    • Rihanna Gets Frisky With Her “Rude Boy” Across The Pond

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 26, 10

I normally don’t do Rihanna “live” performances, but I thought the band was kind of jamming on the 1 with this performance of “Rude Boy” on the Alan Carr show across the pond. Rihanna has on a lunch lady hair net — is that was passes for fashion these days? — and she simulates getting some with her microphone, but at the end of the performance, I got to say that she sounded ALRIGHT for her. I mean, this song has basically no more than 5 or 6 notes but this is the first time I didn’t immediately want to throw myself off a cliff after hearing her perform.

I’m mostly giving that up to the band, though it seems they missed their cue at the beginning cause the drummer was sitting there like…”Oh, do I play NOW?” HA!

I really can’t with that fancy Bajan Aunt Jemima get-up though, LOL. Did you know she’s talking about putting out a new album already — approximately this summer. It’s just been four short months since her last one came out, but she wants lighter, edgier fare this time around. *shrugs*

Classic Flashback: “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)” – Quincy Jones + JD To Do Remake?

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Feb 19, 10

Quincy Jones’ records have been a favorite of mine forever. This record right here ranks HIGH up on that list of faves, #1 being Tamia’s “You Put A Move On My Heart”.

“The Secret Garden” featured Al B. Sure, James Ingram, El Debarge and Barry White on a track that only Quincy could make. Their vocals and the song made this an instant classic and was featured on many an 80′s 90′s slow-jam “get the panties” mixtape LOL. Al B. Sure did some of his best sanging on this song.

Despite Quincy’s major faux pas with that “We Are The World” remake, he’s still one of the best producers of our time.

Sadly, and with a heavy heart, I report to you that Jermaine Dupri is doing a remake of this classic song with Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese and Trey Songz. Yep, I tell no lies.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

The only real vocalist in that group is Tyrese. Everyone else can sit down and have a seat! I MEAN THAT FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY SOUL. I hope Jermaine Dupri’s studio catches on fire before they can ever put this out! LEAVE THE CLASSIC ALONE! Quincy Jones couldn’t remake his own damn song if that’s proof enough Jermaine!

Edit: Apparently Usher already recorded a version by himself recently (snippet)? Don’t know if the new version will be the same or a whole different one… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOWLyrQU7D8

Album Covers: #PhotoshopFAIL 101 with Lady GaGa & Beyoncé

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 19, 10

LOL @ this cover. Beyoncé looks like she is trying to sell us some Girl Scout cookies in a homemade House of Dereon scout uniform and Lady GaGa looks like…well Lady GaGa. She has a phone for a hat! I mean, that’s some old COGIC church mother “I’mma wear my BEST hat because the BISHOP is coming! The Bishop is coming!” But the font and colors just look so corny. I get it is maybe supposed to be retro, but I can’t!

Lawd this is cracking me up. Is it just me?

The “Telephone” remixes will be out March 2nd according to GaGa’s website, and the video should be dropping any day now. I know the kids can’t WAIT.

That picture she used above was from the video:

Kanye Got The Short End Of Taylor Swift’s Stick (Pause?)

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 28, 10

So, Drake, Eminem and Lil’ Wayne with Travis Barker are performing the “Forever” remix most likely on the Grammys on Sunday. Yep, you read that right.

      No Kanye.

You heard it here 1st: nominees @drakkardnoir, @EmiNeM & Lil Wayne in a special performance w @trvsbrkr added to the stellar GRAMMY lineup! about 1 hour ago from web

We could probably speculate all day and all night long and try to be good armchair pundits as to why this is happening without him. Maybe PETA did it? Or he’s too busy with his boo Amber Rose? Or he is doing a seance to channel Michael Jackson’s spirit for his next album opus? Who knows!

I expect an ALL CAPS entry at his blog soon enough LOL.

Oh yeah, Travis Barker? Those last 3 mins above > more interesting than Drake has yet done musically, sorry. I still can’t believe he’s getting ALL this shine w/ no “traditional” album. The vanguard is changing, as well as the times.

Trey Songz Still Bragging About His Sex Game + His “I Wanna Rock” Remix

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 27, 10

Trey Songz’s next single is the braggadocio-heavy “Neighbors Know My Name” – I just hope this dude is wrapping it up LOL. Can’t have him out there like Greg Oden, cause I’m sure if he didn’t, umm, measure up, then he’d lose a lot of fans. I’m just saying LOL!

His warbling vibrato still isn’t my cup of tea but there are occasions when Trey will vocally stumble into a song that turns out to be REALLY decent. I’ve yet to find one on this recent album Ready, though they are calling this his breakout album. “Say Ahh” is moving ya’ll like that?

      Alright.

Also, check his remix of Snoop’s “I Wanna Rock” below. Nothing really stands out, though he has some “interesting” harmonies and vocals that he inserts into the song.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Music Legend Bill Withers Gets The Documentary Treatment

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 26, 10

      This looks amazing!

Bill Withers is such an amazing talent; understated, simple and yet complex as a personality as well. This documentary is premiering today in New York if you are around to view it, you should.

STILL BILL was filmed in part at Celebrate Brooklyn! during Hal Wilner’s Bill Withers Project on August 9, 2008, and is an intimate portrait of soul legend Bill Withers, best known for his classics “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Just the Two of Us.” (More info at the source)

Dr. Cornel West and Sting make appearances in the trailer above. Some of the quotes that they dropped in this short 2 minute span > anything Rev. Run has said on Twitter, I promise you that.

      Sting said:

“The hardest thing to be in songwriting is to be simple, yet profound.”

      Bill Withers said:

It’s okay to head out to Wonderful, but on your way to Wonderful, you’re going to have pass through Alright. And when you get to Alright, take a good look around and get used to it cause that may be as far as you are gonna go.”

      WOW.

Here’s some Bill Withers for you to enjoy as well. “Grandma’s Hands”:

Whitney Houston Is Going On A World Tour! Aren’t You Excited? …

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 26, 10

Whitney Houston has announced that she is going on a world tour, and is titling it the “Nothing But Love” tour. She also tapped  photographer Randee St. Nicholas for this exclusive new photo that you see above.

The tour starts February 6th in South Korea, with US dates to be announced soon. She also is rolling out new singles — internationally, the album cut “Nothin’ But Love” and in the US, “Worth It”, neither of which particularly move me. Her album has only sold 2 million copies worldwide apparently…

The news comes as today is the re-release of the Whitney Houston debut album Whitney Houston, which is celebrating 25 years of launching Whitney’s music career. That is titled Whitney Houston: The Deluxe Anniversary Edition, and I talked about it previously here.

I’m NOT looking forward to being let down vocally and the tons of bootleg Youtube clips that people will be posting of her singing…

However, artists like Whitney, who traditionally hasn’t written her own material, really get a lot of their monies from endorsements, concerts, appearances, etc. I wonder if Whitney’s new deal has some sort of 360 clause?

Tour dates after the jump if you got cash to fly overseas and see her sweat hear Whitney “sing”:

This Is What It Sounds Like When Lambs Cry: Mariah’s “Angel’s Advocate” Remix Album Pushed Back

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 15, 10

Mariah Carey’s remix album, titled Angel’s Advocate, has been pushed back to March 9th, 2010. It had been slated for February, but they’ve pushed it back.

Now, I am gonna say that it was pushed back since they just laid off staff at Universal Music Group — staff that of course would be utilized to go out and “buy” the album; but the real reason is probably because “Precious” also hits DVD that day and she’s also going on a tour of the same name around the same time.

The original just went gold — and I just read that Rihanna went platinum. How/why/who? LOL.

I won’t be paying for this remix album or this tour — this is not the 90′s and there is no ODB in sight so I’m good. As far as the tour — come on, really? I’d rather pull out my MTV Unplugged live of Mariah’s from a grip ago and call it a wrap. Of course the lambs are gonna come out and support. I eat lambchops for dinner though! Pow!

Are Mary and Mariah doing a remix of sorts? That’s gonna sound like Bert & Ernie playing with a See ‘N Say. Lawd. More after the jump!

Whitney Houston Is Celebrating Her 25th Anniversary!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 12, 10

How dope is this?! I love Whitney Houston, have all her albums. Even the new ones where she is sounding like her cousin Dionne Warwick. OLD Whitney was a true certified classic diva of all time LOL. Her songs, her voice…they still give me chills.

On January 26, Arista/Legacy is putting out a re-release of her classic debut album Whitney Houston. It’s been remastered and they’ve added new songs and there’s a bunch of other free stuff they are putting in there. Now THAT’S what I call a re-release. Please, anyone who has released an album in this decade and then put out another version 6 months later — please find a nice corner to sit in and take notes. Minus the drugs/Bobby/drama, Whitney was it!

I hope the rumors I’ve heard lately of her falling off the wagon are NOT true. Though I didn’t really LOVE I Look To You, it was a great comeback story of course, and I definitely was rooting for her in the beginning. ESPECIALLY to stay clean & sober. Music comes second, get your life together first. Be healthy, stay alive!

More details after the jump (tracklists, etc.)!

Beyonce’ Takes A Creole Sabbatical + Mariah Carey Goes Gold

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 12, 10

Beyonce’ is taking a break ya’ll. That’s right, the prayers of the righteous availeth much!

“It’s definitely time to take a break, to recharge my batteries,” says Beyoncé, 28. “I’d like to take about six months and not go into the studio. I need to just live life, to be inspired by things again.” (Source)

The heavens rejoice, the stans lament, and Jay-Z is excited about actually getting some Creole cooking in his kitchen!

I’m glad Beyonce’ is making this decision personally. 6 months might not be long enough, but we need to miss her. And the music has become just a LITTLE stale, so a break is probably going to be creatively. I mean, Sade takes years. Beyonce’ seems to take weeks between albums LOL.

I bet you any new music she comes up with will be better when she comes back! And of course, we still have her upcoming Grammy performances and the yet to be seen “Telephone” video with Lady GaGa. Oh and that faux-ghetto “Put It In A Love Song” video is supposedly dropping too.

And in other news, Mariah Carey just went GOLD. That’s it. Gold. Album sales of course, not digital singles. But still…wow. I remember when Mariah used to be…well, Mariah.
