    • Janelle Monae KILLS But At Times Her Vocals Walk A “Tightrope”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 16, 10

I.love.this.song. I seriously listen to it everyday ya’ll. Janelle Monae’s “Tightrope” has become required morning listening for my morning jigs and wake-up sessions. The track, the music, the horns, the energy, the EVERYTHING is just so on point. BET’s “Rip The Runway” came on last night (March 15th) and while the rest of the show was nothing to write home about, Janelle Monae lit UP the stage with her James Brown-esque moves and charisma. At times, the vocals were a little hit or miss, but seriously, it barely mattered. Home girl was GETTING it like it was the last time she was going to be able to do the Funky Chicken on her Good Foot before her gout kicked in.

      Loved it!

Between Nicki Minaj’s follow-the-dot pace of reading her cue cards, and Pooch Hall’s continuous hollering like he was at a hip-hop concert, mixed with the generally uninteresting fashions, it was pretty dreadful. Dwight from RHOA gave some girl a makeover looking like, well, I don’t know, and Trina flopped her way through “Million Dollar Girl”. I was unimpressed, sans Miss Monae.

Did ya’ll watch “Rip The Runway”? The only thing that got ripped over here was my cable bill LOL!

Janelle Monáe Brings The Heat With “Cold War”

Janelle Monae – “Cold War” [Listen + Download]

Janelle Monáe CONTINUES to impress with these self=leaked songs off her next album The ArchAndroid, which is due May 18th. She makes this instantly danceable soul/pop/funk music which just is speaking to me on so many levels.

You can immediately hear the Outkast influence in her music though — this songs has loads and loads of “B.O.B.” all throughout the track. But that doesn’t matter — Janelle makes it her own and turns her voice into this outerspace-discovered, new to this atmosphere instrument unto itself. She does so many interesting things with her vocals, especially on that “It’s cold war…” line.

I love her lyrics though. Just listen to this song and tell me what you get out of it. I want to see if it’s the same that I got…

Janelle Monae Balances Gracefully On Her “Tightrope”

      Janelle Monae – “Tightrope” [Download]

It is no secret I STAN for Janelle Monae. I mean HARDCORE stanning! I saw her in concert 8 times last year (don’t judge me, most of them were free). The last concert I saw her perform at Kia Soul Collective in November in Hollywood, CA. She electrified the crowd with her singing, dancing, painting and crowd surfing.

The highlight of the set for me was when she unveiled her new song “Tightrope” off her new album The ArchAndroid which drops May 18. I was drawn in by the James Brown-esque baseline and her funky delivery. Here, she has perfected the sound with a” classy brass” section and a verse from her mentor Big Boi. Sure, I maybe biased but this is quite possibly the funkiest thing this millennium.

IPS/Editor’s Note: I immediately started dancing and I haven’t stopped yet! And I love her enunciation — so crisp! Take note Jazmine Sullivan. LOL! Make sure you go get that “Come Alive (War of the Roses)” which I posted previously — they go RIGHT together.

We Love Janelle Monae But This Outfit = *__________*

Written by The IPS in Celeb Snapshots on Nov 24, 09

I love Janelle Monae, and “Come Alive (War of the Roses)” tops my playlist DAILY.

However, this getup above? ROFL she looks like a Vampire Bullfighter. Ole’!

She must be auditioning for the Telemundo/Telenovela version of “Twilight”. I ain’t mad, it’s all about that paper chase! She made an appearance at the MTVU Woodie Awards last week, and this is her red carpet outfit and pose.

      Well alright!

Janelle Monae Makes Me “Smile” With This Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 6, 09

SoulCultureUK sent over this performance of Ms. Monae’s first ever London appearance in which she stunned the crowd (and me) with her cover of the old song “Smile”, which was recently done by Jermaine Jackson @ Michael Jackson’s funeral service.

I’m blown away by her poise during this performance though. She came through strong and clear and stripped away all the futuristic yet possibly distracting performance attire and accoutrement to just simply sing, and sing she did.

It’s nice to be reminded every now and then that your favorite performers are actually vocalists too. Because there is a difference — message!

      Bravo!

New Music: Janelle Monae – “Come Alive (The War of the Roses)”

Janelle Monae – “Come Alive (The War of the Roses)” [Download/Listen]

I am loving this song! The vibe is all, rock/soul meets Addams Family/Monster Mash! Tell me I’m lying?!

Janelle Monae’s music has been a curious favorite of mine. At times I love it, other times I’m a little lackadaisical about it. Her Metropolis project, which was re-released by Diddy when she signed to Bad Boy was an exciting, future-leaning work. Her live performances have been 50/50 to me. Always energetic and spontaneously great, but vocally, not so much.

However, she’s finally put out some new music, teaming up with Kia for their Kia Soul Collective, which is just a fancy way of them getting exposure for their new Kia Soul car. It’s working.

The cut goes hard and has typical trademark Janelle rhythms and vocals, with a NASTY rock edge to it though. I’m loving it like McDonald’s though. Shouts to my boy Modi at DCtoBC.com as I spotted this joint at his house first!

Curious as to how she is going to affected by Diddy’s recent shifting from WEA to Interscope…hope she doesn’t regret that decision she made to sign to Bad Boy…
