    • “How Many Drinks” Will It Take To Get You To Download Miguel’s New Single?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 22, 13

Miguel’s video for “How Many Drinks?” has come to us, and this time, with the addition of Kendrick Lamar.

“How Many Drinks?” was one of my favorites from Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream album, so I am glad to see it get the video treatment. The first thought that comes to mind when I see this video? Miguel is Prince meets Ziggy Stardust aka David Bowie with a little bit of urban braggadocio and machismo thrown in for good measure.

That being said, I really liked Kendrick’s verse on this version, and it was nice to see them showing their home city of LA love with their attire.

Not sure this video/single will make Miguel any new fans, but it’s a decent outing from an album that has greatly reached and surpassed many expectations. It’ll be interesting to see what Miguel’s next album will look like. How will he top Kaleidoscope Dream? Has he peaked?

I do have qualms with people calling both Kendrick and Miguel’s albums “classics” — they need to be a bit more time tested (both the albums AND the artists) before we start handing out superlatives such as those.

Coverage: Bilal Does Stevie, Jade Novah Does Ke$ha & Daniel de Bourg Does Miguel

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

Bilal is putting out new music! He’s released a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” as the first taste of his The Retrospection mixtape. I’ve always been a fan of Bilal — his quirky ear for music and singularly original talent is always welcome in such a crowded field of homogenous music stars. The mixtape drops on December 5th on his Facebook page apparently. In typical Bilal fashion, he makes this song his own — jazzes it up and smooths it out, with plenty of falsetto ad-libs to satiate your palette for good singing. Let me know what you think!

Jade Novah (@JadeNovah)is quickly making a mark, thanks to her cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. The well produced cover & video have over 9 MILLION VIEWS. Jade, no stranger to covers, has kept the momentum going. Her and her producer Mr. Devinaire have done it again with a pretty imaginative, original and yet true to the source cover of Ke$ha’s “Die Young”. Jade always manages to turn the songs I don’t like into songs I DO like — I love her version of “Call Me Maybe”! The quality and sheer music perfection that is her covers is pretty awesome though, and she doesn’t disappoint this go round either.

Related: Jade Novah’s cover of “Die In Your Arms” by Justin Bieber was also dope!

This is one sanging yt man. Seriously. I’ve been a fan of his covers ever since he did this bomb version of Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend”, and from time to time, I check in on Mr. Daniel de Bourg to see what he’s cooked up. Last week, he put out a cover of Miguel’s “Do You…”, which is one of the songs I really liked on his last album. Daniel doesn’t really do too much in the way of altering it, but he still sounds pretty dope singing it (which has never been a problem). It always trips me out to hear that voice come from that man, you know? Do you think he should have left this one alone?

Coverage: Up & Coming Singer Rudy Currence Covers Miguel’s R&B Hit “Adorn”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 6, 12

I’ve been a Rudy Currence fan for a while since his Digital Analog mixtape came across my ears awhile ago [cop the download here of that great project]. I know that at one time he was signed to Ludacris’ Disturbin’ The Peace label, but I’ve not heard much traction from that either. He’s on Twitter though at @Rudy_Currence, so make sure you hit him up and tell him where you saw his dope cover of Miguel’s “Adorn”.

Rudy has chops and I wish more singers like him were in the national spotlight…

Miguel’s “Adorn” quickly became a favorite of mine as well. The full version and video are here if you’ve yet to see them!

Will Miguel’s Career End Up Being A “Quickie”?

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 3, 11

Here we have a new single and video from Miguel for the song “Quickie” off of his debut album All I Want Is You. You probably remember him as the guy that got into a hair fight with Lloyd over whose crop circles were bigger – boop. Frankly, I think we let these artists get their “I’m so different” cards too quick, but I digress. This single sees him drifting away from his usual longings as he declares “that he don’t wanna be loved”. The video follows suit in black and white with several half-naked women roaming around. Cheers to you Miguel. You love women. We get it.

This song is just OK to me. His last two singles fit his vocals and the styling seemed to be right. This faux reggae-tinged sex romp of a track does about as much for me as eating a salad at lunch – empty, longing for my next meal while my stomach dines on itself (sorry work has been tough). I’ve heard good things about Miguel’s album, but this song makes me think that he may not be able to sustain the marginal success he’s had. So, what do we think?

Coverage: Miguel Does Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 28, 11

I do like Miguel’s album, it majorly grew on me. However, I don’t think his strength lies with his vocal ability. It’s in his penchant for catchy lyrics, interesting melodies, and choice of sounds and song titles.

So the fact that he is REALLY trying to sing this Britney Spears song is really cracking me up. And don’t think he ain’t trying — do you see all those veins bulging in his head? LOL he was REALLY going for it.

I’m not 100% sold on her version of the song, but I do like what he did with the arrangement. Made it sound fresher and easier to relate to. His beginning was a little sketchy and at times during the song, he remained sketchy, but overall, I can see where he was trying to take this and I like that. Billboard’s “Mashup Mondays” is always an interesting treat!

      Miguel’s Mic Stand > Miguel’s Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 11

Miguel performed his new single “Sure Thing” on Jay Leno this past night and while his performance was pitchy at times, and he looked a bit like Waymon/Ms. Peaches from “A Low Down Dirty Shame” with that haircut of his, it was all overshadowed by his neon microphone stand. YO, that joint is HOT! HAHAHA

However, I have got to admit that his album All I Want Is You really does get a lot more burn than I thought it would. Miguel live is…50/50 I’m thinking. He gives good energy during his performances though, and I get into them. I’m not sure I’d ever PAY to go see him perform live, but if he happened to be opening for someone else I loved, I wouldn’t run out in disgust either. I think he’s talented, slightly quirky, and has a penchant for his brand of heartfelt joints. So I like him. And his mic stand!

Miguel Is The Alt-R&B Hero Of The Week In “Sure Thing”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 7, 11

I have not quite made up my mind on Miguel yet. His album All I Want Is You is a mix-mash of an album — a little bit Prince, hints of Bootsy Collins, a dab of electronica, some lo-fi/fuzz, some radio sheen, and a touch of nasal falsetto to wrap it all up into an interesting package. He has some good songs for sure, and despite the ubiquity of “All I Want Is You” (which has been ran into the ground by radio), at the time that it dropped, it was a welcome addition to the soundscapes of urban radio. It was everything Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x” is not — this sudden infatuation with Euro-dance-house that R&B continues to have a dalliance with is so over for me.

“Sure Thing” as a visual starts off a bit perplexing as Miguel paints himself as some sort of superhero in my opinion. Maybe it’s the glasses, high collar, and leather jacket, but I felt like I was watching something…else. His dancing with the walls around him was cool because of the silhouette effect that was used, but other than that, the video alright. It fit fine with the song.

What confuses my spirit is this dude’s singing. He stays in his lane though and he seems to know his limits, but I slightly groaned when I saw the song was 3 minutes. Miguel somehow manages to make it work on his album and on his song, but I’m starting to think his voice is as polarizing as say, a Marsha Ambrosius. You either like it in droves or you don’t. My favorites from his album are “Quickie” and “Pay Me”, but there are a few that really are cool. I never did sit down to review his joint fully…

Miguel’s “All I Want Is You” Video Is A Futuristic Trip With Guest J. Cole

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 14, 10

I’ve been on this song tough for a while. Miguel has been around for a little bit building his buzz and was finally picked up by Jive. “All I Want Is You” is his first single that has been garnering more and more spins lately, and it features RocNation’s artist J. Cole.

I like this song, and listen to it quite often. The hip-hop-styled boom-bap of the beat mixed with the stark and dry vocals of Miguel’s really do it for me. However, take him out of the context of this style of song and I’m not sure how long I could ride with him. I’ve heard some of his other material, and I’m just not quite sure if I am a fan yet.

The video features what I’m assuming is a futuristic look at how losing a love many years from now can be satiated with a little bit of cloning. Peep the world outside the window which had flying cars (did you catch that?). The video’s look was cool, but in style and lighting — it was an icy-white, stark and cold peek into how in a world where technology reigns supreme, why wouldn’t you be able to clone or make robots out of your old love that has left you alone? Think about it! Crazy.
