    • “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” Is Not Bad Per Se…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 8, 10

It’s just that Alicia makes it dreadful! And, to make it even more excruciating, she slows the tempo DOWN. We are only saved by the respite we find in the voices of the background singers. YA’LL BETTA SING.

Oprah featured Alicia in a recent episode and there was also chatter and a preview of the video for “Put It In A Love Song”. I got to say, I’m looking forward to the VISUALS of that video, not so much the audio. LOL.

I wanted to post this for that SLOW tempo though, what made her decide that was a good idea?!

The All-Star Performances Were Less Than Stellar Sadly…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 15, 10

Alicia Keys sings CONSISTENTLY under the note. Like, this woman is always slightly flat and it just MURDERS my eardrums. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she came out with that Just For Me brown hair color and I just automatically gave her the side-eye. Then she started singing and I just had kick her while she was down(pitch). Please pass her a Guide to Lip-Syncing because I’d rather see her dance and look thick and good then ruin my visual daydreams with that voice. I just can’t.

“Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” was pretty bad, then “Empire State of Mind Part II” was slightly better, but then she cracked at the beginning of “No One” and OMG, she just…I can’t!!!!

As far as Shakira goes, just do what I do — mute it! ROFL, however, Shakira is FINE. Even though I always crack up at her busting out with the Step/Drill Team routine, “Give It Up To Me” actually has a nice beat. Instrumental please! Shakira is so fine though, I’d watch her peel and cut potatoes. NO lie. “She Wolf” scares me slightly LOL.

Usher has officially lost his crown, because this mess? That Breastplate of Foolishness that he has on?! I cannot! The notes were everywhere, and the dance moves just seemed a little strained and forced. I think Usher has just checked out and is doing music for the check now. The only thing I liked was the track to that 2nd track he danced to. But overall, his music is crap now, and even “Yeah” sounds SUPER dated.

If Alicia Keys and Usher are our representatives for this generation’s legends…ohhhhh buddy. We in trouble.

Alicia Keys In The UK, Vocally, Is A Fail. Fashionably As Well? You Decide!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 24, 10

Alicia Keys is flatter than a London apartment (think about it!) during this performance on numerous occasions. Prime violation #1 is at the 1:36 point mark. Please get into that opened bottle of Shasta 3 liter Grape soda 2 days later — FLAT FLAT FLAT.

LOL, someone asked me on Twitter what did I expect!

“She needs to change her last name from Keys since she can’t seem to find them” — @mrpolished on Twitter

I had just said a joke about not posting any more Alicia Keys performances because she can’t seem to get solid vocally at all this album cycle. Her performance for the telethon was pretty bad, but God bless her ministry for trying to be a help to the people of Haiti. Still, a bad performance is a bad performance.

Alicia Keys needs to really rest that voice because she’s flatter than ruined souffle. Flatter than a 25/20’s booty in Mom jeans. Flatter than that tuu-tuu ensemble she has on. Flatter than a factory floor. I could go on and on, but I won’t LOL!

Alicia Keys Does AOL Sessions Live And In Lace

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 15, 10

Alicia Keys did the “Unthinkable” joint from her latest album at AOL Sessions live. She doesn’t sound too terrible during this performance at all actually. It’s a much easier song to sing however. She was a little iffy in the beginning and at the beginning of those verses because it’s so low in her range.

She really gets into it when she gets to the loud parts toward the song LOL, as would be expected. She was killing me with those lace gloves — all I could think was OJ Simpson and his leather gloves. It just kept popping into my head.

She also does “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”, which also starts off a tad bit pitchy…and it kinda gets worse the further along she gets through the song. She has got to be hoarse or something though. Hopefully.

Have You Ever Tried Sleeping With A Broken Ear Drum? Alicia Keys Hosts “SNL” Tonight

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 9, 10

OK I just had to post this promo up for tonight’s “Saturday Night Live” episode with musical guest Alicia Keys and host Charles Barkley for two reasons:

      1. I’m not looking forward to Alicia’s performances. Why you ask? Well as I’ve just been watching and paying attention, they have been declining it quality very quickly as this album cycle has progressed. I think usually her songs have saved my attention span despite her knack for being pitchy and oversinging and lack of dynamics. But man, she’s showing a lot of suck lately. Did you watch her Billboard.com live performance stream the other night? It was kind of all over the place.

Elle Varner and Raheem DeVaughn were pretty much the highlights of that “Alicia Keys & Friends” concert. You can watch that concert here if you missed it live.

      2. Umm, Charles Barkley is the host?! ROFL. Please catch his pronouncing of “Saturday Night Live”. It sounds like “Saturlay Night Lie”. Oooooooh doggie. He’s hosting? HAHAHA. I CANNOT.

So, how will you spend your Saturday night? LOL.

J*DaVeY – “Crawl All Over” [Listen + Download]

Another hot hot hot new joint from J*DaVeY. Their new mixtape, Boudoir Synema: the great mistape, drops on Christmas Day and I am excited to hear what they are coming with. All of the leaked songs have been excellent and this one doesn’t change that trend. The music is cinematic in a funky and down-tempo way. Let me know what you think.

Alicia Keys – “Empire State of Mind Pt. 2 (Remix)” Feat. Raekwon, CNN & Styles P [Listen + Download]

Do you remember when remixes were actual new music tracks instead of taking on rappers phoned in verses? Well, this goes back to what a remix is. DJ Green Latern hits the boards and remixes Alicia Keys’ joint with a nice hip-hop swagger. I think I like this better than the original beat-wise. The music under Rae’s verse has a nice swagger and swing to it — and Green Lantern changes up the beds under each verse. Nice. Capone’s voice however…HILARIOUS. What ya’ll think of this remix?

Alicia Keys Gives Us A (Free) Mini-Concert on 106 & Park

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 17, 09

First, I’m gonna say that I was just thinking about not posting anymore Alicia Keys live performances, because they are all starting to run together and I’m getting slightly tired of watching/listening to them LOL.

However, she did a 4 song medley on BET’s 106 & Park yesterday (about 18 minutes), and someone took the time to put them all together for us, and it’s post worthy because there is a new song (“Un-thinkable”) sprinkled in amongst some other opportunities to point out some things…after the jump.

Behind Alicia Keys’ “The Element of Freedom”, Track By Track

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 15, 09

Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom
      3 stars out of 5

Is it possible to give 2.75 stars? Cause that’s what I would give this album. LOL, not quite 3 stars but not quite THAT bad either.

Overall, Alicia Keys delivers a suprisingly largely tepid album, chock full of rehashes of her old self, or others, or of preceding songs on the same record. The songs themselves are nothing to be a-twitter about, as she really doesn’t break any new ground with her writing. She takes on and adapts a largely 80’s sound on this album, and is considering that “growth”, since her last album was largely 70’s in its musical influences, particularly 70’s soul.

Her attempts at mixing 80’s pop and rock come off as overly pop and her soulfulness is lost admist a drege of attempts at power ballads and uninspired love-song lyrics. On top of that, her largely unimpressive vocal performances at time seem to be a bit much, as she vocally careens and barrels her way through a lot of these songs, leaving dynamics and tue passion on the cutting room floor. She teeters on the edge vocally between oversinging and screaming, leaving you hoping she isn’t flat from trying to hoard, deaf from listening, and hoarse from the attempt in the first place.

This album comes off as a calculated attempt at pop/crossover, but really, she’s already achieved that. As a 12 time Grammy award winner, there’s not many souls who don’t know who Alicia Keys is. So the album is a bit confusing and off-putting to long time fans. While there are some salvagable performances and songs, the album largely runs together into an never-ending cascade of piano, loud vocals and feelings of deja-vu. The singles were precisely right on in the impression that they gave about this album — you either love it or hate it, but hopefully you love it, because it’s 13-14 songs of sameness.

      Track-by-track review after the jump.

Alicia Is Still “Sleeping With A Broken Heart” On Letterman

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 15, 09

Alright Ms. Alicia Keys. I’m gonna say her performances are on the upswing so far. Towards the end before they remixed it for live performance though, she did start to get a little flat.

But Alicia is looking GREAT these days and I don’t mind watching her be flat or oversing at all. That is what the mute button is for, right? LOL. But her backup singers give me so much LIFE, goodness, they hold it down!

Alicia’s album is out OFFICIALLY today. Are you copping it? Based on the singles alone, I’d say no, but I’m gonna squeak out a review here in 5, 4, 3, 2…

Alicia Keys Relatively Nails It This Time With “Doesn’t Mean Anything”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 09

I know we’ve all been hard on Alicia Keys this album cycle, but I got to give it up to her for this performance. Relative to the performances she’s been handing in, this one is pretty good! Vocals are strong (though she still insists on showing us every vein in her neck with all the hollering), the arrangement by the band is nice, the background singers are on point…what more could we ask for?

Sure, the song itself can be a bit of a snooze, but live, it’s all about how the interprets it and makes it interesting, and in this particular performance, she kind of won me over. Ever her sashaying in front of the piano was forgotten because I was actually engaged by the song a bit.

It’s live, it’s on key — isn’t this what we look for? She rocked the “Paul O’Grady Show” in the UK this past week.

Still can’t rock with that album though, that review will be up next week. “Hey B!” “Wassup, A!?” OH NO I CANNOT! Hot mess!
