    • Covers: Kelly Rowland Covers Vibe, With Barely Any Covering, Channeling The Spirit of Donna Summer

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 26, 11

My baby Kelly Rowland (yeah I said it, and!?) overs the August/September issue of VIBE, looking like The Ghost of Donna Summer reincarnated. SERIOUSLY. She does! Look!

In any case, she talks about some interesting things according to some quotes released by VIBE, including her feelings on one Mr. Mathew Knowles:

When you walked away from that last meeting with Mathew, did you feel an “exhale” moment?
I did, but I also felt like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?!’ I stayed in the house for two days. I was sad. It was like a funeral. I had to deaden that situation in order to start fresh. That’s a very long time to have the same manager and the same label.

What about your personal relationship with Mathew Knowles. Do you still talk to him?
Mathew sent me flowers for my birthday!

But do you talk to him?
It’s… I respect him above anything. (Source)

She sounds like a Republican dodging questions on taxation of the rich. I see you Kelly!

In any case, word around the internet critics bench is that her album Here I Am, which finally hit this week off the strength of the success of the single “Motivation” is just another hatchet job by a label which can’t quite seem to handle Kelly Rowland. I’ve yet to listen but be expecting a review soon. If you have the album, what do you think of it now that it’s finally out? Share your thoughts with the rest of the class!

Mashonda Never Got Magazine Covers For Her Actual Music Though…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 14, 10

Read the Vibe article here if you want

My whole take on this Mashonda/Swizz Beatz/Alicia Keys thing…meh.

However, I thought about it today and I realized Mashonda is getting covers for this whole business…she never got them for her music!

I remember she had that one Swizz Beatz produced song “Blackout” that had two versions — one with Snoop (see below video) and one with Nas. I liked the Nas one better, but the song was pretty terrible. Mashonda’s vocals were like, thin as rice paper and 2000 Kelis-esque. I remember thinking then, “the only reason she got signed is cause her husband is Swizz Beatz.”

I always cracked up because Swizz Beatz was speaking in them church tongues — “SHONDA! She’s a problem!” You got to be a church kid to get that.

LOL but tell me that this song isn’t laughable. The beat is kinda hot, but yeah…

Anyway, all that to say, I feel sorry for her. Alicia Keys is scandalous, and so is Swizz Beatz. I’m sure we will never know the whole story, but of course Alicia is going to catch the brunt of it because of who she is and the songs she’s sung about. Torrid and unfortunate for the children basically. That’s all I’mma say.

Covers: Sade Must Have Given Herself The “Kiss of Life”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 2, 10

      Flawless victory.

Someone page Rihanna and tell her this is how you do it! Longevity! Quality vs. Quantity. I could go on and on.

Sade’s latest album Soldier of Love is still sitting pretty on the charts for the 2nd week in a row I believe, and has already been certified gold with sales of over 500K. Ole girl is 51!

I am still on Soldier of Love tough but I got to admit, I CANNOT listen to it while I am studying. I immediately fall asleep LOL.

      Chris Brown’s On His 3rd Album And…It’s Deep Ya’ll

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 3, 09

Chris Brown has released a teaser trailer for his new album Graffiti which drops legally next Tuesday. It has already leaked unfortunately and I think the general consensus is that people seem to like it well enough. I myself will share what I think next week!

However, this trailer? Unnecessary LOL. I mean, sure, he’s been through a lot this year. I just think this this reeks of hubris.

Also below, check out the cover shot of Chris from the newly relaunched VIBE — which is also unnecessary if you ask me, too. Drake is on the other cover, also below.

      Covers: Whitney Does Ebony Magazine

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 31, 09

      Whitney Ebony Cover

America’s latest comeback kid Whitney Houston covers Ebony magazine in promo for her new album which drops TODAY by the way. I’m going to try and crank out a review of that for you all as well as Ledisi and some other joints.

Whitney looks airbrushed within an inch of her “The Preacher’s Wife” days, and I think they made her look like Bobbi Kristina more than anything, but no denying it, she’s back and she looks good.

I’m not mad at that outfit — is that a one-piece with a belt? ROFL get it Nippy!

I’m a little wary of them milking her “story” though — I mean, it’s obviously a selling point, but still…I’m not too sure how I feel about her “sharing” but NOT REALLY sharing. I just don’t want any vague references and tap-dancing around it. Just be about it! Go hard or go home Whitney!

Cop your October issue when it hits newsstands. I’m sure the photos will rival Michael Jackson’s latest 2007 covershoot.

Magazine Covers: Kid Cudi x Keri Hilson Cover Complex

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 4, 09

Kid Cudi and Keri Hilson both cover Complex’s latest issue soon to hit stands.

      Spotted these at RapRadar.

Keri looks great as usual, but another interview about her I think is almost about as interesting as reading about R. Kelly’s sex trial. I need her to hit it and bring something new already! The cycle for this album should be over in my opinion.

Kid Cudi, who hasn’t even released an album yet, is getting covers, booking TV shows…I know “Day ‘N Nite” was a relative hit, but I remember when you really had to do SOMETHING in order to get acclaim and what not. I feel like they give out covers to just anyone who is getting put on lately, or some other reason that isn’t really enough to be getting “all that”.

Music is so secondary these days.

Lisa Turtle, Still The Token Black Girl. Poor Thang…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 30, 09

I don’t know if anyone watches Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but he’s been on this kick to reunite the cast of Saved by the Bell.

That’s all and good, but I just want to know what Lifetime Movie Network secretarial pool they dragged Lark Voorhies out of! LISA TURTLE FOR THE WIN!

I mean, I don’t think I care about the other ones, though they have all aged pretty well. LOL. Even Mr. Belding has said he’d be down. You know Screech ain’t about to get in on that though! Drama!

VIBE Is Gone…But Foolery Still Lives On

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 1, 09

I’m sure everyone has heard by now that VIBE is now out of the print business. Kaput.

And I hate to speak ill of the dead, but if this is how they went out…

I mean…really!? This cover sums up the music industry and why I am done with it. And even why the print industry that reports on the music industry is almost irrelevant.

I stopped reading VIBE really when the Vibe Confidential column started reporting months-old news and when the “new artists” that they spotlighted sometimes never came out…I could go on.

I hope something more relevant, limber, fast-moving and NOT “mag-goes-blog” comes up in its place. We will see. I am sad to see more people lose their jobs…craziness.

But…Christina Milian and The-Dream!? Ugh please send one of the Three Bears and Goldilocks back into the forest, cause we don’t want any!

RapRadar, owned by Danyel Smith’s husband (noew former Editor in Chief of VIBE), had the exclusive.
