    • Fantasia Turns Her Tabloid Troubles Into Tremendous Melodies On ‘Side Effects Of You’

Fantasia Side Effects Of You Artwork

Fantasia – Side Effects Of You
      4 stars out of 5

I’ve been Team Fantasia since she sung “I Believe” on American Idol many, many moons ago. And yes, she’s been through some very hard (and extremely public) times, from a relationship with a married man, another child, reading struggles, a Lifetime movie and more. All the while, Fantasia managed to keep the music coming, as pastiche and fragmented as it was. What always outshone even the most mediocre or tepid song however was her amazingly powerful and soulful voice. On Side Effects Of You, Fantasia has finally managed to meld the voice with song choice and has released her most cohesive, comprehensive, authentic and poignant album to date.

Album Review: Brandy’s “Two Eleven” Is A Work Fitting For An R&B Veteran And Diva

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Oct 16, 12

Brandy’s rabid legion of fans have been anticipating this day more than the Mayans had been anticipating the end of the world — the release of her new album Two Eleven. After many years, trials, tribulations, hiatuses, and more, everyone’s favorite singer has returned triumphantly.

Two Eleven is no Full Moon, so let’s just put that aside right now. People want it to be, but it’s not. However, it IS its own well rounded body of work that I’m sure Brandy is proud of. One thing that has never faltered is Ms. Norwood’s vocal skill. Still a fine tuned instrument, it’s on front street once again on her latest solo debut, and fans of that aspect of her as an artist definitely won’t be disappointed.

Album Reviews: Monica’s “New Life” Isn’t Anything We Haven’t Musically Experienced Before

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 10, 12

      Monica – New Life
      2.75 stars out of 5

In the classic plotting of an average pop star’s trajectory, Monica is on a “good” upswing. She’s married, she’s happy, she’s mending relationships (see: duet with Brandy on “It All Belongs To Me”), she’s maturing and she’s finally becoming a woman. The styling, the songs, the placement in the media, EVERYTHING is being positioned to mirror this fact. With her latest album New Life, Monica is embracing these things vocally and lyrically, for the most part. There are some fumbles and forays into all too familiar territory, but for the most part, she’s aging gracefully as illustrated on this disc.

Things You Should Ch-Ch-Check Out: Waajeed x DJ Topspin, Nancy Wilson & Robert Glasper

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 9, 12

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I just discovered via the Twitters this blendtape put out by acclaimed blender DJ Topspin. Peep it. It takes some exclusive beats from Waajeed of PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) and vocals from their last album and remixes them. It’s pretty soulful and original, and Topspin’s ear is pretty on. The latter half is a bunch of Dilla remixes. RIP Dilla. Also, today is the anniversary of Biggie’s death as well.

More celebratory sounds for the month of February, the month of J Dilla’s birth [2/07/74] & his death [2/10/06]…

For this one, I paired new & exclusive beats from WAAJEED to remix his PPP debut album ‘Triple P’. For the 2nd half, I put the many Jay Dee / Dilla flips & remixes I’ve constructed over the years on display. #TURNITUP!

Cop the tape on DJ Topspin’s website here, and peep the remix of Faith Evans’ “U Gets No Love” above, which I particularly enjoyed.

Today’s Classic Flashback is none of other than Nancy Wilson! I love Nancy Wilson’s voice. She’s an impeccable song stylist, and why I have fallen in love with her over the past year or so randomly baffles me. However, I cannot get enough of the way she styles a song. One of my favorite joints by her is “Where Does That Leave Me”. Please get into that song and this voice. Go download some Nancy Wilson material today if you feeling taking a stroll down Good Music Lane and Great Voice Way. You won’t be disappointed.

Robert Glasper Experiment – Black Radio
4.5 starts out of 5 stars

The Robert Glasper Experiment has put out their latest opus,Black Radio. If you don’t purchase anything else this month, you need to get this.

This is Robert Glasper’s most accessible record, and wow, is it fantastic. It features the likes of Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, the list goes ON. It’s sad, ironic, and really a shame that despite the title of the radio, you’ll most likely never hear any of these songs on any mainstream radio. And the fact that there is still a demarcation between “black” radio or otherwise is backwards STILL.

That being said, this album, despite the complex musicalities of it, is a great balance between Glasper’s (and his cohorts) musical genius and his need to garner mainstream attention. He does it. It’s a musically dense yet well-played and orchestrated record. Erykah Badu does her thing on her cover of “Afro Blue”, Ledisi ministers on her cut “Gonna Be Alright”, Stokley of Mint Condition channels Stevie Wonder on “Why Do We Try”, and Glasper’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the stuff that legendary live shows will be made of. Too many highlights. Get this. You’ll have to listen to it at least 3x to digest fully, I bet.

Betty Wright Schools You On “The Game” & Proves Why She’s Still Valid With Latest Release

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 10, 12

Please get into Betty Wright turning out this performance of “In The Middle Of The Game (Don’t Change The Play)” on Jools Holland with his orchestra across the pond. Voice in full effect, working the stage, the guests, the audience, the maestro, and all the while knowing that a) she wrote the song and b) that that is how it should really be done.

If you haven’t picked up Betty Wright’s newest album Betty Wright: The Movie, which features her alongside the crackpot team of The Roots, Betty Wright spins a soulful, cautionary, and motherly role as a Soul Advisor and Musical Ingenue reborn. Her songs are poignant yet matronly; soulful yet painful at times; and even funky and current with guests sprinkled in like Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Wayne.

Album Review: Kelly Rowland’s “Here I Am” Is A Musical Misnomer If There Ever Was One

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Aug 1, 11

Kelly Rowland – Here I Am
      2 stars out of 5

In the grand scheme of things, Kelly Rowland’s latest Here I Am is a better body of work than her other previous outings, by way of a hit single and some international exposure to actually give her a chance on the charts competing in a world full of singles-driven pop artists and R&B that has been decimated by the addition of the 4-on-the-floor Euro sound. That being said, if you zoom out and look at the big picture of Kelly’s musical output and her musical persona, Here I Am is still a pastiche of misshapen attempts and falters of dance-pop mixed with a mélange of R&B sensibilities and her internationally influenced dance successes that have inextricably woven their way into her musical DNA. Here I Am is not terrible, but we still, as listeners, walk away with the feeling that we just digested the musical equivalent of cotton candy – after it melts away, we still feel empty with a weird yet not unpleasant aftertaste.

Album Review: Beyoncé Keeps It Surprisingly Simple On “4″

Written by Donovan in New Music & Reviews on Jun 29, 11

      Beyoncé – 4
      3.5 out of 5 stars

Beyoncé has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with. Combining her sheer vocal prowess with consistently improving performance ability and an unparalleled work ethic have put her in a class all of her own. However, one of the apparent problems that prevents her from joining some of the all time greats is the deliverance of a classic LP; one where no one can deny its pure artistic merits. 4 is a step closer to that goal, but still misses the mark.

Album Review: It’s A New Day And Jill Scott Is Letting “The Light Of The Sun” Shine Through

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jun 23, 11

Review for Tha Feedback by Londonis

After a public break from her record label, the untimely demise of a relationship, and a new baby, Jill Scott’s latest album, The Light of the Sun still comes shining through like only this soul sista can!

Honestly, when I heard the first official single released from the album, “Shame”, I was confused and fairly upset (naturally being an avid Jill fan). I thought to myself, “If this is Jill’s ‘new sound’, then I’m not looking forward to hearing the rest of it”. It seems when an artist feels musically stagnant and ventures in a new direction that it’s always a step away from what made you love them in the first place, and I was hoping this wouldn’t be the case with Jill. That being said, I crossed my fingers and kept the faith that the long awaited musical re-emergence of one of today’s most prolific talents would not be remodeled beyond recognition, tainted, or dulled down.

Explore Music: Támar Davis Has Arrived And The Sista Is Doing It For Herself

Written by The IPS in Blogs,New Music & Reviews on Mar 24, 11

If you’ve never seen a Tyler Perry play recently, then you may not have heard of my girl Támar. However, if you remember Prince’s “Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed” that was nominated for a Grammy from his 3121 album, then you may remember his female muse du jour of the then moment, Támar.

Támar is a Houston native and has spent her time in Los Angeles and beyond perfecting her gift, honing her craft, and working on life to put out the great music that she just released today on her new album, My Name Is Támar. A strong vocalist, actress (she starred in Tyler Perry’s “The Marriage Counselor” and was also in “Madea’s Big Happy Family”), songwriter, and all around amazing talent, Támar decided to do her album in her own way and on her own dime after leaving Prince and having her unreleased album Milk & Honey shelved. My Name Is Támar is the result of recording songs while on the road with Tyler’s plays, a testament to her hard work and perseverance.

The album is streaming above, so take a listen. The songs I suggest are “Love Speaks”, which the tempo on reminds you of a slow waltz, “Slow Down”, “You’ll Never Know”, which features American Idol and Sunday Best former contestant Jermaine Sellers, and “Heartbeat”.

If you want more info on Támar, hit her up on Twitter, or go to her official website at http://www.tamardavis.com. Tell her Tha Feedback sent ya!

Album Review: Jennifer Hudson’s “I Remember Me” Feels Like An Afterthought

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 23, 11

Jennifer Hudson – I Remember Me
2.5 stars out of 5 stars

Jennifer Hudson, with her voluptuous voice and indomitable vocal power, has fallen by the wayside. Call it distraction with a new baby and her current film projects, but this sophomore album was definitely an afterthought. It seems as if she’s hit the doldrums of creativity and relied on a bunch of “named” producers to let this album coast on through to stores without nary a bit of real soul. While her last album and movie were all about the awards and nominations that they garnered the then new artist, this second album won’t be as much of a feather in her cap from what I’m hearing. The creative output isn’t really there, and even her voice sounds as if it is on auto-pilot from front to back. As much as we love J. Hud, I feel slightly cheated and a little left out in the cold from I Remember Me.
