    • The Chicken Did Not Cross The Road For This Commercial, Mary J. Blige.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 2, 12

      Mary J. Blige.

      This is so wrong.

      This is TERRIBLE.

Jesus Cray Christ, this is bad.

You know, if you wanted to sell more records just…get caught coming out of a club looking a hot mess like all the other stars do these days. I’d rather listen to Jennifer Hudson talk about birds in the sky and feeling good than this warbled monstrosity about chicken wraps and flour tortillas.

      Lady, please!!

      Happy Monday y’all.

Update: The commercial was pulled, but according to Burger King, it was pulled for “licensing issues”. Right. That ish was just BAD. But ok, I’m going to let Burger King cook LOL.

New Music: Mary J. Blige Needs More Time In Her Day, “25/8″ To Be Exact & JoJo Can’t Avoid “Disaster”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 30, 11

The Queen of Hip-Hop/R&B Soul Mary J. Blige is releasing her 10th album (yeah, TEN albums of MJB!) in October titled My Life II: The Journey Continues. I’m sure it’s sure to be full of moments of Mary trying to recreate the past all while keeping her foot firmly in the present and future. These days, I’m more excited to see how Mary will transform with a new album, because she ALWAYS gets an image makeover for each new album LOL. True story.

Anyway, the song is a lament to obviously not having enough time — to love someone — or to take care of Kendu, who knows. Mary’s voice immediately sounds a little rough around the edges (more than usual at least), and the theme of the song (“24/7 ain’t enough”) isn’t really enough of an anchor to keep this joint from going in one ear and out of the other. She’s already dropped the tepid “Someone To Love Me (Naked)” single (which was based off a Diddy-Dirty Money song at that!) to lukewarm reception, so I’m going to need Mary to REALLY be bringing it on this new album of hers. Her last one doesn’t get much rotation from me, and I hope she continues to mine the rich musical history that could be so much easy music fodder for her these days.

JoJo has ALWAYS been a force to be reckoned with vocally if you ask me, and I am glad to see that she is finally getting her comeuppance these days. She’s dropped the first official single from her new album Jumping Trains, which doesn’t have a release date yet, but many people are looking forward to. After countless false starts with label drama, mixtapes, and tweets about positivity and thanking fans for the support, we finally get the cut “Disaster”.

“Disaster” starts off as a deceptively guitar-laced ballad in the first few seconds, but segues to a bit of a foot tapper very shortly after. JoJo’s voice rings clear, and the hook is a pop-rock laced heater that is sure to get her some airplay. I hope JoJo doesn’t lose her natural knack for R&B — she’s always done it better than other folks like Xtina and P!nk if you ask me. JoJo’s voice has always sounded honest and not forced to me, and “Disaster” continues that tradition. I’m interested in seeing what kind of traction she gets with this joint. It’s definitely a good intro to her updated, grown, sexy, and matured sound. Thoughts? Fans?

Mary J. Blige is “Living Proof” That Ballads Aren’t All They’re Cracked Up To Be

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 17, 11

Full Disclosure: Sometimes I really hate ballads. Particularly, I hate weepy, cheesy, melodramatic, we-been-thru-hard-times-naw-der-sho-gon-be-some-good-times, type of ballad. Mary J. Blige‘s single “The Living Proof” from the film The Help fits into that category.

The video is your standard for this type of song, woman sings along with a piano while clips of the film are transposed in the video. As far as the song goes I have to come at Ms. Blige on this — please note, that I am a fan before you leave hateful comments — I know how the stans feel about the Queen. We all know that Mary has always been limited vocally, although she has improved over the years. Where she has always won us over is the performance, the drama, the sheer crazy. That’s why songs in the same medium such as “I Can See In Color” from Precious worked so well where this does not.

When Mary gives you raw emotion, you feel it. However, this new song is designed for a subdued approach that only those with high vocal dexterity can make work, though I am not sure if any of these vocalists still exist and the ones who do are past their prime. If we have ever learned anything about Mary, subtlety is not her strong point. She has never been subtle with her wails and cracks nor her two-step, so why start now?

Mary J. Blige Comes Back With Her “Someone To Love Me (Naked)” Flip

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 4, 11

Mary J. Blige takes Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Someone To Love Me” and flips it, re-singing the hook and adding her own verses, and also adds a new verse from Lil’ Wayne. Diddy just keeps his same terrible verse….fail. Wayne actually kind of went off on this verse of his, I liked it. I wish Diddy would have gone in and written a better verse since you’d think he wouldn’t want to look so terrible sharing a song with Lil’ Wayne. Clearly not.

Mary bops around as only Mary can throughout the video with some “fashion” and a new ponytail to boot. Mary looks great though, and I’m interested in hearing what new music she is about to deliver to the people. Her new album My Life II: The Journey Continues will be out September this year!

That big old eye looking through the mirror was kind of strange though!

I Missed The MTV VMA’s, But Here’s The Performances!

Mary J. Blige Will Play Nina Simone In Biopic “Nina”

Written by The IPS in Movies on May 13, 10

Mary J. Blige has signed up for another film role, and I personally feel it may be the one she was born to play. Just like Jamie Foxx excelled as Ray Charles in “Ray” — I think “Nina” could be Mary’s breakout role and could cement her as a multi-hyphenate if they can pull it off right.

Nina Simone was an acclaimed composer, pianist, singer, songwriter, activist, and more. She passed about 5 years ago, but her legacy lives on:

R&B songstress Mary J. Blige will tune up her jazz vocals after signing to star in Cynthia Mort’s “Nina,” a movie about legendary singer Nina Simone.

Mort’s script focuses on Simone’s relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo, backers said. (Source)

I’m hopeful for this! Visually, Mary can pass as a Nina Simone look-alike and while the jazz/piano chops may be hard to imitate, she could probably learn (close approximations of) them. This is a role that Mary MAY be able to pull off. I’m willing to give her a chance.

She may not be the perfect person — if not, who would you all suggest? Throw some ideas out.

Mary J. Blige I Can Believe, But There’s Nothing “Hood” About Trey Songz

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 7, 10

Luckily, Trey Songz‘ cameo/duet part seems fleeting in this otherwise pretty standard but efficient Chris Robinson directed video. “Hood Love” is taken from Mary J. Blige’s latest album Stronger With Each Tear, which I must say, I really almost forgot about! This MJB album is not get the usual burn that Mary albums get from me.

There’s nothing super exciting about this video — it’s a pretty literal translation from the song to the video. Fighting, missing thug-types who come home really late and stress their women out. Arguing, police, but no ambalamps.

Mary looks fashionable, Trey looks faux-street, and video is over. What ya’ll think?

Thanks Idol, For Giving Us Back These “Unthinkable” Performances!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 23, 10

Cause I would have never thought that the show could be so BORING this season!

Alicia Keys made an appearance on the yearly “Idol Gives Back” show, which reportedly raised $45 million this year. She did “Unthinkable”, which is the best and only song I listen to on her last album. She also did “Empire State of Mind Pt. 2″. The first song in the beginning was a bit unBEARable, but she cleaned it up as time passed. “Empire” was decent as well, until that last note.

I know some of them Idol contestants were thinking “Really? If that was us, America would send us home!” We know ya’ll, we know…

Hit the jump for performances from Mary J. Blige & Joss Stone!

New Music: Kelly Rowland, Janet Jackson, Drake & Mary J. Blige

Kelly Rowland – “Smooches” [Listen + Download]

Kelly’s leaked a song called “Smooches” that is not slated to be on her upcoming album, which as of now has no release date or title. It was produced by producer Bangladesh, and sports a more urban sound for Kelly. The new album will also feature production from David Guetta, Rico Love and more. Buzz single yes, but Bangladesh is never going to be able to prevent people from comparing this to “Diva” or “Video Phone” just because of who it is.

But didn’t Teyana Taylor also record this song? Hmm…the newly signed Universal Motown artist is hoping her next album shows her sexy, confident side.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Janet Jackson – “Nothing” [Listen + Download]

A little bit on the boring side and sporting a more reserved Janet sound, after “Make Me” however, I guess we should have expected something slower from Janet on a new song, this being taken from the “Why Did I Get Married Too?” soundtrack. A video is reportedly in the works as well. Produced by J.D. and Bryan-Michael Cox, the song premiered on Atlanta station V103 this past week. It fits well into the J. Jackson canon musically, I must admit. The movie comes out April 2nd.

      More after the jump!

Mary J. Blige Goes Worldwide With “Each Tear”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 4, 10

Mary J. Blige is going international with her latest album, and as such, she’s done an Italian version of “Each Tear” with Italian star Tiziano Ferro. She’s also doing 4 other versions — one with Australian artist Vanessa Amorosi, UK & Cash Money artist Jay Sean, another singer named Rea Garvey and Somalian-Canadian artist K’Naan.

She’s also doing a bunch of additions and subtractions on her International releases, as usual, that will have new songs and other goodies.

The “Each Tear” video from Italy is basically a black & white affair that features the two duetting and other “encouraging” imagery. Nothing really to write home about, and definitely not such a stylized affair as her other videos up to this point. Will we get a US version?

Mary’s getting classier and cementing her legendary status worldwide…
