  • Big K.R.I.T. Has Definitely “Got This” Hip-Hop Thing On Lock

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 7, 12

One of my favorite joints from Big K.R.I.T., and it’s also the first single from his upcoming album Live From The Underground, which drops June 5th. “I Got This” was released as a free download back in March, and I extolled its virtues on Twitter at the time, and wore it out.

K.R.I.T. reminds me of an up-and-coming early version of David Banner, as he both writes and produces his own music and also for others as well. Both hail from Mississippi, and both seem to be more cognizant of the social implications of hip-hop.

“I Got This” has a refrain that is left off the clean version in the video above, but really gives the song its “oomph” in my opinion, LOL. The video features a characteristically old-school feel about the visual treatment, and it matches the Dirty South origins of the rapper himself. There’s some significance to the numbers that keep popping up on the screen as well — can you figure it out?

I like K.R.I.T. (which stands for King Remembered In Time), and I’m all for folks who not only rap but created their own soundscapes as well. I’m excited about his album, and am definitely looking forward to it.

Explore Music: “You Know You Like” AlunaGeorge

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

AlunaGeorge hit Pitchfork yesterday, and I’ve already digested and figured out that the best song in my opinion thus far that they’ve released is definitely the sultry, slithery funk that is “You Know You Like It”.

Aluna Francis’ tentative voice mixed with her Brit accent and light but agile voice are what make this track standout, and George Reid’s track channels the funk of yore mixed with an airy, electronic and sub-bass heavy sound that writhes up and down your spine.

AlunaGeorge got their start randomly making music, and they have a new EP hitting shelves as well. This video though reminds me of Kimbra (especially in the above video) meets Beverley Knight. And Robyn. And they had a electro R&B baby. They got their start off as friends making music for fun on their MacBook, only to realize that they’re actually kind of good at it. Rags to riches!

What do you all think of AlunaGeorge? Check out their latest song “Just A Touch” from their EP of the same name as the video above, due out today, below:

Stacy Barthe Makes A One Night Stand Sound Classy And Necessary On “No Strings Attached”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 9, 12

Fader has the exclusive on a brand new Stacy Barthe track called “No Strings Attached” that features John Legend and is produced by one of my favorite producers, Supa Dups. With his patented reggae rhythms and soulful tendencies, Supa Dups laces Stacy Barthe with a low key, dark yet poignant banger with smoky vocals from John Legend.

While I’m not the biggest fan of John Legend, my man sounds great on this track. Their voices compliment both the track and each other well, and Stacy Barthe is lethal with a pen. Her material always skewers toward the darker, unspoken sides of relationships that you don’t normally hear tackled on the radio in this current day and age, but it’s a welcome and refreshing balance.

Stacy isn’t a conventional singer, looks-wise or sound-wise, and I think it’ll be a litmus test for how good music fares out over image, pop-stylings, and the like. Adele has had a monster year and she is by no means at all a conventional chart entry by standard industry measurings. Will Stacy win out over the pop tarts and traditional R&B ingenues? Time will tell. Until then, enjoy the sounds taken from her latest EP In The InBetween, and get ready for her 1st solo album PS: I Love You.

New Music: Brandy & Monica Both File Claims With New Joint “It All Belongs To Me”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 7, 12

Guess who’s back in the mutha mutha house? The object of staunch fans affections of female vocalists that are 90′s babies — Monica Vs. Brandy.

Monica’s new album New Life comes out next month, and she’s already stirring up the pot with this debut of a brand new single from the two vocal ingenues that blew up the 90′s radio charts. After “The Boy Is Mine” became a smash hit for the both of them a decade ago, they’ve reteamed as they are both enjoying careers on the up-tick once again (Brandy, especially). However, this time Rico Love handles the boards and they deliver a sure-to-stir-debate smash of a song in the form of “It All Belongs To Me”.

While I think the lyrical depth of the song is severely lacking, it’s not hard to hear that both of these women are singing for their lives in this new joint. “It All Belongs To Me” is nothing more than a song of reclamation aimed towards the dude they were both previously fighting over (so to speak). The music itself isn’t nearly as catchy as the Darkchild-helmed “The Boy Is Mine”, but new fans of the two won’t hate this song, old fans should be able to appreciate the vocal prowess of the two women, and radio should find something to play other than Ke$ha and Adele.

As the age old debate continues as to who is the “better” singer, I’m going to continue to firmly be on Team Brandy. However, Mo’ does some of the best singing I’ve heard from her in a while on this joint. I’d say that singing with Brandy once again made her step her game up — what do you think? With Brandy working on a new joint, there is still another chapter in this saga yet to be revealed, but at the end of the day, we’re all winners because talent is talent and there isn’t enough of it around anymore like there was back in the 90′s…

Tyrese’s Voice Can Pull Up A Chair And “Stay” As Long As It Wants

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 20, 11

Tyrese, he who has alienated countless scores of fans via his fumblings through the digital world via Twitter and otherwise, has FINALLY dropped new MUSIC.

    *slow clap*

I’ve always been a fan of Tyrese’s music and voice, minus his whole Black Ty phase. We won’t mention that again. “Stay” is the first single dropping from his new album Open Invitation, which drops on the iconic date of 11/1/11.

The video for “Stay” also reunites the two Baby Boy stars, as it features leading lady Taraji P. Henson as his girlfriend, and the one who is he is convincing to stay. For Tyrese to have been acting as long as he has been, this dialogue is a little wooden and stiff, even though there’s only about 5 lines. LOL.

The song, however…YES. I like the classic sound mixed with Tyrese’s swagger. It kind of gives me a hint of R. Kelly’s last album Love Letter. Tyrese’s singing is better and more natural than his acting thankfully, and he delivers this song perfectly. A few more listens and I’m sure it’ll grow on me even more. It charges me up to put his online persona behind me and get into his music, and that’s what I’ve been waiting a really long time to do.

Jill Scott Shines Beyond Measure With “Hear My Call” Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 24, 11

This woman. NO ONE emotes and vocalizes like Jill Scott does these days.

This gives me shades of Diana Ross (singing “Home” in ‘The Wiz’) and just so many other vibrant performers and legends. While I am STILL trying to get into The Light Of The Sun, after her performance of this song on BET’s Sunday Best, and this awesome video, whether or not I get into the album, I can recognize the place that her music comes from. Whether or not she is acting or if this is genuine, it’s still great. That’s my opinion and I am sticking to it. A better video couldn’t have been made  for this song.

“Awkward Black Girl” Sets A New High For Web Series

Written by Donovan in Blogs on Aug 11, 11

In a break from music, please check out this relatively new web series from Issa Rae titled “Awkward Black Girl”. The premise is that we get to watch one awkward black girl go through the trials and tribulations of life. What really makes this series great is the way it poignantly deals with those awkward moments we all encounter (i.e. waving back at someone who isn’t waving at you, continuously running into someone you don’t like). It’s probably the most fun and entertaining piece on the web that wasn’t created on accident. Check out Episode 7 where ABG Jay goes on her first interracial date with White Jay which turns out not to be Dyno-mite! Watch the show, you’ll get it. I posted this one as it is the most current but I would watch it from the beginning and watch the evolution of something great. So readers, what do we think?

Nikka Costa’s New Funky Joints Have Caused A Rip In Her “Nylons”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 13, 11

Nikka Costa has released a new EP that’s available on iTunes NOW called Pro*Whoa! and I took the opportunity to listen to it earlier this week and I thought it was just as funky and well-produced as her other releases. It features 6 songs which run the gamut from rock to funk and back. Nikka’s voice is still as top-notch as ever, and “Nylons In A Rip” was one of my favorites any way, so I am glad to see a visual from it pop up today!

It’s pretty much a live performance clip; however, it shows that Nikka definitely lives what she sings about. The band gets in on the fun, shredding and jamming right along with her!

If you’re a Nikka fan (like me!), it’s a welcome return. You can cop the project over on iTunes here, and Nikka is on tour, so check out her Facebook to see if she’s coming to a city near you!

Alice Russell Is Still Funky During A “Breakdown”

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jul 1, 11

Ugh, Alice Russell is so filthy with it! Her band is sick too! I spotted this video over at SoulBounce and you may remember hearing about Russell here quite a while ago. In this video, we have the pleasure of getting front row seats to a live performance of the song “Breakdown” which is rumored to be on her upcoming LP.

The IPS and I share a love for yt soul, especially when it comes from powerful belters such as Alice Russell. This song is no different as it combines the powers of British soul with the funky tremble of a church organ lifted by Russell’s emotive vocals. A sheer winner! I for one can’t wait for a new album. Pot of Gold is still in rotation over here.

Sidenote: Please get to the 2 minute mark where she absolutely takes it to churh! That’s real soul right there!
