    • New Music: Jordin Sparks & Whitney Houston Sparkle On “Celebrate”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 21, 12

Audio of one of Whitney Houston’s last recordings has leaked. It’s taken from the upcoming Sparkle movie soundtrack, and it features Whitney’s “Million Dollar Bill”-esque vocals mixed with Jordin Sparks’ youthful and clear as a bell vocal.

I have to say, I don’t think I am ready for this movie. It’s still super sad thinking about Whitney Houston being gone, and watching the Billboard Music Awards last night and hearing Bobbi Kristina accept the award on her mom’s behalf just made it that much more fresh in my mind.

I will say however that “Celebrate” isn’t anything special. Whitney’s taking the low road in terms of notes sung, and setting the stage really for Jordin Sparks to do all the heavy lifting. It’s such a drastic change, but one that isn’t unfamiliar. Whitney’s vocal sounds on par with those of her I Look To You album. This song is nothing special however, and may make more sense in context with the rest of the movie, but still, rest in peace Nippy.

“Sparkle” is due out in August and features Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Omar Epps, Mike Epps, and a whole lot of other people.

“Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” Movie Coming Soon? This Trailer/Promo Is FRESH

Written by The IPS in Movies on Jun 9, 10

This had the Internet going nuts like Paul Wall back in the day when it hit today…except for no one knows what it is for. Video game? Movie? What?

After some scouring, I found this:

Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short “Mortal Kombat” film (subtitled “Rebirth”) that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year’s Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word “Kombat” already a trending topic on Twitter. (Source)

I’m ALL for this, because this looked DOPE. As technology progresses, all of the fantasy stories that we read and played as we were younger can REALLY be brought to life. I’m still enjoying “G.I. Joe”. Don’t judge me. But this is the kind of movie treatment that MK needed the first time around.

Watch it in HD — it’s pretty dope.

Friday Foolery: Liza Minnelli’s Cover of Single Ladies Has Snatched My Soul + 50 Tyson…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 21, 10

I don’t even know what to say! WHAT TO DO!? WHAT TO THINK!? HOW DO I PROCESS THIS!?

And if you make it to the end, the modulations?! ROFL…

Liza…sister, you are a bold one for this.

This is going to be on the “Sex And The City 2″ soundtrack. For real. Like, no joke.

So, who going to cremate me today? Please have 50 Tyson sweep up the ashes and put them in the gold-plated urn I got from Wal-mart. Thanks!

      He said…”And I’m sweet sixteen…and next year I will be…”

It took him a COOL minute to remember that 17 comes after 16. He covered it up with a “REEEEEEMIX!” I’m headed off this planet. Please, don’t give your kids cameras if they are special needs or not capable of using them properly….I didn’t want to laugh but I can’t help it!!

It’s Easy To Forget That Eddie Murphy Is Funny…

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Movies on May 20, 10

Eddie Murphy was on Jay Leno last night to promote “Shrek Forever After”, the latest and last in the line of “Shrek” movies. Sidenote: Can you believe I’ve never seen a Shrek movie?

That’s good and all that, go see the movie, but I really thought Eddie was funny during this interview. Naturally. It wasn’t forced or anything. His impressions were spot on, too. It reminded that despite his latest flops in the theatres, dude has history and his standup was always hilarious. I own every Eddie Murphy from back in the day too. I quote “Boomerang” daily.

Still, he’s barking up the wrong tree with these rumors of him writing a “Nutty Professor 3″. Yikes.

And 8 kids!? I didn’t know he had that big of a family…and I didn’t know he played instruments. Cool interview.

Mary J. Blige Will Play Nina Simone In Biopic “Nina”

Written by The IPS in Movies on May 13, 10

Mary J. Blige has signed up for another film role, and I personally feel it may be the one she was born to play. Just like Jamie Foxx excelled as Ray Charles in “Ray” — I think “Nina” could be Mary’s breakout role and could cement her as a multi-hyphenate if they can pull it off right.

Nina Simone was an acclaimed composer, pianist, singer, songwriter, activist, and more. She passed about 5 years ago, but her legacy lives on:

R&B songstress Mary J. Blige will tune up her jazz vocals after signing to star in Cynthia Mort’s “Nina,” a movie about legendary singer Nina Simone.

Mort’s script focuses on Simone’s relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo, backers said. (Source)

I’m hopeful for this! Visually, Mary can pass as a Nina Simone look-alike and while the jazz/piano chops may be hard to imitate, she could probably learn (close approximations of) them. This is a role that Mary MAY be able to pull off. I’m willing to give her a chance.

She may not be the perfect person — if not, who would you all suggest? Throw some ideas out.

News Bits For Your Monday: Bad Boys 3, Bobby Brown, SNL, Lena Horne RIP, Drake & Janelle Monae

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 10, 10

There may be a Bad Boys 3 happening in the very near future, ON TOP of Men In Black 3 being confirmed! [Coming Soon]

We live in a world where Bobby Brown is getting engaged and where Chilli can’t get a man. Wow. [People]

Betty White was HILARIOUS on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Seriously. I cannot stop laughing at “Wizard of Ass”. Check the clip above! Jay-Z was the musical host, but I wasn’t especially moved by any of his performances. Though his drummer Tony Royster, Jr. is one of my personal favorites.

RIP Lena Horne, one of the pioneering Black actresses in her own right and also a fantastic and emotionally captivating singer. Most folks of the younger generation will remember her as Glenda the Good Witch from “The Wiz”, which also featured Michael Jackson :( [New York Times]

Don’t forget ya’ll — Drake can ACT too! Looking for the right material though…. [MTV News]

Listen to snippets from Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid, which is due out May 18th. Seems very theatrical, dark yet light and operatic. I think the singles may have been a bit misleading…but still great music nonetheless.

Music Legend Bill Withers Gets The Documentary Treatment

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 26, 10

      This looks amazing!

Bill Withers is such an amazing talent; understated, simple and yet complex as a personality as well. This documentary is premiering today in New York if you are around to view it, you should.

STILL BILL was filmed in part at Celebrate Brooklyn! during Hal Wilner’s Bill Withers Project on August 9, 2008, and is an intimate portrait of soul legend Bill Withers, best known for his classics “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Just the Two of Us.” (More info at the source)

Dr. Cornel West and Sting make appearances in the trailer above. Some of the quotes that they dropped in this short 2 minute span > anything Rev. Run has said on Twitter, I promise you that.

      Sting said:

“The hardest thing to be in songwriting is to be simple, yet profound.”

      Bill Withers said:

It’s okay to head out to Wonderful, but on your way to Wonderful, you’re going to have pass through Alright. And when you get to Alright, take a good look around and get used to it cause that may be as far as you are gonna go.”

      WOW.

Here’s some Bill Withers for you to enjoy as well. “Grandma’s Hands”:

Anika Noni Rose Is Disney’s First Black Princess! Are You Excited?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Dec 8, 09

I’m not one for Disney movies, but I love Anika Noni Rose, so I kind of want to go see “The Princess and the Frog”, which hits theatres finally on this Friday, December 11th. Rose stars as Disney’s first black princess, Princess Tiana. Though I hear she is a frog for the majority of the movie, wamp.

There’s also a soundtrack (which is out now) full of original music by Randy Newman (who also scored and composed for the film), and stars such as Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lewis and Rose herself. You can watch a live clip of her singing “Almost There” on “Good Morning America” a couple of weeks ago — she sounds great!

I’d take my little cousins to see this movie, as it is a pretty historic event for Disney. I’m not a real animated movie fan though, and haven’t seen a lot of “classic” Disney joints — don’t judge me. But I’m all for diversifying, and though there has been some backlash about this movie…when isn’t there backlash about anything as sensitive as race and how we handle it in America?

Are you going to check this out?

      Music Video: “Fame”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 23, 09

Me personally, I am NOT excited about this movie. I mean, the original Fame movie is a classic…and I’m not up for Hollywood doing all these remakes. It comes out on Friday though, so we will soon see what the public thinks!

The sheen and gloss and sheer level of production that these movies tend to have really just don’t sit well with me. I don’t think Naturi Naughton (AKA Lil’ Kim, wamp) is vocally capable to carry this theme song on her shoulders. There’s rapping. Ummm…

I just don’t know! See the original after the jump.

I may go see it though just on GP, and my Play-Auntie Debbie Allen is in it LOL. What say you Feedbackers?

      Movie Posters: “Takers”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Sep 15, 09

I posted the trailer for “Takers” previously, but now the movie poster is out.

LOL, I mean, this movie — I will probably go and see it, but this poster is LOL-worthy. Folks’ heads look all askew and bigger than their bodies, T.I. has this weird grin that makes him look he wants to “take your cookies”, it’s just weird. The only one that looks decent and normal is Idris.

I don’t know, this movie is gonna be packed with A) ladies for all the “man candy” and B) all the fellas for all the action and explosions and the T.I. factor I think.

      But this poster…LOL!
