  • Coverage: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Have The “Inner City Blues”, Too.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 27, 12

Yooooo, I’ve been a fan of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour for a while. The Danish group is soulful, funky, and I’ve enjoyed their album Fruit for a couple of months now. Despite the fact that it’s been out for a couple of years, LOL.

SOMEHOW I missed this cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” though. For whatever reason now, I can’t stop spinning it. I grabbed a video of a live performance they did in France of this song, and it goes just as hard as their recorded version.

It’s amazing how soul and it’s messages travel and translate across the world. I think this cover does the original justice. Who knew that Danes even had “inner cities”? And why are ALL the international groups these days doing “soul music” better than the country that originated it? Something to think about…

Coverage: Dirty Loops Drives Adele Into The “Deep” End Of Churchy Soul With This Remake

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

I’ve heard of Dirty Loops on a couple of occasions and peeped one of their earlier covers of Britney Spears‘ “Circus” when it came out. However, their cover of “Rolling In The Deep” dropped today, and phew, is it a doozy.

If you are familiar with Gospel music, then this cover isn’t anything THAT crazy, but what does remain is that the vocalist in Dirty Loops has crazy range, and his voice while doing riffs has a tendency to sound a bit like Stevie Wonder in my opinion.

And does he EVER riff?! Phew! Some of his musical vocal combinations and choices of what notes to run up & down the scales are crazy.

    Also, give the drummer some.

That being said, they tend to do a little bit too much, but they are definitely talented musicians. I like the way they flipped this. But if you go to a Black church jam session, aka, a “shed”, then this will definitely sound like something you’ve had before. It’s just a bit more jarring because it’s some white guys from Sweden. Lead singer Jonah grew up in church however, and I don’t know how they are churching in Sweden, but it DEFINITELY sounds similar to how we church in the United States. Just saying. Check out their website.

Explore Music: “You Know You Like” AlunaGeorge

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

AlunaGeorge hit Pitchfork yesterday, and I’ve already digested and figured out that the best song in my opinion thus far that they’ve released is definitely the sultry, slithery funk that is “You Know You Like It”.

Aluna Francis’ tentative voice mixed with her Brit accent and light but agile voice are what make this track standout, and George Reid’s track channels the funk of yore mixed with an airy, electronic and sub-bass heavy sound that writhes up and down your spine.

AlunaGeorge got their start randomly making music, and they have a new EP hitting shelves as well. This video though reminds me of Kimbra (especially in the above video) meets Beverley Knight. And Robyn. And they had a electro R&B baby. They got their start off as friends making music for fun on their MacBook, only to realize that they’re actually kind of good at it. Rags to riches!

What do you all think of AlunaGeorge? Check out their latest song “Just A Touch” from their EP of the same name as the video above, due out today, below:

Explore Music: Jai Paul’s “Jasmine” Is An Aural Trip Through A Rubberband-Soul Alternative Universe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 9, 12

You’ve probably never heard of Jai Paul. If you’ve heard Beyonce’s “End of Time”, then you’ve heard of Jai Paul. His song “BTSU” was sampled for the intro of that song — specifically the “don’t f**k with me” line. So if you thought you did hear the f-bomb at the beginning of the song — you did!

Jai Paul is an elusive beatsmith and creator, but the two songs he has released have been AMAZING. Even “Jasmine” is tagged as a “demo” officially for whatever reason. But the slinky soul, funky, hand-clapped menagerie of melody that is this song is undeniable. The vibe seeps into your psyche and you find yourself wanting to hit repeat and run it back.

Jai Paul’s vocals are light and nimble but laced in old soul and new sensibilities. It both counteracts and melds into the track, with just enough tentativeness to draw you in even more, listen upon listen.

I’m hoping he’ll release material more often, but “Jasmine” is a dope a** song, and you need to get up on this immediately.

Missing Justin Timberlake, The Singer? Well, Insert Replacements Here: Conor Maynard & Justin Bieber

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 27, 12

I see people on Twitter lamenting all the time about how “they miss Justin Timberlake” making music. Could he be pushed out of the way by the acts below?

First up is a UK sensation now poised for stardom here in the States, Conor Maynard. Conor’s being touted as the “next Justin Timberlake“, and while he may have the urban production caliber to make that boast, does he have the chops and swagger of Justin?

My opinion on Conor is that his voice is a cool mix of Robin Thicke meets Justin Timberlake, though I’m not sure if he will be huge here. The kids should like this though, and with the help of heavyweights such as Pharrell (who also worked with Justin Timberlake…) and Ne-Yo, and his debut single due out April 16th, we shall see how and if it skyrockets to popularity here in the US. He, like Justin Bieber, was signed off the strength of his YouTube covers, which to date have about 55 million views. The Brits have been taking over the US airways (mostly due to Adele), but can a younger Brit star sway the teenybopper group away from such fare as Chris Brown and Rihanna’s dueling duet singles?

Speaking of Justin Bieber, his voice has dropped, and he’s using such words as “swag” and lowkey rapping on his new joint “Boyfriend”. He also seems to be going for a more urban vibe on his upcoming release, and if “Boyfriend” is any example of what we have to look forward to — whoa. Not much singing. Much more talk rapping. Interesting. Justin Bieber seems to channel the feel of N*Sync’s “Gone” into an urban heater of sorts, if you follow me. His new album Believe is out later this year. And allegedly, he’s tapped Timbaland and a host of other urban producers, further giving weight to my suppositions above…

BOTH of these songs sound similar, and really, these two acts could be interchangeable. All that to say, I miss Justin Timberlake as an R&B artist. Despite the Janet debacle, and his terrible movies, dude made good albums. Is this the next generation as the stars get older and transition out of the music business? Thoughts?

Explore Music: Nneka’s “Home” Is Where Relief And Hope Lie

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 12, 12

I’ve been aware of Nneka for a while, but her new record is creating a lot of buzz for her, and I may have to not only finally find sometime to check it out, but to also delve into the rest of her catalog as an artist. Her penchant for political, poignant, pop-soul tunes is a far cry from some other “political” artists such as M.I.A. Nneka’s blend of vocal ferocity and lyrical muster really do hit home immediately, and the visual for “My Home” is just another shining example of this.

Nneka’s “My Home” video illustrates that no matter what your walk in life, we all seek release and have to keep hope alive. From the boardrooms to the slums to beyond, something keeps us going. Nneka talks about hers here. The song is great, I hit repeat a couple of times, and it’s enough to make me want more of Nneka. Her album Soul Is Heavy is out now, and this is the 3rd single from it.

Coverage: Daley Feels “Like A Virgin” + “Alone Together” Duet Video Premieres

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 23, 12

Daley is the voice of The Gorillaz’ “Doncamatic”, and he’s also put out a mixtape that I am really enjoying called “Those Who Wait”. You can cop his mixtape on his website here.

He also has a FANTASTIC DUET on there with Marsha Ambrosius called “Alone Together” that I haven’t stopped playing since I initially heard it, despite my general distaste of Ms. Ex-Floetry. She always shines in duets to me though.

Daley takes on Madonna’s classic with much aplomb however and I don’t hate his cover at all. What do y’all think? He sings it higher than Madonna, that’s for damn sure LOL!

Peep the video for “Alone Together” as well after the jump.

New Music: Sam Sparro Goes Swimming In “The Shallow End”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 1, 12

Sam Sparro’s producer Jesse Rogg tweeted a new “behind the scenes” of the making of Sam Sparro’s new album (allegedly titled Return To Paradise) today, and it features the new track “The Shallow End”. It features Sam’s trademark vocals laced with some kicking drums, an uptempo 4/4 beat and the usual catchy hooks of Sam’s music.

I’ve been missing me some Sam Sparro and the Australian music artist’s hit “Black & Gold” as well as his album still get heavy rotation to me.

Sam’s music seems to have evolved a bit but still borders on FUNKY and JAMMING. So much so that I didn’t even have time to listen to the lyrics — maybe later. I’m too busy jamming right now.

    What do y’all think?

Explore Music: Louisiana Meets The UK Meets Soul X Hip-Hop In Mark Ronson’s “A La Modeliste”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 18, 12

The Re:Generation project, sponsored by the Hyundai Veloster campaign, got a bunch of DJ’s (DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, etc.) to reinterpret different genres of musc In this particular clip, Mark Ronson steps up to the plate, pulling in Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), backed by The Dap-Kings, Trombone Shorty and New Orleans’ Zigaboo Modeliste for the cut “A La Modeliste.” Get into this jam session with Lady Badu. I think it’s hilarious that music is being sponsored by car companies and ads and being driven by non-traditional sources like labels and the like. But hey, as long as the music is getting made, I’m not THAT mad.

Explore Music: Coldplay’s Swelling Strings and Soaring Vocals Will Send You To “Paradise”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Oct 25, 11

Coldplay‘s official first single “Paradise” from their new album Mylo Xyloto is one of those songs that kicks in and takes you right away. “Paradise” has a sense of majesty that sweeps you away from the opening strings to the building drums that marry to emotive vocals and a brilliant melody. In other words, this is my kind of tune.

The video seems like the journey to find where you belong. Chris Martin walks, dances and rides a unicycle – wearing an elephant suit, no less – to find something that matters. At his bleakest junction, he finds his musical companions – three other elephants playing instruments. From there, they go to play at large stadiums to even largre crowds, while remembering the journey that brought them there.

Am I over-analyzing this video? Probably. But something about the song and theme really works for me at this point in my life. Hopefully, you all will find something relatable in it too. Mylo Xyloto is in stores on October 24, 2011.
