    • What Do We Think: The Preatures Ask “Is This How You Feel?”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 9, 13

      preatures

Discovered this lovely track by new Australian band from Sydney called The Preatures, and they describe themselves as a “Gothic Soul / rock and roll band”, according to their Tumblr.

“Is This How You Feel?” is an easily enjoyable song, that features a nice pocket rhythmically, a relaxed and effortless vocal by female vocalist Isabella Manfredi, some great harmonies and some excellent guitar work. I look forward to hearing more from The Preatures. They have an EP out now as well, called Shaking Hands, which is available here.

Thoughts? I thought this was a great find and wanted to share it with my fam!

Janelle Monáe & Erykah Badu Team Up To Show Their Girl Power With “Q.U.E.E.N.”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 22, 13

      Download: Janelle-Monae-Q.U.E.E.N.-Feat.-Erykah-Badu.mp3

Janelle Monáe advances her funky sound to the next level with the added influence and bonus of the one and only Erykah Badu to her new single “Q.U.E.E.N.”

True fans of Janelle’s have no doubt been waiting to hear what her next musical outing would be like — and while it’s decidedly still funky, it’s taken a more of a tilted funk with the music bed that is “Q.U.E.E.N.”, and she’s also added more rapping to her repetoire (though she’s done it before on remixes and things). This song is full of guitars, tambourines, and synths. It’s as if Janelle has had a religious experience with some 80′s girl group sass, Prince & New Power Generation funk, with a dash of Nona Hendryx and Eryakah Badu thrown in for good measure.

Not to mention the vocal is still showing that Janelle packs a lot of voice into that petite body of hers.

Do you like “Q.U.E.E.N.”? What about that cover art?! Two of my favorite artists on one track is more than what I bargained for. My body is ready.

Fantasia Hits The Trap In Her Club Clothes In “Without Me” With Kelly Rowland & Missy

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 12, 13

      fantasia without me cover

Fantasia is trying to come back and in a major way. Her new album Side Effects Of You comes out in a few weeks (April 23rd), and while “Lose To Win” was inspirational and all that, it fell flat to many of her fans.

So she’s gone the way of trendy and has put out “Without You”, which embraces the minimalistic nature of hip-hop’s current scene of trap-rap, mixed with some swirling chords a la a synth or Wurlitzer, to bring some melody into the tuneless nature of the beat. The song features a guest vocal by Kelly Rowland, who actually really sounds very decent.

In fact, I’m going to go ahead and say that Fantasia has “dumbed” down her vocals for two reasons: because the beat calls for it — it’s a current sounding track on par with what radio is playing these days. The second, being that Kelly Rowland is also singing on the track. Fantasia’s trademark gut-busting, countrified soulful vocal would NOT mesh with a track like this, and, well, we know Kelly isn’t that type of singer.

Missy Elliott’s verse really adds no value outside of the fact that she’s probably the cheapest of female rappers to get a feature from right now, and of course, the most immediate choices for a rap on this joint are really overused (Tyga, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, etc.). Overall, it’s nice club track. It’ll knock after a few drinks and if you’re standing by a subwoofer. But ultimately, after a few replays it falls flat fast and leaves me wanting more from the vocal powerhouse that is Fantasia. It was nice to hear something in which she holds herself back, however. It definitely makes her more accessible outside of R&B radio. “Without Me” fits real well in a mix right next to “I’m Different”….

      Thoughts?

What Do We Think: Alex Isley Makes A Trip To “The Other Side” A Smoothed Out Affair

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 11, 13

alex isley the other side artwork

One of my favorite indie artists, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and placing into a movie I worked on, “The Last Fall”, has released a new song that is the first look at her upcoming album DreamsInAnalog. Alex Isley is a singular talent in a crowded field of musicians and artists — she’s a self contained singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/producer that crafts amazingly lush, vibrant, downtempo and emotional accessible gems such as the new single “The Other Side”. If you like Jhene Aiko and Stacy Barthe, chances are you will dig Alex Isley.

One of my favorites (and the one that I placed) is “Set In Stone”. If you haven’t heard that, listen to it here.

Hit Alex up on Twitter and let her know where you heard her new single at!

Would You RSVP For “Dinner And A Movie” With Ronald Isley After Hearing This Song?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 10, 13

Now, I will forever and always be a fan of The Isley Bros. but, Mr. Big is definitely showing his age vocally in this song. Some of these notes that he’s struggling to really deliver on this song. “Dinner And A Movie” is not very an exciting song, in and of itself, either.

Ronald Isley has put out some decent songs in his later years however, but “Dinner And A Movie” is not compelling enough to make me run out and see what his latest album will sound like. His trademark falsetto is starting to sound a little long in the tooth, and he can’t deliver like he used to. However, he’s still a classic vocalist and one that we are honored to have around still.

That being said, do you like this song? Am I being too harsh? Would you gift your mother with this single on iTunes?

Luke James’ Ledger Is Definitely In The Black With New Track “I.O.U.”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 15, 13

luke james i.o.u. single i want you grammy nominated wolfjames

Luke James has dropped another joint, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why y’all are latching on to this dude’s vocal skills and great songs…

Luke definitely isn’t a “pop” singer in the current sense, such as a Bruno Mars or a Justin Timberlake, but hands down, he has the better vocal skill and soulful interpretation of the material he is presented. It’s all been very fresh and original, especially his choice of the types of musical beds he sings over. “I.O.U.”

Luke has a voice and a talent that harks back to an older time, where music had a swing & sway, a certain confident braggadocio, and an unabashedly stringent requirement for the best vocal performances on every occasion. “I.O.U.” features his signature croon over a breezy, laid back and smoothed out beat. Get into this.

And to further prove his exceptional talent, he’s even uploaded a quick version of him singing it a capella on the streets of the Big Apple. Hit that after the jump. Y’all like this new one?

Adrian Younge Teams Up With The Delfonics For The Classic-Skewing “Stop And Look (And You Have Found Love)”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 13

“Stop, and look, and you have found love….”

This refrain is hauntingly catchy, and you will walk away from this video repeating this in your head and mouthing it while you’re just sitting around. I promise.

Adrian Younge is a multi-instrumentalist renaissance man, who wears many hats. After garnering attention as an indie artist, he went on to score the majority of the Black Dynamite movie, and has had his hands in some of everything ever since. He struck upon the idea of doing a collaboration with William Hart of The Delfonics, and this single is a result of that pairing. “Stop And Look (And You Have Found Love)” is a mix of the old and the new, and is an imagining of what a Delfonics record might sound like in 2012.

The song is a testament to the timelessness of Soul music and its figures. William Hart makes an appearance and looks good, and it’s interesting to sing him in the visual amongst a group of hip-hop heads — 90′s hip-heads at that. I like this joint, and I look forward to hearing more of their pairing.

And of course, who didn’t love The Delfonics?

Check out a write up about the process and ideas behind the making of this song here as well.

Chrisette Michele’s Asking For “A Couple Of Forevers” And I’ll Give Them Gladly!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 18, 13

I’ve been a little perplexed with Chrisette Michele’s career as of late. She’s recently released a free mixtape but had kind of quiet on the scene for awhile. Judging from her Twitter, she’s been working steadily, but her music output seemed to have dropped after her last album, which I really wasn’t a fan of. Her sounds has seemed to mature but also have gotten a bit more eclectic as she broke away from the sound I’m sure her label had always championed. Her song “Charades” could have gone over more smoother in my opinion without the tacking on of a 2 Chainz verse, but I feel as if it went largely went unnoticed by all but the diehard fans.

However, with “A Couple Of Forevers”, Chrisette has reignited my interest in her solo output. “A Couple Of Forevers” is a rich, warm song that she tackles with much aplomb. I feel as if she’s more interested in this material and thus sings it with a renewed vigor and gravitas. It especially ramps up at the end on the ad-libs — it seems as if Chrisette is in a place vocally that is still strong and rooted in an even more soulful way. Producers Pop & Oak created a fantastic musical bed for her to emote and stretch her vocals over as well. It all works and congeals together very well, and in a very organic and authentic way.

“A Couple Of Forevers” is the proper single from her upcoming album Better that is slated to drop April 20th, and I for one am looking forward to it if she’s going to deliver a body of work that is full of singles/songs like this. Are you a fan? Does this song pique your interest in her music again? Did you download the mixtape? Let us know!

What Do We Think: Lion Babe’s “Treat Me Like Fire” Should Be Handled With Care

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 15, 13

My good friend Durand Bernarr (@alcoholharmony on Twitter, if you’re looking for some good sanging!) put me onto Lion Babe during a trip to Los Angeles, and I haven’t stopped listening to this song EVER SINCE. I love “Treat Me Like Fire”. She’s like a mashup of Rihanna, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, J*DaVeY and some other stuff I can’t quite put my finger on.

The track for this joint is “fire” indeed — and the video is the cherry on top of an already imaginative yet solid and soulful song that stands up as fantastic all by itself.

It’s a bit abstract but yet congeals as a very solid introduction to Lion Babe (Jillian Hervey + Lucas Goodman), and I definitely am looking forward to more from them. Jillian Hervey is also actress Vanessa Williams‘ daughter, if you didn’t know. She is definitely blazing a musical path much different from her 80′s pop star mother.

Go cop this song on iTunes — I did. First actual MP3 I’ve purchased in quite a while.

Somehow, Stacy Barthe Has Made Going To “Hell” Sound SO Appealing

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 15, 13

Stacy Barthe has a new EP which she’s made available to download for free (but will TOTALLY accept your donations also), and “Hell Yeah!” is taken from the P.S. I LOVE YOU EP that dropped earlier this week. Produced by K. Roosevelt, it features Rick Ross and Stacy’s voice pleasantly lilts over the track — but take another listen. The lyrics, which Stacy is dangerous with, and the title are a bit off-putting.

You can cop the EP here or take a listen after the jump if you’d like. There are a couple of great tracks on there. Stacy’s brooding, introspective lyrics always take me to a place and I like to let her warm alto envelop me while I analyze her heartfelt and honest lyrics. As a writer, she’s great. She’s a decent singer as well, but I feel like her music is all about vibe and mood, and she does that well on her solo efforts released thus far.

Also check out “Stingy” — like that one as well!
