    • Explore Music: The Black Keys’ “Tighten Up” Is Soulful & Rocked Out

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on May 19, 10

I love The Black Keys. Their soulful blend of rock just hits the right notes for me, and a lot of other hip-hop heads apparently. They worked with Dame Dash and a host of other talent for the Blackroc project, and now their back with their own music with their new album called Brothers, which hit stores today.

“Tighten Up” is the first single that drops and it features some hilarious moments. The members of the group meet up while their sons play on the playground (one of which smells like ranch, HA!). Enter a girl, and chaos ensues. And of course remember, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

You can cop their album on iTunes here! Check out their website for more info if you’ve never heard of them. Good music folks!

Explore Music: Sia – “Clap Your Hands”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 30, 10

Most of you have probably never heard of Sia, and I myself am a very recent convert. I was familiar with her music as part of Zero7, but didn’t really get the chance to digest too much of her music as a solo artist. She’s an Australian singer who can best be described at times as a melange of jazzy, pop, soul-ish vocals. She has a new album coming out June 7th titled We Are Born, and “Clap Your Hands” is the latest single released as a video.

This came across my radar earlier this week and I am just now getting a chance to check it out and I LOVE it. If you’ve been here before, you know I’m down for this kind of music. The video itself is a crazy mix of puppetry and Sia’s face and lots of Muppet-esque dancing, but it’s definitely interersting. The hook for this song drops and I just want to get up and start moving, it’s great.

Sia voice has a tinge of soul, just enough to give this disco-fied pop track a great feel and vibe. She’s also working with Christina Aguilera on her new album which is about to drop, so that might be exciting. If you like this song, check out her first single, “You’ve Changed”. The vid for that is dope too!

Explore Music: Shad Tries To Make Sure We “Get” It

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 23, 10

Canadian hip-hop artist Shad drops a video for his buzzing single (and Stateside career) “Yaa I Get It”. He’s pretty engaging and his voice reminds of Slick Rick. “Yaa I Get It” has some nice moments and I like how he used drops and effects to make his song even more engaging. He really goes in towards at the end of the song though — peep his flow! Nice wordplay my man. What ya’ll think?

Explore Music: Tanya Morgan – “Bang + Boogie”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Apr 21, 10

Tanya Morgan is actually a group — of men, at that. Check their Myspace! This song is taken from their latest album Brooklynati, which is out now.

I liked the beat, and the video is cool too. I thought they had some great lines here and their and their delivery is interesting enough to make me want to stop and hear the whole story that they are telling, so to speak. I liked the energy of this video as well. I think I may have posted a song of theirs before actually.

They are repping Brooklyn and Cincinnati, and their music has a bit of a toughness that I like. What do ya’ll think of this song/video? Thumbs up? Down?

Two New Albums You Might Never Hear But Should: Angelique Kidjo & Bobby McFerrin

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Apr 9, 10

I’m still on my quest to expose ya’ll to new music, so I’m going to share some of my latest finds which I think are amazing and you might find that you like too! The first up is Angelique Kidjo’s Oyo album, which just came out this week. Now, I love African rhythms (hence the amazing mix that I had put together just for you guys!), especially those mixed with American forms of rhythms and beats and songs…and artists. Angelique Kidjo is a legend and her last album Djin Djin stayed in my rotation as well. Oyo features a great mix of songs, rhythms, covers, originals and just great music. This may not be your cup of tea, however, I dare you to give it a spin. Both albums are free to listen to in their entirety once below from Lala.com, so just try it!

The album features duets as well with Bono, John Legend, Roy Hargrove (!) and even jazz great Dianne Reeves. Trust me, a spin is worth it.

      OYO – Angelique Kidjo

Next up is Bobby McFerrin’s new album VOCAbuLarieS. I just posted a clip of Bobby showing some music theory in a fun way with an interactive audience, but this man is truly a master of his voice, and others apparently. On this new album of his, he takes and multi-tracks from all over the world, and orchestrates them into a giant chorus which features upwards of 1,000+ music tracks sequenced together for form one of the most harmonious and interesting vocal palettes you will ever hear in your life. The music hits you like a wall of sound. He’s re-engineered Phil Spector’s famous technique in my opinion and transformed it into his own. If you love vocals of any kind (and no, Rihanna doesn’t count), you should take a listen to this awesome body of work. Some of the songs are long, but take a listen with your ears and mind and get enveloped in what Mr. “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is truly about!

Explore Music: Nicole Wray Wonders Why She Can’t “Forget Him”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Mar 18, 10

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Blackroc Feat. Nicole Wray – “Why Can’t I Forget Him”

You know, when the Blackroc album came out, I bought it on the strength of liking The Black Keys — one of my friends turned me onto their music. Then I heard Damon Dash was putting together a blending of their music with some hip-hop artists and I was semi-intrigued.

The album tends to drag a bit to me but the more and more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it. However, this song featuring Nicole Wray is a favorite of mine. Nicole Wray has been off and on the scene over the past few years or so, but I loved her “If I Was Your Girlfriend”, a lot actually. Her voice fits this music dynamic perfectly, because it possesses a little bit of grit to give it that rock/soul edge.

Check out this joint and let me know what you think. The project is available at Amazon and other fine retailers if you’re interested in more.

Explore Music: Soulful! Shows Us The Way To “The Mellow Life” With Instrumental Mixtape

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 17, 10

      Soulful! – The Mellow Life

      [Download Mixtape Here]

DMV area producer Soulful! has actually turned in a varied but nicely done and musically solid instrumental mixtape called The Mellow Life. I find myself listening to this A LOT actually. I really enjoyed the tracks — they flowed together, sound great and give you a different kind of feel for a mixtape. It’s all original music with some samples and special gusts mixed in for good measure.

It’s a chill at times yet hype enough to keep you interested mix of music, instrumentals, hip-hop and smoothed out R&B influenced mellow jams. The Mellow Life indeed!

I challenge you to check it out and see if you can get into it. It’s not your typical mixtape, and it’s definitely not someone rehashing tired radio staples or rearranging already bad songs into worse ones.

Tracks to check out: “Cruise Control” (peep the vid for that here), “Out My Mind”, “Heart Speak” and “Yo Man!”

Explore Music: The xx + DMX = Mash-up Hip-Hoppy Goodness

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Mar 5, 10

You probably haven’t heard of The xx, but you’ve probably heard their song “Intro” if you’ve watched TV or the Olympics this year — it’s been ubiquitous. Now, someone has taken the song mixed it up with an a capella of DMX’s “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” and my GOD does it work. This is so freaking on point that it is kind of spooky. And way better than anything Linkin Park and Jay-Z ever created. True story.

These two seemingly different genres really meshed in the final mix though, it’s crazy!

What do you think? I’mma try and make an mp3 of this ASAP and will post it here when I do, for those who are interested.

Music in Action: Bobby McFerrin Teaches A Crowd The Pentatonic Scale (Watch This!)

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 1, 10

So, most people know Bobby McFerrin from “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, but truth be told, way before then he hit #1 with that song, he’d already had 5 Grammy wins under his belt, and got two more after that.

Well, he’s an internationally known composer, conductor, performer and clinician among other things, and in this cool video, he does an interactive demonstration of the Pentatonic scale. I’m a musician and have studied music, so you are probably like “what is that?” It was most famously recognized as the intro to The Temptations’ “My Girl”. THAT’S an example of the Pentatonic scale. I will leave it at that LOL.

Watch this cool video — it’s about 3 minutes long but I thought it was interesting! This was recorded at the “Notes & Neurons: In Search of a Common Chorus” event from the 2009 World Science Festival and Bobby got the whole CROWD involved.

A little different from the usual Monday post, but hey, you’ll learn something LOL. Bobby McFerrin is amazing! Him with the amazing pianist Chick Corea is great music, I promise you.

Old Money > Dirty Money Any Day of the Week With “Mamaseh”; What Do We Think?

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Feb 26, 10

My daily traverse across the Internets brought me to this Old Money video for their song called “Mamaseh”. Old Money is a NYC/Vancouver, CA based but coat of many colors originated group that makes music that’s a mashup of many different genres — hip-hop, UK grime, dancehall, funk, Afro-beat and more. Me likey.

In the video for “Mamaseh”, Old Money surreptiously then overtly follows around a “New Yorker”, who, like most NY’ers, is in his own bubble as he goes about his evening. Then he begins to realize he is being followed…before coming to the realization that it is all in his head. Or is it? Paranoia is a dish best served cold.

“Mamaseh” is all beats and rhymes and while it may take me another few hours to decipher all the words, the beat is infectious and all-encompassing. I love these kinds of rhythms, as evidenced by our “From Kampala to K-Town” mix which is being featured for a free download. It gets in your spine and soul and just makes you want to dance, and I don’t mean no damn Stanky Leg either LOL!

If you like this joint, it’s available on iTunes and you can get more info about Old Money at their Myspace. I like my money old rather than dirty, sorry Diddy!
