    • Paula Abdul May Be Bringing Back Star Search?!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 16, 10

Paula Abdul may be getting off of unemployment soon!

Paula Abdul is reportedly in talks to be be the host of a Star Search revival, according to People. I remember when Arsenio Hall did that reboot a couple of years ago — I had a friend who tried out on there LOL.

Of course the original with Ed McMahon was the launching pad of many of today’s stars, like a young Beyonce’ as a part of Gyrls Tyme. Oh, memories.

Abdul, 47, is finalizing a deal to help ABC launch a new version of Star Search, the classic TV talent contest from the ’80s, according to Entertainment Weekly. The network isn’t commenting, but Abdul would reportedly juggle a combination of hosting and judging duties for the show, which could debut this summer.

The original Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon, ran in syndication from 1983 until 1995 and featured comedy, modeling and dancing as well as singing. It featured performances by many future stars, including Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in the early ’90s. A revival on CBS in 2003, hosted by Arsenio Hall, fizzled after just two seasons, though a young David Archuleta was the junior vocal champion in 2003.

I think this might be interesting, mostly because it’ll be competition to American Idol. However, what about Simon Cowell’s leaving AI for his Americanized import of his hit UK show The X-Factor next season?

And do we REALLY need all these talent shows in the first place? Between these shows and reality shows, I’m burnt out on regla nikkas trying to be famous, or famous people trying to STAY famous. Give me a good sitcom anyday.

Adam Lambert Takes Us On With “Whataya Want From Me”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 25, 10

Adam Lambert, the winner-but-non-winner of last seasons’ American Idol has been stirring up the controversy and whatnot, but at the end of the day, dude has a crazy range. Seriously. Say what you want, but the vocals on this song are crazy.

This song was originally recorded for Pink’s last album Funhouse but didn’t make the final cut. It was co-written by her and one of my favorite producers, Max Martin, among others. You can definitely hear the Pink influence and if you close your eyes, you can almost imagine her voice as well.

The song/video deals with the pressures of being in a role in a relationship or in life in which someone/something is always pulling on you or requesting from you, etc. That’s how I interpret it. If you don’t like Adam Lambert for whatever reason, that’s fine. But this song right here immediately registered with me due to the song itself and Adam’s soaring vocals and ad-libs. Is it perfect? No. But it’s as close as Adam got on his debut album For Your Entertainment. Also check out his song “Sleepwalker”. Another favorite from his album!

Mary J. Blige to Guest Judge “American Idol”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 14, 09

MJB the Queen is taking a turn in Paula Abdul’s now-vacant chair as they continue to tape the shows around the country. She’ll be sitting in during the Atlanta run, after Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, leaves.

Again I say — how they have all these non-singers judging this show? Mary is a step up though, because she’s MARY, but still LOL. You know Mary has good days and bad days. J/K!! I love Mary!

Blige will meet up with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi in Atlanta for auditions. On Friday, the show is wrapping up auditions in Boston, where Victoria Beckham has been filling Paula Abdul’s spot. “The judges and production team have been having a lot of fun with Victoria,” a show source says. “She’s had a great response so far, and has been really warm with the contestants.” (Source)

I hope Mary straight up goes church and gives out that “Church Mother Front Row Missionary” side-eye! OMG, I would seriously tune in just for that. I hate that I still love American Idol after ALL these years…save me.

Queen Latifah to “Rule” on Idol?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 10, 09

      Queen Latifah on SNL

Queen Latifah may be going to Idol — or apparently she’s on a wishlist, along with people like Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez.

I don’t know about ya’ll, but I WOULD LOVE another black person on Idol. I could see her and Randy making fake” sexual overtones at each other now like Paula and Simon did. Cleo FTW!

Queen Latifah’s name has been thrown in the mix as a possible guest judge for “American Idol” following the departure of Paula Abdul, reports Radar Online.

A source close to the show said the Oscar-nominated actress is definitely on the wish list, while Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and Katy “I Kissed A Girl”

Perry have already been confirmed. There are also rumors that Jennifer Lopez is being courted as a permanent replacement for Abdul. (Source)

That would be perfect promo for her new album, whenever it finally drops. Lord knows that “Cue the Rain” single hasn’t really gained any traction…

What’s with all the non-singers (kind of) being judges in a singing competition? If Posh Spice told me I couldn’t sing, I’d go to commercial break and woop that tail! For real? LOL!

What Do We Think About: Brandon Rogers’ “Joy”

Written by The IPS in Blogs, New Music & Reviews, Videos on Jul 29, 09

You may not remember Brandon Rogers, but I do since I watched Idol avidly back then. He was on American Idol, season 6 with Jordin Sparks. He had that big curly hair fro thing but I do remember him being a pretty decent singer.

Since then, he’s gone on to host Idol Tonight on the TV Guide Network and has released a debut album as well. This song comes from that album, called Automatic, which is available now.

Having shaved his curly locks, he still looks good LOL. Not everyone can rock the baldy. This song, while a bit downtempo, has a nice pocket to it, and the video is a pretty classy straightforward affair. He gets his two-step on, and I almost feel like this video could be a commercial for something.

The song itself, while wordy at times, is an overall quality affair. Enough to make me want to check out his album.

What do you all think? Feedback!

      Covers: Jordin Sparks’ “Battlefield”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 11, 09

      Jordin Spark Album Cover

      Spotted at Neon Limelight

Well, if this isn’t a mess I’ll pay you a quarter.

This looks like a American Apparel haircare ad or something. LOL it’s a little overtly sexy for Jordin, but I am sure she is aching to prove her growth between this album and the last.

Don’t expect any duets w/ Chris Brown though I am sure ROFL.

Battlefield hits stores July 21st, and I’ve already expressed my love for the single so yeah. But let’s hope the lackluster video and Photoshop 101 cover don’t indicate what the underlying contained record will sound like…

Jordin has pipes…that’s for sure. But w/ her and other great singers, it’s all about the SONG CHOICE. Hopefully her A&R did their job!

      Video: Jordin Sparks – “Battlefield”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 8, 09

WOW, and I love this song so much…I’m majorly let down by this video.

Jordin and/or her team went for a more open concept. I think it’s kinda lame to have her walking through a field…”performing” in a field…in a video for a song about “Battlefield”. So obvious though…

I think the smoke and pyrotechnics were to lead us to believe that part about a “battle”, but overall this video was super lackluster for such a big song. Jordin looks GREAT, I mean, great…but let me quit before S. Jones gets me…*no shots*

Overall, I love this song though still and it has grown even more since I last talked about it LOL. I can’t wait to hear what she brings on her new album, I am hoping big, Kelly Clarkson-esque success for her! Girl got chops and pipes.

Live Performances: Jordin Sparks – “Battlefield”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 14, 09

Man, Jordin Sparks returned to the American Idol stage with a vengeance last night! She came out all fierce, flying hair and flailing limbs LOL. Power notes and belting, Jordin wasn’t taking no prisoners.

I liked this song though, and her performance, while a little over the top was great. There were a few bum notes here and there, and my roommate had me dying. She said “Jordin needs to learn how to walk in heels”. Alrighty then!

I will say this — she looked great. The dress, THEM LEGS, is Jordin legal yet? No R. Kelly here, but ole girl looked fine. Yes indeed, no battling here LOL. Why fight when you that fine? Hmph.

The Ryan Tedder produced record is her first single and expect the video to be posted here!

Oh and sorry, Danny Gokey should have been in the finale. Kris? Really? His surfer rendition of “Heartless” last night did nothing for me…wamp to tha wamp.

Paula Abdul Returns To The Stage…Why?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on May 7, 09

Paula Abdul performed her new song “I’m Just Here For The Music” last night on American Idol, her first time hitting the stage in all the years she’d been there. “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow” wasn’t performed on the show!? I thought it was but maybe not.

Well, umm, some of the dancing was decent, but there was nothing that made me be like “SNAP!! PAULA ABDUL IS BACK!”

For real, I wanted Simon to be like “that was simply dreadful!” but noooo, they faded to black. I wanted to see everyone’s faces!

What ya’ll think of Paula’s return to music? Should she go back to hawking jewelry on QVC?

Danny Gokey WENT HARD TONIGHT ON IDOL!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 28, 09

      OK, no, for real…

Danny Gokey had his Fantasia “Summertime” moment tonight on Idol. It reminded me of that moment that Fantasia performed “Summertime” sitting on the stage and totally wrecked it and just cemented her place in the competition and in the minds of America.

Danny’s performance of “Come Rain or Come Shine” did that same thing for him tonight. He riffed, smoldered, exciting, built and just outperformed EVERYONE tonight. He sounded like Elliott Yamin but better. He thoroughly channeled ever black, soulful blues singer he had ever heard and just invoked their spirits to MURDER that song.

I actually bothered to vote tonight. True story, I was dozing off watching Idol but he blew up the spot!

      Adam Lambert
was the favorite to win, still might, but dang if Danny didn’t give him a run for his money. Adam is still good…but Danny definitely became the competition. I predict they are the last two! If not, America is messed up!

      Fantasia’s video after the jump:
