    • What Do We Think: The Preatures Ask “Is This How You Feel?”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 9, 13

      preatures

Discovered this lovely track by new Australian band from Sydney called The Preatures, and they describe themselves as a “Gothic Soul / rock and roll band”, according to their Tumblr.

“Is This How You Feel?” is an easily enjoyable song, that features a nice pocket rhythmically, a relaxed and effortless vocal by female vocalist Isabella Manfredi, some great harmonies and some excellent guitar work. I look forward to hearing more from The Preatures. They have an EP out now as well, called Shaking Hands, which is available here.

Thoughts? I thought this was a great find and wanted to share it with my fam!

What Do We Think: Short Stories Drop A Gem “On The Way” To A Growing Partnership

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 13

One of my favorite producers from the UK, Sampha (SBTRKT, Jessie Ware), has partnered with producer Koreless (Jacques Greene) to form the experimental duo Short Stories. They dropped the single “Let It Go” with a B-side song called “On The Way”, and that’s the visual that we are being treated to above.

The video is pretty much a straight-ahead affair, featuring child actors as the younger dopplegangers of Koreless and Sampha, playing instruments and cavorting about in balloons with flying instruments headed towards them as well.

However, it’s not about the visual. It’s really about the vibe of the song. The downtempo electro affair is perfect, and is similar of what the two have done with the others talent that they have worked with. It may not be your cup of tea, but give it a spin. Don’t let the video dissuade you from listening to something new. The UK has been really killing the past few years, and I’m a huge fan of SBTRKT. What do you think?

Watch As James Blake’s “Retrograde” Is The Soundtrack To Earth’s Destruction

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 14, 13

I love James Blake, and man, this new record of his is KILLER aurally. I am THOROUGHLY enjoying it.

I won’t lie and act like I totally understand what is going on in this video — end of the world? Aliens? Biker aliens? — but the visual itself is dark and a bit haunting (and matches the song).

James Blake’s last album was a favorite. Sometimes you have to find the song that fits your mood and that clicks with you at that moment, but with “Retrograde”, I can listen to this anytime. It feels a bit more accessible than the tunes from his last eponymous album. His new body of work Overgrown drops in April, and I’m looking forward to it.

I honestly cannot stop listening to “Retrograde” and I think you won’t be able to either after this first spin. Let me know if I’m wrong.

These darn Brits are taking over!

Explore Music: Lianne La Havas Proves That Love’s Timeline Isn’t The Same As Ours With “Age”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Oct 18, 12

I love Lianne La Havas, and I’m a little late to the party, but I’m definitely glad I came.

Her excellent album Is Your Love Big Enough? is one that you definitely need to pick up. She was nominated for a Mercury Prize for her debut album, and hailing from the UK, she’s once again another example of how the Brits are still crushing  us in recent memory on the Soul music tip.

“Age” is an album cut from Is Your Love Big Enough? and there’s no reverse-cougarism going on here — or is there? My interpretation of this video and song is almost that of a 2012 “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” — Lianne’s dated younger men, but the older men just know how to love you a different way, and it’s not even sexual. It’s a beautiful song and video from a similarly beautiful singer and artist.

Check this out and let me know what you think of Lianne’s latest single!

Explore Music: Disco In 2012? “Holding You Tight” Is A Sure Thing

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 18, 12

Found this nu-disco boogie jam a while back on the Internet and had to bookmark it. I, am an old soul when it comes to music. I love all the old styles of music in addition to the new styles. Disco ranks high on my list of likes.

So imagine my surprise awhile ago when I found that not only is disco revived in the genre branded “nu-disco”, but also that people were making hella funky jams like this! Sure Thing is the name, and they’re a supergroup of sorts from the UK. It features 3 bass DJ’s who’ve come together to craft funky jams sporadically such as “Holding You Tight”.

This classically flavored video reminiscent of the era in which disco had its halcyon days is awesome. The music is awesome. If you don’t like disco, this ain’t for you.

DJ Die, Christophe, Desi Rogers, Joker, William Cartwright, rounded off by some sultry vocals from Chloé Lang — get into this joint, and let me know what you think!

AlunaGeorge’s “Your Drums, Your Love” Is A Dope, Dope Visual & Song

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 25, 12

One of my favorite UK groups that I’ve posted up before, AlunaGeorge, has a new song & video out that they premiered over at Nowness today.

      I love this.

The video is dope, with the pop-locking in time to the song’s staccato timing. The monochromatic fashions and art by artist Arran Gregory. The lighting. The song. It works for me! AlunaGeorge is dope, and I cannot wait for them to drop their full length album, which is as yet untitled and is getting the finishing touches put on it.

I also posted about their dope song “You Know You Like It” here as well. Check that out.

When I tell y’all the UK is killing us…

Heather Headley Takes The Stage In Teasers For “The Bodyguard” Musical In London

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 6, 12

As you may have heard, they are doing a stage version of the Whitney Houston classic “The Bodyguard” in London, featuring R&B singer/Broadway actress Heather Headley as the iconic Whitney Houston.

It’ll feature the classic songs from The Bodyguard soundtrack, as well as other notable Whitney Houston songs. We’ve been treated above to a teaser of Heather Headley singing the always iconic “I Will Always Love You”. Do you think Heather has the vocal chops to pull this off? If this came Stateside, would you go see it? I’m not surprised at the key changes (because Whitney was in the rafters), but does that change the impact of the songs?

It officially opens December 5th at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End. After the jump, catch the teaser of Heather singing “I Have Nothing”.

Daley Aims To Not Be An Afterthought With “Remember Me”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Sep 6, 12

One of my favorite UK soul singers, Daley, has finally dropped a new tune! After his excellent (but free) project Those Who Wait, the world was wondering when we’d hear from Daley next. Well, Daley got a record deal with Polydor, and this is the first release from his upcoming project on his new label home.

While I like “Remember Me”, it feels a bit more processed and targeted than the organic sound that permeated throughout the tracks of Those Who Wait. The addition of Jessie J definitely gives it some pop sheen, but yet and still, her addition feels like an afterthought. It definitely doesn’t hold a candle to his duet with Marsha Ambrosius, though really, Jessie J is really only relegated to the background vox on this joint.

In any case, it’s a synth-ed out funky groove that shines more light on Daley’s range, and I can support that. All the real R&B these days seems to be coming from the UK. Your thoughts?

Explore Music: This New Noisettes Song Is Definitely A “Winner”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 20, 12

Another one of my favorites from across the pond, The Noisettes have dropped a new single in support of London hosting the 2012 Olympics and it’s aptly titled “Winner”.

It was supposed to be the first single off their new album Contact which drops August 27th, but I guess they decided to drop it for free, much to my approval! “Winner” is a raucous, uptempo stomper, and Shingai’s voice shines still no matter what the instrumental may be. It’s a rollicking romp into Brit-soul with tinges of soul, R&B and a hint of the current electro craze (though that’s mostly just guitar!).

The video is full of laughs in my opinion, what with Shingai’s hat, but it still clearly shows that this song is prime for Olympic promo.

You can cop the free download as well if you like their Facebook page. To do that, click this link!

Explore Music: The xx Slow Dance With “Angels”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 16, 12

The xx are a trio from London directly influenced by Sade, Everything But the Girl and many contemporary sounds coming from London’s eclectic music scene. I first heard the xx in 2009 and their self-titled debut was a breakthrough set full of hauntingly romantic songs set to electronic drum arrangements from Jamie xx.

The xx returns with “Angels”, the opening track from their long awaited new album Coexist, due September 11th on Young Turks. The xx’s Romy Madley Croft’s vocals on “Angels” are just as arresting as they were on the band’s debut, and the lush musical arrangement will leave you yearning for more.

The lyrics spell out feelings so intimate, you’re filled with the warmth of a summer’s romance in full bloom. Jamie xx’s haunting drums slide across the passionate soundscape, setting the tone for what sound be another amazing effort from the Mercury Prize winning band. Listen for yourself and prepare for what will be one of the most celebrated albums of the year.

You will also have a chance to see the xx live across North America starting this month in Los Angeles on July 23rd. If you purchase tickets to most of the thirty-one tour dates on their schedule, you will also receive a free download of their new album.
