    • Estelle Wants Us To “Fall In Love” With This New Music Of Hers

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 27, 10

After Estelle’s “Freak” single met some backlash, she hoofed it back to the safehouse with the release of “Fall In Love” with a guest appearance by the constantly embattled Nas. The video has dropped and while it’s an easy, breezy affair and Estelle looks great, the song feels UBER safe and radio ready. Estelle’s no singer and we don’t mind that, but this song has no real movement or aural excitement to draw your attention anywhere else, so you are stuck hearing her plaintive voice over this summer-time beat.

It’s not a bad song though, and Estelle knows her lane vocally and stays in it. My biggest issue about this song is Nas. Nas’ verse feel disconnected from the rest of the song and it feels like a case of “We Need A Rapper Because…”. No, you don’t! Nas detracts away from the flow of the song and if you remove his bars and let Estelle ride it out on her lonesome, the playability of this track increases fivefold. I can’t wait for the days when we get past “throwing rappers on songs to make them hot.” We need to be more creative!

There’s also a version with John Legend if you care to view it. I don’t think he was needed either. Estelle, you got this!

Estelle’s new album All Of Me is due out September.

New Music Post: Drake, Estelle, And The Roots

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on May 24, 10

Drake – “Unforgettable” Feat. Jeezy [Download]

Another down-tempo, R&B ish flavored joint from Drake that has leaked and it features Jeezy. It also features an Aaliyah sample from her cover of “At Your Best” by The Isley Brothers. This sounds like something more from So Far Gone, and I think at this point, that is exactly what Drake needs. His old fans aren’t connecting with his new material and his new fans are connecting with his new material either LOL. Jeezy has some nice bars on this too. This is in the pocket!

The Roots – “Dear God 2.0″ Feat. Jim James (My Morning Jacket) & Monsters of Folk [Download]

Wow, I have heard Jim James a couple of times on some My Morning Jacket songs, but on the whole it’s not my preferred genre of listening. However, leave it to The Roots to flip that script. I am loving this joint, and it all works. The instrumentation, the tempo, the myriad of sounds and the production working to put it all together…I like it. June 22nd, new Roots! The tracklist looks interesting, too.

Estelle – “Fall In Love” [Download]

I think Estelle’s first song to drop, “Freak”, might have been TOO much, video and song wise. It wasn’t bad, but the shock value was high, the music was uber-dancey and it was just totally in your face. So, she follows up with “Fall In Love” which has hit the web. Where “Freak” was too much, I think “Fall In Love” is a little TOO safe. Estelle hopefully won’t suffer the sophmore jinx Stateside, because she has grown on me a lot. This song isn’t bad, but I def don’t see this becoming a huge hit…

Reflection Eternal Rock Until The “Midnight Hour” With Estelle

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 11, 10

Despite this beat’s whimsical beat and retro-esque video, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek are basically talking about getting it on in this song. LOL, just classier. And of course they add Estelle to complete the songs retro/soulful vibe. It’s a good fit sonically with the vibe of the track.

However, I feel like Talib is still operating on some “”et’s flood em with the underground joints and then a radio song! Yeah! That’s the ticket!”, you know what I mean?

Either way, I enjoy this song. I don’t think I could listen to it many many times though. Their joint with Bun B is still on rotation though. Revolutions Per Minute is due out May 18th, which is next week. Will you be looking into that?

      Donnis In Reverse Equals “Gone”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 13, 10

Donnis, a rapper that was buzzing and finally got picked up by a major (people still aspire to that these days?) by the name of Atlantic Records has dropped his first official single and video off at MTV. The video was directed by bbgun and features Donnis replaying the nights back in his head while partying it up at Estelle’s house.

The hook on this song is a little monotone for me and gets old fast, but dude has a few nice lines sprinkled throughout. There were times he looked like Ne-Yo though, is it just me?! I think it was just the camera and lighting LOL.

I Want Off Of Robin Thicke’s “Rollacoasta” Please!

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 19, 10

I’m a little disturbed because this was one of the songs I liked off of Sex Therapy, but I will freely admit it was because of the track. It’s all dance-y and techno-lite and I love those kinds of joints. Estelle’s vocals even fit the song pretty well. Robin Thicke’s presence really is overwhelmed by the music though. “Rollacoasta” is a nice little jam, but let’s talk about this video.

The whole bougie party scene just gives me the vibe that it’s a bunch of types that are doing lines in the bathroom of this huge mansion, wiping powder off their noses after “auditioning” for a role in the adjacent bedroom. It’s a little stiff despite their “appearance” of having a good time. I get the dolly/camera effect that primarily dominates this video, but Robin Thicke dancing has proven once again to be his anti-sexy.

He comes off SO CORNY with all these little affected moves and gestures LOL. Estelle is still rocking that mushroom hair, which was more interesting to look at than Robin Thicke’s moves. Estelle looks great, but bored. Get that check though. There were other better songs on his album, like “In The Morning” IMO that would have been better singles. *shrugs*

Estelle Gets Her “Freak” On, Indeed

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 3, 10

Estelle unleashes the video for the just leaked first single off of her All of Me album, “Freak”.

“Freak” indeed! This video is bananas. I feel like it aspires to Missy Elliott greatness but falls a little flat. Estelle kicks off in Black(er)-face, which is really just off-putting, even if it wasn’t mean in anyway to be other than body paint. The stark contrast between that and her lips almost gives her mouth this disembodied property.

Lots of random fashions, cut-frame dancing, lots of kaleidoscopic visuals, random colors and wigs. It’s just a little crazy and it makes me like the song a little bit less. I see what Estelle and director Nabil were doing, but it comes off a bit disjointed and, a little too freaky really. I think it could have gone somewhere more cohesive but Estelle said “NO MAKE IT CRAZY! I’M DOING THINGS DIFFERENT!” and this is what we got.

New Music: Estelle, Raheem DeVaughn & Aloe Blacc

Estelle – “Freak” (Prod. by David Guetta) [Listen & Download]

Estelle’s ready to unleash her inner-freak on the US with her second album All of Me, which is due soon. “Freak” is the first single from the album, and it features Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishal. The video should be dropping soon and was directed by Nabil, who’s recently done a lot of work with Kanye West. The kids are going to love this — I can see ya’ll emailing me the hot mess youtube videos right now.

It works for Estelle though, though it’s a great departure from her “American Boy” sounds — I think this sounds more like her early UK work, which a lot of US folks aren’t necessarily as familiar with. The “Back To Life” sample on the hook seems, odd? It works but I always get to that part and cringe a bit. This’ll have to grow on me! David Guetta is everywhere…

Raheem DeVaughn – “The Greatness” Feat. Wale [Listen + Download]

Raheem DeVaughn’s The Love & War Masterpeace is out tomorrow, but a new joint has hit the nets from the project which features Wale. “The Greatness” is an easy breezy swing & synth affair with some choice words by Wale. If you didn’t like “Bulletproof”, chances are you will still be able to find something that you like from Raheem’s latest project. You can go view the stream and snippets at Amazon if you’re really interested.

Aloe Blacc – “I Need A Dollar” [Listen & Download] [Buy] [Official Site]

Aloe Blacc has the theme song for HBO’s new show “How To Make It In America” which also features the ever expanding his money Kid Cudi. “I Need A Dollar” is a soul joint from a hip-hopper that dabbles in Latin rhythms, soul vocals and more. Some have called him the “West Coast Mos Def”. “I Need A Dollar” is all Aloe featuring prodution by Truth & Soul. This sounds like something from the 80′s-era Blaxploitation days — like straight out of “American Gangster” or something, doesn’t it? It’s different but it definitely is catchy and makes you sit up and pay attention. I’ve featured Aloe once or twice, he’s a pretty engaging and interesting underground MC. Hopefully this’ll get him more shine though.

Estelle & David Guetta Give Out Hope And “One Love”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 2, 09

I’m sorry, David Guetta’s face in this clip…he looks like a sad clown! What is going on!?

Anyway LOL, in this clip for the 3rd single (which is also the title cut) from his album (after “When Love Takes Over” w/ Kelly Rowland and *gag* “Sexy Bitch” with Akon), Estelle croons and David drives (Get it? He’s the DJ!) around the city passing out love and hope via dance music. Pop-locking bums? #wheretheydothatat?

This song itself is low-key enjoyable though, though I’m not sure how I feel about Estelle getting her Fairy Godmother on LOL. David Guetta’s album One Love is in stores now and has been a hit all over the world.

      Thoughts?
