    • Live Performances: Gregory Porter Sings “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” On A Subway. Enough Said.

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 15, 13

Gregory Porter is one of my favorite voices these days, and his song “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” is such an amazing treat, but mostly, because of his voice. Mr. Porter’s voice is simultaneously commanding and relaxing. He sings with the ease of a jazz vocalist, but his voice has the gravitas of any of the great soul singers.

He’s recently signed with major label Blue Note Records for his 3rd album, and I’m looking forward to more of his music.

Also check out his song “1960 What?” if you like what you hear above!

Live Performances: Is Solange “Losing You” With Her Latest EP? Check This Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 12

If you haven’t had the chance to listen to Solange’s newest EP True, you should check it out. Solange has a penchant for tapping into a particular emotional vein and working it well, especially with the some of the material from True. I’ve honestly grown to love the whole project in its entirety.

Solange takes her writing to another level, exploring some honest and raw feelings and emotions about breakups, love, relationships and more. “Losing You” wasn’t initially my favorite song (that would be “Sleep In The Park”), but the more I listened to the lyrics, the more it stuck with me. This performance of that song is also plaintive and heartfelt, and honest.

You could label Solange different, or bohemian, or retro, but instead, I’ll just label her by saying I like it. A lot. Vocally, she stays in her limited range and lane, but it works for her.

What do you think of this performance?

Live Performances: Tamar Braxton Fights The Good Fight With This “Love & War” Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 7, 12

Not entirely sure if this is live or a pre-recorded show vocal, but in any case, Tamar’s voice is stunning. And if it WAS live — Jesus. She was sitting down. That’s crazy!

I posted up “Love And War” earlier this week but this “live” clip made me feel the song just a bit more. Tamar is really launching as a solo artist after all of the documented stress and strife with her husband, producers, etc. “Love And War” is a great introduction in any case, and if she is going to give performances like this, the only way left is up. Did y’all see big sister Toni in the audience? I wonder if she’s secretly a bit mad that she doesn’t have such a blockbuster song to come out with.”I Heart You” was cool, but it definitely wasn’t lighting up fires like “Love And War” will for Tamar. To be honest though, I feel a lot of Tamar’s hype is a bit false, simply because she’s had 2 different reality shows and plenty of buildup to even make this moment happen…

      Thoughts?

Live Performances: Brandy Killed “Wildest Dreams” On Black Girls Rock ’12, Did You See It?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

I haven’t heard a vocal performance like this that I’ve loved in a quite awhile. Brandy’s performance of “Wildest Dreams” from this year’s “Black Girls Rock” that aired on BET a few weeks ago was stellar. Why? There were so many small vocal flourishes that were well placed. The control she has over her voice. The timing. The quality of her tone live. Brandy kills so much on this performance — so much so that when I hear this song on the album now, all I ever hear is the live version above.

If you’re a singer, I think you’ll understand this post a bit more. The background vocals were a little touch and go at times, but come on — compared to some of the other performances on that very same show (*coughs Alicia Keys*), Brandy is leaps and bounds above her peers.

This video stays on repeat, and boo to BET for always making me watch a full minute of ads before I can hear this song!

Big Boi & Little Dragon Remind Us Listen To What Your “Mama” Tells You

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 9, 12

Two of my favorite artists have clashed for Big Boi’s new album — Big Boi of course, and Little Dragon. They collaborated on a new song that will appear on Big Boi’s sophomore album Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, which is apparently slated for delivery to the masses on November 13th.

This song — I like it. Do I love it? No. However, I think the live treatment + it being the first time I have heard it may have stolen some of the “oomph” of the song upon impact. Big Boi stays being an engaging rapper, but I feel like his first solo joint wasn’t commercially received like we all expected — not sure about the critics. Fan of Outkast may jibe with this song however, and Little Dragon bring a nice downtempo, understated funk to Big Boi’s slight hint of Southern drawl.

I think I will hold out final comments until I actually hear the recorded version. Big Boi’s other singles (street or whatever) have all been pretty interesting LOL. “Gossip” and ESPECIALLY “She Said OK”. Big Boi is a ham.

Sidenote: I went to the vitaminwater #Uncapped event here in Portland that featured Kendrick Lamar & Best Coast. ‘Twas dope!

Classic Flashback + Coverage: Dionne Warwick Sings Stevie Wonder’s “All In Love Is Fair”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 12, 12

This clip is a master class of interpretation, vocalization, talent, grace and skill.

If you follow me on Twitter or any other medium, you’ve seen my latest musical delve into a classic catalogue with the discovery of the depth and skill of Dionne Warwick back in her heyday.

She’s come to be known as the older crotchety woman was apt to call people “hussy” on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice”, and even as a punchline on YouTube parody show “Got 2B Real”, but back in the late 70′s, Dionne Warwick served as the muse for iconic songwriters Burt Bacharach & Hal David, and was an consumate song stylist and interpreter of their captivating lyrics and catalog. In addition to that pair, she also worked with such legends as Isaac Hayes, The Bee Gees, Luther Vandross, and even Barry Manilow.

If you watch this performance, I guarantee you will get goosebumps. You can even see where Whitney Houston gets her influences from a lot throughout this (and other) Dionne Warwick performances. “All In Love Is Fair” is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs, but Dionne’s version live in this clip absolutely brings me to my knees.

Give credit to what’s she did even if you aren’t familiar now with who she is. Other favorites of mine that Dionne sings are also “Alfie”, “You’re Gonna Need Me”, “After You”, “Deja Vu” and more.

Leave some thoughts if you have them!

Live Performances: Kimbra Further Entrenches Herself “Into My Head” With This KCRW Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 12

I’ve been loving Kimbra’s “Call Me” since I posted it a while back and since the album came out in the States. I gleaned her international release Vows when it came out previously as well. I’d heard “Come Into My Head” was pleasantly surprised at some of the musical changes and just the amazingness of Kimbra’s talent as well.

So when the US album came out, it was definitely one of the first songs that I spun aside from “Call Me”. Kimbra took to KCRW’s popular show “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and did a riveting performance of this song. I mean, Kimbra is SO great to me. She sings this song with so much fervor and passion. She plays tambourine. She interacts with the band. The changes! The chords! The musicians! Everything about this performance just made me a bigger fan.

If you haven’t checked out Vows, please do Kimbra’s brand of international soul/pop is way more musical and interesting than most stuff that Americans are putting out. I guarantee it.

And any chick that plays tambourine is A-OK in my books.

More Coverage: Usher Rocks His “Pumped Up Kicks” In The UK

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 12

      More COVERAGE for you today!

Usher took the BBC Radio 1 airwaves to rock out and show off his guitar skills to the world with his cover of Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”. I didn’t know Usher could play the bass, but one would hope after such a long lengthy career being around all these amazing musicians that he’d pick up another instrument outside of his golden chops.

I still laugh at this song because it’s a very morbid song, and Usher is lowkey taking it to church. But you know, a hot pop song is a hot pop song. And Usher wants to prove that he is on top of things in the world — have you heard his latest album Looking 4 Myself yet? Point proven LOL!

What y’all think of Usher rocking out with his fauxhawk out?

Coverage: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Have The “Inner City Blues”, Too.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 27, 12

Yooooo, I’ve been a fan of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour for a while. The Danish group is soulful, funky, and I’ve enjoyed their album Fruit for a couple of months now. Despite the fact that it’s been out for a couple of years, LOL.

SOMEHOW I missed this cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” though. For whatever reason now, I can’t stop spinning it. I grabbed a video of a live performance they did in France of this song, and it goes just as hard as their recorded version.

It’s amazing how soul and it’s messages travel and translate across the world. I think this cover does the original justice. Who knew that Danes even had “inner cities”? And why are ALL the international groups these days doing “soul music” better than the country that originated it? Something to think about…

Brandy & Monica Take To The Stage To Perform Their First Duet In 14 Years

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 17, 12

This debate will never end, sorry!

While I am glad to see Brandy back behind a microphone, this song really just does nothing for me. I won’t call it terrible, because there’s a lot worse out on the radio right now. But I am not moved by the song at all.

However, the mellifluousness of Brandy’s voice…get into that.

This song is SO low, in terms of the musical key that it is in. And honestly, I feel like it starts that low in order to allow Monica to keep up with Brandy. LOL. Call it what you want. Monica sounds decent enough, but Brandy really shines on this song. Her voice is smoother and has aged well thus far, and I hope it stays classic like the greats. With Whitney gone, we need them! I’ve never been a huge Monica fan but I’m also glad to see her stepping it up, cause I feel like SHE feels like she has to keep up with Brandy in a way. If you ask her that in an interview, I don’t think she’d admit to it LOL.

Has anyone copped the digital download? What do y’all think of this joint? Am I off base? Share your thoughts with the class!
