    • Trina’s A “Million Dollar Girl” With The Help of Diddy & Keri

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 15, 10

Meh, I promise you I hadn’t heard this song until just now. Has this been out for a minute? Is radio playing this? It’s overly sugary for a hip-hop song, and Diddy’s even less believable than Trina on his verses (where is Trick Daddy or SOMEONE!?). Keri Hilson isn’t working hard at all either, but I still feel like she slightly overpowers this track.

I love how Trina is still rapping about the same things 5-10 years later. Hasn’t she been through hard times? Grown as an individual? LOL, cause pink Porsches and that costume jewelry…she needs more people. I think what was overly distracting were her and Keri’s hair choices. Now, Keri’s hair always looks like that, but Trina with that baby hair and them lacefront hairlines…

We gots to do better, hair-wise and lyrics-wise. Trina does look great though and I’m glad she’s kept her look together. But as far as rapping…she’s going to have to come a lot harder. This song feels dated, flat and seems like it doesn’t/won’t have much longevity…

Some R&B Ladies Actually…Singing! Melanie Fiona & Keri Hilson Do “Covers”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 25, 10

Melanie Fiona, sick and stuck in her apartment, does a cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” — the same song Rihanna sung on the “Hope for Haiti” Telethon that aired this past Friday night on a lot of major channels.

While I love Melanie’s voice, I think this is a song that is simple and really doesn’t call for a lot of inflections and rearrangement, but her voice is definitely strong and she shines. While Rihanna is well, Rihanna, I think her version was a bit more true to the original. Clearly, ya’ll know who my vote goes for for Best Female Vocalist betwixt the two of them!

However, ole girl sounds like this when she is sick? LOLOL, clearly there is a disturbance in the Force my children!

There were moments in this acoustic version of “Knocks You Down” when Keri Hilson’s sexiness level increased slightly! Real talk. Keri’s not the worst singer at all, and this song acoustic is MUCH more palatable. And of course, the subtraction of Ne-Yo shoots the comfortability level of my eardrums up 100x fold.

There are some people who don’t like Keri particular, but this was a nice change of pace without all the ghetto/urban posturing, breathless dancing and stage pandering.

Scraps From Timbaland’s Bassment Floor Via A New Video & Song

Written by The IPS in Blogs, New Music & Reviews, Videos on Nov 28, 09

Much like his album is sounding like a bunch of scraps and leftovers from juts whatever he felt like putting together so far…

The above video is the “International” version of his video “Morning After Dark” which I posted previously. It’s basically the same wack video just with a verse/appearance sung by Nelly Furtado, and it’s a condensed version of the previous video as well. I STILL don’t understand why he messed up this video like that. However, he already has a video in the can for his song with Drake called “Say Something”, which really sounds like Common’s “Punch Drunk Love” to me…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

A new song also leaked called “The One I Love” with Keri Hilson, Chris Brown and rapper D.O.E. Not really caring about this one either — I just really feel like Timbo is disconnected or on some other planet and is not really caring what we his listeners think. Plus it’s just kinda wack, and I think I just said a couple posts ago how maybe him & Keri need to get back together. Well, Keri’s a star in her own right and I think she’s giving Timbo her leftovers too. Wamp. Chris Brown won’t be on the final version either because of “timing”. Sure.

Live Performances: Keri Hilson Doesn’t Mind A “Slow Dance”…And Neither Do We!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 4, 09

I got to give it up to Keri Hilson, she smashed this vocally. This was a great performance from her. This is one of the songs I liked the most on …In A Perfect World production wise. It was just kind of old-school meets new school and it was sexy and sultry without doing the most.

Keri is so fine though…but I digress.

However, this album cycle has got to be over…does she have any new music? I heard she was back in the lab writing and making them checks come again that way, but I wouldn’t mind a more focused and well planned out sophomore album from her. Not one bit…

      New Music: Jahiem & Timbaland/Keri/Jay-Z

Written by The IPS in Movies, New Music & Reviews on Oct 22, 09

Two new joints dropped today that I thought were decent, so here’s a new music post!

Jaheim – “Ain’t Leaving Without You” [Listen + Download]

A new easy breezy Jaheim joint has surfaced today on the internets called “Ain’t Leaving Without You” and it’s crazy because I was just thinking about “what happened to Jaheim!?” Not a very good live performer but some of his songs are decent pop/R&B jams, and I wouldn’t call him a crooner, but he definitely had a penchant for a ballad. Not sure if this is coming from his new 5th album or not, but we haven’t heard from him in a minute. Jaheim’s voice is an interesting one — not too strong in and of itself, but you can really hear the thinness of it when he gets into the upper ranges, but the De La Soul/Whatanauts sample makes this instantly catchy. Listen and tell me what you think.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Timbaland – “Rumors” Feat. Keri Hilson & Jay-Z [Listen + Download]

Keri Hilson really just GOES with Timbaland ish for the most part. She’s an excellent featured artist, I swear. Songs from Shock Value 2 have been leaking left and right, including the song “Say Something” with Drake and another song with a French artist SoShy which was the official single. I hear Brandy is going to be rapping on Shock Value 2 under the name “BranNu” as well. Interesting.

Shock Value 2 drops November 23rd last I heard, and while I’ve not been too crazy about the other joints that have leaked, this one moves me around in my seat. Jay’s flow fits too with the tempo and I am enjoying it. Though Timbaland still has the propensity to sound like he’s repeating himself with his tracks, I’m sure SV 2 will be a monster.

Music Videos: Ester Dean – “Drop It Low”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 15, 09

Ester Dean is a new artist that we are finally getting to see after being “teased” by Interscope with these “Who Is Ester Dean?” promos. Her first single is taken from the More Than A Game soundtrack (trailer here), the Lebron James movie that is coming out at the end of the month.

The other song taken from that same soundtrack was MJB’s “Stronger”, which I just posted a video of her performing on Good Morning America last week.

Ester has dealt with some issues in the past about needing to lose weight, but apparently Polow Da Don told her she was good like she was and signed her after she’d had some success writing hit songs for many artists.

I personally think the beat to this song is pretty hot and of course, the lyrics are w/e. Amazing that these “songwriters” revert to such drivel as “drop it drop it low girl” but hey. LOL. Whatever sells!

Ester is by no means unattractive, but of course, if you put her next to a Keri Hilson, she is a little bigger. I don’t care though, do you?

The only thing I don’t like is that blonde tuft of hair at the top of her head…what’s up with that? LOL PePe LePew game proper!

Chris Brown features on the song, and people are already calling it a good comeback look for him. We forget so quickly in America LOL…but forgiveness is a godly trait so whatever! Lots of cameos by a lot of Interscope artists…ha. Oh and of course, Dr. Dre’s headphones make another appearance, just like they were in Keri’s new video. I see you Jimmy Iovine!

What do you think of Ester Dean’s jump into the fray as an artist?

Music Video: Keri Hilson – “Slow Dance”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 12, 09

Keri Hilson turns in another visual representation of one of the songs on her album that I actually liked. “Slow Dance” is more of a toss-back to R&B of the late 90’s. Keri has a great vocal performance on this track.

The video is a more straight-forward affair — cameos, lots of close ups, Keri in no clothes, etc. Nothing too much to see here, but Keri has yet to prove that she doesn’t look good…LOL. And was the short dance breakdown very Aaliyah-esque to anyone else?

I honestly don’t think that if you don’t already have the album that this video will make you go and get it — what do you think?

Live Performance: R. Keri Does “Number One” on Kimmel

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 4, 09

      [youtubeImYJl9uxnR8]

Pretty standard performance, nothing too special to write about besides Keri Hilson sitting on that bike like she was ready to get the hell home to take off her wig and eat some Chunky Monkey ROFL.

This song…I can see its appeal for the most part, but it still does nothing for me. R. Kelly’s best latest work has to be Whitney’s “I Look To You”.

It still amazes me how he can write such a beautiful moving song like that and then move on to something like “Number One”. Between him and Chris Brown and all the other kinda felonized singers, I don’t know who to listen to. No one is perfect though, so let’s just enjoy the music…

I am KIND of looking forward to hear what Robert’s going to put out into the musical universe…

Music Video: R. Kelly – “Number One” Feat. Keri Hilson

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 18, 09

R, Kelly’s back, and I guess he feels there’s been enough time for us to either have forgiven him or forgotten about all his scandal. Do you separate the man from the music? It’s an age old question. What will you do?

But if there is one thing R. Kelly can do, it’s craft a catchy song. And that’s the ONLY reason Jive has stuck with him — he makes them money LOL. He turns in for his first official single “Number One” with Keri Hilson. The video is a classy, coordinated affair, light on effects and whatnot. Mostly a performance video of the two of them either vibing together or vibing to the song separately.

There are a couple of inconsequential things that bother me — like Keri’s hammer pants + Beyonce’ fan = fashion tragedy LOL. Oh and R. Kelly saying “axe” and him bowing like someone from an Asian culture when he says “gracias baby!” (Spanish!)…what?! Come on LOL.

This song itself is kinda tepid to me, but people seem to like it. It’s not bad, but it feels like reheated Kelly leftovers. I tend to skip it because it becomes background music.  “R. Keri baby!” make a good combo though, maybe he can executive produce her next album because it’d be a more solid, thought out affair, I’m sure.

Visually though, the braids are gone, but R. Kelly still has his attraction to sparkles and purple. The city shots/studio shots are nice and warm, and even R. Kelly’s lighted LED backdrop is just understated enough to not be annoying. Thumbs up!
