Exclusive Rumor News: IDJ or Def Jam to Shutter Its Doors?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 8, 09

I’m hearing rumors from a bunch of industry friends (blogging is not what I really do BTW) that Island Def Jam or Def Jam is about to close its doors. L.A. Reid is also probably on the way out due to his overspending and generally dismal results lately (Mariah Carey, Amerie, Rihanna, etc.).

We all know that Mariah hasn’t done expected sales, despite the fact that the label has recouped a lot of their expenses due to her extensive licensing/promotion deals with they benefited from as well.

Amerie hasn’t sold nearly the amount she should have, and neither has Rihanna, even after slashing the rate to $.99. There are other releases in other genres of course (primarily Urban) that haven’t probably been worth the return for the expenditures the label laid out.

As I hear more definitive news in the coming weeks or if/when something breaks, I will let you know, but remember you heard it here first! I don’t do rumors usually, but I’ve been hearing this one over and over…so we will see.
