    • What Do We Think: Ryan McDermott Wants To Buy Your Ticket To “Paradise”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 14, 13

I haven’t been able to find much about Ryan McDermott, aside from the fact that he’s a new signing to G.O.O.D. Music and was signed on the spot after a personal audition for Kanye West himself.

What I do know is that I’ve heard about this song for a while and finally tracked down a video for “Paradise”. Mr. McDermott submits his slinky, stacked vocal, futuristic version of Blue Eyed Soul with that the stabs and kicks that the music bed for “Paradise” is. I like this joint. His vocal is singular to me, and stands apart from the heavy feel of the track. The slight nasal and high timbre of his voice is a great counter to the kicks and subsonics that anchor this track.

In the video we see him loving and leaving, leading us to think that “Paradise” is only a one night stand and the morning sex that follows afterwards. It’s a great musical introduction to Ryan’s sound I believe, and I look forward to what he has to offer with the assistance of Mr. West. If this track is any indication of Ryan’s original sound, the two pairing up might produce some interesting R&B for our ears.

      What do you think?

Jay-Z And Kanye Unleash “Ni**as In Paris” Video. I Don’t Care?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 9, 12

      That’s it?

After the epicness that was the “Otis” video, we get some live concert footage? I mean, I didn’t get to go to the concert when it came to my neck of the woods as I was out of town and also spent that money instead on seeing PRINCE (HELLO!), but the concert itself looked to be pretty dope. All the tweets I saw from those who WENT to the concert seemed to be pretty positive, and of course, I heard numerous times that “Ni**as In Paris” was performed as an encore up to 7 times in some cities. That being said — I don’t care.

Watch The Throne is a big concept record, features two of the top talents in the hip-hop industry, so I feel like any visuals coming off of that record should be epic. This video, while cool, isn’t all that. I mean, I just wanted more. But I’m thinking the sales of the record didn’t justify that. The pop cultural cache and critical acclaim has probably been worth more than the digital sales and streams of everything else combined.

I did LOL at the epilepsy warning. Can I get a “this might be lame” warning as well?

In any case, this song’s beat still goes hard, and always incites mini-riots at the club. So let’s just act like this video didn’t happen and continue to enjoy the song at ignorant levels in our iPods, yes? Yes.

Explore Music: James Blake & Bon Iver + “Falls Creek Boys Choir”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 24, 11

I don’t know what kind of church or diocese would have this “choir” on stage, but this is a hauntingly strange yet cohesive song that I really liked.

However, I’m a James Blake fan. Never really had the chance to get into Bon Iver (I only have so much time, 2 ear drums, and only so much room on my HD these days), but we all know that Kanye West is a fan and has sampled him before and included him in live performances. Well UK bred and famous electro singer/songwriter James Blake and Bon Iver teamed up after learning they were mutual fans of each other. They premiered this joint on BBC’s Radio 1, and while I am not entirely sure what to make of it…I like it. And according to Miss Info, they crafted this song over email. Dope.

Y’all know I like crazy stuff though, so I want someone else to take a listen and leave a comment letting me know your immediate thoughts upon first listen. Let’s compare notes, shall we? Explore!

Jay-Z and Kanye West Stunt Their Swag To A Classic “Otis” Sample

Written by Donovan in Videos on Aug 22, 11

Although I am behind on posting this video, I wanted to take a chance to share the video for “Otis” from the superstar collaboration album Watch the Throne from Jay-Z and Kanye West. After watching this video I had one question: What recession?

While us peasants are busy scraping together coins to make it through another tough year, Jay-Z and Kanye West cut off the doors to a suped-up Maybach and drive around with beautiful women and playing with fireworks. How I envy the rich. If you were looking for something else to happen in this video, you can stop reading. Nothing else happens.

As for the song, it’s another ode to stunting as if it were a habit. There seems to be something ironic about the whole nature of this song, treatment of this video, with the “Try a Little Tenderness” sample from Otis Redding. These rappers need to find some new hobbies. So readers, what do we think?

When You’re Kanye West, It’s Even Fashionable To Be A “Monster”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Jun 8, 11

Oh Kanye. If I am ever famous enough to get invited to one of Kanye West’s house parties, please kindly remind me to NOT GO!

Mr. West has finally given us the final version of his video for fan favorite “Monster” and in it we get a mélange of goblins, ghouls and zombies with no conscience inside of Omari’s Haunted House. While this definitely begs the question of whether there is beauty to death and mutilation, I found myself wondering how many people sit around and think “let’s have women hanging around (literally) in their skivvies in the name of art and fashion!” What some people call misogyny, Kanye calls an art piece. No matter what the statement, I still personally don’t find corpses sexy.

Although Kanye sells it (with his bare chest), the rest of his cohorts, minus the over the top exploits of Nicki Minaj, sit around, breathe, and get paid. My kind of gig. This is still one of my favorite tracks off of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but this video is not one that I will be searching for to watch over and over. What do you think?

Classic Flashback: Kanye West – “All Falls Down”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Apr 25, 11

I know this isn’t an “old school joint” exactly, but, it did come out in 2003, which was 8 years ago. It doesn’t even feel that long ago. Kanye’s music has changed dramatically now that I think about it, and this song, video, and Syleena Johnson’s voice were just so perfect. This joint is a classic to me, especially the video.

And wait, did anyone else notice Kel Spencer from “Kenan & Kel” 0:26 seconds into the clip? I NEVER noticed that! He was handling the baggage. LOL!

Kanye’s definitely been through a lot of highs and lows in her personal life that have affected his music, and I spent the weekend thinking about old Kanye songs I loved, and this one was at the top of the list. He went from this and now he’s at songs like “Power” and “Dark Fantasy”. But now that I think about it, I can hear still strains of his earlier joints in his new music.

He’s one of the few people that have not necessarily changed, but more so evolved in my opinion.

What’s your favorite old Kanye song? Let’s reminisce! [Stacy Dash. My my my my my.]

Katy Perry & Kanye West Phone Home In “E.T.” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 31, 11

Wow, this song is super wack to me, but this video? Had to post it. It’s kind of cool and I’ve always been a fan of the director Floria Sigismondi. She really cranked up the crazy factor with these visuals. However, this video is kind of….scary to me? Katy’s eyes were doing a lot but that shifting “makeup” on her face bit was dope.

I’m no Katy Perry fan to be honest (though I love that most of her songs can be layered with 3 part harmony LOL), and I’m not a fan of her live either…but I have to give her some props for this expensive video. I haven’t seen a video like this in a hot minute.

I’m so mad at Kanye’s verses in this though. “Alien sex”? Oh, and the fact that he said he was going to probe someone….I just can’t LOL.

New Music: How Do You Like Your “H.A.M.”, Kanye & Jay-Z?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 11, 11

      Jay-Z & Kanye West – “H.A.M.”

Well, “H.A.M.” stands for “hard as a motherf****r” and while the beat does go a LITTLE hard, the rest of this does not indeed go h.a.m. As a matter of fact, call me a Muslim cause this is pork that won’t be on my plate.

The beat, done by Rick Ross affiliate Lex Luger, makes every attempt to be as epic and repeat-worthy as some of his other craftings like “B.M.F.” However, Jay-Z sounds every bit of his age — winded and lapsed by the music of the track. Kanye West sounds like he can’t keep up and his lisp is showing as he tries to hit the fast loose rap. It all sounds thrown together and then like it was left to congeal on the floor of a cold studio floor.

COULD this have been epic? Yes. Is it? No. It sounds, rushed, harried, haphazardly thrown together, and rushed out because Kanye and Jay-Z think that people will buy it and they are sliding in sessions via email and various jaunts and meetups around the country. Watch The Throne, the collabo album that this cut is pulled from, is due in March. Unless they come with something else though, I might have to throw this into the pile with Jay-Z’s & R. Kelly’s Best of Both Worlds collabo album.

Album Review: Kanye West Gives Us A $9.99 Peek Into His “Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 6, 10

Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
      3.5 stars out of 5

It’s taken me so long to write this review because Kanye West is a dense, egotistic, melodramatic, complex, multi-faceted, and overall megalomanic person — and this all makes for fascinating music and art. You have to be in a certain mood and mindset in order to fully digest and appreciate a Kanye West project. I use the word project because there are so many different dimensions to what Kanye does; musically, visually, thematically, and even spatially. This is my short attempt to share my thoughts with you on this project.
