    • Chrisette Michele’s Asking For “A Couple Of Forevers” And I’ll Give Them Gladly!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 18, 13

I’ve been a little perplexed with Chrisette Michele’s career as of late. She’s recently released a free mixtape but had kind of quiet on the scene for awhile. Judging from her Twitter, she’s been working steadily, but her music output seemed to have dropped after her last album, which I really wasn’t a fan of. Her sounds has seemed to mature but also have gotten a bit more eclectic as she broke away from the sound I’m sure her label had always championed. Her song “Charades” could have gone over more smoother in my opinion without the tacking on of a 2 Chainz verse, but I feel as if it went largely went unnoticed by all but the diehard fans.

However, with “A Couple Of Forevers”, Chrisette has reignited my interest in her solo output. “A Couple Of Forevers” is a rich, warm song that she tackles with much aplomb. I feel as if she’s more interested in this material and thus sings it with a renewed vigor and gravitas. It especially ramps up at the end on the ad-libs — it seems as if Chrisette is in a place vocally that is still strong and rooted in an even more soulful way. Producers Pop & Oak created a fantastic musical bed for her to emote and stretch her vocals over as well. It all works and congeals together very well, and in a very organic and authentic way.

“A Couple Of Forevers” is the proper single from her upcoming album Better that is slated to drop April 20th, and I for one am looking forward to it if she’s going to deliver a body of work that is full of singles/songs like this. Are you a fan? Does this song pique your interest in her music again? Did you download the mixtape? Let us know!

Do We Feel Like Playing Along With Chrisette Michele’s “Charades”?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 2, 12

I’m going to keep it 100% real — I’ve never been a huge fan of Chrisette Michele, but this new music of hers that has been leaking has been leaving me a little lost. Maybe I need to watch this a few more times, but I’m not really “digging” it. She sounds good, yes. It feels very Chrisette Michele. “Charades” is taken from her upcoming (12/8) mixtape Audrey Hepburn:An Audiovisual Presentation, but I can’t say that based off of what I’ve heard that I’m excited about it.

Chrisette goes black and white in this video however to give it that classic feel. I’m just very throw off by this WHOLE presentation. Maybe after a couple more listens, it’ll stick with me, but after a a couple of watches of this video in hopes of getting it, I still don’t. Her stans will probably gush over this, so if one of you are reading, please explain to the rest of the class why you like this.

Chrisette is definitely talented and works what she has, but one wonders — is she still signed to a label? Is she indie? I feel like she’s the type of personality that is very independent, but at the same time, the majors probably reigned her in and made her art translatable to the rest of us. Think about it.

      Thoughts?

Disembodied Hands, Furry Heels, And Darkness Describes Chrisette Michele’s “Goodbye Game”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 17, 10

Chrisette Michele really has some big eyes, but they are kinda beautiful.

Other than the disembodied hands reaching out from the dark (that scared me, BTW), this video was pretty ho-hum. This song really needed a strong video I feel like for it to really connect with us, the listeners. I feel like there is a deep message I should be getting from this song, but everytime she sings it, I find myself kind of staring off into space.

I like Chrisette, I do, but she has really lost me this album cycle. And it’s a little sad that her video has been up for two days on VEVO, and hasn’t even had 500 views yet…I don’t think that bodes well.

Chrisette Michele’s Sings “Goodbye Game”; Has Anyone Heard This Song?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 16, 10

I feel like Chrisette Michele is slipping away as a viable commercial artist, and I don’t know why. I also hear she’s most likely gonna be dropped and will be doing her own albums independently. For some reason, I can see that.

The ballerinas, the backup singers in the headwraps from 1998, the shorn head of Ms. Michele, and even this song…I just feel like she’s lost touch with her fanbase. Half of the world didn’t like her last album, and the other half haven’t even bothered to pick up this new one Let Freedom Reign. I’m going to admit that I haven’t even heard it yet. None of the singles have really connected with me, and even while performing this song, despite her usual performance antics, I feel like she was disconnected and not in the moment. She was there, performing, but she wasn’t invested in what was going on from each moment to moment.

And that’s where she has lost us. Vocally, she sounds fine. She sounds like herself. And she performs like herself. But…where’s the connection? Are you feeling it?

And I cracked up at George Lopez grabbing her head and giving her a kiss…did ya’ll catch that!?

Chrisette Michele Reaffirms Her Stardom In New Video For New Single “I’m A Star”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 8, 10

Now, I’m a fan of Chrisette Michele. Ya’ll know this. Again though, I feel as if she is a very polarizing artist — either people like her or they flat out don’t. There’s any number of reasons why, but to each their own.

All I know is that I’m not really feeling this new single at all. Sure, she sounds cool and is one of the best in her own way. And she looks flawless. But…that’s about it. It’s hard for me personally to connect with this song, and that was BEFORE I saw the video. After watching this video, I was even a bit MORE lost. Chrisette seems…disconnected from the rest of the world in this video. I feel like she dressed up, stood in the front of the cameras, but didn’t REALLY want to be there. Does that make sense?

“I’m A Star” is her first single from her new album Let Freedom Reign, which drops this week. I bought her last album sight unseen besides the first singles, and I imagine I will do the same again. I hope we get some classic Chrisette material from this album. She definitely has it in her deserves to be a much bigger “star” than she already is IMO. I feel like the setup for this album has been pretty lacking, and it’s a 4th quarter release. Come on Def Jam….get it together!

Chrisette Michele Is A “Star” That’s Shining, Can You See Her?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 9, 10

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Chrisette Michele tweeted the other day about her new single “Baby I’m A Star” and sent her followers to iTunes to cop it…only to find it wasn’t there. Def Jam #fail.

It’s finally hit the web and while it’s nothing to make me jump the moon over, it’s good to see her back on the grind. Chrisette is a singular talent, and as polarizing as she is, she is still very talented.

The song itself however comes off as the less-sophisticated cousin of the last album’s filler cuts — something that Ne-Yo foisted upon her at the last minute because he was too busy working on Libra Scale to be bothered. I hope this sound isn’t indicative of her new album…

Chrisette Michele Put On Her “Sunday Best” And Slayed The House

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 30, 10

BET’s “Sunday Best” this season has been pretty interesting, and they’ve had a special guest open up the show each week — last week was Chrisette Michele. She sung judge Donnie McClurkin’s hit song “Stand” and absolutely laid waste to the audience (in person and at home).

She put her own spin on this classic and did her good singing! I didn’t know what to expect when she came out, but she took that Chrisette Michele tone, and worked out some of those notes in her own way and gave the song new life for a brief moment. I absolutely enjoyed — and it actually was the highlight of that whole episode.

I’m #TeamLeandria all the way, in case you were wondering. Leandria Johnson absolutely NEEDS to win and if she doesn’t it’ll be another disappointment from BET, but I’m kind of used to those at this point. Here’s a bad video of her LAYING WASTE to “In The Midst of It All” by Yolanda Adams.

Music Video: Chrisette Michele – “Fragile (Remix)” (Feat. Wale)

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 3, 09

Who writes her music video treatments? I love Chrisette, Patti LaBelle-esque facial ticks and performance theatrics aside, but these videos from her latest album have all been pretty terrible and just unfocused. This video is no different.

They’ve remixed the song to add Wale’s verse, and it starts off the video, which takes away from the cohesiveness of the original song and just starts the video off on an bewildering tip. PLUS, Wale’s so dark-skinned (no shade), but the lighting of him standing against a dark city backdrop is non-existent, so it’s even hard to see him much less understand why he’s rapping about whatever he’s rapping about.

From there it just degenerates into a beauty shop scene, street shots, them holding hands for 5 seconds, and her walking into a hotel. None of which is really tied together nicely for us to understand what is going on. You can guess, but jeez.

The pacing is off, the lighting is off…everything just needs to be better. Chrisette stay losing with videos, but at least the album by itself is full of enough win for me to just act like this all never happened.

Live Performances: Chrisette Michele Slays “Blame It On Me”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 22, 09

I feel that the topic of Chrisette Michele is such a polarizing one amongst singers and lovers of music. Either you like her or you don’t. Some feel that she puts on airs when she sings and that she just does the most — others feel like her voice is truly unique and original and think she’s the second coming.

Well, I tend to straddle the fence between the two and I think you can see why from this performance.

Truly there’s no one whose voice SOUNDS like hers out right now. She has this awesome timbre and tone to her voice. At the same time, I think I would have enjoyed this performance more if I closed my eyes and just listened. There was a tad bit too much hand/eye/body arrangement  movement and positioning going on if that makes a lot of sense.

The way she held herself when she sung and looked was just off-putting to me, but she sounded great. Homegirl worked that song and gave it the business! NO doubt about that. Mo’Nique has been getting a lot of good performances lately…

Some people feel that her latest album went to “crossover” sounding and took away her quirkiness. I think it gave her a more polished sound and rounded out the rough edges. And so the debate goes…
