    • The Incomparable Ledisi Pays Tribute To Gospel Legend Bishop Walter Hawkins Like Only She Can With “Be Grateful”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 22, 10

For those who aren’t familiar, Bishop Walter Hawkins passed recently, and he was a prolific and legendary Gospel artist and songwriter. He opened a lot of doors and set a lot of standards in terms of how Black church and choral music are written and produced in my opinion. His passing was a great loss to the Gospel music community at large. The tribute service was held yesterday (7/20) in Oakland, and will be airing on Sunday on the GMC (Gospel Music Channel). Many luminaries and Gospel “stars” were in the house to pay tribute to this great man, and I look forward to watching it on Sunday night.

However, someone got a video of blog favorite Ledisi singing one of his signature songs “Be Grateful”, and when I tell you, for someone who isn’t a strictly “Gospel” singer, she absolutely did her BEST singing on this song! She just to’ this up and sent it up to Heaven. Walter is playing this video on his iPad. I promise!

That’s a TRIBUTE. That’s what I expect! Not what Chris Brown did at the BET Awards. THIS.

And I love Ledisi and ya’ll know she can almost do no wrong in my book.

      RIP Walter Hawkins!

Reflecting On Past Dreams That Are Now Reality — Ledisi’s “Higher Than This” Video Out

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 20, 10

WOW, I didn’t hear anything about this video dropping but alas, a short Google search and tweet from @ledisi later, I found it. And it only had 27 views! So, let’s get that number up!

What I get from this video for Ledisi’s excellent song “Higher Than This” is that she’s grateful for the past and realizing where she came from to being excited and happy with the present. The young girl sneaks in the club, gets on stage and gives it her all, imagining a packed house. FFWD to the future where Ledisi, now older and living that dream, is surrounded on the walls of the venue by pictures and snapshots of past greats and stars that she probably once looked up to, and is reveling in that moment as people are now enjoying her God given talent for themselves.

The lyrics are deep in this song, please listen to them and get into them! I love the little girl in this video too.

Grammy-nominated artist Ledisi’s album Turn Me Loose is in stores now! If you don’t have it, you slacking on one of the best soul releases in the past couple of years, I promise you….

Finding Hidden Gems: “Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue” By Ledisi

Ledisi – “Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue”
      Track 7, 2002 release

This single was released in 2002′s on Ledisi’s sophomore independent album Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue.

I got a hold of this a while back before I really REALLY discovered who Ledisi was and who she has become since her early career. She has had fans that have been following since her early days in New Orleans and Oakland.

On this particular cut, which was an almost instant favorite and classic of mine, Ledisi lets looks with an extended jam and scat mix, effortlessly displaying her vocal acrobatics, range, depth of voice and talent in droves on this almost 8 minute long song. If you’ve truly never heard it, please listen.

The Feedback Sits With The Incomparable Ledisi For An Interview

Written by The IPS in Interviews on Jan 5, 10

      The IPS & Ledisi

Let me tell you, my year ended RIGHT!

If you are a reader of this blog, you know I am the biggest fan of Ledisi. Well it was my pleasure and honor to sit down and have an interview with her after checking out her show up in Seattle, WA on December 18, 2009 at the Jazz Alley. She’d been doing 2 shows a night for the past 4 days and was tired, but she gave me the time of day and was so gracious about it.

Ledisi is a force to be reckoned with and we had a long chat about her music, her upbringing (and not in the church as you might expect), the independent vs. major label business, her Grammy nominations and more! She also sung Happy Birthday to me as well (*fainted*). If you don’t know, consider yourself informed — Ledisi is an artist to watch. Even after all that singing, she STILL sounded amazing and gave the crowd MORE than what they wanted and expected.

If you haven’t seen her live — GO. NOW! She gives 200% and just pours out of herself. And as she says, it’s “church in a jook joint!” There were a couple of times where I went in and had church and had to collect myself. Ledisi sings, shouts, claps, dances, emotes and just puts on a great show. A seasoned live performer and artist who is just breaking through to the rest of the world, but watch out, she’s on her way to the top. And a world in which she doesn’t is a world that needs to reevaluate itself. Yep!

The full interview is after the jump! It’s long, fair warning! We talked for almost 30 minutes, but it’s good stuff! I’m not gonna post the audio because of where we did the interview, but check out the transcript.

Ledisi Continues To Prove That There’s No Love “Higher Than This”!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 16, 09

OMG, let me tell you, I went to church. Went, gave offering, played the tambourine, got saved, backslid at the fish fry downstairs with one of the fine sistas in them big hats, then ran back upstairs to get saved AGAIN before the deacon locked the doors!

Ledisi mixes the spiritual with the primal use of her voice and the secular. But if you listen to this song, please believe, it’s a Gospel song. No doubt about it. It’s delivered as such in this case. She took Mo’Nique to the altar and back on her show this past Monday morning.

Continuing to thrill stages with her live performances and bombastic latest album, I predict that Ledisi will be around for a long time. She’s this generations Chaka Khan, and I see longevity in her spirit! AMEN!

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while then that means you already have Turn Me Loose. If not, GO GET IT!

And also, her Christmas album!? *outta here*

Did you catch that “COMEONINTHEROOM!” THAT WAS PURE CHUUUCH. So was that reprise. She started shouting too. LOL cue the ushers!

Music Video: Ledisi – “Going Through Changes”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 30, 09

Ledisi is a music & vocalist lover’s dream! Her voice is truly unmatched amongst the airwaves these days — a thing of power, grace, energy and raw talent unseen for a while. She’s a little bit country, a little bit Gospel, a whole lotta rock & roll!

Her excellent most recent album Turn Me Loose is a power packed musical journey, and “Going Through Changes” is one of the standout cuts on the album. Produced by Rex Rideout and co-written by Ledisi, the song soulful, somber and yet again, powerful expose of the ups and downs that we go through mentally in a relationship, good and bad, in and out, etc.

The video also exemplifies this, showing Ledisi almost in a struggle with shots of a mysterious pair of hands caressing her — and then, she is caressing herself. It’s a simple yet easy to understand treatment. Her mind is flashing back to the sexy moments that she’s struggling against.

One can say it’s a spiritual battle if you thought about it…but I won’t go there today with Ms. Ledisi!

All legs and makeup, Ledisi stands flat footed against her feelings and belting out this song to all those who will hear. Hopefully you’ve already heard because you’ve gotten the excellent Turn Me Loose. If not, take heed — this a change we can believe in! (OBAMA!)

Live Performances: Ledisi Gets “Loose” on Wendy Williams

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 21, 09

No for real…how could you NOT have this woman’s album!?

Ledisi’s latest “Turn Me Loose” is a vocal masterclass for all of these singers — old and new. I honestly take issue with people who don’t have this CD in rotation or at LEAST know who Ledisi is but you stay on Mariah’s lambchops? Nah unh, I can’t LOL!

No shade to Mariah, but seriously, Ledisi has talent OUT OF THIS WORLD. This performance had so much energy, life, and excellence that I just can’t even imagine…

I love Ledisi and I slacked on writing an album review (my bad Led!), but I don’t need to. Just watch this video. No lip-syncing or auto-tune here folks. The proof is in the pudding.

Go out and cop that NOW!
