  • Live Performances: Brandy Killed “Wildest Dreams” On Black Girls Rock ’12, Did You See It?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

I haven’t heard a vocal performance like this that I’ve loved in a quite awhile. Brandy’s performance of “Wildest Dreams” from this year’s “Black Girls Rock” that aired on BET a few weeks ago was stellar. Why? There were so many small vocal flourishes that were well placed. The control she has over her voice. The timing. The quality of her tone live. Brandy kills so much on this performance — so much so that when I hear this song on the album now, all I ever hear is the live version above.

If you’re a singer, I think you’ll understand this post a bit more. The background vocals were a little touch and go at times, but come on — compared to some of the other performances on that very same show (*coughs Alicia Keys*), Brandy is leaps and bounds above her peers.

This video stays on repeat, and boo to BET for always making me watch a full minute of ads before I can hear this song!

Brandy Is So 90′s With The Visuals For “Wildest Dreams”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 5, 12

Far and away my favorite record on Two Eleven, Brandy gives the fans what they want in the form of a video for her latest single “Wildest Dreams”. Is it just me or is this video channeling 90′s style, looking like a 2012 “I Wanna Be Down” presentation? I don’t say that in a bad way, but in a good way.

I love this song, and while I think the “live performance” treatment was a cool concept — Brandy seems a little bit disconnected from the vocal to me. There are the “warm” moments where she’s just in the frame and it’s in black & white, but yet and still, I didn’t connect with her via moving pictures this time around. However, the style of the video felt VERY 90′s to me. I instantly got nostalgic for first album Brandy, and it made me realize that if you’ve been a Brandy fan for awhile, that’s STILL around! And still in top vocal form. At the end of the day, though the album may suffer from some lackluster songs and the videos haven’t been as dynamic as I would have liked, Brandy’s voice still reigns above most on the charts these days, and that is definitely something that I used to think wasn’t possible anymore — not even in my wildest dreams.

    Thoughts?

Album Review: Brandy’s “Two Eleven” Is A Work Fitting For An R&B Veteran And Diva

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Oct 16, 12

Brandy’s rabid legion of fans have been anticipating this day more than the Mayans had been anticipating the end of the world — the release of her new album Two Eleven. After many years, trials, tribulations, hiatuses, and more, everyone’s favorite singer has returned triumphantly.

Two Eleven is no Full Moon, so let’s just put that aside right now. People want it to be, but it’s not. However, it IS its own well rounded body of work that I’m sure Brandy is proud of. One thing that has never faltered is Ms. Norwood’s vocal skill. Still a fine tuned instrument, it’s on front street once again on her latest solo debut, and fans of that aspect of her as an artist definitely won’t be disappointed.

New Music: Faith Evans Is Out To Prove She’s No Dummy In Love With “Dumb”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Sep 11, 12

faith evans dumb new single r&b divas reality TV TVOne

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Faith Evans has a new single — the 2nd one that she’s released in as many weeks. “Dumb” is apparently the single being released to Urban radio stations, while the other single, “Tears Of Joy”, is being serviced to Urban AC outlets.

I’m a huge fan, and this recalls the more recent offerings of Faith — it sounds like something that would have been crafted for her The First Lady album sessions. It features a sassy Faith waking up from a phase of being romantically hypnotized and breaking out, shedding her love dumbness, and finding her own tack. It’s alright. It’s just that — alright. It’s not a great joint. I feel like Faith has been around long enough to where she needs to be stepping it up and showing these young ones how to do it. With “R&B Divas” putting back into the national spotlight, now would have been a great time to take a musical risk, in my opinion. If it fails, it could have been dubbed as a “promo” for the show or something, and then safe singles like “Tears of Joy” and “Dumb” could have been released.

As it stands, both of these singles are non-starters to me. Faith’s vocal is always one to be appreciated, but with songs like Brandy’s “Wildest Dreams” growing on me VERY quickly, I wish Faith would have come harder. And we won’t even talk about how this “Dumb” record is mixed…

Dawn Richard Is The Glitch In The Musical Matrix With “Automatic” Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 18, 12

A stunning visual from the ever-evolving and growing star in the musical cosmos that we live in, Dawn Richard.

Dawn Richard’s song about becoming independent and breaking away from a lover clearly has shades of reality in both her personal, musical and business relationships. She’s spun a well-written song into another awesome clip, which features her change from emotional automaton to that of an individual with a drastically different style once she’s able to express who she really is.

Enough existentialism and hypotheses though. Dawn’s voice is what music is missing, despite the fact that she’s been to the Brandy Norwood School for Vocalizing. She’s doing Brandy better than Brandy these days, because Brandy’s new single “Put It Down” is not nearly as engaging as Dawn’s “Automatic”, or even “Bombs Away”, her last single. Add to the fact that Dawn’s basically an independent artist, and you have Brandy seemingly being overshadowed by those whom she influenced.

    Dawn’s dancers…amazing.

This video is dope. I’ve been playing her Armor On EP since it came out a few months ago, and I don’t see that ending anytime soon. What do y’all think of Dawn’s latest clip?

Does Brandy Still Have The Chops To “Put It Down” On The Charts?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 27, 12

Brandy’s first single, street or proper, has dropped from her new upcoming sixth solo album titled Two Eleven. It’s the clubby “Put It Down”, and I’m curious to see what people think.

As for me, I’m not entirely sold on it. Vocally, Brandy still sounds fantastic. That voice of hers is still a fine tuned instrument. However, I’m waiting for her to really deliver something CLASSIC. This isn’t classic. It’s cute, it’s trendy. I mean, it features Chris Brown RAPPING. I’m not particularly here for that, but for all intents and purposes, it works.

My main qualm with this song is that it is low on musical melody. It’s a classic Bangladesh beat — heavy on stabs, kick/bass, and light on actual music. Which works for other pop tarts, but not for Brandy. THEE BRANDY. She of the multi-layered compositions that are lush, harmonious and mellifluous. She’s obviously trying to break back into the mainstream with the inclusion of Brown and of using the top-line of producers that are hot at the moment.

That being said, I wish Brandy the best. I’m going and will always be a fan, but I’d like more. I’m happy to have something though! I’d kill for a good collabo with Babyface though. “Sittin’ Up In My Room” was such a well written song IMO. I’ll take anything that features Brandy getting back to those singing roots that made her such a standout at such an early age. You can still hear it peeking through the hum-drum stale R&B that this song is attempting to fit into as she plots her return back to the charts.

The stans love it, I don’t think it will garner any new fans, but at the end of the day — we all agree that her voice is missed and we are hoping she wrecks shop in the very near future.

Umpteen Years Later, Brandy And Monica Are Still Fighting Over A Man.

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 5, 12

We don’t learn lessons? We don’t grow as people and women?

I’m glad Monica and Brandy are back together on a duet. I’m glad that both of their voices sound up to par. I’m even glad Monica steals the shine vocally a bit on this track, despite my initial inclination towards Brandy’s voice. The video showed me that Monica really DID put in work — and Brandy’s vocal came off as a little bit safer.

That being said, I still don’t care for this song, the subject matter, the trite lyrics, this boring video, and the lackadaisical “tribute” to Whitney Houston at the end (the car blowing up was of course a tribute to “Waiting To Exhale” no doubt) all do nothing for me. I want to love this song. I do. But I can’t. It’s so safe! And I wanted more from them besides 4 minutes of glamour shots and old rehashed story lines being passed off as a sequel. I needed more.

Quit tricking off on these dudes. *shrugs*

I’m split. What do y’all think?

Brandy & Monica Take To The Stage To Perform Their First Duet In 14 Years

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 17, 12

This debate will never end, sorry!

While I am glad to see Brandy back behind a microphone, this song really just does nothing for me. I won’t call it terrible, because there’s a lot worse out on the radio right now. But I am not moved by the song at all.

However, the mellifluousness of Brandy’s voice…get into that.

This song is SO low, in terms of the musical key that it is in. And honestly, I feel like it starts that low in order to allow Monica to keep up with Brandy. LOL. Call it what you want. Monica sounds decent enough, but Brandy really shines on this song. Her voice is smoother and has aged well thus far, and I hope it stays classic like the greats. With Whitney gone, we need them! I’ve never been a huge Monica fan but I’m also glad to see her stepping it up, cause I feel like SHE feels like she has to keep up with Brandy in a way. If you ask her that in an interview, I don’t think she’d admit to it LOL.

Has anyone copped the digital download? What do y’all think of this joint? Am I off base? Share your thoughts with the class!

New Music: Brandy & Monica Both File Claims With New Joint “It All Belongs To Me”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 7, 12

Guess who’s back in the mutha mutha house? The object of staunch fans affections of female vocalists that are 90′s babies — Monica Vs. Brandy.

Monica’s new album New Life comes out next month, and she’s already stirring up the pot with this debut of a brand new single from the two vocal ingenues that blew up the 90′s radio charts. After “The Boy Is Mine” became a smash hit for the both of them a decade ago, they’ve reteamed as they are both enjoying careers on the up-tick once again (Brandy, especially). However, this time Rico Love handles the boards and they deliver a sure-to-stir-debate smash of a song in the form of “It All Belongs To Me”.

While I think the lyrical depth of the song is severely lacking, it’s not hard to hear that both of these women are singing for their lives in this new joint. “It All Belongs To Me” is nothing more than a song of reclamation aimed towards the dude they were both previously fighting over (so to speak). The music itself isn’t nearly as catchy as the Darkchild-helmed “The Boy Is Mine”, but new fans of the two won’t hate this song, old fans should be able to appreciate the vocal prowess of the two women, and radio should find something to play other than Ke$ha and Adele.

As the age old debate continues as to who is the “better” singer, I’m going to continue to firmly be on Team Brandy. However, Mo’ does some of the best singing I’ve heard from her in a while on this joint. I’d say that singing with Brandy once again made her step her game up — what do you think? With Brandy working on a new joint, there is still another chapter in this saga yet to be revealed, but at the end of the day, we’re all winners because talent is talent and there isn’t enough of it around anymore like there was back in the 90′s…

Brandy Fights For Success On Her “Own”

Written by Donovan in Blogs on Aug 3, 11

I am a late Brandy fan (throw your hands up Afrodisiac fans) but I have really grown attached to her over the past few years. After seeing her on Family Business I began to feel that her struggle to rise back to the top was sincere and I appreciate the fact that she looks at the work she does even more critically than we do as fans and bloggers.

In this clip we see more of that struggle in a trailer called “On My Own”. It’s unclear whether this will be a full documentary or how it will be released but if it includes documentation of the recording process for her new album then I would be interested in seeing it. I think Brandy should seek out Dawn Richard and do a duet. I would love to hear the two match their unique tones over a more seductive track. A guy can dream! What do you think about Brandy’s career? Can she make it back to the top? Who would you like to see her collaborate with?
