    • Gabby Sidibe To Host Saturday Night Live!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 2, 10

The “Precious” star has broken out that character into more roles as she prepares for a star turn in a Showtime series “The Big C,” which is about a woman struggling with cancer and trying to find humor in the ordeal. She’s also in a new indie movie called “Yelling to the Sky” which hits later this year.

I never imagined however that she’d be on Saturday Night Live! My goal is to host Saturday Night Live before I die — true story. So I am so glad a sister is going to get a turn! Especially one who has had such an overwhelming and successful year! And all this from a girl who has no acting experience. Tell me God isn’t amazing!

I know Kenan Thompson is glad because they work him hard as a black woman LOL. Maybe now he can finally wear some pants instead of a push-up bra. Poor dude.

Gabourey Sidibe’s episode will air on April 24th and will feature the music group MGMT. Don’t know who MGMT is? Check out their latest video for their single “Flash Delirium” after the jump!

Yolanda Adams Sanctifies The White House With “How Great Thou Art” + Other Performances

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 13, 10

      Umm…Yolanda did that.

      That’s ALL I’m gonna say!

The White House did a “Celebration of Music From The Civil Rights Movement” recently and it featured such stars as Yolanda Adams, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and more. Above you see the excellent rendition of “How Great Thou Art” that Yolanda Adams turned in, and after the jump, you can see Jennifer Hudson doing “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and Smokey Robinson and J. Hud doing “People Get Ready”. Lastly, peep Natalie Cole’s “What’s Going On” — her and her bedazzled sling were trying to JAM and I couldn’t stop laughing cause she had the arm in the sling just-a moving. But then…did she forget the words?! She was a bit all over the place too.

I love J. Hud, I do, but neither of her performances moved me. And “People Get Ready” was just A MESS. It sounded unrehearsed, Smokey was flat, and it was just all over the place. Yolanda Adams mopped up! I think Joe Biden almost gave his life to Christ at the end of her performance…

Anika Noni Rose Is Disney’s First Black Princess! Are You Excited?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Dec 8, 09

I’m not one for Disney movies, but I love Anika Noni Rose, so I kind of want to go see “The Princess and the Frog”, which hits theatres finally on this Friday, December 11th. Rose stars as Disney’s first black princess, Princess Tiana. Though I hear she is a frog for the majority of the movie, wamp.

There’s also a soundtrack (which is out now) full of original music by Randy Newman (who also scored and composed for the film), and stars such as Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lewis and Rose herself. You can watch a live clip of her singing “Almost There” on “Good Morning America” a couple of weeks ago — she sounds great!

I’d take my little cousins to see this movie, as it is a pretty historic event for Disney. I’m not a real animated movie fan though, and haven’t seen a lot of “classic” Disney joints — don’t judge me. But I’m all for diversifying, and though there has been some backlash about this movie…when isn’t there backlash about anything as sensitive as race and how we handle it in America?

Are you going to check this out?

Magazine Covers: Michelle Obama Covers O Magazine

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 6, 09

      Michelle Obama on O Magazine

First Lady Michelle Obama covers O magazine with Oprah in its April issue.

If your child’s role model is Beyonce’, Rihanna, or anyone else mildly inappropriate, you should really buy them some books and inform them about what is going on in the world.

I can only hope the future daughter I have one day is as strong, educated, talented and stunning as either of these two women.

Phew, still thinking about black folks running stuff in the White House gives me shivers!

Trailer: Black Dynamite (Not Safe For Work)

Written by The IPS in Movies on Dec 1, 08

      YOOOOOOOOO YOOOOOOOOOOOO

ROFL OMG…omg. Blaxploitation is back. I just watched “Undercover Brother” last night (DON’T JUDGE ME!).

I spotted Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Arsenio Hall, Kym Whitley…I’m sure there were more in there but I am SO there to see this. It’s premiering at Sundance, which is a good look. I’m sure black folks will actually care about this one when they rubbing elbows with the Mormons in Salt Lake City.

Michael Jai White was BORN for this role, seriously. Ya’ll can’t tell me he don’t look like the 2nd cousin of Jim Kelly w/ them porkchop sideburns. Or as Dave Chappelle said in “Undercover Brother”, “Macy Gray with porkchop sideburns!”

Not really Macy though, I just wanted to use that quote.

This trailer is a mess though, but in a good way. Entertaining, to say the least. There is cussing and tittays though, so be careful “The Man” ain’t looking over your shoulder!

This is the story of 1970’s action legend Black Dynamite. When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House. Lindsey Lohan Must Still Use Crayons…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 12, 08

Because she called Barack Obama “colored”. Lawd, Lindsey, really!? Colored?! What is this, 1960?! Who says colored?!

Barack Obama’s historic win proves most people in this country are moving on from a terrible past of racism.

Looks like Lindsay Lohan didn’t get the memo.

In an interview with “Access Hollywood” on Monday, Lohan had the ultimate cringe moment when she called President-elect Obama “colored.”

When asked how she felt when Obama won, she answered: “It’s an amazing feeling, you know. It’s our first colored president.”

Lohan supported the Chicago senator during his campaign, but the Obama camp – who were seemingly wary of any celebrity support – did little to use the singer’s endorsement. (Source)

And you don’t even have to watch the whole thing to hear the off the cuff comment.

It’s not the fact that probably slip, but hey, FREUDIAN SLIP. Or as the church mother’s say, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Let her call me colored and I will knock the freckles off her face.

      The Obama’s Cover US Weekly

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 18, 08

      Obamas Cover US Weekly

Michelle Obama looks like she does NOT play. I am so serious. I think she will be the first First Lady who hands out whoopings with the Liberty Bell Rod or something else historic laying around the White House. “Go outside and get me a switch frrom that Presidential Bush in the backyard! I told you to stay out the cookie jar!”

Anyway, how/why are they covering US Weekly though!? No Essence, JET, nothing? Vibe? Bueller? Anyone? She has on a lot of makeup, but I think they look great! *don’t snipe me Secret Service*

Who’s on the cover of Essence this month, Mary J. Blige? LOL I swear it feels like she is on that joint at least 4 times a year. Our people….
