    • Janelle Monáe & Erykah Badu Team Up To Show Their Girl Power With “Q.U.E.E.N.”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 22, 13

      Download: Janelle-Monae-Q.U.E.E.N.-Feat.-Erykah-Badu.mp3

Janelle Monáe advances her funky sound to the next level with the added influence and bonus of the one and only Erykah Badu to her new single “Q.U.E.E.N.”

True fans of Janelle’s have no doubt been waiting to hear what her next musical outing would be like — and while it’s decidedly still funky, it’s taken a more of a tilted funk with the music bed that is “Q.U.E.E.N.”, and she’s also added more rapping to her repetoire (though she’s done it before on remixes and things). This song is full of guitars, tambourines, and synths. It’s as if Janelle has had a religious experience with some 80′s girl group sass, Prince & New Power Generation funk, with a dash of Nona Hendryx and Eryakah Badu thrown in for good measure.

Not to mention the vocal is still showing that Janelle packs a lot of voice into that petite body of hers.

Do you like “Q.U.E.E.N.”? What about that cover art?! Two of my favorite artists on one track is more than what I bargained for. My body is ready.

BJ The Chicago Kid Demands Nothing But The Best With “Good Luv’n”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 2, 12

BJ The Chicago Kid – “Good Luv’n”

I’ve been up on BJ The Chicago Kid for awhile. He’s worked with some friends of mine, and his album/mixtape Pineapple Now-Laters was pretty good — and this song was also on that project.

However, now that BJ has signed to Motown, “Good Luv’n” has been serviced as his first single, and I absolutely love this song. The things Mr. Chicago Kid does with his voice are pretty dope, and in terms of actual SINGERS out right now, BJ is in a class of his own, skill-wise. Producers David Haddon & Jairus Mozee create a track that wafts gently yet firmly under BJ’s vocal, and one that doesn’t overpower or draw the attention away from his voice either. BJ’s voice sounds pretty effortless over this jawn. It’s almost like Bilal, Faith Evans and Al Green had a baby.

I saw him live months ago in LA, and he’s equally as talented live, so if you get the chance to check him out.

Go cop this download, or add it to a playlist on your Spotify. Whatever you do, support good singing! Stream it from Spotify after the jump as well.

Live Performances: Kimbra Further Entrenches Herself “Into My Head” With This KCRW Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 12

I’ve been loving Kimbra’s “Call Me” since I posted it a while back and since the album came out in the States. I gleaned her international release Vows when it came out previously as well. I’d heard “Come Into My Head” was pleasantly surprised at some of the musical changes and just the amazingness of Kimbra’s talent as well.

So when the US album came out, it was definitely one of the first songs that I spun aside from “Call Me”. Kimbra took to KCRW’s popular show “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and did a riveting performance of this song. I mean, Kimbra is SO great to me. She sings this song with so much fervor and passion. She plays tambourine. She interacts with the band. The changes! The chords! The musicians! Everything about this performance just made me a bigger fan.

If you haven’t checked out Vows, please do Kimbra’s brand of international soul/pop is way more musical and interesting than most stuff that Americans are putting out. I guarantee it.

And any chick that plays tambourine is A-OK in my books.
