  • Coverage: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Have The “Inner City Blues”, Too.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 27, 12

Yooooo, I’ve been a fan of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour for a while. The Danish group is soulful, funky, and I’ve enjoyed their album Fruit for a couple of months now. Despite the fact that it’s been out for a couple of years, LOL.

SOMEHOW I missed this cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” though. For whatever reason now, I can’t stop spinning it. I grabbed a video of a live performance they did in France of this song, and it goes just as hard as their recorded version.

It’s amazing how soul and it’s messages travel and translate across the world. I think this cover does the original justice. Who knew that Danes even had “inner cities”? And why are ALL the international groups these days doing “soul music” better than the country that originated it? Something to think about…

Brandy & Monica Take To The Stage To Perform Their First Duet In 14 Years

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 17, 12

This debate will never end, sorry!

While I am glad to see Brandy back behind a microphone, this song really just does nothing for me. I won’t call it terrible, because there’s a lot worse out on the radio right now. But I am not moved by the song at all.

However, the mellifluousness of Brandy’s voice…get into that.

This song is SO low, in terms of the musical key that it is in. And honestly, I feel like it starts that low in order to allow Monica to keep up with Brandy. LOL. Call it what you want. Monica sounds decent enough, but Brandy really shines on this song. Her voice is smoother and has aged well thus far, and I hope it stays classic like the greats. With Whitney gone, we need them! I’ve never been a huge Monica fan but I’m also glad to see her stepping it up, cause I feel like SHE feels like she has to keep up with Brandy in a way. If you ask her that in an interview, I don’t think she’d admit to it LOL.

Has anyone copped the digital download? What do y’all think of this joint? Am I off base? Share your thoughts with the class!

Betty Wright Schools You On “The Game” & Proves Why She’s Still Valid With Latest Release

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 10, 12

Please get into Betty Wright turning out this performance of “In The Middle Of The Game (Don’t Change The Play)” on Jools Holland with his orchestra across the pond. Voice in full effect, working the stage, the guests, the audience, the maestro, and all the while knowing that a) she wrote the song and b) that that is how it should really be done.

If you haven’t picked up Betty Wright’s newest album Betty Wright: The Movie, which features her alongside the crackpot team of The Roots, Betty Wright spins a soulful, cautionary, and motherly role as a Soul Advisor and Musical Ingenue reborn. Her songs are poignant yet matronly; soulful yet painful at times; and even funky and current with guests sprinkled in like Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Wayne.

Late Pass: Jill Scott Delivers A Stunning Performance Of “Hear My Call” On BET’s “Sunday Best”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 17, 11

Jill Scott took the stage of BET’s “Sunday Best” a couple of weeks ago and absolutely wrecked shop.

I’m not really invested in this season too much, but the fact that Jill Scott went onto this show and absolutely out-sung, out-emoted, and out-performed the judges, contestants, hosts, and everyone else in the vicinity of the recording stage just makes me think about why I am even watching that show!

There are truly no words that I could say that do this performance justice. Just watch it. Jill did that. With her whole heart, mind, body, and soul.

I will admit to not really getting into her new album at all, but I’m going to give it another spin today. That’s what a great performance will make you do! And THAT’S how it should be. “Hear My Call” is taken from her latest album The Light Of The Sun. Now that is has been out for a minute, has your initial opinion of the album been swayed?

Jason Derülo Does Day-O At The Teen Choice Awards

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 9, 11

Jason Derülo is one of those artists that you are slightly aware of but try to stay away from in your everyday music listening because it just feels tawdry and wrong to maybe like any of his songs. I’ve actually found myself playing some of his singles often though, due to their sheer catchiness. It’s a gift and a curse for an artist like him, who seems very capable as both a performer and songwriter, but not the strongest in vocal department. The beds of a lot of his hits have been wholly based on a sample or interpolation of another song, and his new single “Don’t Wanna Go Home” continues that string, sampling both Robin S‘ “Show Me Love” and using the well known “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)”, made popular by Harry Belafonte.

This song draws you in because of the familiar 90′s dance hit by Robin S. The first time I heard it, I immediately got crunk because I love that song, only to be bamboozled by Jason’s voice very shortly after. Womp.

Jason however brings his usual bombast to this performance, though there seems to be some sync issues with the band and the backing tracks, but you’d never know from Jason’s performance. If there was issues, he kept the show going. He does the best singing he can do with all the movement that he’s doing (though that opening was a tad bit iffy IMO). He definitely performs hard and has all the moves, so why isn’t he atop the charts? Do people not vibe with him? Are you not feeling this new single? Weigh in.

“Karma” Comes Back Around, This Time Via Joss Stone

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 12, 11

After I just posted up a teaser of Joss Stone’s upcoming album, we get a preview of a new song from Joss’s performance on Jay Leno. She has a new album and clearly she’s making the rounds. LP1 comes out July 26th, and Joss brings along heavyweight Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics to join her — and he also executive produced this latest record.

The pre-hook of this song packs all the bite, but the rest of the song vocally left a bit to be desired for me. However, once the band got into it and Dave Stewart started shredding, it got a little bit more interesting. Interesting enough to make me still semi-interested in what her album will sound like.

The “One And Only” Adele Shines At The iTunes Festival

Written by Donovan in Videos on Jul 11, 11

That cot damn Adele is to good at what she does; singing the majesty out of any song she dares try. Don’t believe me? Check out the live performance of one of my favorite tracks from her album “One and Only” performed at the iTunes Festival in London. Adele uses her grand voice to deliver a beautiful, stripped-down version of the song that proves why she is currently dominating the charts across the world.

It is nice to see someone who is truly talented succeed in a fickle, image-driven industry without any fuss around her personal life or changing of her appearance. In this video, you can see how down to earth Adele is; asking the audience to participate with her and even admitting to forgetting the lyrics, starting over and giving a great performance. This makes me love her even more and I’m sure it will win her a few more fans. If you haven’t checked out 21 or 19 please do so!

Alice Russell Is Still Funky During A “Breakdown”

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jul 1, 11

Ugh, Alice Russell is so filthy with it! Her band is sick too! I spotted this video over at SoulBounce and you may remember hearing about Russell here quite a while ago. In this video, we have the pleasure of getting front row seats to a live performance of the song “Breakdown” which is rumored to be on her upcoming LP.

The IPS and I share a love for yt soul, especially when it comes from powerful belters such as Alice Russell. This song is no different as it combines the powers of British soul with the funky tremble of a church organ lifted by Russell’s emotive vocals. A sheer winner! I for one can’t wait for a new album. Pot of Gold is still in rotation over here.

Sidenote: Please get to the 2 minute mark where she absolutely takes it to churh! That’s real soul right there!

Alica Keys Tries To Give Us “Butterflyz” – Again

Written by Donovan in Blogs on Jun 29, 11

Alicia Keys has been out heavily pubbing the 10th anniversary re-release of her debut Songs In A Minor and performed one of my personal favorites from the album, “Butterflyz” live on Good Morning America. Though Keys has trouble with shifting registers – as per usual – she turned out a respectable job of this deeply personal song she penned when she was 14. She also performed “Fallin’” and “Empire State of Mind”.

Let me warn you that there is practically no reason to buy this collector’s edition unless you stan hard for Mrs. Beatz. The additional songs including the songs from the vault such as “Typewriter” are mostly tepid affairs that were originally left on the cutting room floor for a reason (if you don’t believe me, check her BET performance for evidence). However, it is hard to ignore the fact this album reflected a generation of young people who were forgetting about the power of R&B and how it can profoundly change ones life. Here’s one to R&B!

Jill Scott, We Are “So In Love”…With You In That Red Dress!

Written by Donovan in Blogs on Jun 20, 11

LAWD HAVE MERCY! Jill Scott is looking right, lookin’ good and sangin’ better!

I still don’t like this song as much as I want to given that Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton are two of my favorite artists ever. Comparatively, Hamilton’s duet with Angie Stone “Stay For A While” is much better. However, they sound good live and this is a perfect song for that summer barbecue with your family. I am so excited for The Light of the Sun to be released tomorrow, June 21. Jill has never let me down so I imagine this will still be a great album overall.

As for this live performance, they kept it simple. No bells and whistles. The chorus sounds a lot less monotonous live, thankfully. That leaves the two to go and do their good sangin’! Sidenote: I need a new Anthony Hamilton album in my life because that last one was not the business!
