    • John Legend’s “Wake Up Everybody” Ironically Makes Want To Do The Total Opposite

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 19, 10

This song really has YET to grow on me, honestly. I see what they are trying to do and what John Legend is trying to accomplish with his new album, but overall, this song feels a little flat and lacks the LIFE and undercurrent of passion and sincerity that the original “Wake Up Everybody” has.

The video also doesn’t help to change that perception either. It’s a very casual, carefree, and easy affair. The song was from a place of struggle and hard times. This feels like a fashion show and a street party. Good in theory, but not very true to the song I feel like. Everyone sounds great though, as usual! Including Ms. Melanie Fiona. And it’s good to hear Common rapping!

Wake Up!, John Legend’s next album, is due in September.

Coverage: Melanie Fiona Does Sam Cooke’s “Cupid”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 10, 10

Melanie Fiona has been blowing up worldwide and has been on tour with Alicia Keys lately, stops to take time to pay homage to Sam Cooke’s amazing voice and talent. She does a cover of “Cupid” and at the end she talks about why she chose to cover this particular song and what it means to her.

      Sounds great!

Melanie Fiona Throws A Rent Party In “Ay Yo”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 12, 10

I have always loved the vibe of this song, and pairing it with this treatment makes a lot of sense to me. Melanie Fiona’s bluesy vibe meets reggae beat meshes with her heritage on this song, and she rocks it well.

The video itself feels awkward at times — not sure why, but the part at the very end when there’s no dialogue but just empty air until she sings the hook out sums up that feeling completely. Other than that, from jump, I figured that what happened was what was going to happen.

Again, Melanie Fiona’s voice is one that you either like or don’t. I’m anxious to hear what her next album sounds like. The sophomore slump is either going to hit her hard or get sloughed off entirely by her. Time will reveal. The Bridge has definitely given her a great start however!

Some R&B Ladies Actually…Singing! Melanie Fiona & Keri Hilson Do “Covers”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 25, 10

Melanie Fiona, sick and stuck in her apartment, does a cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” — the same song Rihanna sung on the “Hope for Haiti” Telethon that aired this past Friday night on a lot of major channels.

While I love Melanie’s voice, I think this is a song that is simple and really doesn’t call for a lot of inflections and rearrangement, but her voice is definitely strong and she shines. While Rihanna is well, Rihanna, I think her version was a bit more true to the original. Clearly, ya’ll know who my vote goes for for Best Female Vocalist betwixt the two of them!

However, ole girl sounds like this when she is sick? LOLOL, clearly there is a disturbance in the Force my children!

There were moments in this acoustic version of “Knocks You Down” when Keri Hilson’s sexiness level increased slightly! Real talk. Keri’s not the worst singer at all, and this song acoustic is MUCH more palatable. And of course, the subtraction of Ne-Yo shoots the comfortability level of my eardrums up 100x fold.

There are some people who don’t like Keri particular, but this was a nice change of pace without all the ghetto/urban posturing, breathless dancing and stage pandering.

“It Kills Me” That Trey Thinks He “Invented Sex”; Trey Songz & Melanie Fiona Performances

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 13, 10

Trey Songz hit Mo’Nique to warble and wail “I Invented Sex”. It’s been announced that he’s going on tour with Jay-Z, so props to Jigga for pulling in the ladies for his tour. And probably some dudes that may have been there anyway cause who doesn’t love Jigga, but I got a feeling security is gonna be tight that night.

Melanie Fiona has had a big end of year and beginning of this year, so props to her! “It Kills Me” is still a great little tune, and the subtle changes I heard live made it pop just a bit more. Jimmy Kimmel had her on his show (BTW he is wrong for the cracks at Jay Leno!!). Why does one of her backup singers look like Tachina Arnold? LOL I was gonna say!

Something tells me that I think Melanie might secretly be tired of singing these songs HAHA. Her note choices during some of her runs were a little iffy though…still love her!

If I Woke Up To Melanie Fiona On A “Monday Morning” I’d Be Much Better Off

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 10, 09

Apparently “Monday Morning” was a #1 hit in Switzerland, and someone found a video for it. It hasn’t been released here in the States yet, but it’s probably a safe bet that if they did, it’d be reshot.

It’s a simple piece with shots of Melanie on subways, in her bed, etc. mouthing the words and looking beautiful.

I got to say, her album was a little bit underwhelming to me, but there is no doubt that her voice cannot be denied. If you haven’t heard it, you should be sure to check out our interview with her as well!

Looking good though, and congrats on the Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance on “It Kills Me”!

The Future “Stars” of Motown Toast The “Past” Stars In This Live Medley

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Nov 29, 09

During the Thanksgiving game of the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers, there was a live show during halftime that featured the “future” stars of Motown Records doing a medley of the “past” stars of Motown’s hits.

Well, I can say this with some certainty that the future is definitely not looking bright! LOL.

Save for Melanie Fiona and Kem placing further behind that, there wasn’t much to be impressed with. The Vita Chambers child really is just starting with a disservice to her name, because she’s nothing original. Forever The Sickest Kids, the ROCK band, sounded the best in my opinion. Melanie saved herself with that “Dancing In The Streets” performance, cause she hit the right notes all the way through!

But overall…especially with all the Motown that I’ve been listening to since MJ died…wowzers. No wonders folks having problem selling records, no one is really DYNAMIC and ENGAGING anymore if you ask me. The songs stand the test of time, but 9 times out of 10, the singers don’t.

Was anyone there? Did you see this live? Let me know. I’mma give this halftime show a 6 out of 10 LOL.

Melanie Fiona Takes Aim And Fires 2 Shots On Target With “Bang Bang”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 14, 09

Melanie Fiona is a fiesty firey musical siren in this clip for her latest single “Bang Bang”. I’m all for it too. One of the more uptempo and exciting joints on her debut album The Bridge, she’s all hair tossing/gun gesturing/limb flailing in this joint. It’s a sexy disaster at that too.

Melanie’s songs tend to run together on her album, but they seem to work really well outside of the context of The Bridge. This song is ready for TV and commercial licensing if you ask me.

The video gives a feel of them being outlaws, what with the lineup shots and all, and then tosses in some sexy shots of Melanie to wit. Not really any correlation, but hey, when all else fails…

If you aren’t yet convinced that you want to buy this album, check out some streams on imeem here. And her album has finally streeted in the US and is available on iTunes and in stores now. What do you think of this rowdy song and video?

Melanie Fiona Wants Your Loose Change In Her “Subway Series”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 15, 09

I love when artists do creative things to push their own careers. Email blasts, leaked mp3′s and co-signs can only get you so far. I LOVE that she took to the streets — literally — and is advocating good music and her awesome voice.

And can I just say that if I had been walking down the street and seen Melanie Fiona singing on a platform I would have LOST.MY.MIND!

Anyway, she takes to the city streets to recreate some of her songs live and with various forms of instrumentation. On “Sad Songs” she has a steel drum player, Please Don’t Go (Cry Baby) she has some buckets, and on “Bang Bang” she has beatboxing. How can you not love that?

Check it out, and if you haven’t read our interview yet, make sure you do. The Bridge is finally going to be available via digital download October 20th, BTW.

Music Video: Melanie Fiona – “It Kills Me”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 25, 09

I could have sworn there was a video for this song already, but I’m tripping. Melanie Fiona’s The Bridge is still yet to drop here in the States, but an enterprising person could find the international release if they tried.

The video for “It Kills Me” is all about Melanie Fiona. The drama she is giving in her face during performance clip is very appropriate and on-point too. The male lead from “CSI: Miami” and “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”, Adam Rodriguez, plays the love interest the song is about. The clip has a impactful ending. I like this video more than “Give It To Me Right” because it’s more about the feel/atmosphere of the song than it is about looking the beautiful Ms. Fiona. Not that there is anything wrong with that — she STILL looks great.
