    • Explore Music: Let Jesus & Jor’dan Armstrong “Make It Alright”

Jor’dan Armstrong – “Make It Alright”

Get into this sexy Gospel urban R&B soul! Jor’dan Armstrong is killing this joint “Make It Alright”. He’d put out a mixtape called Jesus, Fashion & Beatz that was a nice blending of the themes of basically being a young dude who loves the Lord, Gospel music, and the usual trappings of the mainstream world like R&B, Top 40, Hip-Hop, etc. It took a lot of current musical influences and mixed them with more positive themes in relation to Gospel music — all without being extremely corny.

Jor’dan’s now released his sophomore album Stronger and it’s also a great project, featuring more of the same quality yet urban/cotemporary Gospel jams. “Make It Alright” is a holdover from the mixtape, but this is such a catchy, well-produced song — Gospel or not. It’s been on constant repeat, and even if you don’t like Gospel music, I think you might be suckered into a few repeated listens of this song along with a couple of others.

If you have kids that you want to to stop listening to Lil’ Wayne or Chris Brown, maybe try sliding a few of Stronger‘s album cuts into the rotation. I don’t think they’d be able to tell the difference.

I’m curious to hear what y’all think about this? Too Gospel for you? Not Gospel enough? Let’s talk about it. In any case, this is my jam!

Get the album and the mixtape at Jor’dan site!

(Pastor) Montell Jordan No Longer Shakes His Groove Thang; He Shakes “Heaven”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 3, 11

      I got nothing.

I had heard rumors and rumblings that Montell Jordan had become a man of the cloth, but I never really cared to dig and find out. I’m more than happy being a heathen with my “This Is How We Do It” ringtone, and his forays into Gospel falsetto land with his appearance on the “Fighting Temptations” soundtrack.

Then someone tweeted this track and I just about turned it to VH1 Soul in hopes that they would play the cleansing song that is “Get It On Tonight”. But alas.

Apparently yes, Montell is a Pastor. And yes, he has switched over to the Gospel side. And yes, he still is trying to be sexy…but now it’s for Jesus. Well alright!

I can’t really say what I think about this track — it’s a mix of CCM lyrics with an attempt at a radio-ready beat for today’s hit stations, with lots of bright lights, bad dancing, and faux-secular posturing. Montell takes lead, and even has a cleverly thrown in remembrance to his past life amongst the lyrics. Get into Jesus and get into Montell and get saved. Or not?

Gospel: “Get Down” Means More Than One Thing When Sung By Dawkins & Dawkins

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 5, 11

This video caught me off guard because I was expecting a cheesy Gospel video (which is normally the case), but the storyline/message hit me home. Dawkins & Dawkins are almost unsung legends in the Gospel music arena. Their first few albums were almost classic status, and they coined the term “rhythm and praise”, merging their funky youthful sound with a message still rooted in the Gospel.

They are finally coming out with new music, years and years after their last album dropped. July 26, 2011 is the release date for their album From Now On, and it’s available for pre-order on Amazon right now if you like what you hear!

Coverage: Gospel Duo Mary Mary Cover Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 16, 11

Gospel duo Mary Mary’s latest album Something Big has become their latest opus in their string of hit albums that crossover from the Gospel to the mainstream arena. They’ve pretty much perfected their sound to be Christian centric but Arena aimed. Proving that being a Gospel artist isn’t just being limited to storefront churches and Youtube videos, they take to Billboard for their Mashup Monday series and do their own duet-meets-Gospel-harmony version of Bruno’s “Just The Way You Are”.

They do what a lot of chruch singers that listen to the radio do on their own — add harmony. It’s a nice performance. Thoughts?

After the jump, you can also hear them do an acoustic version of their latest single “Walking” as well.

Mary Mary Are “Walking” Right Into The Annals of Mediocrity With Their Latest Song

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 13, 11

Mary Mary’s new video for their song “Walking” has dropped, and I have to say, I am so underwhelmed by this song. And this video. Just, all of it. It doesn’t excite me in anyway sadly and all I can think about when I hear this is T.I.’s “Why You Wanna”. As much as I tell myself it’s not the same song and I should be fair to them, I just can’t shake it.

There’s a cameo from Terry Kennedy the skateboarder, and also of course producer/husband Warryn Campbell. “Walking” is off their soon to drop release Something Big which hits stores soon!

Gospel: Karen Clark-Sheard Lets Us Know That “He Knows” With Her Sister’s Help

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 2, 11

Two of the most dynamic and iconic vocalists from the dynamic family group The Clark Sisters have teamed up for sister Karen’s latest single “He Knows”. Produced by superstar producer cousin J. Moss, this video is clearly a family affair, in theme, composition, and performance.

Karen’s managed to churn out a very decent Gospel video, both stylistically and in the storyline. Gospel videos tend to look a bit corny and often seem to be low budget, but this one looks classy, and everyone looks great. The song is one of my favorites from her latest album All In One, and follows on the heels of the wildly popular go-go leaning tune “Prayed Up”. A good look for Karen and sister Dorinda Clark-Cole.

New Music From Gospel Heavyweights Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, & Ricky Dillard

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 21, 11

Kirk Franklin has a new song called “I Am” and it is apparently from his latest album Hello, Fear, which is due out this spring. It definitely sticks to the Kirk Franklin template of songwriting and sounds, and it’s a nice tune. Nothing groundbreaking at all, but definitely solid.

Something Bigger by Mary Mary Music

Mary Mary have released a couple of new singles, the first one being “Walking”, which apes almost wholesale in my opinion T.I.’s “Why You Wanna” (or whatever that song was probably sampled from in the first), and now their latest song “Something Bigger”, which is above.

I’ve always been a fan of Mary Mary, I have all of their albums. However, I feel like they have gotten more and more urban contemporary. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing on its face, but I feel like their music has began to suffer and become less creative in what will probably be deemed an attempt at “crossing over” to more non-Christian people. Their music is now rife with autotune, generic soundscapes, and busy production. These two ladies can SING, so it’s just a little baffling that they’ve taken this new direction. However, I will wait in hopes of that a cohesive album will come from these two singles and it will all work together for the good! /churchy

One of my favorite exuberant-for-no-reason choir directors ever, Ricky Dillard, is also releasing a new album this year. His new single “God Is Great” features trademark New Generation (“New G”) vocals and a vamp that modulates into the rafters. That Chicago vibrato is on full display as they go up and up. However, Ricky NOW he could have let someone else lead this song! Their 8th project is due this year as well, and it was recorded live last year in Detroit.

Gospel Spotlight: Onitsha Teams With Drake For A “Karaoke” Remix + Mixtape Release

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 19, 10

Gospel artist (and backup singer extraordinaire to the stars) Onitsha is taking the independent route for her next album, and has released a mixtape called Love, Onitsha to drum up interest in her new project and to share some new music with her fans and supporters. One of the remixes on her mixtape joint is a remix of Drake’s “Karaoke” from his album Thank Me Later. She even manages to finagle a shoutout from the ubiquitous rapper himself, which is nothing short of a coup these days for a small Gospel artist like Onitsha.

She also shot a feel good video with indie director Matthew Cherry, and it’s a breezy walk through South Central L.A. It’s a simple, straight to the point clip as we take a walk with O as she greets folks in the hood while singing her song. Check it out and if you’re interested in O’s voice, download her mixtape here. “You” is my favorite song from the project, and you can hear that below.

Onitsha’s voice is a mix of Brandy and any bonafide Gospel singer that you may enjoy. It’s nothing particularly overwhelming, but she is good for some good material and you can tell she puts her heart and soul into the notes she sings. Check out her debut project Church Girl on Hidden Beach Records if you’ve never heard of it — that’s actually REALLY good and one of my faves that I still listen to all the way through to this day.

Mary Mary Should Go Minister To T.I. In Prison Because Their Songs Sound Alike At Least…

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Nov 4, 10

Mary Mary have a new single, and I need someone to explain to me why it sounds like Hidden Beach’s “Unwrapped” version of T.I.’s “Why You Wanna”?! No, for real, it does.

Their song is called “Walking” and it’s very…I don’t know. Smooth, laid back, and…ambiguous. Club-friendly. Them and Tye Tribbett should take their new urban inspirational sound on the road to the clubs and jook joints and church Youth Explosions all around the country.

You want to do a body roll, two-step, lift your hands, and then I promise an accidental T.I. line will slip out. It did out of my mouth:

Go and tell the Devil no, wit a spirit so right
Hey you better go and do that now saints, huh

Or something to that effect. LOL.

The new project is Something Big, and it’ll hit stores on February 1, 2011. I’m interested to see what they come with if this is the first single…

The Incomparable Ledisi Pays Tribute To Gospel Legend Bishop Walter Hawkins Like Only She Can With “Be Grateful”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 22, 10

For those who aren’t familiar, Bishop Walter Hawkins passed recently, and he was a prolific and legendary Gospel artist and songwriter. He opened a lot of doors and set a lot of standards in terms of how Black church and choral music are written and produced in my opinion. His passing was a great loss to the Gospel music community at large. The tribute service was held yesterday (7/20) in Oakland, and will be airing on Sunday on the GMC (Gospel Music Channel). Many luminaries and Gospel “stars” were in the house to pay tribute to this great man, and I look forward to watching it on Sunday night.

However, someone got a video of blog favorite Ledisi singing one of his signature songs “Be Grateful”, and when I tell you, for someone who isn’t a strictly “Gospel” singer, she absolutely did her BEST singing on this song! She just to’ this up and sent it up to Heaven. Walter is playing this video on his iPad. I promise!

That’s a TRIBUTE. That’s what I expect! Not what Chris Brown did at the BET Awards. THIS.

And I love Ledisi and ya’ll know she can almost do no wrong in my book.

      RIP Walter Hawkins!
