    • Somehow, Stacy Barthe Has Made Going To “Hell” Sound SO Appealing

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 15, 13

Stacy Barthe has a new EP which she’s made available to download for free (but will TOTALLY accept your donations also), and “Hell Yeah!” is taken from the P.S. I LOVE YOU EP that dropped earlier this week. Produced by K. Roosevelt, it features Rick Ross and Stacy’s voice pleasantly lilts over the track — but take another listen. The lyrics, which Stacy is dangerous with, and the title are a bit off-putting.

You can cop the EP here or take a listen after the jump if you’d like. There are a couple of great tracks on there. Stacy’s brooding, introspective lyrics always take me to a place and I like to let her warm alto envelop me while I analyze her heartfelt and honest lyrics. As a writer, she’s great. She’s a decent singer as well, but I feel like her music is all about vibe and mood, and she does that well on her solo efforts released thus far.

Also check out “Stingy” — like that one as well!

What Do We Think: Watch The Duck Get It “Poppin’ Off” With Their Blend Of Dub Step & Trap Rap

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 10, 12

Do you like dub step? Well, coming out of ATL (by way of Montgomery, AL) is a new group of 3 DJ’s/instrumentalists called Watch The Duck (Jessie Rankins, Eddie Smith & Jonathan Wells). They call their music “trap step” — trap rap + dub step mixed together. I’ve also heard it called soul dub step. In any case, it’s fairly interesting.

Take some simple, dumbed down dub step progressions, add some James Brown posturing with the vocals, throw in some popping and locking, and you have the “Poppin’ Off” video that you see above. In my mind, it’s like Outkast, James Brown and Soulja Boy had a illicit affair with Skrillex.

Though not the most musically invigorating or innovative thing ever, I think it’s an interesting union of different styles. Dub step as a whole has become homogenized and mainstreamed (as well as “trap” music), but I for one would have never really thought to put them together. It’s ultimately not that big of a stretch, and kind of works on some levels.

Gotta give it Watch The Duck for this one — I wonder how far outside of the Georgia state line this will progress. If you’re intrigued, you can listen to their mixtape Rub-A-Dub (which they say is R&B + dub step = Rub-A-Dub) on SoundCloud here. And also check their official website. Tell them Tha Feedback sent you!

New Music For You To Weigh In On: Angie Stone, Mitchelle’l, Roane & Reva, Tweet & MORE!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 12, 12

Angie Stone – “Do What Ya Gotta Do”

I love this song. I’m a little late posting this, yes I know, but Angie Stone has ALWAYS been a favorite of mine, and this song continues that streak. Though her last album Unexpected went largely unnoticed by many, the single “I Ain’t Hearin’ You” was a nice lil slice of uptempo soul from Angie. However, “Do What U Gotta Do” really does it for me. Angie sounds great, and while the vocal isn’t perfect, it’s soulful in a way that her voice feels like a familiar warm blanket with a few holes in it from use. And I’m okay with that. Do you like this joint? Both Angie and D’Angelo are making a return this year — it’s a good year for SOUL music then! Her new album Rich Girl is coming soon!

      Mitchelle’l - “Irene”

Mitchelle’l (This name though? This is wearing me OUT!!) is the latest signee to T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records. His first song to come from this pairing is “Irene”. Mitchelle’l gives me hints of a DeBarge (choose one), D’Angelo, and a lil bit of many of those similar types that have come before him. In 2012, with the re-emergence of Angie Stone (see above) and D’Angelo, maybe the time is right for this kind of sound. It’s been my experience though that the shadow of D’Angelo is hard to break out of, and Mitchelle’l is not shining THAT brightly with THIS song. However, with Usher waving his glowsticks in arenas overseas, maybe Mitchelle’l can get a breakthrough hit. But he’s going to have to change that name LOL. Thoughts?

Roane Namuh & Reva DeVito – “Should Have Known”

Local band to my neck of the woods, Portland, OR, Roane Namuh (@RoaneNamuh) & Reva DeVito (@RevaDeVito) are a pair of kids that you wouldn’t expect to be making music the likes of which is featured on their project Cloudshine. However, my favorite track from the album is “Should Have Known”, and it’s a breezy, carefree soulful jam that glides effortlessly along. Reva DeVito is no vocal-powerhouse, but she isn’t required to be when paired with the genre-bending producer Roane Namuh. You can turn this joint on, roll down the windows, and enjoy the nice summer day, all day son. Self-described as “space-boogie/funk/soul/jazz/hip-hop/r&b/disco”, the project is available at a “Name your own price” price at their Bandcamp page. You should download it. Also check out the title track “Cloudshine”. Disco! Roller skates! White people can be funky too, even ones from Portland, OR!

Indie Tuesday: It’s Not “Peculiar” At All That Oddisee Has Flipped This Marvin Gaye Sample Into Something Dope

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 5, 12

Taken from Oddisee’s Odd Renditions, Vol. 001, hip-hop emcee/producer/swiss army knife Oddisee has flipped the seminal Marvin Gaye jam “Ain’t That Peculiar” into a smoldering, soul-laced jam that expertly plays upon Marvin’s voice and Oddisee’s rhymes. This jam goes. I’ve been listening to it for a while, only to find out that he actually selling it along with three other songs that he’s flipped well as well. Three songs that you’ve probably never heard of even: Bon Iver’s “Paralyzed”, Metronomy’s “The Gold Is Mine”, and K-Os’s “Man I Used To Be”. Listen to the track below, and check out the trippy but well done video after the jump!

BTW, if you like this (and I am pretty sure  you will!), Oddisee’s has dropped a new album today called People Here What They See. I haven’t had the chance to listen to it yet, but you can hit up this link to listen to it in its entirety, and if you like, be sure to cop!

Mixtapes: Someone Compiled A LaToiya Williams Mixtape! You Should Get This!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 15, 12

I follow one of the most underrated singers ever, LaToiya Williams, on Twitter, and she retweeted a mixtape someone compiled of most, if not all, of her “songs” that have come out over the years. You may (but probably not) remember her ONLY single, “Fallen Star”, that was featured on one of Snoop Dogg’s posse albums (whose label she was also signed to) back in the day. She’s also sung on a grip of hooks for other artists as well, including Snoop, Freeway, Jay-Z…the list goes on.

Someone over at MusicNerdery compiled this joint, and so I am providing it to you! I’ve been jamming all morning. It includes “Fallen Star” and also the song for the video she dropped awhile ago, “I Can’t Leave You Alone”. No version of “Party All Night” though, that was my jam! LaToiya is a West Coast treasure and I really hope that she puts out a classic album. This woman SINGS.

Things You Should Ch-Ch-Check Out: Waajeed x DJ Topspin, Nancy Wilson & Robert Glasper

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 9, 12

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I just discovered via the Twitters this blendtape put out by acclaimed blender DJ Topspin. Peep it. It takes some exclusive beats from Waajeed of PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) and vocals from their last album and remixes them. It’s pretty soulful and original, and Topspin’s ear is pretty on. The latter half is a bunch of Dilla remixes. RIP Dilla. Also, today is the anniversary of Biggie’s death as well.

More celebratory sounds for the month of February, the month of J Dilla’s birth [2/07/74] & his death [2/10/06]…

For this one, I paired new & exclusive beats from WAAJEED to remix his PPP debut album ‘Triple P’. For the 2nd half, I put the many Jay Dee / Dilla flips & remixes I’ve constructed over the years on display. #TURNITUP!

Cop the tape on DJ Topspin’s website here, and peep the remix of Faith Evans’ “U Gets No Love” above, which I particularly enjoyed.

Today’s Classic Flashback is none of other than Nancy Wilson! I love Nancy Wilson’s voice. She’s an impeccable song stylist, and why I have fallen in love with her over the past year or so randomly baffles me. However, I cannot get enough of the way she styles a song. One of my favorite joints by her is “Where Does That Leave Me”. Please get into that song and this voice. Go download some Nancy Wilson material today if you feeling taking a stroll down Good Music Lane and Great Voice Way. You won’t be disappointed.

Robert Glasper Experiment – Black Radio
4.5 starts out of 5 stars

The Robert Glasper Experiment has put out their latest opus,Black Radio. If you don’t purchase anything else this month, you need to get this.

This is Robert Glasper’s most accessible record, and wow, is it fantastic. It features the likes of Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, the list goes ON. It’s sad, ironic, and really a shame that despite the title of the radio, you’ll most likely never hear any of these songs on any mainstream radio. And the fact that there is still a demarcation between “black” radio or otherwise is backwards STILL.

That being said, this album, despite the complex musicalities of it, is a great balance between Glasper’s (and his cohorts) musical genius and his need to garner mainstream attention. He does it. It’s a musically dense yet well-played and orchestrated record. Erykah Badu does her thing on her cover of “Afro Blue”, Ledisi ministers on her cut “Gonna Be Alright”, Stokley of Mint Condition channels Stevie Wonder on “Why Do We Try”, and Glasper’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the stuff that legendary live shows will be made of. Too many highlights. Get this. You’ll have to listen to it at least 3x to digest fully, I bet.

What Do We Think: Is The Sky “The Limit” For Kirby Maurier?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 1, 12

Got this joint in my inbox, wasn’t really feeling it 100% at first…but then I found myself singing it in my head repeatedly. So I downloaded it and put it in my Google Music and now I listen to it constantly!

Kirby Maurier’s voice is reminiscent of such high pitched yet powerful in their own right female vocalists such as Denice Williams and Michel’le to me. “Sky’s The Limit” starts off as semi-serious in tone, but the beat is instantly catchy. Kirby launches into her vocal range after she starts with a slow and low opening line. Then, the hook drops and you realize that her tremulous voice is NOT a game.

What do you think about this song? If you like it, check out her EP “Class of ’96″, which you can get here as a free download. I’d suggest copping it and forming your own opinion on that. Come back and share with the rest of the class in the comments section though!

Teedra Moses Wants “Another Luvr”. I Want Another Video.

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 23, 12

I love Teedra Moses‘ latest mixtape, The Luxurious Undergrind. The songs, the vibe, the sequencing, the production…it was all just RIGHT and worked. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while, and now that she’s signed to Maybach Music Group, it’s looking more and more like we will get another proper sophomore album from her. Finally!

In the meantime, she’s released “Another Luvr” in remix form with Wale (also a MMG signee) in order to hold us over.

While I’m glad for a visual and glad to see that Rick Ross hasn’t stuck her on a backburner as of yet. This video is kind of…just here. Teedra looks gerat, the song still goes hard, but I really would have rather her just work on getting out a proper album NOW instead of taking a break for this almost 5 minute long piece of “art”. It’s all good though, it’s good to see her back on the grind.

Coverage: Daley Feels “Like A Virgin” + “Alone Together” Duet Video Premieres

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 23, 12

Daley is the voice of The Gorillaz’ “Doncamatic”, and he’s also put out a mixtape that I am really enjoying called “Those Who Wait”. You can cop his mixtape on his website here.

He also has a FANTASTIC DUET on there with Marsha Ambrosius called “Alone Together” that I haven’t stopped playing since I initially heard it, despite my general distaste of Ms. Ex-Floetry. She always shines in duets to me though.

Daley takes on Madonna’s classic with much aplomb however and I don’t hate his cover at all. What do y’all think? He sings it higher than Madonna, that’s for damn sure LOL!

Peep the video for “Alone Together” as well after the jump.
