    • Do You “Want” Luke James Like He Wants You?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 18, 12

      This song?

      Absolutely.

Let me tell you why I like it — Mr. James is doing his absolute best singing on this here record. The falsetto is so sudden and powerful (though I want to see him do this live, in person) that it snatches your attention immediately and makes you sit UP and take notice to the amount of skill he is just busting out of nowhere.

And then on top of that, the time signature changes and is a bit off putting, but once you get it, it’s refreshing. And it may take you a couple of listens. It reminds me of Chris Brown’s “Crawl” a bit because I remember when it started off, I was like, this is interesting. Then it develops into this other song that it makes you sit and listen and take the whole thing in.

I remember Luke James from his J Records days in the group Luke & Q, which never really got off the ground. Glad to see him still sticking around, writing hits (is it any wonder — guess what his song credits are? He co-wrote “Crawl”), and now getting his own chance to shine. His voice has an air of authenticity and warm, soulful overtones that bode well for a solo career in my opinion. The ladies will like the video of course, but I’m still sold on the song.

      That’s what really matters.

His EP, #Luke, is available now (I found this link here), and if you need more convincing, check out his acapella rendition here.

The IPS Blogs: Quick Thoughts On The Chris Brown vs. Frank Ocean Twitter Beef

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 17, 11

Yoooo, so if you been MIA today, Chris Brown complimented Frank Ocean today via Twitter. Allegedly. Frank Ocean took it the wrong way, and went left on Chris Brown. Then Tyler the Creator got involved and started going HAM on Chris Brown Goblin style.

The players — Chris Brown…well, he’s Chris Brown. Frank Ocean is a “new” (I use that loosely) artist/singer/songwriter that has been in the biz for a while, but is now going under the name Frank Ocean and is getting acclaim and radio spins of his song “Novacane”, which is from a “free” album that he released on the Internet a couple of months ago. I posted that here. We also just posted his new video here. Tyler the Creator is from the Odd Future gang — a loosely affiliated group of artists/label that is getting major burn by all the critics and press outlets as one of the next big things. Tyler is the “leader” of Odd Future, which Frank Ocean is also a part of.

I took to the video world real quick to drop some thoughts. While it’s not a comprehensive overview of the situation by any means, watch the vid to see my thoughts. Was this a ploy by the label to get Frank Ocean some press as they are about to re-release his “free” album Nostalgia, Ultra to retail? Or was this just a case of some tweets gone awry?

I originally thought they may have been on the same labels, but I was wrong. Still, you never know…

Just sharing my thoughts. Have a good weekend!

Chris Brown Wants Us To Believe He Is “Hip Hop” But Will You Bite?

Written by Donovan in Videos on Jun 17, 11

I take Chris Brown as a rapper as seriously as I took Tyrese and Brandy. At least they had their alter-ego names so when it didn’t work out they could be like “nah that was my Bran’Nu phase” and distinguish their varying bodies of work.

On “Real Hip Hop Shi*t #2″ Brown is talking about one of the main staples of a rapper’s vocabulary: women. And what seemed to be effective and fresh on “Look At Me Now” has now become a stale attempt to diversify himself musically. Neither the video or the song are anything to brag about, and rumor has it that his next mixtape will be filled with – you guessed it – rap. So am I the only person not taking him seriously? What should his rapping alter-ego be? My vote is for Dirty Blonde Boxer.

New Music: Remixes & Remakes — Chris Brown, Kelly Rowland, And Rye Rye

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jun 15, 11

Chris Brown feat. SWV – “She Ain’t You (Remix)”

Here is the remix to Chris Brown‘s “She Ain’t You” off of his F.A.M.E. LP which samples the classic Michael Jackson tune “Human Nature” and features new vocals from SWV. First off, SWV still sound great and I am reminded of when they flipped this sample on their hit “Right Here” which also still sounds great. Although their isn’t much variation from the original, this is still a smooth song that does a good job at showcasing Brown’s lower ranges and something I would put on for a night drive with my girl.

Kelly Rowland – “Motivation (Remix)” (feat. Busta Rhymes, Fabolous & Trey Songz)

Kelly Rowland is finally going to drop her 3rd album Here I Am due out on July 26, 2011. Here is the 50-leventh single for her urban hit “Motivation” but is supposedly the official one featuring Fabolous, Trey Songz of the Warblers and of course my favorite living rapper Busta Rhymes. Rhymes kicks it off and does the best job at actually adding something to the track. Songz… does what he does. Fabo sounds uninspired as has become his signature of late. My verdict: Press stop after Busta.

Rye Rye – “Never Will Be Mine” feat. Robyn by Interscope Records

Rye Rye is the first artist that M.I.A. has signed to her label N.E.E.T. This is the second single from her debut album Go! Pop! Bang! scheduled to be released on June 14, 2011. The remake in question here is Robyn’s “Be Mine” from her eponymous album from 2005 which takes the tempo down to focus on the emotion of the lyrics. Rye Rye has a rapping style that is reminiscent of Lil’ Mama, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about that. However, I do enjoy this song even though it probably won’t be convincing me to go out and cop the album.

Chris Brown Takes It Back To The 90′s With “She Ain’t You” Clip

Written by The IPS in Videos on May 2, 11

OK, Chris Brown. Wait, how old is he? Cause this video was like a mix of all these old videos from the 90′s and 2000′s. I felt like I just watched 112′s “Peaches & Cream”, an Aaliyah video, TLC’s “Waterfalls”, Sisqo’s “Unleash The Dragon”, and something else, all in one LOL.

Chris Brown gets back to dancing, and while tributing his idol Michael Jackson, he also does a lot of (what would be considered) old school dances in this video as well. At first I was like, “what in the world is going on?” but then I got it as it set in. Or maybe I didn’t, but that’s what I’m sticking with.

However, this video did seem kind of just, random. From the clothes, to the graphics, to him flying around, to this random chick singing that part repeatedly, I was just trying to piece it all together. I think I’m just going to leave it here and let y’all decide what you want to do with it. I’m going to say Chris Brown wanted to wear his Easter suit again and dance in in to prove that he’s a bad mofo…

Big Sean’s “My Last” Is Not Really Worth The Last 5 Minutes I Just Gave This Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 28, 11

You know, I see the appeal of Big Sean. There are a couple of joints of his that I like, but I feel like when it comes to making a complete song ready for radio, he can’t seem to step all the way up to the plate. “My Last” should be a breeze in the current state of radio, but it feels like there is a disconnect between his verses and the hook. Almost like the hook and verses were written separately and then put together without someone really making sure that it was the right song from the right Logic studio sessions.

Chris Brown is largely swappable as the hook singer, and Big Sean looks just about as interested as I am in this song. Big Sean shines when he gets in good punchlines. That’s not this song, but that’s my opinion. And this “Can You Stand The Rain” sample went to waste.

However, Big Sean’s Finally Famous album is about to drop May 3rd, so maybe then we will figure out his longevity? Personally, I don’t see it for him, but I’ve been wrong before.

Chris Brown’s “Beautiful People” Video Is A Cut & Paste Affair All Around

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 23, 11

Chris Brown’s video for his next single “Beautiful People” just dropped and it’s a video about Chris playing the “Beautiful People” song for all his celebrity friends — AKA the “beautiful people”. Get it?

I feel like this song would have given way to a bigger, bolder visual. Think Usher’s “Yeah”, but with more 3-D, green screen, Tron-like goodness. That’s the treatment I have in MY head at least. However, we are treated to this. Scooters with The R3j3ctz (dudes who did the Catdaddy), studio sessions, and club reactions.

Personally, this song could have been cut and pasted with any vocalist and it would have the same effect. The Benny Benassi track is nothing special that requires Chris’ voice. I’m sure Kelly Rowland already tried it and passed up on it.

My F.A.M.E. review is being written right now, and it just dropped yesterday if you were looking for it.

Chris Brown Does 106 & Park; Goes Off At Good Morning America

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 22, 11

Chris Brown hit “106 & Park” at BET on Monday to do “Look At Me Now” with Busta Rhymes and of course talk about F.A.M.E., which hits stores today (amongst a bunch of other releases). Expect a review shortly.

Chris’ performance was fun, and he might need to practice a little bit on his rapping part, but of course Busta comes out and gives a MASTER class. It’s so weird hearing Busta rhyme like he used to without his trademark braids cause I had a moment of disconnect LOL.

Also, Chris apparently took to the set of “Good Morning America” and was harassed by Robin Roberts who continuously asked a bunch of Rihanna questions. He went on a tweet rant, deleted it, stormed off the set, and left the show apparently. Well, you know, at this point, I really personally don’t care about the whole Rihanna thing. Let’s also sit Charlie Sheen down and blah blah blah. I’m just gonna review the music for what it is. And that’s the official stance of Tha Feedback. So expect that coming this week!

All Eyes On Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 11, 11

Chris Brown is returning to form with his “Look At Me Now” video, featuring him doing what he does best — dance. Bring in the friends, let’s get urban and gritty and dance in a wareheouse! YEAH!

Honestly, Chris’ few bars that he tries to drop all but become an afterthought when Busta Rhymes hits the track running on this joint. Even Lil Wayne’s contribution falls short to me. Busta thoroughly slays this track, and leaves it dead and bloody IMO.

“Look At Me Now” has definitely grown on me, thanks to the sparse beat. It’s no “Run It”, but I think it might be slightly better than “I Can Transform Ya” in terms of a lead single. Strangely, I think everyone is looking to Weezy to bring the fire, but Busta thoroughly flaunts his veteran status in this joint. And as far as Chris Brown’s rapping — does homie have a slight lisp? LOL and why did I never notice this before? His new album drops on March 22nd, that is, if you haven’t already gotten your hands on F.A.M.E. as it leaked earlier this week…

New Music Post: Chris Brown, Jazmine Sullivan, And Sy Smith with MdCL

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 3, 11

Chris Brown has released a new song called “Look At Me Now”, and while I normally wouldn’t necessarily care, I did listen to this joint because it has Busta Rhymes on it. I love Busta, FACT. Chris Brown is doing more of his mixtape-type of vibe that has been working and earned him some Grammy noms even. His speedy flow is not half bad and while short, it was better than Lil’ Wayne’s. But of course, Busta makes it sound easy and wow, he kills it. Wayne sounds out of breath and like he didn’t work out while he was in the pokey.

Jazmine Sullivan “I’m NoT a RoBoT” by BOOMTUNES

Jazmine Sullivan took to the Twitter-verse to announce that she was taking a break from music, paraphrasing her statement to basically say that she needed time to find herself. Well, one cannot argue the necessity for that sometimes. She’s been around for a long time, behind the scenes AND in front. However, shortly after that, producer and oft-collaborator Salaam Remi tweeted the link to this new song by Jazmine called “I’m NoT a RoBoT”, with lyrics and music that echo this sentiment. Hopefully, Jaz was having a moment because the tweets were deleted shortly afterwards. Her voice is needed, but the lackluster sales of her last album may have been slightly discouraging to her…

During the holidays, music great Teena Marie passed. I was definitely a fan, and it is a shame when a music great passes. Another favorite of mine, Sy Smith, linked up with her oft-collaborator Mark de Clive-Lowe to come up with a reimagining of Teena Marie’s classic hit “Lovergirl” (which is one of my favorites of hers as well). Sy and Mark create a great downtempo feel to the song and their version is creative and cool. Check it out, and let’s say a prayer for Teena’s family.
