    • “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” Is Not Bad Per Se…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 8, 10

It’s just that Alicia makes it dreadful! And, to make it even more excruciating, she slows the tempo DOWN. We are only saved by the respite we find in the voices of the background singers. YA’LL BETTA SING.

Oprah featured Alicia in a recent episode and there was also chatter and a preview of the video for “Put It In A Love Song”. I got to say, I’m looking forward to the VISUALS of that video, not so much the audio. LOL.

I wanted to post this for that SLOW tempo though, what made her decide that was a good idea?!

Fantasia Shows Us “Even Angels” Get Emotional on Oprah

Written by FirstGentleman in Blogs on Feb 3, 10

Fantasia performs her new single “Even Angels” today on Oprah and she toned it down for O and her audience.

I’m neutral towards the song and wouldn’t have picked it for the first single because it sounds very filler to me. I was more distracted by Oprah’s early 90’s “Star Search” background with the fog machine going at full blast!

All and all I generally liked the performance. Rarely do you see ‘tasia use any kinda vocal restraint. Even when she did her Dorinda Clark-Cole knock off runs they were mild at best. She even starts crying with that one hand lifted, #sochurchy! You can take the girl out the church but you can’t take the church out the girl…

What do we think of this new single? If you’ve watched the show, you’ve seen her fight hard for “Move On Me”, the song she had initially decided that she loved the most. Guess they didn’t feel the same way?

Maxwell Comes With A “Fistful of Tears” For Oprah & Haiti

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 21, 10

Maxwell sings the great “Fistful of Tears” on Oprah yesterday on her special episode dedicated to Haiti and the tragedy there. There was also another tragedy yesterday, and that was Rihanna butchering Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”, but we won’t talk about that…

Maxwell’s band is great though at times I feel like they overpowered his voice. And his voice — Maxwell’s voice is doing something lately. Maybe from overuse or I don’t know what, but it’s not sounding as smooth as it did. There were also a few bum notes here and there. Not my favorite Maxwell performance.

“Fistful of Tears” is also Maxwell’s next single and video.

The Turkey Hasn’t Digested Yet But Oprah Says It’s Christmastime!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 1, 09

Oprah, Queen of the World, featured some of our favorite R&B artists alongside some not-so-R&B artists on her show on Monday singing some classic Christmas music for the world to hear. Cause everyone in the world watches Oprah.

Alicia Keys had a duet with Tim McGraw, Mary J. Blige had a duet with Andrea Boccelli and Jennifer Hudson had a duet with Sugarland on “Oprah’s Holiday Music Extravaganza”.

Above you’ll see my favorite, which was Jennifer Hudson with Sugarland. I love Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland. That woman sings DOWN. I gotta say, she outdid J. Hud at the beginning, but then Jennifer Hudson started to pull it out towards the end. I loved their performance of “Silent Night” though. LOL @ Oprah tombout “Silent Night ain’t so silent no more!”

The rest of the performances, in order of my favorites, after the jump!

Sean Carter Sits With Oprah As The Whole World Watches

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 25, 09

Jay-Z was on Oprah and they talked about a lot of stuff. Peep Part 1 and then Parts 2, 3 and 4 after the jump.

In Part 1, Oprah asks him what he’s wearing (cologne wise), how rap has affected the culture at large (in which Jay says that rap has done more than anything to affect racism in our time through the power of music as a universal language and how racism is not taught in music but is taught in the home), how powerful it is that Oprah was standing in Marcy Projects with him, and more. In Part 1 they also do a walkabout of his old home, Marcy Projects, and talk some of his history and why he turned to drug dealing initially. They toured his grandmother’s house where he lived until he was 5, with the crowds building. Also was brought up how his father’s leaving affected him emotionally and the eventual reconnection of the two spurred on by his mother. Lastly, how he never got high on his own supply!

The other parts after the jump!

      The Whitney Wrap-Up, Part 2

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 16, 09

Whitney pretty much wraps up a revealing, candid yet classy interview with Oprah yesterday in promotion of her new album. The most poignant parts of the interview were her talking about Bobbi Kristina and also how God is basically who she is talking about when she sings “I Look To You” (as if we didn’t know that though, especially with it written by R. Kelly).

At the end, there was a performance of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” in front of an audience full of Whitney fans. My only issue with this was yes, Whitney sounded really decent. However, it was because they lowered the key of the song so much LOL. It’d be impossible for her not to sound good singing it that low.

Overall though, it was a very honest and much needed sitdown. Whitney’s story is powerful and brings hope to a lot of people no doubt. I hope and pray she stays clean and continues on the road to recovery, “one day at a time,” just like she said. I’m rooting for her.

And of course, Bobby has had a few words to say. Watch ‘em here.

      The Whitney Wrap-Up, Part 1

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 15, 09

Well…she finally did it. Whitney Houston came clean, in MANY ways! Talked about lacing her blunts with cocaine, Bobby spitting on her, taking Bobbi Kristina with her to treatment…Oprah gave an EXCELLENT interview so far.

You know what I think? This was more so for HER as well it was supposedly for the benefit of her fans. There is nothing like confession. It’s good for the soul. That’s why the mental health field exists and why there are laws for confidentiality. Sharing makes you feel better.

I applaud Whitney though, because you know what, it really did make her seem more, I don’t know, human. Oprah was right on the money though with that “America’s national treasure” comment about “THE VOICE”. I really did feel like sometimes…”how dare Whitney mistreat this awesome gift!” People’s lives are their own though and you can’t help someone until they want to be saved.

As someone who has dealt with drug abuse and addicted family members and what not, my heart was so sad that she’d been through that. And Bobbi. And her mom! It was so crazy to finally hear it. But you can hear the 12 steps all up and THROUGH Whitney’s interview.

I’m so glad she’s together, and I pray she stays that way. After Part 2 airs, I will post up my album review as well.

      Thoughts?

Magazine Covers: Michelle Obama Covers O Magazine

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 6, 09

      Michelle Obama on O Magazine

First Lady Michelle Obama covers O magazine with Oprah in its April issue.

If your child’s role model is Beyonce’, Rihanna, or anyone else mildly inappropriate, you should really buy them some books and inform them about what is going on in the world.

I can only hope the future daughter I have one day is as strong, educated, talented and stunning as either of these two women.

Phew, still thinking about black folks running stuff in the White House gives me shivers!

What Do We Think About…Leona Lewis?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 19, 08

Leona Lewis performs “Bleeding Love” live on The Oprah Winfrey Show

I don’t know how many of you have heard of 22 year old Brit Leona Lewis, but she won an American Idol-type show in the UK called The X Factor and has gone on to break many records across the pond. She’s been compared to such greats as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey (minus the breakdowns of course ROFL) and has been blazing a trail worldwide. Her smash debut song “Bleeding Love” was produced by Ryan Tedder, frontman of OneRepublic (“Apologize”) and also producer of J. Lo’s “Do It Well” and others.

Now, she’s got Oprah carrying the torch for her as she is poised to launch her project stateside on April 8th I believe.

In my opinion, I JUST DON’T GET IT. While she is def finer than a box of wine (LOL), and I LOVE English accents (no seriously, I LOVE IT), vocally, she’s just good. Not great, but good! I mean, above average maybe. I think they are comparing her to Mariah because of her range and her voice break (low to high, full to falsetto for the edumacated), and Whitney because of her poise and charm. I listened to her album months ago and was bored to tears though.

So, you decide….what do we think about Leona? Are we going to care in the United States? I’m voting no and she will go the way of most British acts that try to make it in the States. FEEDBACK!
