    • Usher Needs To Blame It On The Alcohol For This “Hot Toddy” Situation…

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 28, 10

Usher – “Hot Toddy” Featuring Jay-Z & Ester Dean

I will admit to initially writing off Usher’s Raymond Vs. Raymond album, but songs like “There Goes My Baby” and “OMG” went on to become hits for Usher, and he’s been getting as much mileage out of them as he could. However, they are taking the well-trod “re-release” road by putting out an EP called Versus and also re-releasing Raymond Vs. Raymond with the EP as a double-disc set, both of which will be available August 24th.

“Hot Toddy” is produced by Polow Da Don and features Jay-Z and Ester Dean on vocals. Between Usher and Ester, these vocals feel rushed and at times; they sound downright unpolished in my opinion. Any goodwill Usher had with me because of “There Goes My Baby” flew out Tameka’s upper-floor spinster window.

Did he say “whoa kemo sabe”?! I guess. LOL, people will eat this up. Shouts to Jay giving props to The Illuminati. Shouts to Ester Dean for replacing Ciara’s vocals but managing to sound worse than her? This is just an overall fail and it makes me want to go have a drink. This AND that Pitbull song…come on Usher.

Hugo Has 99 Problems, 100 If You Count That He Looks Like A Murderer…

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 15, 10

Hugo was one of the first artists signed to Jay-Z’s RocNation label I think — it’s been a while. Well, his first single is here, and he is paying homage to his boss with a blues-rock cover of his song “99 Problems”. Now, as one that totally loves new reinterpretations of songs, I kind of love this! The video is a little scary (and I’mma just be messy and say ILLUMINATI!) with the “Hostel” look it has going on and close ups on lizard eyes, but I just closed my eyes and listened to the song. Dopeness.

Dude is British born, but was raised in Thailand and somehow ended up on RocNation? I know Memphis Bleek is mad — he still ain’t had another album! His album is named Old Tyme Religion and it is coming soon. What do you think of this?

A Selection From Jay-Z’s Jetting ‘Round The World To Perform At Festivals

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 10

Jay-Z rocked The Isle of Wight festival in the UK on Friday, June 11th and even brought out the reclusive-yet-ever-present-and-relevant Kanye West to bring his singular frenetic energy to “Run This Town” — andt no Rihanna in sight, thank GOD.

Then after that, he jetted back to Tennessee and helped to kill the environment by using his G5 to perform at Bonnaroo. Check out a clip of him doing “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”.

I got to admit, Jay-Z has evolved into an excellent and engaging live performer. He’s probably the closet hip-hop will ever get to a legacy act in terms of their ability to fill stadiums and present awesome live sets a la U2 or Rolling Stones. His band ALWAYS beasts and whoever his lighting director is needs an award. Jay-Z always builds tension with his sets somehow. Even though you know what’s next, you still walk away feeling like you saw something shiny and new each time. Thumbs up!

Sidenote: I really don’t like “Young Forever” LOL. I don’t know why. Ugh.

Live Performance Roundup! Did You Catch These?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 19, 10

Coachella (a huge music festival in Indio, CA) was this past weekend and Jay-Z brought out his wife Beyonce’ to sing the hook on “Forever Young”. Umm, do you see those boots? Wow. Only Bee. This performance was nice though, and she stayed in pocket. Very understated but she held it down in support of her man. Nice!

Drake, Chris Brown & more after the jump…

Jay-Z Is “On To The Next One” With This Latest Single & Visuals

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 1, 10

Jay-Z is stirring up controversy and simultaneously squashes it with his “On To The Next One” clip, which was directed by Anthony Mandler, who’s recently helmed clips for Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, and others.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Jay-Z and other acts (Kanye, Lady GaGa) being “Illuminatus” and Masons and worshippers of the Devil, and Jay-Z addresses this with the random imagery and weird vibe of his video, but by addressing it with this song, he proves he’s moving on while the rest of us are still chatting and spreading these “rumors” about him.

The video is a bit odd yet highly stylized and captivating, despite the fact that it is in black & white. Jay-Z knows how to get your attention and keep it for the timespan of a music video. My take is that Jay-Z is showing how he’s progressed and his businesses and money and influence have grown, through sports, fashion, entertainment, etc.

I have to say though, a lot of the costumes and imagery reminded me of Lady GaGa’s latest costumes and performances…

Was that Beyonce’? And was the hype man Memphis Bleek? I see Swizz Beatz in the building. The video moved so fast…

*insert a joke about Swizz marriage here* I’mma be good. It’s a new year! Happy new year! LOL!

World Series Baseball Has Been Good To The Chocolate Folks This Year

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 2, 09

Check the cast of my favorite show “Glee”, lead by the awesome Amber Riley, belting out a rendition of the National Anthem on Game 3 last week of the World Series. That sista sung DOWN! I ain’t mad girl, get your shine!! She tried to take it to church a little bit but that rearrangement wouldn’t let her Pentecostal self be great LOL. I see you though!

Also performing at Game 2 was Alicia Keys and Jay-Z doing their ubiquitous hit “Empire State of Mind”. The echo was murder on the song, and Alicia still refuses to act like she HAS to touch a piano key everytime she is onstage, but it was a historic occasion. Alicia just does something to me, but I’mma keep it clean. LOL.

Who knew the World Series and Black folks loved baseball that much? I didn’t, though I know from my Twitter timeline that all the NY Yanks black fans are def. tuned in.

Music Video: Jay-Z – “Empire State of Mind” (Feat. Alicia Keys)

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 2, 09

The video that everyone has been waiting for has dropped and it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a grand anthemic song like this one — lots of swooping visuals of the city, a feeling of being in the “big city” and some nostalgic shots thrown in for good measure.

Jay-Z seems to be on top of the world, with snapshots of the places and whatnot that he talks about in the song. Alicia Keys is “playing” the piano and looking every bit of “refined” “Songs in A Minor” A. Keys as she can, swaying and rocking, looking thick and nice in all the right places LOL. Lights, camera, action by Hype Williams.

Nothing more, nothing less. The song IS about New York though.

I think Alicia should just quit w/ the piano playing, she looks awkward. We know you play! You could’ve done something else LOL. The images and whatnot on the piano were a nice touch though. What say ya’ll?

      New Music: Jahiem & Timbaland/Keri/Jay-Z

Written by The IPS in Movies,New Music & Reviews on Oct 22, 09

Two new joints dropped today that I thought were decent, so here’s a new music post!

Jaheim – “Ain’t Leaving Without You” [Listen + Download]

A new easy breezy Jaheim joint has surfaced today on the internets called “Ain’t Leaving Without You” and it’s crazy because I was just thinking about “what happened to Jaheim!?” Not a very good live performer but some of his songs are decent pop/R&B jams, and I wouldn’t call him a crooner, but he definitely had a penchant for a ballad. Not sure if this is coming from his new 5th album or not, but we haven’t heard from him in a minute. Jaheim’s voice is an interesting one — not too strong in and of itself, but you can really hear the thinness of it when he gets into the upper ranges, but the De La Soul/Whatanauts sample makes this instantly catchy. Listen and tell me what you think.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Timbaland – “Rumors” Feat. Keri Hilson & Jay-Z [Listen + Download]

Keri Hilson really just GOES with Timbaland ish for the most part. She’s an excellent featured artist, I swear. Songs from Shock Value 2 have been leaking left and right, including the song “Say Something” with Drake and another song with a French artist SoShy which was the official single. I hear Brandy is going to be rapping on Shock Value 2 under the name “BranNu” as well. Interesting.

Shock Value 2 drops November 23rd last I heard, and while I’ve not been too crazy about the other joints that have leaked, this one moves me around in my seat. Jay’s flow fits too with the tempo and I am enjoying it. Though Timbaland still has the propensity to sound like he’s repeating himself with his tracks, I’m sure SV 2 will be a monster.

Sean Carter Sits With Oprah As The Whole World Watches

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 25, 09

Jay-Z was on Oprah and they talked about a lot of stuff. Peep Part 1 and then Parts 2, 3 and 4 after the jump.

In Part 1, Oprah asks him what he’s wearing (cologne wise), how rap has affected the culture at large (in which Jay says that rap has done more than anything to affect racism in our time through the power of music as a universal language and how racism is not taught in music but is taught in the home), how powerful it is that Oprah was standing in Marcy Projects with him, and more. In Part 1 they also do a walkabout of his old home, Marcy Projects, and talk some of his history and why he turned to drug dealing initially. They toured his grandmother’s house where he lived until he was 5, with the crowds building. Also was brought up how his father’s leaving affected him emotionally and the eventual reconnection of the two spurred on by his mother. Lastly, how he never got high on his own supply!

The other parts after the jump!

Affion Does It Again; “Hunt Chris Brown” is A Spot On Spoof!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 21, 09

ROFL I can’t with this dude…how he does it, I don’t know, but someone really needs to give him a show! Real talk! This spoof of “Run This Town” is spot on, A+++.

The “Kanye” line “I don’t condone violence/but violets are no-no’s” had me on the floor in stitches. And the Rihanna accent had my soul wrapped up and under arrest.

If you haven’t already, subscribe to Affion Crockett’s Youtube channel. It’s a barrel of laughs. Especially on a Manic Monday!
