    • Explore Music; Macklemore’s Video And Introspective Lifts My Opinion Of Him Higher Via “Wings”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 9, 11

Macklemore is a Seattle, WA MC who has taken his hometown crafted and street approved brand of social rap to a national level, and especially due to this excellent video for his song “Wings”. It talks about the banality and ultimately uselessness of the chasing of things — in this case, Air Jordans and their related ilk. How many people were hurt and or killed growing up in the 90′s for their Starter jackets, Jordans, etc? This was a common thing when I was growing up.

Macklemore’s music and visuals hit hard, and it offers a welcome dichotomy to the current craze that is sweeping the Internet — the release of Jay-Z’s and Kanye West’s album Watch The Throne in my opinion.

Macklemore and director Zia Mohajerjasbi created a website that tracked the creation of this video, and if you want more info about Macklemore, hit up his Facebook page.

Classic Flashback: Brand Nubian – “Slow Down”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Aug 5, 11

SLOW DOWN! I loved this Brand Nubian song. I remember Intro sampled it for their “Love Thang” song too, which I loved.

This song has so many quotable lines that apply even to this day. For real. I particularly was partial to Lord Jamar’s and Grand Puba’s verses more.

This was that good ole’ socially aware hip-hop but it was so smooth and jammin’ you barely knew it.

One day Sadat X tweeted me. I about died. It was SO random, ya know? Gotta love Twitter.

Explore Music: Dee-1 Waxes On About The “One That Got Away”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 2, 11

I just heard of this guy and apparently he used to be a teacher amongst other things, but has since left his career in education to be a full-time musician and artist. He put out a mixtape called I Hope They Hear Me, Vol. 1 recently, and this joint is taken from that.

With the help of Mannie Fresh, Dee-1 drops some witty bars and strings together some words pretty well on this joint, and the subject matter is definitely one that we’ve all felt before. What’s funny about this joint is Mannie Fresh’s ad-libs and the little kid with the water gun. LOL. Dee-1′s delivery makes me want to go download his mixtape and see what else he has cooking.

A new voice that has turned in a pretty decent video relatively. I’m all for giving folks a chance. Is Dee-1 singing/rapping your feelings with this song as well?

Do You Want To Right-Click, Select All, And Delete Diggy’s “Copy, Paste”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 2, 11

Maybe I am too old to enjoy this, but for all his talk about being original, this song strikes me as everything but. Diggy Simmons’ “Copy, Paste” is his first official single from his upcoming debut album due out on Atlantic Records soon. “Copy, Paste” is also what he performed on the BET Pre-Awards, and even then, I feel like it didn’t go over too well their either.

Diggy’s lyrics at times seem to disconnect from the general idea he is putting forth in his titles, giving the song a well, copy & pasted feel. Especially the random dance sequence and the singing. However, I’m not a pre-pubescent teen, and if he’s getting his money, then by all means, proceed.

What do y’all think of “Copy, Paste”? Is this the single that will allow Diggy to break out of being famous for being Rev. Run’s son and the massive hit show about his family on MTV, “Run’s House”? Weigh in if you will.

Explore Music: Stalley’s “Pound” Mixes Messages Through Imagery And A Thumping Beat

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 26, 11

I got the chance to see Stalley live a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you, it was a dope show. If you get the chance to see him live, please do. He delivers a short but potent set full of energy, amazingly soulful and bass-laced music, some great lyrics, and an all around well performed set from a relative newbie to the national hip-hop scene. I was very impressed with his energy and aura during the show — it wasn’t overly braggadocious and cliche’ at all. Stalley held his own on stage, and had the crowd captivated with his music. And I’m willing to hedge my bets that it was a whole room full of people that for the most part weren’t familiar with his music at all!

That being said, “Pound” is taken from his latest project Lincoln Way Knights, which I posted previously here for your listening pleasure. It mixes some imagery that causes some serious thoughts on the part of the watcher, and cuts in shots of a very beard-laden Stalley as he raps along to the music. I like how Stalley addresses things that are bit more poignant than the average rapper, taking the time to really focus on some issues on a larger and local scale, in terms of his home state of Ohio.

There’s not much to see besides that, but it’s an interesting visual go with such a beat-heavy song. Check it out and let me know what you think! Does Stalley miss the mark, or is he in a line of mixtape rappers who get record deals (in his case, with Rick Ross‘ Maybach Music Group) in which the end product never holds a candle to their indie/underground releases? Only time will tell…

FreEP Roundup: Place Your Bets On A-Natural’s “Lucky 8′s” & Stalley’s “Trunk” Thumps…Smartly, Too.

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 30, 11

Once again, one of my personal underground indie favorites, A-Natural, denizen of Natural City and all around dope producer, singer, and songwriter, has put out ANOTHER free joint for us to enjoy and to whet our appetites while we await his first project on the solo tip, Natural City. This mixtape is CRAZY. A-Natural knows his way around his voice, the booth, a beat, and a pad. He takes some of the latest joints and puts his own spin on them, and in my opinion, makes them more bearable.

Stand out joints to me are his version of Swizz Beatz’ “Coolin’” (which has grown on me anyway), his re-do of Katy Perry’s “E.T.”, and his remake of “Marvin’s Room” by Drake (which could have gone over very poorly but doesn’t here at all). All of his versions feel natural with flourishes of his own talent tossed in like grenades here and there to make you realize this dude is talented.

Cop this free download — I’ve sent it to a few people already and they’ve already loved it, though they were already loving his previous joints that I’ve posted here on Tha Feedback too.

Stalley is an artist who I’ve just gotten into, though I’ve seen his considerable buzz for a while. He’s been on his grind for a minute, but this latest free release of his, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) lives up to its title with no sense of shame at all. Immediate favorites are “Slapp” feat. Rashad, “330″, “Assassins” with John Mayer, and “She Hates The Bass”.

Dude has a way with his words, tempered with an honest and realistic look at things the way they are, mixed with some menacing bass and an underbelly of sinister horns throughout. This joint really IS “intelligent trunk music.” Stalley reps Ohio (hence the song 330, an Ohio area code), and if there are more MC’s on the rise from that area with music like this, I’d definitely take a second listen.

Stalley hits my neck of the woods (Portland, OR) next week, and I will definitely be in the house to experience this trunk music thumping in my chest IN PERSON.

Check out his video for his joint “Slapp” too below.

Big Sean Shows Us How To “Do It”, And Do It Big At That

Written by Donovan in Videos on Jun 17, 11

Big Sean is releasing his debut album Finally Famous on June 28, 2011 and the video for his second single “I Do It” has been making some buzz around the net. This was obviously a low budget video and features gratuitous shots of designer clothes, jewelry and strangely enough Sean’s mouth and eyes. That maybe fun for some of you to sit through, but I honestly stopped paying attention to the video and nodded my head to the track.

This track is all about stuntin’ and it does a great job at that featuring a pretty slick beat from No I.D. I definitely enjoyed this track and it makes me want to see what is in store on his album. With so many heavyweights co-signing him, it could end up really good or really bad. So readers, what do we think?

Big K.R.I.T. Is On His “Country Sh*t” With The Assist Of Ludacris & Bun B

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 8, 11

I only got the chance to listen to Big K.R.I.T.’s Returnof4Eva once through, but he definitely has talent is continuing to get bigger and bigger with each new video, single, and co-sign from some of your favorite artists. His music has swept the web and he is amassing fans faster than most would have thought. He’s getting help from the majors as Def Jam is crafting a new digital strategy by releasing “free” music then tag-teaming it shortly after with an EP release via traditional digital outlets.

His new EP R4 The Prequel is at iTunes now and is available to purchase, and the video for the “Country Sh*t” remix is taken from the song that is on that EP.

The video reminds me of some other Southern rappers videos back in the day that we’d see. It’s mostly an expensive tour through a typical southern “hood”, replete with images of cars, BBQ, scantily-clad neighborhood chicks, and of course — rappers with jewelry. But you know, that’s country and that’s how it goes down. A view of something different but it’s really the same.

Luda’s on his grind and Bun B is the vet that’s getting a check, but K.R.I.T. is going for his. Do you like?

When Bad Meets Evil, It’s Easy To Get Caught Up In The “Fast Lane”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 8, 11

Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ have put out the video for their first single from their newly reunited group Bad Meets Evil, the Supa Dups-produced joint “Fast Lane”. I thought the video was done pretty cheaply but well — I liked the interaction with the green-screen effects. I’m sure in an era of belt-tightening that this video pleased the powers-that-be and also got the point across.

Maybe it’s me, but I think I enjoy Royce’s verses more on this joint. He just sounds more hungry and driven than Eminem. Probably because this is his chance to get more mainstream cred, despite him being a member of Slaughterhouse. That being said, I’ve always appreciated Royce’s flow and scheme, and it’s as nimble as ever on this joint.

Their EP Hell: The Sequel drops June 14th. Will you be picking it up based on the strength of this single and clip?

Eminem & Royce da 5’9″ Are Rapping While Driving In The “Fast Lane”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 2, 11

Ay yo, this joint is hot.

So before Royce da 5’9″ was a part of Slaughterhouse, him and Eminem used to rap together back in the day under the name Bad Meets Evil. Drama happened, they fell out, but now they are back together again, especially since Em just signed Slaughterhouse to his imprint. The first official offering from their new EP Bad Meets Evil is here, and it’s a nice joint produced by Supa Dups & Eminem called “Fast Lane”.

The rapping that is being done in this joint is pretty fresh, and it doesn’t hurt that this beat is a knocker. Sounds like old school Timbaland a bit too, if you ask me.

I’ve always been a fan of Royce on the fringe, but this joint right here? Especially around the 2:10 mark. Dude is spitting. And their lines and vibe perfectly bounce off of each other. This joint bodes well for what they have coming up, in my opinion.

      Thoughts?
