    • Coverage: B. Slade Does A Vocally Titillating Cover Of Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 12

Innovative, outspoken and vibrant artist B. Slade has aimed his considerable vocal at covering a classic Prince song (and one of my favorite Prince songs ever), “If I Was Your Girlfriend”.

      B. Slade gives the treatment a more laid-back swing groove that highlights his jazzy yet solid vocal. It’s missing all of the deep, sexy, sultry and prominent bass licks of the original, but the focus should really be on B. Slade’s vocal. His range and layering alone are worth a couple of extra listens.

It’s a different approach that is wholly different from most other versions, but B. Slade’s light, airy, distinct and expansive range handle the vocal exceptionally well.

What do you think of this cover? One of my favorite covers of this song will always be Daniel de Bourg’s version, which I posted a while ago.

Coverage: Pink’s Vocal Is On Fire With Her Live Cover Of “Girl On Fire”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 6, 12

      I love Pink.

Do I really need to say anything else?

Pink thoroughly smashes Alicia Keys‘ “Girl On Fire”. I think I’m on record as saying it’s not as if I don’t like the song, I just really don’t like Alicia’s version of the vocal.

I’m hoping that Alicia Keys becomes an elder stateswoman of R&B, kind of like a Carole King-type to this genre. She’s a very decent songwriter in her own right, and I’ve enjoyed some of her creations but as of late, I’ve never been a fan of her vocals or her much-lauded piano playing skills. Pink thoroughly laying waste to “Girl On Fire” proves the song is very decent when sung well.

Pink rocks it out, yet hits the notes and makes it very much a Pink song. Overall, I still think it needs to be dropped a half step to make anyone singing this song not sound as if they are straining, but at least Pink makes that strain sound rocking and authentic. With Alicia, it just sounds a mess…

You can also download the cover here!

Coverage: Bilal Does Stevie, Jade Novah Does Ke$ha & Daniel de Bourg Does Miguel

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

Bilal is putting out new music! He’s released a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” as the first taste of his The Retrospection mixtape. I’ve always been a fan of Bilal — his quirky ear for music and singularly original talent is always welcome in such a crowded field of homogenous music stars. The mixtape drops on December 5th on his Facebook page apparently. In typical Bilal fashion, he makes this song his own — jazzes it up and smooths it out, with plenty of falsetto ad-libs to satiate your palette for good singing. Let me know what you think!

Jade Novah (@JadeNovah)is quickly making a mark, thanks to her cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. The well produced cover & video have over 9 MILLION VIEWS. Jade, no stranger to covers, has kept the momentum going. Her and her producer Mr. Devinaire have done it again with a pretty imaginative, original and yet true to the source cover of Ke$ha’s “Die Young”. Jade always manages to turn the songs I don’t like into songs I DO like — I love her version of “Call Me Maybe”! The quality and sheer music perfection that is her covers is pretty awesome though, and she doesn’t disappoint this go round either.

Related: Jade Novah’s cover of “Die In Your Arms” by Justin Bieber was also dope!

This is one sanging yt man. Seriously. I’ve been a fan of his covers ever since he did this bomb version of Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend”, and from time to time, I check in on Mr. Daniel de Bourg to see what he’s cooked up. Last week, he put out a cover of Miguel’s “Do You…”, which is one of the songs I really liked on his last album. Daniel doesn’t really do too much in the way of altering it, but he still sounds pretty dope singing it (which has never been a problem). It always trips me out to hear that voice come from that man, you know? Do you think he should have left this one alone?

Coverage: Up & Coming Singer Rudy Currence Covers Miguel’s R&B Hit “Adorn”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 6, 12

I’ve been a Rudy Currence fan for a while since his Digital Analog mixtape came across my ears awhile ago [cop the download here of that great project]. I know that at one time he was signed to Ludacris’ Disturbin’ The Peace label, but I’ve not heard much traction from that either. He’s on Twitter though at @Rudy_Currence, so make sure you hit him up and tell him where you saw his dope cover of Miguel’s “Adorn”.

Rudy has chops and I wish more singers like him were in the national spotlight…

Miguel’s “Adorn” quickly became a favorite of mine as well. The full version and video are here if you’ve yet to see them!

Coverage: Noah’s “Sexy” And He Knows It, But His Voice Is Even More Amazing…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 30, 12

      This totally caught me unawares.

I was directed to this video earlier this week, and, WOW, Noah does his GOOD singing and cover of LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It”. I don’t even need to say anything. Just watch.

I hate this song but I’m so going to buy his cover!

Coverage: Jade Novah Gives New Life To Justin Bieber’s “Die In Your Arms”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 9, 12

      Wow.

Now, I’ve been a fan of Jade Novah ever since her mixtape dropped (which you can still get here!) and someone tweeted me to check it out. Her covers of “Call Me Maybe/Domino”, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “Countdown”, and her original “Maniac” STAY in rotation over here. Such a great talent.

However, she’s kicked it up another notch so much that I have to give her her own post y’all. This girl is phenomenal. Her cover of Justin Bieber’s “Die In Your Arms” (which, I will admit, I already loved….) is dope. She flips it crazily into a 60′s sounding joint (and the accompanying visual is ALSO top notch quality) and makes it her own, as she’s always done with her covers. I’m a huge fan of hers and y’all should be too. Her producer is a beast as well — shouts to whoever is meticulously crafting all these beds and arrangements man.

Lowkey, that Justin Bieber goes…there’s about 5-6 songs that are so well written, even if he wasn’t singing them, they’d still be great. Glad to see Jade take on something but give it a whole other vibe and shelf life.

Cop that mixtape, and tweet @JadeNovah and tell her Tha Feedback sent ya!

Classic Flashback + Coverage: Dionne Warwick Sings Stevie Wonder’s “All In Love Is Fair”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 12, 12

This clip is a master class of interpretation, vocalization, talent, grace and skill.

If you follow me on Twitter or any other medium, you’ve seen my latest musical delve into a classic catalogue with the discovery of the depth and skill of Dionne Warwick back in her heyday.

She’s come to be known as the older crotchety woman was apt to call people “hussy” on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice”, and even as a punchline on YouTube parody show “Got 2B Real”, but back in the late 70′s, Dionne Warwick served as the muse for iconic songwriters Burt Bacharach & Hal David, and was an consumate song stylist and interpreter of their captivating lyrics and catalog. In addition to that pair, she also worked with such legends as Isaac Hayes, The Bee Gees, Luther Vandross, and even Barry Manilow.

If you watch this performance, I guarantee you will get goosebumps. You can even see where Whitney Houston gets her influences from a lot throughout this (and other) Dionne Warwick performances. “All In Love Is Fair” is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs, but Dionne’s version live in this clip absolutely brings me to my knees.

Give credit to what’s she did even if you aren’t familiar now with who she is. Other favorites of mine that Dionne sings are also “Alfie”, “You’re Gonna Need Me”, “After You”, “Deja Vu” and more.

Leave some thoughts if you have them!

More Coverage: Usher Rocks His “Pumped Up Kicks” In The UK

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 12

      More COVERAGE for you today!

Usher took the BBC Radio 1 airwaves to rock out and show off his guitar skills to the world with his cover of Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”. I didn’t know Usher could play the bass, but one would hope after such a long lengthy career being around all these amazing musicians that he’d pick up another instrument outside of his golden chops.

I still laugh at this song because it’s a very morbid song, and Usher is lowkey taking it to church. But you know, a hot pop song is a hot pop song. And Usher wants to prove that he is on top of things in the world — have you heard his latest album Looking 4 Myself yet? Point proven LOL!

What y’all think of Usher rocking out with his fauxhawk out?

Coverage: Celine Dion Randomly Emerges, Singing Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 13, 12

Yes, this is random! The audio isn’t even very good. However, I don’t care. I am definitely a Celine Dion fan, I make no qualms about that. I’m also an Adele fan, so there’s that.

I’m not sure where this came from, where it was recorded, or whatever, but I’m here to tell you that I can definitely support this notion. I’d love to hear Celine Dion re-record this in a studio or do it live in a controlled environ outside of someone’s camera phone recording. But beggars can’t be choosy, right?

Celine Dion is one of the most fantastic voices of our generation, in my opinion. Like her or not, the woman can SANG. I WANT TO HEAR THIS RECORDED!

And this tweet from one of my followers made me laugh:

Coverage: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Have The “Inner City Blues”, Too.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 27, 12

Yooooo, I’ve been a fan of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour for a while. The Danish group is soulful, funky, and I’ve enjoyed their album Fruit for a couple of months now. Despite the fact that it’s been out for a couple of years, LOL.

SOMEHOW I missed this cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” though. For whatever reason now, I can’t stop spinning it. I grabbed a video of a live performance they did in France of this song, and it goes just as hard as their recorded version.

It’s amazing how soul and it’s messages travel and translate across the world. I think this cover does the original justice. Who knew that Danes even had “inner cities”? And why are ALL the international groups these days doing “soul music” better than the country that originated it? Something to think about…
