    • Music Legend Bill Withers Gets The Documentary Treatment

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 26, 10

      This looks amazing!

Bill Withers is such an amazing talent; understated, simple and yet complex as a personality as well. This documentary is premiering today in New York if you are around to view it, you should.

STILL BILL was filmed in part at Celebrate Brooklyn! during Hal Wilner’s Bill Withers Project on August 9, 2008, and is an intimate portrait of soul legend Bill Withers, best known for his classics “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Just the Two of Us.” (More info at the source)

Dr. Cornel West and Sting make appearances in the trailer above. Some of the quotes that they dropped in this short 2 minute span > anything Rev. Run has said on Twitter, I promise you that.

      Sting said:

“The hardest thing to be in songwriting is to be simple, yet profound.”

      Bill Withers said:

It’s okay to head out to Wonderful, but on your way to Wonderful, you’re going to have pass through Alright. And when you get to Alright, take a good look around and get used to it cause that may be as far as you are gonna go.”

      WOW.

Here’s some Bill Withers for you to enjoy as well. “Grandma’s Hands”:

Anika Noni Rose Is Disney’s First Black Princess! Are You Excited?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Dec 8, 09

I’m not one for Disney movies, but I love Anika Noni Rose, so I kind of want to go see “The Princess and the Frog”, which hits theatres finally on this Friday, December 11th. Rose stars as Disney’s first black princess, Princess Tiana. Though I hear she is a frog for the majority of the movie, wamp.

There’s also a soundtrack (which is out now) full of original music by Randy Newman (who also scored and composed for the film), and stars such as Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lewis and Rose herself. You can watch a live clip of her singing “Almost There” on “Good Morning America” a couple of weeks ago — she sounds great!

I’d take my little cousins to see this movie, as it is a pretty historic event for Disney. I’m not a real animated movie fan though, and haven’t seen a lot of “classic” Disney joints — don’t judge me. But I’m all for diversifying, and though there has been some backlash about this movie…when isn’t there backlash about anything as sensitive as race and how we handle it in America?

Are you going to check this out?

      Music Video: “Fame”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 23, 09

Me personally, I am NOT excited about this movie. I mean, the original Fame movie is a classic…and I’m not up for Hollywood doing all these remakes. It comes out on Friday though, so we will soon see what the public thinks!

The sheen and gloss and sheer level of production that these movies tend to have really just don’t sit well with me. I don’t think Naturi Naughton (AKA Lil’ Kim, wamp) is vocally capable to carry this theme song on her shoulders. There’s rapping. Ummm…

I just don’t know! See the original after the jump.

I may go see it though just on GP, and my Play-Auntie Debbie Allen is in it LOL. What say you Feedbackers?

      Movie Posters: “Takers”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Sep 15, 09

I posted the trailer for “Takers” previously, but now the movie poster is out.

LOL, I mean, this movie — I will probably go and see it, but this poster is LOL-worthy. Folks’ heads look all askew and bigger than their bodies, T.I. has this weird grin that makes him look he wants to “take your cookies”, it’s just weird. The only one that looks decent and normal is Idris.

I don’t know, this movie is gonna be packed with A) ladies for all the “man candy” and B) all the fellas for all the action and explosions and the T.I. factor I think.

      But this poster…LOL!

Movie News: “Bad Boys” Sequel In The Works?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Aug 31, 09

I AM EXCITED, even for the possibility. I own all the movies + the soundtracks. Yep!

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are always a good combo to me, I don’t care what anyone says. If Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan can make a “Rush Hour 3″, why can’t they do another “Bad Boys”?! Plus, Will needs some more action. What is Martin doing anyway lately?

Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the high-octane “Bad Boys” franchise, tapping Peter Craig to pen the screenplay.

The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.

The “Boys” movies feature Smith and Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, caught up in cases involving car chases and explosions.

The first “Boys,” released in 1995, helped launch Bay as a director and Smith as an action star even though it was not a fire-stamped blockbuster — it grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide.

The sequel, released in 2003 when Bay and Smith’s stars had risen, grossed $138 million domestically and $273 million worldwide.

All parties have expressed a willingness to return if a story can be hammered out. One potential hurdle, however, would be the costly deals with the players. (Source)

Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Rehearsal Film Coming Soon…For Two Weeks

Written by The IPS in Movies on Aug 21, 09

The film with rehearsal footage of Michael Jackson’s last concert tour is indeed getting released. However, it’ll only be a short run, so you better get ready to deal with all them crazy MJ fans that pass out and will try and do some crazy ish like seeing it every single day of it’s limited run. You know someone will, mark my words!

Sony Pictures and Sony Music are releasing “Michael Jackson: This Is It” for a limited two-week run, and pushing up the film’s opening two days to Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Sony will put the tickets on sale Sept. 27. (Source)

Sony paid $60 million for the film and they are sure to get their money back by limiting this run and making it a sold out event. Should be a nice chunk of change for everyone involved.

I also hear that they are going to put it out on DVD as well.

Me personally I’m not too sure if I want to see this — it may just be a sad reminder of how frail and ginger Michael was. We will see though…what ya’ll think?

Christina Milian Is Fighting To The Finish…Of Her Career.

Written by YTMatt in Movies on Aug 18, 09

Christina Milian’s last album dropped in 2006 and couldn’t even break 200k (her first 2 didn’t even break 400k). Based on her IMDB profile, she doesn’t get a whole heck of a lot of work, but somehow…she and/or her people thought it’d be a great idea to use the 4th Bring it On installment of the franchise to be a vehicle for Christina Milian.

When I saw the direct-to-DVD commercial this weekend, I kind of chuckled. Poor thing is so pretty, seems so nice, yet no one wants to hire her! Worse yet, poor thing bears such a striking resemblance to Rihanna, sings just as well (with Tricky/The-Dream Cool & Dre a good producer), yet has considerably less success.

“White Chicks” Part 2, Coming Soon! Aren’t You Excited…!?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Aug 17, 09

Oh boy, from G.I. Joe to…cross-dressing.

The Wayans Brothers and Sony are developing a sequel to the 2004 comedy “White Chicks,” which will see Marlon and Shawn Wayans reprise their roles as sibling FBI agents posing as a pair of white ladies.

Keenen Ivory Wayans is on board to direct the sequel, which all three Wayans are writing and producing. The logline for the new entry is being kept under wraps.

Rick Alvarez, the Wayans’ long-time producing partner, is producing along with Joe Roth, under his Roth Films banner. Roth’s Revolution Studios made the first movie, which Sony distributed.

The original was a surprise hit, grossing almost $70 million domestically from a budget of around $37 million.

The trio last worked together on “Dance Flick,” which they acted in, produced and co-wrote with family members Craig Wayans and Damien Dante Wayans.

Keenan last directed 2006’s “Little Man” while Marlon, repped by WME and Lisa Blum, can currently be seen on screens as Ripcord in “G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” (Source)

Does Shawn do anything outside of the Wayans Family films?! We know Marlon does, but I think Shawn is happy collecting his checks on the low. Can Kim get a cameo!? I’m saying!

At any rate, the first White Chicks was a hot mess but yet, I’ve seen it a million times. I can’t even front LOL. Would I want to see another one? Probably not. Especially if that fool Terry Crews is going to be in it butt-naked on a polar bear rug.

I wonder what their song of choice will be? Last time it was Vanessa Carlton’s “1000 Miles”. How about…Britney Spears’ “Circus” LOL. Or “Womanizer” — comedy! Kevin Federline can make an appearance as a…bodyguard. Dude is HUGE now.

The “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire” Movie Poster is Dope…

Written by The IPS in Movies on Jul 8, 09

HitFix has the debut of the official poster for the film version of the Sapphire-written book Push. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is being presented by Lionsgate, Tyler Perry and Oprah. If you haven’t read the book, it’s a short but emotional read. The trailers for this alone have had me on the edge of my seat. I went and copped the book and read that as well.

It really just makes you realize that you never know WHAT is going on behind closed doors. The girl they casted to play Precious (Gabourey Sidibe)…wow. She brings the book’s mental image of the character to life. It’s kind of crazy.

I think the casting was superb though. I am seriously looking forward to this movie! How dope is this poster though!? Lionsgate is known for their marketing and this is a slam dunk.

Trailer: “A Day In The Life” — All Hip-Hop Dialogue Movie

Written by The IPS in Movies on Jun 5, 09

This is groundbreaking? It’s nothing but MTV’s Carmen: A Hip-Hopera meets Belly LOL! Sticky Fingaz is doing it for himself though, so I ain’t mad.

It does like semi-interesting though, until Michael Rappaport started rapping…I can’t.

Comes out on DVD July 7th. Glad to see black people helping themselves and making sure they can put pampers on the table!
