    • JoJo Has New Music In The Form Of Mixtape Cut “In The Dark” And It’s Interestingly Good

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 30, 10

Wow, I love JoJo. Seriously. This is one of the best singers hands down we have out right now. Girl is COLD and I have been waiting for new music from her for a while. Well, the wait is about to be over because she’s dropping a new mixtape that is a mash-up of all the styles that is the musical DNA that is JoJo. “In The Dark” is the first offering from that, and it’s a slinky, dark, and slightly futuristic soul-influenced jam that upon first listen caught me off guard, but grew on me after the next one.

JoJo’s mixtape Can’t Take That Away From Me debuts on September 7th exclusively on Rap-Up. I’m excited. I listen to “Lose Control” that she did from Shock Value 2 for Timbaland ALL the time.

      R. Kelly Rolls With A Motown Sound For New Single “When A Woman Loves”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 24, 10

I’m still confused as to if we are listening to R. Kelly again or what because people are still clearly listening to his records and supporting him. Are we separating the man from the music in this day and age or are just giving black women everywhere the finger? Chris Brown has started his comeback trail…R. Kelly stays in the spotlight…should we forgive without forgetting or condemn forever?

“When A Woman Loves” harkens back supposedly to a time of the Motown sound and true soul vocals and music. I guess — this kind of purposeful tact always feels fake and forced to me. Robert is a singer though whose voice amazingly seems to find a way to adapt to many different types of singing. This song is taken from his upcoming album Love Letter, and a video has already been shot. He also another TWO albums in the pipeline, one called Zodiac and another called Epic. They don’t call him the Pied Piper for nothing…

Michel’le Is Making A Return? New Single “Freedom To Love” + Classic Flashback “Something In My Heart”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 23, 10

Half of ya’ll probably have never heard the name Michel’le, but if you were born in the 80′s and grew up in the 90′s, you know who she is. She used to be married to Dr. Dre and Suge Knight too, but her unique, baby-voiced soprano squall lead her to a couple of hits back in the day. Well, apparently she is giving it another round after God knows however many years! 10+?!

Check out the trailer above — I gotta say…Ms. Michel’le, I mean this in all honesty and respect, YOU LOOK GOOD! I mean, her and Stacey Dash must be dipping in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, because it sure ain’t the LA River that’s keeping them looking like that!

The song is apparently available on iTunes and no word when the actual project if any is coming out. My favorite Michel’le song after the jump!

Cee Lo’s Latest Song Sums Up Many of My Mondays! “F**k You” Is Awesome!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 23, 10

Cee Lo Green FOR THE WIN! The Soul Machine is back and he is better than ever. He hits us with a sneak peek of his new single “F*** You” from his  upcoming album The Lady Killer. It’s due out October 4th here in the US and abroad, and I got to say, Cee-Lo is one of my favorite vocalists. He doesn’t disappoint on this latest release with these catchy lyrics (splashed all over the screen for your perusal) and effortless vocal. Magic is going to happen hopefully on the 4th of October LOL.

Doesn’t Faith Evans’ Something About Faith drop that month too? Excited.

Fantasia Needs To Replace Her Deadbeat “Man of the House” In More Ways Than One…

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 9, 10

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Fantasia – “Man of the House” [Download]

Fantasia’s latest single “Man of the House” sounds like something she’d HAVE to record on her first album because “the label made me do it.” It’s template, it’s lazy, it’s not very interesting, the subject matter is a bit trite (though I’m sure she relates to it as a single parent on some level?), the beat sounds stale and retreaded…we could go on.

The fact is “Even Angels” didn’t get off to that GREAT of a start, and while on her TV show they were pushing “Move On Me” (which actually seemed really dope), we get “Man of the House”. I don’t know who Fannie Mae pissed off over at her label, but they clearly are not giving her the benefit of the doubt.

And now all this scandal about her being a homewrecker, denying it, etc. With God on her side, Fantasia may get through this scandal. But without some hitmakers on her side, she may not get through another proverbial “flop”. Someone please page Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis or Carvin & Ivan and them to help her out. SOMEBODY.

This is better than any of the songs we’ve heard so far. Those horns! That swing of that track! Give us “Move on Me”! Please.

The Voice Of The West Coast Is Back! Latoiya Williams Debuts “I Can’t Leave You Alone” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 3, 10

Not a lot of people know her, but Latoiya Williams has been around the music biz for a while. She’s often graced many of Snoop’s projects and even has done with with Jay-Z and Anthony Hamilton after her own solo album (which was supposed to be released on Snoop’s label) was never released sadly. I love her voice and her song “Fallen Star” is a CLASSIC IMO. Well, I got wind today that she’s working on a comeback and the first fruits of that effort are the video and song called “I Can’t Leave You Alone”

The video features Latoiya caught up in the rapture of love and a view of the other side of that as well. It’s pretty simple, but let’s talk about the song! It’s a laid back, definite West Coast influenced joint that features her vocals sliding and gliding with the rhythm and melody of the synth-pads effortlessly. YES, she sounds great and I love this joint. I’m hoping for word of a firm release date, but let’s flood her inbox on Youtube or something with some fuel to hurry up! I love how she is singing slightly behind the beat…man, please bring us some new music Toi. Your voice is phenomenal!

Trey Songz Promotes Step Up 3D And Warbles About Being “Already Taken” + New Single “Can’t Be Friends”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Aug 3, 10

STILL don’t know why they think anyone wants to see “Step Up”, the third one PERIOD, MUCH LESS in 3-D!!

LOL, the bridge of this song is SO asinine and random. It turns a somewhat decent mid-tempo ballad into this random “everybody stop and do a random dance break!” moment and just ruins the flow and everything. Well, you know, ruins it more than Trey does.

He starts off pretty innocuously but he chops up the phrasing on this song so much it just bothers me. Ya’ll know I am not a fan anyway, but yeah. There’s a few bum notes here and there too when he tries to do ad-libs but I guess for him, this was a decent performance. I’d really probably like this song if they dropped that terrible soul clap during the bridge and…if someone else was singing. Jimmy Fallon I’m sure was over at his desk Tweeting while Trey sung LOL.

He also has a new single that came out today called “Can’t Be Friends” from his upcoming Passion, Pain & Pleasure album which drops on September 14th. Hit the jump for the cover art and to listen/DL the song and my review.

Faith Evans’ Voice Hasn’t “Gone” Anywhere On New Single “Gone Already”

Faith Evans – “Gone Already” [Download]

A part of me gets immediately glad when I see the words “Faith Evans” on my mp3 player. And while I am glad Faith is back, I really was hoping for, you know, a BIG BOMBASTIC return for her. “Gone Already” is a return to form from something that maybe would fit on the The First Lady, which wasn’t a terrible album at all. I would be remiss though if I didn’t say I was hoping for something with more groove and swing like the songs from her Bad Boy days.

“Gone Already” features Evans in fine form and voice, with a melody that mirrors the piano-driven instrumental. It’s good. I can definitely dig it. But…I hope Faith gives us some “oomph” that will wake up our senses and reignite the fire that I feel like she is missing since her heyday. Even with that, she still very formidable vocally and I love it! Her new album Something About Faith is set to drop in October, and she’s one of the few artists I will just buy period without even sampling first. She’s classic!

Music Monday: Chester Gregory Does A Tribute To J. Dilla And Jackie Wilson With New Joint

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 2, 10

A Woman, A Lover, A Friend (Download for free at www.ChesterGregory.com) by Chester Gregory

Broadway actor and entertainer and solo artist Chester Gregory is blessing the Internets today with a new joint he put together for his fans AND fans of the late great J. Dilla and also original soul singer Jackie Wilson. Chester Gregory puts together an interesting melange of a J. Dilla beat (Slum Village’s “Eyes Up”) and the Jackie Wilson song “A Woman A Lover A Friend”. You can hear the original below. Chester mixes both of his inspirations and brings this song into 2010 with an updated flair. It’s pretty dope that it fits SO well — the beat wasn’t altered at all. Get into this, and hear both of the original songs after the jump.

If you want to cop the download, head over to Chester’s official website!

Marsha Ambrosius Gets Spiteful In “Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 2, 10

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Marsha Ambrosius, formerly known as “The Songstress” from Floetry, has finally put out her first proper single from her upcoming solo album Late Nights, Early Mornings, which is due out on J Records this fall. The song takes any civility that we have after a breakup and exposes what you might REALLY be thinking in the back of your mind. Produced by Marsha and Canei, the song features a nice beat and Marsha’s distinct voice. However, is this enough to launch her to fame as a solo act outside of mixtapes and the Internet?
