    • The Only “Fireworks” Kelis Has Had Lately Have Been In Court With Nas, But…

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 17, 10

I honestly used to be a Kelis fan but I just canNOT get into her new music. I tried listening to the album and her voice and the music just don’t do anything for me. And it’s not that I don’t like dance music, because I do. Her version seems a little listless and lifeless and paint-by-numbers. Throw in some funky fashions and I feel like Kelis is trying to fool me that she REALLY isn’t jumping on the bandwagon…

Kelis has always been a bit quirky with her style, but I just can’t get into this nonsensical, 130 BPM music for the sake of liking Kelis and being a fan. She’s going to need to go back to the drawing board for me.

Kelis’ Fleshtone is in stores now.

Live Performance Round-Up: Kelis, Vivian Green, And Fat Joe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 14, 10

Kelis performed across the pond on Jools Holland and despite some sound difficulties, pulled it out. At least we know she is REALLY singing though LOL. “Acapella” is a weird song because I like it but I don’t. I don’t know why. I like it because I think it is about her son and that’s a dope lyric. But Kelis’ voice sounds like a pinched nerve to me LOL, if THAT makes any sense. It does in my head.

Vivian Green does her song “Too Intense” from her latest album Beautiful on the Mo’Nique Show and she talks about why she had been gone so long and what this new album of hers sounds like. Vivian Green has always had a great voice, but it’s been the material from this new CD that wasn’t really grabbing my attention. This song starts off a bit confusingly, but it settles into a nice pocket and Vivian hits some good vocal points throughout. Might make me go back and listen to the CD again…

She also does her single “Beautiful” if you want to check that out…

“I be the n**** uglier than Precious” — I cry everytime I hear that line LOL. Fat Joe does his song “Slow Down (Ha Ha)” on Mo’Nique as well. Why is his album called “The Darkside”…LOL. Jokes. I actually kind of liked the song because of the Soul II Soul sample but I grew out of that fast for some reason.

The One “A Capella” Note Kelis Sings Is Really Bad, But Otherwise…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 7, 10

ROFL you know what, I really am willing to give Kelis a chance with this new sound because it kind of fits her. I miss the Kaleidoscope Kelis though. That first album? Phew, killer! This new overly-dance-and-calculated-career-move Kelis doesn’t really irk me either because Kelis has always been “different”.

However, the glow sticks and auto-tune have come out for “Acapella” (which is spelled wrong BTW — I’m a music geek, sorry!) and she was doing all right in her Drag Queen of the Night get up and with her body-painted male harpies beating on their chests. Even will.i.am in the back didn’t make me take my eyes off the treat that was her headpiece.

      But that last note?

Goodnight and please return to sender!

Flesh Tone drops May 17th. If you can’t wait, she has a mixtape out called DJ Replay presents Queen of Hearts: Off with their Heads – Kelis: Flesh Tone Mixtape. There’s also a remix EP out as well.

Kelis Channels “Avatar” & Sacagawea In Her “Acapella” Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 29, 10

I really can’t rock with this song too much, but that’s mostly due to Kelis’ nasally yet smoky alto. This song sounds as if instead of running it through Auto-Tune they ran it through a new plugin called “Sinus-Tone”. It irks me!

However, I love the sentiment behind the song, and now after watching the video, I see my thoughts lined up with Kelis’. I figured the song was about love and I am thinking that theory is proven true since she is carrying her newborn baby on her back.

The “Avatar”-esque makeup and adornment, and then the final shot of her carrying Knight made me think instantly of American-Indians, which is what many people think the storyline of “Avatar” was based on anyway. The video is a visual melange of effects, makeup and looks that Kelis is letting us know she can pull off (remember when she came out she had that multi-colored afro?).

I’m still not sold however on the vocals. The visuals are interesting and colorful, but the vocals for this song are still a bit dull and lifeless. I wonder how her album will balance out…

New Music From R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, Kelis & Dondria

      R. Kelly – “Pregnant” Feat. Tyrese, Robin Thicke & The-Dream [Download + Listen]

This song is pretty ridiculous lyrically, but the vibe of the music and song would be dope with some other lyrics. I mean, R. Kelly is seriously too old for this. You know who should be singing this? Tank. Robin Thicke fits the most on this track, and The-Dream just…even the verse  he is singing *air quotes around singing* just makes me cringe. Waaaamp. Tyrese was in “Baby Boy” so this sounds like something he’d jump on LOL.

He also another one called “Crazy Night” that leaked…this one features/was produced by Rock City and he even adopts their island accents. I cannot. And I like Rock City. I think the thing that needs to be changed about both of these songs is…removing R. Kelly.
