    • Album Sneak Peeks: Joss Stone Is “Stone’d” And Rahsaan Patterson Is Feeling “Bleu”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 7, 11

Now, Joss Stone is one of those artists that people seem to either love, or hate. Me personally, I loved her album Introducing Joss Stone. It was a well produced, funky, authentically soulful peek into the artist known as Joss Stone. And with Raphael Saadiq at the helm, it was well worth the wait.

Joss Stone has been the target of much criticism and disdain since the beginning of her career from “soul” purists, but in an age of Adele and other UK songstresses topping the US charts, will she finally get her just due? Her new album LP1 is due out in the US July 26th, and is her first on her own label Stone’d Records after many well-publicized label woes with former home EMI. It’s ALSO helmed by the fantastic Eurythmics member Dave Stewart. It’s sounding like it might be a fruitful collab, but time will tell. I’m willing to at least give it a spin! Are you?

One of my personal favorite singers EVER, Rahsaan Patterson, is also getting ready to put out his new record. Bleuphoria is due out in the US on July 19th, and I am very very excited. The album features such luminaries as Lalah Hathaway, Faith Evans, Jody Watley, and more, I’m sure. “6 AM” is my JOINT, and it stays on constant repeat.

In the above clip, Rahsaan talks about the story behind Bleuphoria, and friends and collaborators Lalah Hathaway and Faith Evans also weigh in with their thoughts. This album is sure to be another feather in Rahsaan’s cap, and a prime addition to his already stellar discography. Are you feeling “bleu”? Review coming soon by the way…

After Ten Years, Alicia Keys’ “Songs In A Minor” Still Holds Up

Written by Donovan in Blogs on Jun 14, 11

Remember those braids?!?! Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. On June 28, 2011, Alicia Keys will celebrate the 10th anniversary of her breakthrough album Songs In A Minor by releasing a Collector’s Edition that will feature alternate versions of the songs from the album and a DVD chronicling the creation of the album. Here is a sample of the documentary featured on the DVD.

It is amazing to think how much time has passed by since Keys smacked everyone on their heads with her soaring ballad “Fallin’” and followed up with a great collection of songs. I remember the first time I heard her was on Jermaine Dupri‘s 25 Days of Christmas where she did her on spin on “Little Drummer Boy” called “Little Drummer Girl” which I still whip out every winter.

I also forgot just how big this album was and what it did for R&B during the time it came out. I wish she would get back to making some R&B gems instead of focusing on being a crossover artist. Maybe, this will get her inspiration flowing back in that direction for her next album. I can hope! So what were your favorite songs off this album? I’m gonna celebrate it by playing the version I bought ten years ago!

Hopefully JoJo Can Finally Stop “Jumping Trains”

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jun 14, 11

I became a fan of JoJo after her last album The High Road and her mixtape Can’t Take That Away from Me where (*in my The IPS voice*) she does her GOOD singing. This seems like it will be more of the same. Here is a live version of “Jumping Trains” off of her upcoming album of the same name. It is a ballad which sounds like it touches the struggles of a relationship that isn’t worth her time or energy or could be a shady dig at her old label. Either way, JoJo sounds and looks great. My oh my she’s grown up! I will definitely be copping this album when it comes out. What do we think?

Michael Jackson Better Do His Good Singing, Even If He Is Dead, Or I’m Going To Be Mad!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 5, 10

Michael Jackson’s first posthumous album Michael hits stores 14 days before my BIRTHDAY on December 14th, 2010. It features all new tracks apparently, and Teddy Riley is rumored to have done some production work as well. The first single “Breaking News” will be streaming for a week starting on Monday. You can bet your bottom dollar I will be posting that here! THE ONLY person I stan for, in life and death, is Michael Jackson. Well, and Jesus Christ of course, but that’s a given! LOL.

Although many details remain unclear, Sony have announced that the album will be called Michael, with a trailer providing more information due to appear on michaeljackson.com today. There are also plans to stream Breaking News, a full song from the album, on Monday for one week. The song was originally recorded in 2007 but has only been recently completed.

Other tracks on Michael are thought to have been recorded at various studios in LA and Las Vegas, with Jackson believed to have been collaborating with artists such as Akon, Lady Gaga and RedOne at the time of his death. Hardcore Jackson fans will be relieved to note the cover art is suitably ludicrous – a Kadir Nelson oil painting depicting two naked cherubs placing a crown on Jackson’s head, against a background mural featuring the singer at various stages in his career…(Source)

And in other news, Katherine Jackson is set to be on Oprah and it should be airing this upcoming week as well…Katherine and the family were alleging that some of these songs were imposters, but I think there was a midnight hour compromise and things were worked out. We will find out…

This album cover is EPIC though! LOL.

Say What!? Prince Releasing A New Album…In Belgium?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 28, 10

If you notice that shirt Prince had on tonight at the BET Awards 2010, you will see it was a picture of him. Wearing that same outfit almost. ONLY Prince! And my bet recap is coming later…I think. Maybe. I don’t know, if time permits LOL.

However, if you saw the back side (which I did notice earlier), it said “20Ten” and the the “ten” was inside the 0 of the 20. I was wondering if that was referring to something special, and sure enough, I stumbled upon this:

Prince’s new CD 20Ten (some title) will be released first through a Belgium newspaper on July 10. An interview took place with the newspaper which teases the release.

Other newspaper deals may follow as deals were trying to be reached. Warner Bros. was mentioned as releasing the CD to other countries not participating in the newspaper giveaway. More than likely that means the U.S. as when he did the giveaway before, the U.S. was not part of it. [Source]

Say word!?! Prince’s post heyday music has been sketchy at best — and while he will always be PRINCE, I think we can only take so much mediocre-ish music. But, he’s a legend, and “Black Sweat” was my ish, so I will of course download this illegally since it may or may not be coming to the US…

Don’t know if this is a rumor or not, but I guess we will find out soon enough!

Just In: The Queen Project (Tamia, Kelly Price & Deborah Cox) Is On Hold For Now

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 14, 10

Tamia, Kelly Price & Deborah Cox AKA The Queen Project

I just got word that the “supergroup” The Queen Project that consisted of  R&B vocal powerhouses Tamia, Kelly Price, and Deborah Cox has been put on hold for now, and the ladies are pursuing individual projects in the meantime.

Sad news, I was really looking forward to what they were coming up with!

In the meantime, I just posted Kelly Price’s new single “Tired” — and an update to that is that her new album Kelly will be out in August. Not sure what the other two ladies are up to, but I know I’m not the only fan that is sad about this news…

Classic Flashback: Quincy Jones – “Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me)” Feat. Tevin Campbell

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Mar 12, 10

This song, “Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me)” is taken from the quintessential American producer and everything else Quincy Jones’ 1989 album Back on the Block, which featured a cast of luminaries too long to list. And when I say luminaries I mean luminaries!!

Well, a very young Tevin Campbell was tapped to sing this song that Quincy produced and arranged w/ lyrics by Siedah Garrett, and sing did he ever! Tevin’s voice was CRAZY for him to be song young, seriously. It makes me sad that voices like his are no longer heard and we are left with bleating goats and flat-voiced piano playing females. *sigh*

What’s making even more sad is that Quincy is putting out another album. Only this time, there are no luminaries, really *Sad Chris Brown play my records please face*. It’s called Q: Soul Bossa Nostra and will feature such stars as Akon, 3 6 Mafia, T-Pain and even Wyclef with that Haitian yodel. Have mercy. This will either be really good or REALLY unpalatable.

Hit the jump for the press release that marks the end of the world as we know it LOL.

Can We Expect More Belting That Can’t Be Replicated Live From Kelly Rowland’s New Album?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 11, 10

This is all well and good, but I just can’t help but think about EVERY TIME that she’s sung “When Love Takes Over” live, she’s cracked on them high notes. It’s high, and I know she can do it (at least in the studio), but I always feel like I’m expecting to be let down!

I love Kelly Rowland though, and I wish her the best with this new album. I always root for the underdog, and if this album goes Dereon Sequins plaque status, she might have to stick to singing backup for David Guetta’s turntables when someone bumps the table. This is your last chance Kelly!

Ms. Kelly actually wasn’t THAT bad, better sequencing, drop a track or two and replace with some bonafide hits and she could have done something.
