This is HILARIOUS.
Jimmy Kimmel and that “accent” and Drake wearing that doo-rag? That just sent off fireworks in my MIND HAHAHA.

Drake took to the stage of The Tonight Show to continue his search for love, Prozac, and emo hip-hop chicks last night. He’s riding high on the debut of his Thank Me Later project, which sits at #1 with first-week sales of 447,000. That’s pretty nice. Hopefully the drop-off next week isn’t massive, though it’s sure to be knocked from #1 with Eminem projected to sell upwards of 600K!
But let’s be clear — this negro is an R&B singer. LOL I just can’t with him being “hip-hop’s savior” but he is essentially R&B crooning all the time. I feel like I should be judging this performance as I would an R&B singer, and NOT a hip-hop artist! I’m so confused. The beginning was a little touch-and-go however, but he recovered nicely.
I keep trying to listen to his album, and it is SO depressing overall. Just the vibe and lyrics and tone…Drake needs to find his inner joy!

Drake – “Unforgettable” Feat. Jeezy [Download]
Another down-tempo, R&B ish flavored joint from Drake that has leaked and it features Jeezy. It also features an Aaliyah sample from her cover of “At Your Best” by The Isley Brothers. This sounds like something more from So Far Gone, and I think at this point, that is exactly what Drake needs. His old fans aren’t connecting with his new material and his new fans are connecting with his new material either LOL. Jeezy has some nice bars on this too. This is in the pocket!

The Roots – “Dear God 2.0″ Feat. Jim James (My Morning Jacket) & Monsters of Folk [Download]
Wow, I have heard Jim James a couple of times on some My Morning Jacket songs, but on the whole it’s not my preferred genre of listening. However, leave it to The Roots to flip that script. I am loving this joint, and it all works. The instrumentation, the tempo, the myriad of sounds and the production working to put it all together…I like it. June 22nd, new Roots! The tracklist looks interesting, too.

Estelle – “Fall In Love” [Download]
I think Estelle’s first song to drop, “Freak”, might have been TOO much, video and song wise. It wasn’t bad, but the shock value was high, the music was uber-dancey and it was just totally in your face. So, she follows up with “Fall In Love” which has hit the web. Where “Freak” was too much, I think “Fall In Love” is a little TOO safe. Estelle hopefully won’t suffer the sophmore jinx Stateside, because she has grown on me a lot. This song isn’t bad, but I def don’t see this becoming a huge hit…

OK, this album cover is kind of hot. The songs are not, but this artwork is pretty nifty. Though it probably says something that this dudes FACE and HEAD are just ALL covered up. LOL. Love King comes out June 29th, and also features the next single “Make Up Bag” with T.I. Peep the artwork for that after the jump…
Again, I can’t get over the fact that Drake is singing and doing R&B hooks on other people’s records (see Alicia Keys’ “Unthinkable). The fact that Lil’ Wayne goes to jail and all his Young Money artists start singing (see Nicki Minaj’s new single “Your Love”, which features a very GANGSTA Annie Lennox sample)!
I mean, this video tries to be dramatic and suspenseful, but you really can already tell what is going to happen. This song is just pretty dreadful to me. Depressing, Kanye-esque vibe mixed with some Trey Songz on vocal steroids singing and some Auto-tune thrown in for radio consideration. For some reason I feel like…this isn’t hip-hop. BARELY is rap.
I’m spent LOL.

There may be a Bad Boys 3 happening in the very near future, ON TOP of Men In Black 3 being confirmed! [Coming Soon]
We live in a world where Bobby Brown is getting engaged and where Chilli can’t get a man. Wow. [People]
Betty White was HILARIOUS on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Seriously. I cannot stop laughing at “Wizard of Ass”. Check the clip above! Jay-Z was the musical host, but I wasn’t especially moved by any of his performances. Though his drummer Tony Royster, Jr. is one of my personal favorites.
RIP Lena Horne, one of the pioneering Black actresses in her own right and also a fantastic and emotionally captivating singer. Most folks of the younger generation will remember her as Glenda the Good Witch from “The Wiz”, which also featured Michael Jackson :( [New York Times]
Don’t forget ya’ll — Drake can ACT too! Looking for the right material though…. [MTV News]
Listen to snippets from Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid, which is due out May 18th. Seems very theatrical, dark yet light and operatic. I think the singles may have been a bit misleading…but still great music nonetheless.
This is the cover for Drake’s Thank Me Later which is dropping June 15th, 2010.
I personally think it’s a bit headache inducing. Do the iTunes downloads come with a magical decoder key to remove the 3-D effect? LOL I can’t look at it for more than 3 seconds without my eyes crossing. And is that a beard, or just the weird effects and shadowing?
I don’t know man, with all the people that I am sure are throwing themselves at him to work with him, I’m SURE he could have done better. J. Cole’s single cover for “Who Dat” was better than this, personally.
*kanyeshrug* let’s all scratch our heads together…

Drake – “Find Your Love” [Download]
Yo, I’m all for an R&B song right? But, Drake is a hip-hop artist. So many questions!
Honestly, the first thing that popped in my mind when I heard this that I keep seeing around the nets? “Dreckitude”. Sad dreck, dreadful, drab, a wreck! For your 2nd single? “Over” wasn’t exactly moving the crowds either from what I can tell. I hope this album doesn’t drop the ball, though I’m trying not to judge albums by their singles anymore. Meh.
Coachella (a huge music festival in Indio, CA) was this past weekend and Jay-Z brought out his wife Beyonce’ to sing the hook on “Forever Young”. Umm, do you see those boots? Wow. Only Bee. This performance was nice though, and she stayed in pocket. Very understated but she held it down in support of her man. Nice!
Drake, Chris Brown & more after the jump…
Drake had the singular conundrum of crafting a video for his first official single, “Over”, after the mini-debacle that was his “Best I Ever Had” clip.
So how does one of the most anticipated artists ever rise up against his critics and naysayers to make a great video that everyone loves?
Well I don’t know the answer to that, and neither does Drake either I’m thinking LOL.
While this clip for “Over” isn’t bad, I think it’s a bit too abstract and obtuse to really make a lot of sense to his hip-hop fans. Not saying that the average hip-hop fan isn’t smart per se, but I think a certain majority of them will immediately bypass this video thinking “What?!” He goes to the total opposite end of the spectrum in that regard.
However, the Anthony Mandler directed video has a James Bond-esque feel to it — like something you’d see at the beginning of a new James Bond movie as a theme. I’m not sure why, it just does. Drake is bombarded with images, lights and sounds, which to me can be interpreted to mirror real life as a new and budding celebrity. The images are “crazy” at times, which I am sure mirrors his life and mind right now. Overstimulated would be the word I would use. And of course, there are the women. I’m going to surmise that amongst all of this movement and ascension in his life to the top (the clouds), there’s ONE specific woman he wants that he can’t have. She’s the classy, grown and mature woman that he wants but that his crazy life won’t allow him to have.
So if you look beyond Drake sitting on a bed or just standing up doing his crazy rap/Missy Elliott ticks and moves, and look at the imagery behind and around him, this video makes more sense. Yes Drake is a crossover artist, but at the end of the day, is he really losing his “hip-hop” sensibilities? Time will tell. It’s definitely better than Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack”…
