    • Bilal Gets “Back To Love” With His New Jazz Influenced Soul Single

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 8, 13

I LITERALLY was JUST listening to Bilal’s first album again last night, and I’m greeted with a new Bilal single this morning. “Back To Love” is his latest musical outing, taken from his upcoming album Surreal.

Bilal’s voice takes it typical timbre with the jazzed out kick heavy track also sharing prominence with his subdued vocal this time around. He finds a nice pocket and rides it out on this cut, and I like it. It fits Bilal’s musical pedigree in that it’s definitely not anything “straight ahead” — I almost felt like he was going to start scatting halfway through. I like it. He’s released a mixtape in the past few months that had some interesting covers and whatnot, but I’m glad Bilal is courting a jazzier sound on this record.

Not sure how indicative of Surreal this single is, but Bilal has a penchant for pushing his artistry past the mainstream, so I’m hoping for a bit more of that while still retaining his classic voice.

I hear Maxwell is closer to putting out new music — that’d be quite a great combo for my music library this year. I’m just saying!

Coverage: Bilal Does Stevie, Jade Novah Does Ke$ha & Daniel de Bourg Does Miguel

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 2, 12

Bilal is putting out new music! He’s released a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” as the first taste of his The Retrospection mixtape. I’ve always been a fan of Bilal — his quirky ear for music and singularly original talent is always welcome in such a crowded field of homogenous music stars. The mixtape drops on December 5th on his Facebook page apparently. In typical Bilal fashion, he makes this song his own — jazzes it up and smooths it out, with plenty of falsetto ad-libs to satiate your palette for good singing. Let me know what you think!

Jade Novah (@JadeNovah)is quickly making a mark, thanks to her cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. The well produced cover & video have over 9 MILLION VIEWS. Jade, no stranger to covers, has kept the momentum going. Her and her producer Mr. Devinaire have done it again with a pretty imaginative, original and yet true to the source cover of Ke$ha’s “Die Young”. Jade always manages to turn the songs I don’t like into songs I DO like — I love her version of “Call Me Maybe”! The quality and sheer music perfection that is her covers is pretty awesome though, and she doesn’t disappoint this go round either.

Related: Jade Novah’s cover of “Die In Your Arms” by Justin Bieber was also dope!

This is one sanging yt man. Seriously. I’ve been a fan of his covers ever since he did this bomb version of Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend”, and from time to time, I check in on Mr. Daniel de Bourg to see what he’s cooked up. Last week, he put out a cover of Miguel’s “Do You…”, which is one of the songs I really liked on his last album. Daniel doesn’t really do too much in the way of altering it, but he still sounds pretty dope singing it (which has never been a problem). It always trips me out to hear that voice come from that man, you know? Do you think he should have left this one alone?

Bilal’s “Little One” Shows That The American Dream Isn’t Always What It Seems

Written by The IPS in Videos on Apr 22, 11

We all want a house, family, kids, etc. In Bilal’s “Little One”, director Matthew A. Cherry shows that sometimes, life can throw you a curveball and you can do nothing but deal with it, make the best of it, and give your love. The video for “Little One” is dedicated to Bilal’s son who is autistic, and this video shows the discovery of that by a pair of parents and how they cope with the hard reality that life isn’t going to be as easy as it possibly can be when raising a child.

Bilal’s “Little One” is a song I listen to often, but I have to admit, I never fully digested the lyrics until just now. What a deep song. Bilal’s lyrics tend to send me into a deep place anyway sometimes while I am trying to decipher what he is talking about, but I still love his recent album Airtight’s Revenge. Shouts to the cast and crew for a job well done.

Classic Flashback: Bilal – “Soul Sista”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Jan 13, 11

I wear Bilal’s first First Born Second album out. It was such a complete body of work through and through. Bilal’s voice isn’t for everyone I am finding out, but I loved his 1st record, the “unreleased” record Love for Sale, and the new one Airtight’s Revenge has grown on me tremendously. But it all started with “Soul Sista”. The slinky bass of pace of this song matched with Bilal’s falsetto was a pairing made in Heaven, and his vocals are so amazing to me.

I always felt he was the anti-D’Angelo. He didn’t have to take off his shirt and evoke any sexual imagery for you — his music and voice did that in and of itself. Amazing the power of music.

New Music: Bilal’s “Think It Over” Gets The Remix Treatment By Exile

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Nov 17, 10

The Sounds of VTech / Think It Over (Exile Remix)

Bilal’s latest album Airtight’s Revenge REALLY had to grow on me. Like, for real. But when I saw him live a couple of weeks ago, my passion for his music was reignited and the album became that much more alive to me. My favorite songs are “Cake And Eat It Too”, “Levels”, and “Restart”, but I haven honestly listened to the whole album over and over again.

Well another producer that I check for on occasion named Exile has remixed Bilal’s “Think It Over”, which is a bluesy soul doo-wop joint that concludes Airtight’s Revenge, and added some more instrumentation and changed up the sound a bit. I like it. Check it above, and you can hear the original below. If you haven’t already copped Bilal’s latest album, do. It’s a slow burner but once you get it you will love it, I promise!

Bilal Questions The System & Gets Caught In A S**t Storm In “Robots” Clip

Written by The IPS in Videos on Nov 2, 10

OK, honestly, I was all set to analyze this video for Bilal’s latest single “Robots”, but honestly…

It started raining doo-doo logs and he was under an umbrella, and I kind of just logged off. I will see that I really hadn’t digested (no pun intended) the lyrics of this song until I saw them flashing across the screen in this clip, but, again, I was just thrown off by the boo-boo monsoon.

Bilal seems…an eclectic mind in the first place, and I am sure the music video director just brought his vision to life. Robots, living under the system and not bucking it…and the video drops just in time for Election Day. You get the picture. I have to say though, after seeing him live a couple of times and observing his “mental” well-being as either being altered temporarily or permanently, this video does NOT surprise me at all.

I’ll admit however that Airtight’s Revenge has grown on me with repeated plays, and while it is not as straight-ahead soulful as his previous works, there are moments that shine throughout the whole record. Old fans will probably grow to love it — new fans will probably just be scratching their heads, just like they will be after they watch this video. It’s in stores now!

Coverage: Bilal Does “Tainted Love” As Only He Can

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Oct 29, 10

Bilal does a cover of the Gloria James/Soft Cell hit “Tainted Love” as only he can. Slightly discordant, meandering yet focused, on point yet weird. Dude is a beast!

I just saw him a couple of weeks ago here in Portland, OR, and besides making us wait until 12:30 AM to get up on the stage, once he got on stage, HE WRECKED IT. He did all his hits, some of his new joints, and more. We were trying to figure out if he was high or drunk or both, but….it didn’t matter. He still delivered. Until I gave out out of sheer weariness and had to jet.

If you have the chance to see him live, DO IT. It was my 2nd time seeing him live and I wasn’t disappointed. His band was killer as well, and filled in the gaps where Bilal may have made a few missteps, if any.

Bilal Hits “Restart” On Our Imaginations With His Latest Clip

Written by The IPS in Videos on Oct 8, 10

I was wondering what was going on here in this new Bilal video for his single “Restart”, taken from his latest album Airtight’s Revenge, but Bilal has always struck me as one to do things slightly off-kilter. In the video, he’s being chased by masked marauders…who are dressed like animal crackers (in my opinion). They chase him, they grope him, and then…he wakes up.

The video I don’t think I can process with one watch, but I know that I do like the song, though it’s not my favorite from his album. That’d probably be “All Matter”. Oh and I love “Cake And Eat It Too”. But be forewarned, this definitely is no “Soul Sista” video, but we welcome Bilal’s return with open (animal) arms! LOL.

And Now For A Random Live Performance Goodie — Bilal’s “Something To Hold On To” + Pre-Order Link

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 24, 10

Bilal performed at the UCLA Jazz Fest over the summer and performed one of my favorites, his song “Something To Hold On To”, from his unreleased Love for Sale album. It was a gem that went hard on wax, and I have to enjoy I kind of enjoyed this performance live. I somewhat his frantic style of performing live, full of wails, improvisation, and emotion (and/or drugs some say LOL!).

You can pre-order his new album Airtight’s Revenge here if you are interested — and it drops September 14th. Are you ready for new Bilal Oliver music!? Oh and if you haven’t seen him performing his new song “Think It Over”, you can catch that here!

New Music: Bilal Gets “Free” And Looses New Music Upon Us

      Bilal – “Free” [Download]

Bilal is BACK! His new record Airtight’s Revenge will be dropped on September 14th, but until then, we have “Free”, a free-flowing yet soulful boom-bap produced by Nottz. This joint makes me excited about what is to come from Bilal, even though it won’t be on the album apparently.

Not a fan or never heard of him? His 1st Born Second album is a classic in my books and featured such joints as “Soul Sista” and “When Will You Call”. I’ve seen him live a couple of times and he’s dope in that setting too. Check out a video from a show I took after the jump a couple of years back, if you’re interested…
