    • What Do We Think About Mateo’s “Don’t Shoot Me Down”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 24, 11

Mateo has been bumping around the music scene for awhile, especially if you live in the Los Angeles area. He’s finally landed with Kerry “Krucial” Brothers’ new imprint, Krucial Noise, after being left on the backburner at the now failed and defunct Myspace Records. His first offering from his Love & Stadiums mixtape is the song called “Don’t Shoot Me Down” and features soul siren Goapele in a both starring role in the visual and as a guest on the track, along with rapper Ab-liva.

“Don’t Shoot Me Down” has a really lush, sharp visual that I’m liking. Make the video full screen and go HD if you can, it worth it. The song itself is a slow burning build of a mid-tempo cut, and Goapele’s (who I sometimes have a love/hate relationship with?) voice lilts over the track nicely. It’s a smooth joint and I think with repeated listens I could get into it a lot.

His mixtape drops on the 30th, and for more information, hit up his official website!

Explore Music: Aloe Blacc’s “Loving You Is Killing Me”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 21, 11

Aloe Blacc’s “I Need A Dollar” gained him major traction as an artist outside of Los Angeles due to its placement as the theme song for HBO’s “How To Make It In America”, but he was definitely not new to the music scene in general. Stones Throw has continued to try and keep his upward trajectory going and now have released the video for his latest single “Loving You Is Killing Me”.

Aloe has a throwback sound that seems to permeate his music, and though he’s no crooner, he gets by. I do enjoy a couple of songs off his latest record Good Things, and “Loving…” is one of them. The video is also pretty cute with the little kid battling and dancing with Aloe to those old school 70′s/Rerun dance moves. There’s no real context to the song or the lyrics outside of the general sound of the record, but I honestly can’t say that I minded. The lil boy doing his good dancing more than made up for it LOL.

Explore Music: Foo Fighters Live Inside The Box On “Rope”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 15, 11

I’ve been a Foo Fighters fan for a while. Dave Grohl’s an awesome guitarist, and I enjoy his vocals most times I hear them. They have some great songs, and I’ve just always listened to their music when it drops and on the random occasion that I feel like rocking out. I’m feeling the music bed on their new track “Rope”, which is from their new album Wasting Light, which is due out April 12th.

The drummer kills on this song, and I hear that this new album of theirs was recorded completely in analog up until the mastering stages. It sounds dirty, authentic, and crunchy on this song and I like it. I also liked the video — the silhouettes and the changing of the colors by flicking the switch on the amp was pretty dope. Get into it!

Explore Music: Get Into Treasure Davis’ “Just A Heart”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 8, 11

So also during my trip to Los Angeles, I kept hearing talk about a new artist named Treasure Davis. I felt like I had heard the name before, and finally someone sent me some links via Twitter to some of her music.

Well, lo and behold, a couple of my Twitter followers actually have worked with her. One being a producer by the name of Cornelio Austin. He apparently produced this song that I instantly fell in love with by Treasure called “Just A Heart”. I scrolled through the rest of her music on her ReverbNation page, but this is the one that stuck out the most to me.

Treasure’s voice is delicate yet powerful, and I loved this song. I also got my download for free and liked her on Facebook, you should too. I look forward to hearing a project from her and seeing what she comes up with in the future. Let me know what y’all think of Treasure Davis in the comments too!

Explore Music: Kenna & Shimmy Hoffa Want You To Dance Loose From Your “Chains”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 23, 11

Chains (feat. Shimmy Hoffa) by KennaChannel

I’m still trying to decipher the lyrics, but until then, let’s just be happy that Kenna has returned. Kenna might be a bit too obscure for most folks, but I’ve enjoyed some of his later music. He hooked up with Chad Hugo, 1/2 of The Neptunes, as his production go-to, and it’s been a funky mashup and blend of genres ever since.

Kenna’s putting out a new project, and once again, Chad Hugo (this time under the name Shimmy Hoffa), has provided some jamming musical beds for Kenna to do his obtuse singing and writing over. Get into it and let me know what you think. And if you’ve never heard of Kenna (which is very highly probable, LOL), check out his joint “Say Goodbye To Love”. Knocker! Also “Loose Wires”. Few more deets after the jump…

Explore Music: Frank Ocean’s “Nostalgia, Ultra” Free Album Is Worth The Megabytes

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 18, 11

Download Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra Album Here

I discovered this singer named Frank Ocean via Twitter yesterday. He dropped an album for free that is REALLY dope. And you know I don’t give out compliments like that often.

From what I can gather, he’s a part of the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All crew (see my post on Odd Future yesterday) — and is clearly nothing like his crew. Which I find startling. Frank Ocean’s sounds is a mix of crooning, young soul, youthful themes, breezy beats, effortless coolness, and a dash of REALLY good music. Check out two of my favorites below — “Novacane” and “We All Try”. Honestly, the whole album is good throughout and is well worth the download. You can follow him on Twitter and he’s also on Tumblr.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Explore Music: Jonte’s Music Might Be Too Much For Most, But It’s Still Catchy And Original

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 16, 11

THE LAST TRAIN TO AFRICA PARIS by hellojonte

So, either you are going to like this….or not at all! LOL. AND, I should give the disclaimer that Jonte’ is probably a bit much for work maybe, so you might want to DL this and put it on your iPod if you are interested in hearing it today!

That being said, I’ve featured Jonte’ on the blog before. He’s a fantastic dancer and choreographer who has worked with such stars as Beyonce’, Janet Jackson, and more. He’s turned his love into entertaining and singing into being a solo artist that is HUGE in Japan, NYC, and is trying to break out worldwide.

Enter his mixtape Last Train To Africa Paris. If you can get past the makeup, clothes, and whatever else you may not GET, the guy makes some music that is darn catchy, danceable, fresh, crazy, innovative, and plain INTERESTING. If the visuals offend you, I just challenge you to listen to this mixtape and get into the creativity that is Jonte’.

I’m here to challenge you to something new. So…challenge! Probably going to be a very polarizing experience for you either way, but I’ve heard some of his new soon to be released stuff, and as much as he is an entertainer, he can also hold it down vocally as well. More to come. Share your thoughts! Tracklist after the jump!

Mixtapes: Two Albums I Loved This Year Get Remixed! Black Keys Vs. Big Boi Mashup Tape

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 23, 10

      [Download Link]

Two albums I highly recommend purchasing from this year, The Black Keys’ Brothers and Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty, have gotten the mashup treatment from someone named DJ Wick-It. The Black Keys’ brand of dusty soul rock blends surprisingly well with Big Boi’s quick raps and off kilter beat selection. It’s quite a mashup that I am enjoying. I copped my copy, and was hooked from the first song, “You Ain’t The Next DJ”, which blends two of my favorite Black Keys and Big Boi songs from jump.

Cop this, and let me know what you think. It’s different, but you may get an appreciation for both or one of the artists if you haven’t had the chance to listen to either of their latest releases.

Explore Music: James Blunt Returns With “So Far Gone”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 15, 10

Yes, I like this song. No, I have no shame. The songwriting is pretty good on this joint. It’s taken from his latest album Some Kind of Trouble, and I am going to be honest, I didn’t even KNOW he HAD a new album out. This Ryan Tedder produced song sits nicely in the pocket of the way I am feeling right now, and James Blunt, doe-eyes and androgynous haircut aside, delivers it well.

Explore Music: Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” Is Cool, Oh, And The Music Is Good, Too.

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 14, 10

Daft Punk are the masters of what they do, which is exemplified by them doing the score for the Tron: Legacy movie that is coming out this weekend. I’ve never seen the original but I am HIGHLY interested in seeing this new one, so I might have to go cop the old one before Friday.

The visuals were crafted especially for this video from what I understand, but of course it mirrors the movie and its themes. It’s a pretty fresh song as well and it makes me excited to see what the rest of the score sounds like.

Any Daft Punk fans? What do you think of this?
