Interview: Tha Feedback Chats With YahZarah About “The Ballad Of Purple St. James”, Music, Life, & More!

Written by The IPS in Interviews on Oct 6, 10

When The Foreign Exchange swung through the West Coast and returned to Portland, I got the chance to sit down with one of my personal favorite R&B singers of the moment, YahZarah. We had a rousing discussion about female producers, being an independent artist and trying to pay Sallie Mae, music, her brothers in Foreign Exchange Phonte & Nicolay, Stevie Wonder….and more! It was like talking to an old friend, so I had to edit this interview heavily so ya’ll could understand and get the full story about Ms. Purple St. James!

If you’re not familiar with her — you should be. Her latest record The Ballad of Purple St. James is a musical smash, which features a smattering of her tastes and musical upbringing. It’s a well rounded, well sung, and well produced record that is available now. You should go get it. Why? Because I said so, and you know we’d NEVER steer you wrong here at Tha Feedback!

Share this link with your friends, and tweet @Yahzarah and tell her you saw it at Tha Feedback! Hit the jump for the full transcript!

Interviews: Tha Feedback Sits With The Illustrious Kim Burrell!

Written by The IPS in Interviews on Apr 13, 10

I had the distinct pleasure of not only singing background for Kim Burrell while she performed in Portland, OR during Easter but also interviewing her for Tha Feedback. Gracious and humble, Ms. Burrell sat down with us as we discussed her new direction, new album, new outlook, new opportunities and just had a great conversation about music in general!

She spilled the details on who she may be working with on her new album (Rodney Jerkins, Alex Ward and J. Moss); how much weight she’s lost (97 lbs.); how her attitude has changed; singing secular music and/or country music; and she even talks about what she would be doing if she wasn’t a singer (an attorney!). Share this interview with your friends!

Kim’s new album is sounding like when it gets released, it will be a new sound and some FRESH music. I’m excited! Hit the jump for the full interview!

Jack Splash – “I Could Have Loved You” Feat. Missy Elliott & Jazmine Sullivan
Download Jack Splash’s Free Mixtapes // Twitter // Official Site

You may not know the name if you are in America, but Jack Splash is probably one of your favorite DJ’s favorite producers. After hitting big worldwide with his alter-ego Plantlife, which sports an electro-funk meets disco meets hip-hop had a bastard baby with R&B sound, Jack Splash got to work in the States as a songwriter and producer, expanding his ever growing resume and winning a Grammy by producing “I’m His Only Woman” with Jennifer Hudson featuring Fantasia, “Teenage Love Affair” with Alicia Keys, “Be My #2″ by R. Kelly and more cuts with Estelle, John Legend and it goes on and on.

While not masterfully mixing, co-writing and cranking out hits, he’s also an artist himself. He’s dropped 2 mixtapes, Heir To The Throne, Vol. 1 and King of The Beats, Vol. 1, with a 3rd, Future of the Funk to drop soon. All serve as prequel to his debut album “Technology and Love Might Save Us All…”, which drops this Spring and is lead by the buzz single “I Could Have Loved You” which features Missy Elliott & Jazmine Sullivan (which you can hear above).

Phew! Still don’t know who he is after that introduction? Well, after the jump, you can read the interview that FirstGentleman & I did with Sir Jack. He talks about his music, being the musical underdog, his advice to new artists, his inspirations, processes, and more!

So, read on, and be sure you go download his mixtapes at the links above! Follow him on Twitter, Facebook and Myspace and tell him Tha Feedback sent ya!

The Feedback Sits With The Incomparable Ledisi For An Interview

Written by The IPS in Interviews on Jan 5, 10

      The IPS & Ledisi

Let me tell you, my year ended RIGHT!

If you are a reader of this blog, you know I am the biggest fan of Ledisi. Well it was my pleasure and honor to sit down and have an interview with her after checking out her show up in Seattle, WA on December 18, 2009 at the Jazz Alley. She’d been doing 2 shows a night for the past 4 days and was tired, but she gave me the time of day and was so gracious about it.

Ledisi is a force to be reckoned with and we had a long chat about her music, her upbringing (and not in the church as you might expect), the independent vs. major label business, her Grammy nominations and more! She also sung Happy Birthday to me as well (*fainted*). If you don’t know, consider yourself informed — Ledisi is an artist to watch. Even after all that singing, she STILL sounded amazing and gave the crowd MORE than what they wanted and expected.

If you haven’t seen her live — GO. NOW! She gives 200% and just pours out of herself. And as she says, it’s “church in a jook joint!” There were a couple of times where I went in and had church and had to collect myself. Ledisi sings, shouts, claps, dances, emotes and just puts on a great show. A seasoned live performer and artist who is just breaking through to the rest of the world, but watch out, she’s on her way to the top. And a world in which she doesn’t is a world that needs to reevaluate itself. Yep!

The full interview is after the jump! It’s long, fair warning! We talked for almost 30 minutes, but it’s good stuff! I’m not gonna post the audio because of where we did the interview, but check out the transcript.

Interviews: Tha Feedback Catches Up With Lil Mo!

Written by The IPS in Interviews on May 19, 09

      Lil Mo

We had the chance to sit down with Lil Mo for a phoner as we caught up with her about her latest projects, transitioning through different phases of life, and the latest scandals to hit the ‘Net. It was a HIGHLY enjoyable interview and I’ve decided to post the audio as well as the transcription of the interview.

Enjoy this hilarious, and at times spiritual, interview as Mo and I talked about Cassie’s scandal, why she’s called “The Godmother of Hip-Hop and R&B, her independent ventures, the balancing act that is her life, and most importantly, where she has been all this time! She also doled out some good life advice too!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Interviews: Tha Feedback Talks With Chester Gregory

Written by The IPS in Interviews on May 8, 09

      Chester Gregory

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Chester Gregory sings “I Only Have Eyes 4 U” Live for Tha Feedback

Introducing to most and presenting to others Chester Gregory. This new, yet not, artist is bringing his distinctive mark to the R&B world with his new album In Search of High Love. Coming from Broadway success and a deep rich and varied musical background, his ample range and grown and sexy approach to music make his debut album a pleasurable listen.

In a time of independent success and shrinking major labels, Chester is stepping out on his own and hoping that you will be convinced that his voice is one you want to hear on a daily basis. We talked about a lot in our interview, from his success on Broadway, his humble beginnings outside of the traditional “black gospel” church, and to how he adapts quickly from stage to studio and back.

A tireless hustler, a gentleman, a talented vocalist and musical force to be reckoned with — these are all the things that describe Chester Gregory. It was a great interview and he dropped lots of knowledge, so it’s lengthy! We talked about 30 minutes!

Check out an exclusive clip of him singing a snippet of his single “Only Have Eyes 4 U” above and peep the rest of the interview after the jump!

      Interviews: Melanie Fiona

Written by The IPS in Interviews on Mar 1, 09

      Melanie Fiona

So I got the chance to do a phoner with the lovely Melanie Fiona. She’s as gracious and polite as she is a good of a singer. I had a great time chatting with her, despite both of us having colds and feeling under the weather! Talking to her about her influences was fascinating, and really makes me feel great and excited about her soon to drop project titled The Bridge. I asked questions about her roots and the new world that she has entered head first called “the music industry”.

I’d featured her a while ago on a podcast (Episode #2) back in November (yeah, I was one of the first to drop her music on the web…) and had been enjoying her music ever since.

I even got an impromptu performance of “O Canada” out of her! She is a native Canadian and said that I was the first to ask (go me!).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

So check out the interview she gave us after the jump and learn more about the new artist that Kanye West and others have raved about. Soon…you will to. I present to you…Melanie Fiona.
