    • Explore Music: How To Dress Well Gives You The Rough With The Smooth With “Ocean Floor For Everything”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 7, 12

Apparently, How To Dress Well is coming to my neck of the woods tonight, and I may go check the show out. Just heard about them/him today, and it kind of falls into the The Weeknd/Frank Ocean/The Inc. vibe, which at times, I can deal with.

How To Dress Well is actually one person named Tom Krell. His brand of ethereal R&B and beats have been going over well with the indie crowd, and from the few tracks I’ve heard, I can probably get with it. However, “Ocean Floor For Everything” immediately hooked me — the beat drops, the claps start, the “hey” refrain is overlaid some nice, lilting vocals, and it’s creates a great dissonant yet harmonic blend with some nice rough edges. I liked this song a lot.

It’s taken from his latest album Total Loss, of which I will be checking out shortly. What do you think about this track?

Explore Music: Let Jesus & Jor’dan Armstrong “Make It Alright”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

Jor’dan Armstrong – “Make It Alright”

Get into this sexy Gospel urban R&B soul! Jor’dan Armstrong is killing this joint “Make It Alright”. He’d put out a mixtape called Jesus, Fashion & Beatz that was a nice blending of the themes of basically being a young dude who loves the Lord, Gospel music, and the usual trappings of the mainstream world like R&B, Top 40, Hip-Hop, etc. It took a lot of current musical influences and mixed them with more positive themes in relation to Gospel music — all without being extremely corny.

Jor’dan’s now released his sophomore album Stronger and it’s also a great project, featuring more of the same quality yet urban/cotemporary Gospel jams. “Make It Alright” is a holdover from the mixtape, but this is such a catchy, well-produced song — Gospel or not. It’s been on constant repeat, and even if you don’t like Gospel music, I think you might be suckered into a few repeated listens of this song along with a couple of others.

If you have kids that you want to to stop listening to Lil’ Wayne or Chris Brown, maybe try sliding a few of Stronger‘s album cuts into the rotation. I don’t think they’d be able to tell the difference.

I’m curious to hear what y’all think about this? Too Gospel for you? Not Gospel enough? Let’s talk about it. In any case, this is my jam!

Get the album and the mixtape at Jor’dan site!

Explore Music: Andy Allo Might Not Be A “People Pleaser” But Her Music Does That Job For Her

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 8, 12

Prince has a new protégé, the beautiful Cameroonian artist Andy Allo, has hit the funkin’ ground RUNNING with her first single from her upcoming sophomore album Superconductor. An INSTANT groover once you hit play, “People Pleaser” has a funky vibe, a funky, fun and choreographed video, and just a straight up CRANKIN’ vibe. I’m loving this. I’ve listened to it twice in a row.

Andy Allo joined Prince’s New Power Generation, and as such he’s taken her under his wing, co-writing, executive producing, and mentoring Andy as well on her new album.

      Get into those horns!

This is a soulful funky cut with a sexy twist that hasn’t been seen in a while. I’d love to see her and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings on tour — talk about a soul explosion.

What do y’all think of Andy Allo’s new video?

Hit up Andy on Twitter and her site, and tell her Tha Feedback sent you!

Explore Music: Sy Smith & Rahsaan Patterson “Feel Like Getting Down”!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 20, 12

Sy Smith is one of music’s unsung talents — singer, writer, producer, drummer and more. She’s worked with some amazing artists and collaborated with a lot of her equally talented friends while also managing to still put out a few amazing solo albums as well. Her latest Fast And Curious features some amazing songs, the one being featured here is her cover of Billy Ocean’s song “Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)”.

She gives the song a bright visual treatment mixed with some live performance clips of her and her talented friends, such as one of my favorite male vocalists in the world, her duet partner Rahsaan Patterson. Also in the video is singer extraordinaire Lalah Hathaway, and one of my favorite keyboardists around, Cassandra O’Neal, who tours with Prince!

Sy and Rah turn this song OUT — both of their vocals are amazing, as usual. If you’ve never heard of Sy Smith, please get her albums. I love her cover of Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians‘ “What I Am” from her last album Psykosoul as well. Peep the original Billy Ocean song after the jump! What do y’all think? Is it one of those nights you feel like getting down?

Explore Music: Lianne La Havas Proves That Love’s Timeline Isn’t The Same As Ours With “Age”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Oct 18, 12

I love Lianne La Havas, and I’m a little late to the party, but I’m definitely glad I came.

Her excellent album Is Your Love Big Enough? is one that you definitely need to pick up. She was nominated for a Mercury Prize for her debut album, and hailing from the UK, she’s once again another example of how the Brits are still crushing  us in recent memory on the Soul music tip.

“Age” is an album cut from Is Your Love Big Enough? and there’s no reverse-cougarism going on here — or is there? My interpretation of this video and song is almost that of a 2012 “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” — Lianne’s dated younger men, but the older men just know how to love you a different way, and it’s not even sexual. It’s a beautiful song and video from a similarly beautiful singer and artist.

Check this out and let me know what you think of Lianne’s latest single!

Explore Music: Disco In 2012? “Holding You Tight” Is A Sure Thing

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 18, 12

Found this nu-disco boogie jam a while back on the Internet and had to bookmark it. I, am an old soul when it comes to music. I love all the old styles of music in addition to the new styles. Disco ranks high on my list of likes.

So imagine my surprise awhile ago when I found that not only is disco revived in the genre branded “nu-disco”, but also that people were making hella funky jams like this! Sure Thing is the name, and they’re a supergroup of sorts from the UK. It features 3 bass DJ’s who’ve come together to craft funky jams sporadically such as “Holding You Tight”.

This classically flavored video reminiscent of the era in which disco had its halcyon days is awesome. The music is awesome. If you don’t like disco, this ain’t for you.

DJ Die, Christophe, Desi Rogers, Joker, William Cartwright, rounded off by some sultry vocals from Chloé Lang — get into this joint, and let me know what you think!

Explore Music: Psychemagik Does A Fantastic Remix Of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Sep 11, 12

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album is probably one of my Top 20 favorite albums of all time. I was on KCRW today, and they posted up this awesome remix of their song “Dreams”, which features the vocals of the incomparable Stevie Nicks. It’s a classic song from their classic record above, but it’s such an excellently done take on their original, that not only have I not stopped listening to it since I found it, but I had to go and make a post about it.

If you’re not a fan or not acquainted with Fleetwood Mac, go listen to this album RIGHT NOW on Spotify:

Get into this remix. I love it.

Explore Music: This New Noisettes Song Is Definitely A “Winner”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 20, 12

Another one of my favorites from across the pond, The Noisettes have dropped a new single in support of London hosting the 2012 Olympics and it’s aptly titled “Winner”.

It was supposed to be the first single off their new album Contact which drops August 27th, but I guess they decided to drop it for free, much to my approval! “Winner” is a raucous, uptempo stomper, and Shingai’s voice shines still no matter what the instrumental may be. It’s a rollicking romp into Brit-soul with tinges of soul, R&B and a hint of the current electro craze (though that’s mostly just guitar!).

The video is full of laughs in my opinion, what with Shingai’s hat, but it still clearly shows that this song is prime for Olympic promo.

You can cop the free download as well if you like their Facebook page. To do that, click this link!

Explore Music: The xx Slow Dance With “Angels”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 16, 12

The xx are a trio from London directly influenced by Sade, Everything But the Girl and many contemporary sounds coming from London’s eclectic music scene. I first heard the xx in 2009 and their self-titled debut was a breakthrough set full of hauntingly romantic songs set to electronic drum arrangements from Jamie xx.

The xx returns with “Angels”, the opening track from their long awaited new album Coexist, due September 11th on Young Turks. The xx’s Romy Madley Croft’s vocals on “Angels” are just as arresting as they were on the band’s debut, and the lush musical arrangement will leave you yearning for more.

The lyrics spell out feelings so intimate, you’re filled with the warmth of a summer’s romance in full bloom. Jamie xx’s haunting drums slide across the passionate soundscape, setting the tone for what sound be another amazing effort from the Mercury Prize winning band. Listen for yourself and prepare for what will be one of the most celebrated albums of the year.

You will also have a chance to see the xx live across North America starting this month in Los Angeles on July 23rd. If you purchase tickets to most of the thirty-one tour dates on their schedule, you will also receive a free download of their new album.

Explore Music: DivaGeek (@divageekmusik) Very Unexpectedly Has Jams That Make Me “Happy”!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 15, 12

Y’all know I have mentioned on numerous occasions here on Tha Feedback how the Brits are smashing the soul/R&B game, more than the Americans these days. With EDM (Electronic Dance Music) become the de facto form of “pop” music here in the States, once again I’ve turned my attention across the pond to see what they have to offer up lately.

Well, enter DivaGeek. I mean, the name is so apropos. I had no idea what I was getting into looking at the album cover on their Bandcamp page, but once I hit play, I was immediately impressed with what I heard. Who would have ever expected that a white man with a beard would be this funky? Who would have guessed that the “DIVA” in DivaGeek really and truly meant that she had a powerful, amazing voice? Their name is definitely not a misnomer at all.

One of my favorite tracks, and one that has been on repeat for probably the past few weeks is “Mr Happy”. This song GOES to me. I love it. I love the lyrics, the groove, and Vula’s vocals. Instant replay value. Other standout tracks are definitely both of the covers on this album, “Can’t Help It” (Michael Jackson) and “I Can’t Go For That” (Hall & Oates). Please believe the original songs are great, too: “Money”, “Go Hard” and “Hangin’ Wid U” are great joints. You can definitely hear the influence of their favorite artists throughout the album, which they mention on the final track “Thanks”.

I’ve listened to this album in its entirety a number of times. It’s definitely worth checking, and you can purchase it from their site OR, it’s also on Spotify as well.

Give “Mr Happy” a listen, and if you like it, tweet them and let them you know you found out about them from Tha Feedback! Also, after the jump, there’s a remix they did of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”!
