    • What Do We Think About Chromeo’s “Night By Night”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 7, 09

Chromeo is one of my favorite “North of the Border” AKA Canada bands beside Jully Black. I love their electro-pop meets disco music and their gratuitous use of the Vocoder is by no means annoying as they kill it. Their new video has hit and it’s just 80′s synths and vocoded goodness with the “Flashdance” moves to prove it’s 80′s-ness. I love how people use their videos to make themselves be something they totally aren’t — AKA sexy-flexy all come hither with the dance moves HAHA (pause). You get what I mean.

What do ya’ll think of Chromeo? Fun yes?

You can get this song as a free download from the Mountain Dew sponsored site GreenLabelSound.com too!

Estelle & David Guetta Give Out Hope And “One Love”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 2, 09

I’m sorry, David Guetta’s face in this clip…he looks like a sad clown! What is going on!?

Anyway LOL, in this clip for the 3rd single (which is also the title cut) from his album (after “When Love Takes Over” w/ Kelly Rowland and *gag* “Sexy Bitch” with Akon), Estelle croons and David drives (Get it? He’s the DJ!) around the city passing out love and hope via dance music. Pop-locking bums? #wheretheydothatat?

This song itself is low-key enjoyable though, though I’m not sure how I feel about Estelle getting her Fairy Godmother on LOL. David Guetta’s album One Love is in stores now and has been a hit all over the world.

      Thoughts?

Travis McCoy Gets Reflective On Charity Single “One At A Time” for World Aids Day

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 1, 09

World AIDS Day 2009 is celebrated worldwide on December 1st. “One At A Time” benefits the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, which is in existence to “encourage, energize, and empower young people who are involved in HIV/AIDS awareness, education and prevention campaigns.” Travis McCoy is an ambassador and Kelly Rowland has also been involved with this foundation.

Earlier this year Travis McCoy, front man of Gym Class Heroes and Staying Alive Foundation Ambassador embarked on an epic, life-changing adventure. This adventure saw him travel to South Africa, Philippines and India, to meet with young people who run remarkable grass-roots HIV and AIDS awareness projects.

When Travis returned from his travels, the adventure was far from over… He had just a few weeks to write and record a brand new track inspired by his experiences.

Travis embraced the challenge; the track titled One At A Time is now ready and available to download via iTunes in the US and BandCamp globally. All proceeds from sales will benefit the Foundation, enabling us to fund many more vital HIV projects around the world.

Travis and the Foundation are now asking for your help. Travis has committed to raising $100k for the Foundation, but he can’t do it without you…. (Source)

You can get involved by purchasing the single for $0.99 on iTunes! Travis’ The Unbeaten Track documentary also airs today on MTV. Inform yourself about World AIDS Day 2009 here. Get tested and stay protected ya’ll. Shouts to all those who know someone affected by HIV/AIDS or who have lost someone from the disease. I have, so today I’m remembering my uncle. Tha Feedback definitely supports World AIDS Day.

Laura Izibor Will Be Alright Whether Or Not You “Stay”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 1, 09

I first came across Laura Izibor when I was working on some movie soundtracks and her song “Mmm…”, and she’s since gone on to release an album hear in the States after much international critical acclaim. She’s an Irish born singer/songwriter/producer who’s yet to break through majorly in the here in the US.

Her voice is of that quality of Chrisette Michele’s — either you like it or you don’t. I don’t mind her at all, but she’s almost a mix of Oleta Adams, Anita Baker, Chrisette and Avril Lavigne vocally to me, if that makes any sense. Random, I know. However, her latest video for her single “Stay” features a pretty nice clip that illustrates the ups and downs of a relationship (mostly the downs) and features actor Rob Bacon (“Finding Forrester”).

I like how the clip shows that there is constant upheaval, day till night, and in the end, breaking up is easier to do than staying together. What do you think about Laura? Share your thoughts.

Explore Music: J*DaVeY & UK Act La Roux

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 26, 09

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

J*DaVeY – “Outta The Window” [Download + Listen]

I love the hook on this joint! The beat moves along nicely and it fits the vibe of Miss Jack Davey’s voice. Not sure if Mr. Brook D’Leau produced it or not, but I’m going to assume it is in-house since they are dropping a new mixtape called Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistape on Christmas Day. Love the title. Free music for everyone Christmas Day, so far from them and Lupe. Spotted at okayplayer. Their music is just different enough to be fresh but not that different that you can’t GET it, if the vibe is right.

La Roux is an English electro-pop outfit featuring the androgynous lead singer Eleanor Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid. Their music is a blend of instantly catchy hooks and pop/electro beats, with “I’m Not Your Toy” being the 3rd single from their debut album La Roux. I’m loving this song and it’s futuristic video, which basically features EVERYONE giving her and her backup dancers the side-eye until they all decide they like it and start dancing. How dope is that!?

And feast your eyes on all that Black people chocolate goodness! I was like, wow, she got more Black women in her video than the US singers have, minus Shakira and her “Stomp The Yard” choreography in “Give It Up To Me”. I like this a lot though!

Jully Black Is “Running” For US Recognition, What Do You Think?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 25, 09

I’ve posted about Jully Black before, as she is one of my favorite North of the Border R&B artists. Her last album Revival was THROUGHLY enjoyable. Much better than most American R&B albums that came out that year (2007) actually.

Well, she’s back with a new album called The Black Book and this single “Running” is the first video to be released for it.

It’s a much more laid-back affair than her last album’s singles, like “Seven Day Fool”. However, her voice is strong and though highly stylized this time around, Jully looks great. She’s that artist that people know but not really, as she’s worked with a lot of people here in the US as well. This video may not establish her US presence anymore, but it’s a good attempt nonetheless. “Running” the song itself is a decent affair, but I much prefer Jully when she’s uptempo and/or more ferocious.

What do you guys think of “Running”? Check out her website and also follow her on Twitter!

k-os Wishes He Knew “Natalie Portman” But Has Nelly Furtado Instead

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 16, 09

Us Americans may remember k-os from his medium hit “Superstarr Pt. Zero” but he’s a successful hip-hop artist in his native Canada, and so is his co-star on this joint Saukrates. They also get Nelly Furtado in for good measure.

On this joint “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman”, which samples Phantom Planet’s “California” (better known as the theme song from TV show The O.C.), k-os and Sauktrates get their Western American on with their Lil X directed video. It’s all outlaws and Dukes of Hazzard and pretty ladies, but I like the song. k-os then goes into a different song at about 3:15 and loses me, but the visuals are still hot LOL!

      Where has Lil X been!?

k-os’ latest album Yes! drops tomorrow stateside, so pick it up if you’re looking for something different.

What Do We Think About Alice Russell’s “Let Us Be Loving”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 16, 09

OK, ya’ll know I’m all about soulful yt ladies singing the blues authentically, right? A reader sent this in, which he spotted over at SoulBounce — a UK soul singer named Alice Russell. Homegirl is giving me an Anastacia-meets-Cyndi-Lauper vibe and I’m loving it.

I want to hear her do a song with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings…how dope would that be?!

Alice Russell is a Brighton-born UK soul singer though whose influences run the gamut from Aretha to Stevie to gospel, jazz and funk. I’m loving her work as I’ve been trolling around her website today.

Check out a live clip of her doing “Let Us Be Loving” and also a clip of her popular cover of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”. What do you think of this soulful gem from the UK?

New Music: Robin Thicke, Mary J. Blige, The Noisettes, Leona Lewis & Tha Boogie

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Oct 12, 09

Robin Thicke – “Sex Therapy” [Listen + Download]

Polow Da Don channels his inner Prince and recent “Promise”/Ciara-like sounds to come up with this new Robin Thicke sung track. Dude’s falsetto is killer though, no denying that. It’s a sexy joint to put on your “get the drawz” mixtape, no doubt. I like Robin, always have, but that last album was a bit of a disappointment to me. We will see what happens on his new joint of his, which is as of yet untitled  but was slated to drop 4th Quarter 2009. We’re ready!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Mary J. Blige – “Skycap” Feat. Timbaland [Listen + Download]

OK, I get the angle Mary was going for but wow, #FAIL. LOL, this ain’t even catchy. The beat neither the song really, but the lyrics are especially a fail. Timbaland…phoned this one in. This is supposedly left off of the Growing Pains sessions, and I see why. Mary vocally sounds great though. The monotone nature of this track does well with her vocals LOL.

      More after the jump…

What Do We Think About: Erik Hassle’s “Hurtful”?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 8, 09

Erik Hassle is a new artist from Sweden and is just about to launch here Stateside, with his first single “Hurtful”.

This song is a melodic yet melancholy mix of emotions and soaring vocals that really hits you hard. Throw in some great vocals from the 20-year old Hassle, and you can see where his soul comes from. He really kicks it into gear around the 2:15 second mark.

With influences like Wilson Pickett and other soulful acts, Hassle, who hails from a tiny isolated village in Sweden, has got his first hit in the UK and is now looking to expand to the States. His debut album Pieces drops here in the States on November 24th. I’m feeling this joint and have been playing it repeatedly since it first came across my desk.

His looks are a little off-putting once you see him singing, red hair and all, but close your eyes and let the blue-eyed soul-ish vibe kind of take you away LOL. A little more light than a Sam Sparro, but a little more tuneful than a Daniel Merriweather. What ya’ll think?
