    • It’s A “Cold” World, And Janelle Monae’s Solitary Tear Sums That Up Nicely

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 5, 10

      This woman is beautiful…wow.

Anyway, the video for “Cold War” has dropped and it’s ALL about Janelle Monae. She’s left to show emotion and give the song life without the use of dancing, props, green screens, effects, and anything else BUT herself. I think she’s aiming to get some acting roles here, because she does a great job. Using her eyes, some camera work, and some real (or fake?) tears, she sings about how this world is cold, and we are in a fight but do we truly know what we’re fighting for?

Don’t cry when she says goodbye and leaves us behind.

This is one of my favorite songs from The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III), which according to my Last.fm, I have worn OUT. She just captures a feeling I have right now particularly in my own life, so this video resonates all that much more with me. I’m glad to see her shed the cape and gyrations. We’re left with an honest connection, beautiful head & shoulders, and a chance to reflect upon what the song means to us personally. Kudos.

And is it just me, or does she give you glints and hints at Diana Ross in her heyday? Maybe it’s the shoulders and the bone structure, but I saw this and thought “Diana Ross”. Random, I know.

This “Tightrope” Must Be A Little Wider Now That Lupe And B.o.B. Have Jumped On It

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 1, 10

I love Janelle Monae, color-blind as she is! HA.

Lupe Fiasco (I kinda miss that dude) and B.o.B. jump on to freshen up the “Tightrope” remix and even Janelle gets a couple of bars in at the folks who have something to say about her clothes and posing in Vogue magazine. I’m not mad at all, GET EM!

She either looks like she is about to serve some hors d’oeuvres at a Diddy party with Dirty Money OR ride a black & white horse at the racetrack. Either way, she’s cute and I’m digging it. What ya’ll think?

Janelle Monae Has A “Smile”, Song, And Style That Can’t Be Denied

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 23, 10

Janelle Monae’s latest album is on continuous replay over here! Her funk and soul stylings meets the new millennium just do it for me these days. She does a cover of Michael Jackson’s favorite song, Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile”, in her own distinctive Janelle Monae way. Love it.

How could you not love this? It’s also been on her projects and she does it live often so there are numerous clips of her doing this song.

I’ve heard about some people not being a fan of hers, but hey, to each their own LOL. Yes, I do cringe lately when I hear her about to do them “Whether I’m HIGH or LOW” notes on “Tightrope”, but on this cover she did for Billboard magazine, she definitely exemplifies that she has the vocal chops to do much of whatever she wants. Period.

New Music: Eminem, Janelle Monae, Cee-Lo, Stanza, & Slum Village

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 3, 10

Eminem – “Won’t Back Down” Feat. P!nk [Download]

Wow, this joint leaked today and all I am gonna say is Eminem said:

“Shake that a** like a donkey with Parkinsons / Make like Michael J. Fox is in ya draws playing with an Etch-A-Sketch” — BEST LINE EVER! This lyrics on this song is bananas. I have listened to it 5x times already LOL. And I’m always down for Pink, obviously. Recovery in stores June 22nd.

Janelle Monae – “Tightrope” (Wondamix) Feat. B.o.B. & Lupe Fiasco [Download]

This joint goes! Janelle Monae even spits a few bars — I think she might want to stick to James Brown shuffling but I can dig it LOL! Lupe! B.o.B. is on here too.  I’m still jamming this album, my Last.fm tells the tale. I like the music change too. Go get that The ArchAndroid album now — she is quickly falling down the charts…

      More after the jump…

It’s All Jesus & James Brown For Janelle And Her “Tightrope”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 26, 10

      [youtube  _HCl5xcfIIc]

LOL, this was basically the same performance she did on Letterman (which was simply KNOCKOUT!) but it still goes hard. I do see what ya’ll were saying about them “whether I’m high or low” sections — I know her voice is going to get real tired of doing that parts by the end of this promotional cycle LOL.

Still, “Tightrope” doesn’t get old to me and PLEASE check out them background singers/dancers. I mean, wow.

But Janelle is a church kid. I am CONVINCED. From what I’ve seen and her, she has GOT to be. Her and her band! “Yes Lord!” That was too sincere. Girl, you better THANK HIM for your blessings HA!

Ellen just got a record label so she is on my sh*tlist right now, seriously, but I’m glad she had Janelle on. Janelle’s album debuted at #17 on the Billboard 200, which baffles me. That album is so good. We need to spread the word. Go tell some of your yt friends ya’ll!

Album Review: Janelle Monáe’s “The ArchAndroid” Is A Futuristic-Rock-Soul-Funk-Opera-Musical

Written by FirstGentleman in New Music & Reviews on May 24, 10

      Janelle Monáe – The ArchAndroid
      4 stars out of 5

Reviewers’s Note: Before I start I must preface this by saying I am the BIGGEST JANELLE MONAE FAN IN THE WORLD! Now with that said this review may or may not contain a few biased opinions.

R&B can be summed up in a few themes; “Party Anthems,” “Sappy Ballads,” “Sex-Me-Down-Slow,”, and “She/He Done Me Wrong” songs. The common complaint among must music aficionados is that everything is too generic or that everyone sounds like they are trying to copy Michael Jackson. In reality, that seems to be true, but every now and again the planets align and the poles shift and something big happens on the musical scene. This go round it is The ArchAndroid.

The ArchAndroid must be looked at in the proper context to be fully understood. It is not an “album.” It isn’t a “record” or a “CD” either — it is a futuristic-rock-soul-funk-opera-musical. It is epic. It is a trilogy that must be digested in three parts (please listen to The Chase Suite Vol. I before listening to Vol. II & III).

Janelle Monáe’s “Tightrope” Is A Thin Line Between Funk, Gospel & Soul

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 19, 10

This performance? Flawless victory! She just sold some records with that one!

Janelle Monáe has taken to the airwaves to promote her just realeased “The ArchAndroid” and her first stop was David Letterman. This performance was AMAZING. I got goosebumps. Janelle crafted an 4 minute experience just for me — at least that’s how I felt!

It was everything Janelle, James Brown, church, funk, Sharon Jones, ATL, quirky, soulful, and just GOOD. She changed up the vocal, there were minute adjustments and tweaks which made the song even better, the BAND was killing (KILLING!), and it was just all together lovely.

If you weren’t a fan before last night, you surely are now. And if you were a fan that hadn’t bought the album at midnight, you surely just did!

      Loved it!!

News Bits For Your Monday: Bad Boys 3, Bobby Brown, SNL, Lena Horne RIP, Drake & Janelle Monae

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 10, 10

There may be a Bad Boys 3 happening in the very near future, ON TOP of Men In Black 3 being confirmed! [Coming Soon]

We live in a world where Bobby Brown is getting engaged and where Chilli can’t get a man. Wow. [People]

Betty White was HILARIOUS on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Seriously. I cannot stop laughing at “Wizard of Ass”. Check the clip above! Jay-Z was the musical host, but I wasn’t especially moved by any of his performances. Though his drummer Tony Royster, Jr. is one of my personal favorites.

RIP Lena Horne, one of the pioneering Black actresses in her own right and also a fantastic and emotionally captivating singer. Most folks of the younger generation will remember her as Glenda the Good Witch from “The Wiz”, which also featured Michael Jackson :( [New York Times]

Don’t forget ya’ll — Drake can ACT too! Looking for the right material though…. [MTV News]

Listen to snippets from Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid, which is due out May 18th. Seems very theatrical, dark yet light and operatic. I think the singles may have been a bit misleading…but still great music nonetheless.

Album Covers: Janelle Monae & Ice Cube; Two Drastically Different POV’s!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 22, 10

I Am The West, which is preceded by the first single “I Rep That West”, is due to drop July 13th, 2010. The album cover has leaked, and I must say, Ice Cube is looking GANGSTA GANGSTA. That shotgun? Whoa. Is he gonna use that to scare the movie suits into making his next (non)gangsta movie? Just saying LOL.

I am SO excited about Janelle Monae’s album. Seriously. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about new music in a while. The ArchAndroid drops May 18th, and I am so anticipating this. “Tightrope” has seriously been on my playlist non-stop since it dropped. There’s even a whole backstory that she has worked up as part of the album marketing and promotion. I love it that she’s on her own planet and in her own reality. LOL. Don’t you?

Whether or not the following information came from Ryan Wakeman, WARPA, the Gaiming community or Janelle Monáe’s journals, Max Stellings and the Palace of the Dogs Archives is inconclusive at this time…What is known or agreed upon is that this information stems from an official entry on The ArchAndroid Crown in the Living Cyktionary, a 28th Century encyclopedia…

The ArchAndroid Crown: Designed by Zoman Ignatius, the half-elf, half-human mystic, reportedly 500 years ago. According to legend, the crown has several magic properties, as well as innovative technologies that can be employed only by The ArchAndroid. Zoman was a consummate inventor, artist and sculptor, a cross between Tesla and Da Vinci, and as such, he designed the crown to be a work of beauty that would embody the very spirit of Metropolis. According to legend, the crown features prominent Metropolis buildings and towers that will light up radiantly when the one and only true ArchAndroid wears the crown. According to the Daily Horos, this opulent headdress was stolen from the vaults in the Black House, reportedly by 1954, in October of 2715. Several members of 1954 were hunted down and executed for this crime. But the crown was never found. Many claim it has been secreted away to the Wonderground. There is also word that in the year 2010, several 1954 operatives have crafted a replica of this historic headdress to be worn by Janelle Monáe in anticipation for her album The ArchAndroid…no word on whether or not this replica has magic properties… The Living Cyktionary, 9th Edition, 2719

Church In The Jook Joint: Janelle Monae Does “All The Way Turnt Up” Gospel Style!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 9, 10

I think someone has been spying on me in the shower, because ummm, I do this all the time.

You can ask my friends ROFL, I’ve been singing this song constantly. Just the hook. Because Roscoe Dash makes me want to choke a baby seal out with that incessant nasal tone he has (and his haircut). FirstGentleman can tell you I harmonize to EVERYTHING and make every song a church song!

But leave it to Janelle Monae to straight break it down Pentecostal style in the club ROFL! I am so dead at this. AND the 3 part harmony breakdown! Let me find out she was/is a church girl. That just made her and her music sexier. So mad I missed her in LA :(

“Tightrope” for the rest of the day!
