    • Explore Music: “You Know You Like” AlunaGeorge

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

AlunaGeorge hit Pitchfork yesterday, and I’ve already digested and figured out that the best song in my opinion thus far that they’ve released is definitely the sultry, slithery funk that is “You Know You Like It”.

Aluna Francis’ tentative voice mixed with her Brit accent and light but agile voice are what make this track standout, and George Reid’s track channels the funk of yore mixed with an airy, electronic and sub-bass heavy sound that writhes up and down your spine.

AlunaGeorge got their start randomly making music, and they have a new EP hitting shelves as well. This video though reminds me of Kimbra (especially in the above video) meets Beverley Knight. And Robyn. And they had a electro R&B baby. They got their start off as friends making music for fun on their MacBook, only to realize that they’re actually kind of good at it. Rags to riches!

What do you all think of AlunaGeorge? Check out their latest song “Just A Touch” from their EP of the same name as the video above, due out today, below:

Explore Music: Jai Paul’s “Jasmine” Is An Aural Trip Through A Rubberband-Soul Alternative Universe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 9, 12

You’ve probably never heard of Jai Paul. If you’ve heard Beyonce’s “End of Time”, then you’ve heard of Jai Paul. His song “BTSU” was sampled for the intro of that song — specifically the “don’t f**k with me” line. So if you thought you did hear the f-bomb at the beginning of the song — you did!

Jai Paul is an elusive beatsmith and creator, but the two songs he has released have been AMAZING. Even “Jasmine” is tagged as a “demo” officially for whatever reason. But the slinky soul, funky, hand-clapped menagerie of melody that is this song is undeniable. The vibe seeps into your psyche and you find yourself wanting to hit repeat and run it back.

Jai Paul’s vocals are light and nimble but laced in old soul and new sensibilities. It both counteracts and melds into the track, with just enough tentativeness to draw you in even more, listen upon listen.

I’m hoping he’ll release material more often, but “Jasmine” is a dope a** song, and you need to get up on this immediately.

“Surely” You Will Be As Excited About This New SBTRKT Song As I Was

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 14, 12

One of my favorite acts SBTRKT has put out an awesome new joint called “Surely”.

Synths, drums, organs, massive sound — you will love it. If not, check out his latest album. Love it.

No idea if this is connected to anything release-wise, but let’s just enjoy it.

Explore Music: Nneka’s “Home” Is Where Relief And Hope Lie

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 12, 12

I’ve been aware of Nneka for a while, but her new record is creating a lot of buzz for her, and I may have to not only finally find sometime to check it out, but to also delve into the rest of her catalog as an artist. Her penchant for political, poignant, pop-soul tunes is a far cry from some other “political” artists such as M.I.A. Nneka’s blend of vocal ferocity and lyrical muster really do hit home immediately, and the visual for “My Home” is just another shining example of this.

Nneka’s “My Home” video illustrates that no matter what your walk in life, we all seek release and have to keep hope alive. From the boardrooms to the slums to beyond, something keeps us going. Nneka talks about hers here. The song is great, I hit repeat a couple of times, and it’s enough to make me want more of Nneka. Her album Soul Is Heavy is out now, and this is the 3rd single from it.

Explore Music: Louisiana Meets The UK Meets Soul X Hip-Hop In Mark Ronson’s “A La Modeliste”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 18, 12

The Re:Generation project, sponsored by the Hyundai Veloster campaign, got a bunch of DJ’s (DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, etc.) to reinterpret different genres of musc In this particular clip, Mark Ronson steps up to the plate, pulling in Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), backed by The Dap-Kings, Trombone Shorty and New Orleans’ Zigaboo Modeliste for the cut “A La Modeliste.” Get into this jam session with Lady Badu. I think it’s hilarious that music is being sponsored by car companies and ads and being driven by non-traditional sources like labels and the like. But hey, as long as the music is getting made, I’m not THAT mad.

Explore Music: Coldplay’s Swelling Strings and Soaring Vocals Will Send You To “Paradise”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Oct 25, 11

Coldplay‘s official first single “Paradise” from their new album Mylo Xyloto is one of those songs that kicks in and takes you right away. “Paradise” has a sense of majesty that sweeps you away from the opening strings to the building drums that marry to emotive vocals and a brilliant melody. In other words, this is my kind of tune.

The video seems like the journey to find where you belong. Chris Martin walks, dances and rides a unicycle – wearing an elephant suit, no less – to find something that matters. At his bleakest junction, he finds his musical companions – three other elephants playing instruments. From there, they go to play at large stadiums to even largre crowds, while remembering the journey that brought them there.

Am I over-analyzing this video? Probably. But something about the song and theme really works for me at this point in my life. Hopefully, you all will find something relatable in it too. Mylo Xyloto is in stores on October 24, 2011.

Explore Music: Little Dragon Trip Out To “Brush The Heat”

Written by Donovan in Videos on Sep 22, 11

Break it down Yukimi! “Brush The Heat” is one of my favorite tracks from Little Dragon’s latest LP Ritual Union so I’m happy to see it got the video treatment. This record is one of their funkiest yet on an equally funky album. If you haven’t copped it, then you are doing yourself a disservice!

In keeping with their offbeatness, the group release a trippy video that seems as if everyone was on LSD and/or acid while coming up with the video treatment. I myself do not do drugs so I can’t tell you what its about. I’m not mad though, because Little Dragon’s weirdness has been approved by the “I’m So Different” Committee consisting of me, myself and I. Yukimi can come out dancing in a parka and some clogs while a manatee harlem shakes in the back and I still will be down with LD. The Illuminati strikes again!

Explore Music: James Blake & Bon Iver + “Falls Creek Boys Choir”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 24, 11

I don’t know what kind of church or diocese would have this “choir” on stage, but this is a hauntingly strange yet cohesive song that I really liked.

However, I’m a James Blake fan. Never really had the chance to get into Bon Iver (I only have so much time, 2 ear drums, and only so much room on my HD these days), but we all know that Kanye West is a fan and has sampled him before and included him in live performances. Well UK bred and famous electro singer/songwriter James Blake and Bon Iver teamed up after learning they were mutual fans of each other. They premiered this joint on BBC’s Radio 1, and while I am not entirely sure what to make of it…I like it. And according to Miss Info, they crafted this song over email. Dope.

Y’all know I like crazy stuff though, so I want someone else to take a listen and leave a comment letting me know your immediate thoughts upon first listen. Let’s compare notes, shall we? Explore!

Mixtapes: Jaiden “The Cure” Colors His World Grey & Saturn Never Sleeps Retool “Yesterday’s Machine”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 19, 11

Jaiden aka “The Cure” has been featured on Tha Feedback before, and now he’s finally dropped his new mixtape Shades of Grey: The Cure Suite II. Let me warn you, if you’re stepping into this suite, be prepared for it to be hot, heavy, and permeated with the smells of seduction and sex. Jaiden’s whole mixtape essentially centers on his erotic mind, dreams, and wishes, and he is definitely not afraid to sing about it and show it.

While his voice is flawless and singing obviously comes effortlessly to him, at times, his voice can be daunting to decipher and decode as he wraps everything in heavy melisma and attempts at lyrical heaviness. At the end of the day, he’s a singer doing what he does best. While other sings may appreciate his technicality, the average listener might get weary of the constant riffing. Jaiden’s next challenge should be to sing it a bit more simply, and get his penmanship up some more. He’s definitely talented though, and I am not shorting him that by any means at all. Check this mixtape out! I’m definitely a fan, and have been since I heard him slay on “The One”.

I think after absorbing this whole project, my favorite joint and the most memorable one was definitely the title cut, “Shades Of Grey”.

I had the pleasure of hearing King Britt DJ at Portland’s “Do Over” party this past week, and man, dude KILLED it! He did the most awesome live version of James Blake’s “The Wilhelm Scream” LIVE by adding drums and other goodness on top of it LIVE. I absolutely became a fan of King Britt all over again.

I tweeted and started following him very shortly after, and saw that he and his side project Saturn Never Sleeps had released a new project called Yesterday’s Machine. The side project consists of him and his wife Rucyl. When I tell you I was pleasantly surprised by this joint, I was!

Not really a mixtape, but a free album I should say. It sounds a little bit Little Dragon-esque, which is fine with me because I love Little Dragon. Rucyl’s voice is comparable, and her lilt is light, effortless, and sits well within the music. Also a composer herself, in addition to her vocals, she also adds additional electronics too. The project is a lovely electronic/soulful/bass heavy foray into atmospherical sounds that really is relaxing, and quite good.

Check out their website here, and it’s a free download as well, so be sure to cop it. Hit him on Twitter and tell him that you got it from Tha Feedback and @rmichaelthomas!

New Music To Explore: Feist Wonders “How Come You Never Go There”?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 12, 11

How Come You Never Go There by Feist

Hands down, Feist is one of my favorite artists. You’d never think it looking at me, but I love Feist’s music, and she is amazing live. Seriously. I cannot express why exactly, but the first time I heard her music I was drawn in and the live experience is even better!

So today, I heard/saw on the web that she has A) a new single out, the above “How Come You Never Go There” and B) she’s going on tour and C) she has a new album out in October called Metals on the 4th, I just about screamed and hit the ceiling.

The sparsely-starting “How Come You Never Go There” has a slow, subtle build in the backgrounds that immediately caught my attention, and of course, Feist’s slightly off-kilter voice sits right in the sonic pocket between the instrumentation and melodies. It fits. Feist knows her voice, and the timbre of talent always blends lushfully, melodically, and fittingly between whatever sonic beds she wants to lay it between. While this is an interesting choice for a single, it still is lovely and gets me amped (so to speak) for her new album.

Any Feist fans? Where all my Canadians at?
