    • Kendrick Lamar Takes His Freestyle Out The Backseat And To Paris With New Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 2, 13

One of my favorite rap albums in a while and of 2012 was Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. It has characters, a story, a thesis, a denouement, everything. A great album, with some great musical beds, rich dynamics and an all around solid debut album from an artist that transferred his internet buzz into a viable, critically acclaimed album.

One of my favorite tracks from the album is the Hit-Boy produced “Backseat Freestyle” track and it’s got a globe-trotting video, to boot. From the streets and his home in Compton (presumably), to the Eiffel Tower in Paris (in which he references during the course of the track numerous times), Kendrick Lamar’s visual works surprisingly well with this song. My initial thought was “How are they going to put a video to this freestyle track?”, but they pulled it off. Even threw in a little bit of classic hip-hop vixen ass shaking for about a good 30 seconds, LOL. Allegedly, the vixen has been labeled as Sherane — she who recurs numerous times throughout the CD as a type of love interest and foil for Kendrick as well.

Also, for a bit of comedic relief, if you’ve listened to the album, you’ve heard the skits with his parents. They also make an appearance in the video as well!

Still loving this CD, and this visual is ok with me.

Did you like the CD? This song? Chime in below!

What Do We Think: Watch The Duck Get It “Poppin’ Off” With Their Blend Of Dub Step & Trap Rap

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 10, 12

Do you like dub step? Well, coming out of ATL (by way of Montgomery, AL) is a new group of 3 DJ’s/instrumentalists called Watch The Duck (Jessie Rankins, Eddie Smith & Jonathan Wells). They call their music “trap step” — trap rap + dub step mixed together. I’ve also heard it called soul dub step. In any case, it’s fairly interesting.

Take some simple, dumbed down dub step progressions, add some James Brown posturing with the vocals, throw in some popping and locking, and you have the “Poppin’ Off” video that you see above. In my mind, it’s like Outkast, James Brown and Soulja Boy had a illicit affair with Skrillex.

Though not the most musically invigorating or innovative thing ever, I think it’s an interesting union of different styles. Dub step as a whole has become homogenized and mainstreamed (as well as “trap” music), but I for one would have never really thought to put them together. It’s ultimately not that big of a stretch, and kind of works on some levels.

Gotta give it Watch The Duck for this one — I wonder how far outside of the Georgia state line this will progress. If you’re intrigued, you can listen to their mixtape Rub-A-Dub (which they say is R&B + dub step = Rub-A-Dub) on SoundCloud here. And also check their official website. Tell them Tha Feedback sent you!

Nas Releases The Final Emotional Vestiges Of His Divorce With “Bye Baby” Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 30, 12

I feel like Nas is a gentleman and has handled his emotional baggage pretty well with “Bye Baby”. It’s the latest single from his superb album Life Is Good, and while the track samples Guy’s “Goodbye Love”, lead vocalist on the track Aaron Hall ALSO makes an appearance in the video, along with a cadre of young black actors and others.

I just connected that the dress on his lap on the cover must be a replica of Kelis’ wedding dress. Crazy.

“Bye Baby” features Nas’ excellent storytelling skills in the front and center, giving us an intimate look into how his seemingly storybook romance dissolved into unwedded non-bliss. It’s also a cautionary tale of others who don’t take the risk of falling in love, with Nas calling folks out on still living in their mother’s basement. It’s one of my favorite tracks from the album, and also seems to be a fan favorite, and I’m glad they put out a visual from it.

Nas’ latest album is one of the best hip-hop joints out this year, and when I try to listen to other hip-hop releases, I always drift back to Life Is Good…

      Check out Guy’s “Goodbye Love”:

Murs Turns An In-N-Out Burger Style Into A Powerful Musical Soliloquy About Homophobia

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 11, 12

Wow, this video was an unexpectedly potent visual that gazes deep into the stereotypes of hip-hop and homophobia. Hip-hop artist Murs takes on this topic with a powerfully moving video about how two men from different sides of the tracks fall in love and out of the living world because of their respective fears and worries about loving another man.

With much hullabaloo about Frank Ocean “coming out” (and in my opinion, being mislabeled as a “hip-hop” artist due to his affiliation with Odd Future), the real attention should be turned to Murs, who is in FACT, an actual hip-hop artist.

I watched this and was definitely dialed in as Murs interspersed a solo performance in front a camera with a fictionalized account of what he was rapping about. Kudos to him for not only writing, recording, and releasing this song, but actually placing himself in a situation of acting in the video as well.

      His statement says a lot:

“Animal Style is a song I did for many reasons,” Murs explains. “The first was to be an advocate for people close to me who are out, and those who have yet to come out. It’s also a love song, which is nothing new for me. But with this one I wanted to challenge the listener to ask themselves: Is the love shared by two people of the same gender, really that different than the love I have for my partner of the opposite sex? And finally, I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture. I felt so strongly about these issues and this song that I had to do a video that would command some attention, even if it makes some viewers uncomfortable. Even if it came at the cost of my own comfort.”

What do you think of this video? Would love to hear your thoughts! It’s taken from his latest project Love & Rockets Volume 1: The Transformation. If you like, support indie artists!

Indie Tuesday: It’s Not “Peculiar” At All That Oddisee Has Flipped This Marvin Gaye Sample Into Something Dope

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 5, 12

Taken from Oddisee’s Odd Renditions, Vol. 001, hip-hop emcee/producer/swiss army knife Oddisee has flipped the seminal Marvin Gaye jam “Ain’t That Peculiar” into a smoldering, soul-laced jam that expertly plays upon Marvin’s voice and Oddisee’s rhymes. This jam goes. I’ve been listening to it for a while, only to find out that he actually selling it along with three other songs that he’s flipped well as well. Three songs that you’ve probably never heard of even: Bon Iver’s “Paralyzed”, Metronomy’s “The Gold Is Mine”, and K-Os’s “Man I Used To Be”. Listen to the track below, and check out the trippy but well done video after the jump!

BTW, if you like this (and I am pretty sure  you will!), Oddisee’s has dropped a new album today called People Here What They See. I haven’t had the chance to listen to it yet, but you can hit up this link to listen to it in its entirety, and if you like, be sure to cop!

Explore Music; Macklemore’s Video And Introspective Lifts My Opinion Of Him Higher Via “Wings”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 9, 11

Macklemore is a Seattle, WA MC who has taken his hometown crafted and street approved brand of social rap to a national level, and especially due to this excellent video for his song “Wings”. It talks about the banality and ultimately uselessness of the chasing of things — in this case, Air Jordans and their related ilk. How many people were hurt and or killed growing up in the 90′s for their Starter jackets, Jordans, etc? This was a common thing when I was growing up.

Macklemore’s music and visuals hit hard, and it offers a welcome dichotomy to the current craze that is sweeping the Internet — the release of Jay-Z’s and Kanye West’s album Watch The Throne in my opinion.

Macklemore and director Zia Mohajerjasbi created a website that tracked the creation of this video, and if you want more info about Macklemore, hit up his Facebook page.

Classic Flashback: Brand Nubian – “Slow Down”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Aug 5, 11

SLOW DOWN! I loved this Brand Nubian song. I remember Intro sampled it for their “Love Thang” song too, which I loved.

This song has so many quotable lines that apply even to this day. For real. I particularly was partial to Lord Jamar’s and Grand Puba’s verses more.

This was that good ole’ socially aware hip-hop but it was so smooth and jammin’ you barely knew it.

One day Sadat X tweeted me. I about died. It was SO random, ya know? Gotta love Twitter.

Explore Music: Dee-1 Waxes On About The “One That Got Away”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 2, 11

I just heard of this guy and apparently he used to be a teacher amongst other things, but has since left his career in education to be a full-time musician and artist. He put out a mixtape called I Hope They Hear Me, Vol. 1 recently, and this joint is taken from that.

With the help of Mannie Fresh, Dee-1 drops some witty bars and strings together some words pretty well on this joint, and the subject matter is definitely one that we’ve all felt before. What’s funny about this joint is Mannie Fresh’s ad-libs and the little kid with the water gun. LOL. Dee-1′s delivery makes me want to go download his mixtape and see what else he has cooking.

A new voice that has turned in a pretty decent video relatively. I’m all for giving folks a chance. Is Dee-1 singing/rapping your feelings with this song as well?

Do You Want To Right-Click, Select All, And Delete Diggy’s “Copy, Paste”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 2, 11

Maybe I am too old to enjoy this, but for all his talk about being original, this song strikes me as everything but. Diggy Simmons’ “Copy, Paste” is his first official single from his upcoming debut album due out on Atlantic Records soon. “Copy, Paste” is also what he performed on the BET Pre-Awards, and even then, I feel like it didn’t go over too well their either.

Diggy’s lyrics at times seem to disconnect from the general idea he is putting forth in his titles, giving the song a well, copy & pasted feel. Especially the random dance sequence and the singing. However, I’m not a pre-pubescent teen, and if he’s getting his money, then by all means, proceed.

What do y’all think of “Copy, Paste”? Is this the single that will allow Diggy to break out of being famous for being Rev. Run’s son and the massive hit show about his family on MTV, “Run’s House”? Weigh in if you will.

Explore Music: Stalley’s “Pound” Mixes Messages Through Imagery And A Thumping Beat

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 26, 11

I got the chance to see Stalley live a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you, it was a dope show. If you get the chance to see him live, please do. He delivers a short but potent set full of energy, amazingly soulful and bass-laced music, some great lyrics, and an all around well performed set from a relative newbie to the national hip-hop scene. I was very impressed with his energy and aura during the show — it wasn’t overly braggadocious and cliche’ at all. Stalley held his own on stage, and had the crowd captivated with his music. And I’m willing to hedge my bets that it was a whole room full of people that for the most part weren’t familiar with his music at all!

That being said, “Pound” is taken from his latest project Lincoln Way Knights, which I posted previously here for your listening pleasure. It mixes some imagery that causes some serious thoughts on the part of the watcher, and cuts in shots of a very beard-laden Stalley as he raps along to the music. I like how Stalley addresses things that are bit more poignant than the average rapper, taking the time to really focus on some issues on a larger and local scale, in terms of his home state of Ohio.

There’s not much to see besides that, but it’s an interesting visual go with such a beat-heavy song. Check it out and let me know what you think! Does Stalley miss the mark, or is he in a line of mixtape rappers who get record deals (in his case, with Rick Ross‘ Maybach Music Group) in which the end product never holds a candle to their indie/underground releases? Only time will tell…
