russian Roulette” With Her Record Sales & Fan’s Patience Still

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 29, 09

I feel like everytime I hear Rihanna sing this song I live, I wish it wasn’t her song and that someone like Keri Hilson or Teairra Mari would do a Youtube cover version of it that I can then replace the original with in my mind. Seriously, I just think this song isn’t for her right now, because of its lyrics and because of the melody and the chops that need to be pulled off to sing it.

PLUS, this song is so low ANYWAY, the fact that she starts having trouble reaching them notes at around the 2:30 mark and starts to slide downhill vocally just says volumes about her vocal range.

However, all that being said, for HER at least, this was a pretty decent performance. She gave me a lil’ something on the stage and it was almost very entertaining. I heard though sadly that she’s not only flopping here but also flopping in the UK. How dreadful! Didn’t her worldwide live concert broadcast out of the UK?

Beyonce’s “Special” Was No More Than An Advertisement + Live DVD Review

Written by The IPS in Blogs, New Music & Reviews on Nov 28, 09

You know, I watched this with the rest of America, and while overall I’m a fan, I felt this was unnecessary. Did we really learn anything new? Was there anything super exclusive or exciting about this special? I feel like no. It was basically an advertisement for her latest DVD, which our very own Stefkes wrote a review on (see after the jump).

I think we are all collectively starting to get to that place again where we feel like Beyonce’ needs to go take a break and get off of our radars. However, with reports of her working on or being finished with a new album that will come out next year, we may not get that wish for Christmas. Check out this hilarious comedy clip too of Beyonce’ and Rihanna in “Celebrity Therapy” as well before you hit the jump. Homegirl sounds JUST like Beyonce’!
