    • Watch As James Blake’s “Retrograde” Is The Soundtrack To Earth’s Destruction

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 14, 13

I love James Blake, and man, this new record of his is KILLER aurally. I am THOROUGHLY enjoying it.

I won’t lie and act like I totally understand what is going on in this video — end of the world? Aliens? Biker aliens? — but the visual itself is dark and a bit haunting (and matches the song).

James Blake’s last album was a favorite. Sometimes you have to find the song that fits your mood and that clicks with you at that moment, but with “Retrograde”, I can listen to this anytime. It feels a bit more accessible than the tunes from his last eponymous album. His new body of work Overgrown drops in April, and I’m looking forward to it.

I honestly cannot stop listening to “Retrograde” and I think you won’t be able to either after this first spin. Let me know if I’m wrong.

These darn Brits are taking over!

Justin Timberlake Angles To Be A Purveyor Of Cool With “Suit & Tie” Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 14, 13

I’ve been here for Justin Timberlake as a solo artist from day one, let’s be clear. I’ve always been a fan (though I can’t help but wonder if JC Chasez was to have REALLY gotten a chance to be a solo artist, who’d be the better artist musically) and was excited just like everyone else when he announced that he’d be doing a new album.

With baited breath, we all watched the teaser video he did, and then once “Suit & Tie” dropped, we all exhaled.

For me, that exhale was more of a gasp because I don’t LOVE this record. It’s decent. It’s nice. In the context of the rest of the album, it will probably make a LOT more sense. But as a single, it has NOT wowed me at all. I remember when “Sexyback” or “Cry Me A River” dropped, I was instantly drawn in and invested in Justin’s latest pop opus that was sure to follow. “Suit & Tie” gives me chopped & screwed Justin (which leads me to think, the track preceeding it on the album is one of a similar tempo to the chopped & screwed beginning of “Suit & Tie), then transitions into a smooth, easy breezy track, with a mostly superfluos rap from Jay-Z.

It’s a nice sentiment and ultimately, it’s not a terrible song at all. I’ve yet to purposefully really spin this track, however.

The video continues along with the cool, grown man, Rat Pack-esque factor that Justin seems to be pushing with this track and even the Grammy performance. It’s a decent outing visually — a little dancing, smoky rooms, sipping the finest dark liquors — things “grown” men do. Justin’s married now. Jay-Z is the elder statesman of Hip-Hop. It makes sense. But why does it have to be SO boring?

That’s what I walk away from this song and now video wondering. I was hoping one would change the other, but I’m going to just go ahead and wait for the Gospelfied soul that is “Pusher Love Girl” and wait for the album to drop in March.

All Diddy Does Is “Scream & Shout” On The “Urban” Remix To Will.I.Am’s Latest Hit

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 14, 13

      I have a confession.

I got into a Twitter war over the original version of “Scream & Shout” with some of my followers about my general disdain for will.I.am and his songs. I thought “Scream & Shout” was phoned in, Britney really didn’t add anything, and blah, I thought the Black Eyed Peas went on hiatus and was hoping William did, too. But after a bunch more listens (partially to being deluged by it on the radio every 5 minutes), it grew on me. It became a guilty pleasure.

And then will.I.am made a a hood version and I got sucked in a little bit more.

Barring Diddy’s useless refrains and screams on this record, I do like this remix a bit. The video has a cool factor to it that I appreciate — even Britney doing her best “sista-girl” styled up robotic moves doesn’t make me hate the song any more. Her robotic voice, along with robotic presence, say a lot about her swag and stature. The sampling of her refrain of “Britney, bitch” really gives the song its life. will.i.am is not only trying to get that Z100 money, he’s also coming for that Hot 97 money, too. We see you, sir. We see you.

Out of all the newest guests added to the song, Lil’ Wayne kills it. Hit-Boy’s presence is more so for marketing of some sort I feel like, now that he’s trying to break into rapping fame. Waka is just purely there for energy level, obviously.

will.I.am is whatever to me, but dude makes catchy pop songs, and really, that’s what it’s all about in this day and age. Will this song age well? Naw. But for now, in the words of Diddy, “TURN UP BITCH!”

Did you like the original? Do you like this remix more?

Bilal Gets “Back To Love” With His New Jazz Influenced Soul Single

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 8, 13

I LITERALLY was JUST listening to Bilal’s first album again last night, and I’m greeted with a new Bilal single this morning. “Back To Love” is his latest musical outing, taken from his upcoming album Surreal.

Bilal’s voice takes it typical timbre with the jazzed out kick heavy track also sharing prominence with his subdued vocal this time around. He finds a nice pocket and rides it out on this cut, and I like it. It fits Bilal’s musical pedigree in that it’s definitely not anything “straight ahead” — I almost felt like he was going to start scatting halfway through. I like it. He’s released a mixtape in the past few months that had some interesting covers and whatnot, but I’m glad Bilal is courting a jazzier sound on this record.

Not sure how indicative of Surreal this single is, but Bilal has a penchant for pushing his artistry past the mainstream, so I’m hoping for a bit more of that while still retaining his classic voice.

I hear Maxwell is closer to putting out new music — that’d be quite a great combo for my music library this year. I’m just saying!

Kendrick Lamar Takes His Freestyle Out The Backseat And To Paris With New Visual

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 2, 13

One of my favorite rap albums in a while and of 2012 was Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. It has characters, a story, a thesis, a denouement, everything. A great album, with some great musical beds, rich dynamics and an all around solid debut album from an artist that transferred his internet buzz into a viable, critically acclaimed album.

One of my favorite tracks from the album is the Hit-Boy produced “Backseat Freestyle” track and it’s got a globe-trotting video, to boot. From the streets and his home in Compton (presumably), to the Eiffel Tower in Paris (in which he references during the course of the track numerous times), Kendrick Lamar’s visual works surprisingly well with this song. My initial thought was “How are they going to put a video to this freestyle track?”, but they pulled it off. Even threw in a little bit of classic hip-hop vixen ass shaking for about a good 30 seconds, LOL. Allegedly, the vixen has been labeled as Sherane — she who recurs numerous times throughout the CD as a type of love interest and foil for Kendrick as well.

Also, for a bit of comedic relief, if you’ve listened to the album, you’ve heard the skits with his parents. They also make an appearance in the video as well!

Still loving this CD, and this visual is ok with me.

Did you like the CD? This song? Chime in below!

Coverage: B. Slade Does A Vocally Titillating Cover Of Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 12

Innovative, outspoken and vibrant artist B. Slade has aimed his considerable vocal at covering a classic Prince song (and one of my favorite Prince songs ever), “If I Was Your Girlfriend”.

      B. Slade gives the treatment a more laid-back swing groove that highlights his jazzy yet solid vocal. It’s missing all of the deep, sexy, sultry and prominent bass licks of the original, but the focus should really be on B. Slade’s vocal. His range and layering alone are worth a couple of extra listens.

It’s a different approach that is wholly different from most other versions, but B. Slade’s light, airy, distinct and expansive range handle the vocal exceptionally well.

What do you think of this cover? One of my favorite covers of this song will always be Daniel de Bourg’s version, which I posted a while ago.

You Should Definitely “Make Love…” To Luke James’ Newest Single

Written by The IPS in Videos on Dec 11, 12

The world has been clamoring for new Luke James music ever since “I Want You” hit the scene with an emotional and vocal punch, and finally, we’re going to get more with the latest EP Whispers in the Dark which drops tomorrow.

The Ne-Yo penned and and Salaam Remi produced “Make Love To Me” sets the tone and frames Luke’s voice well. It’s hard to nail down singers like Luke James usually. Pop radio wants jams of the moment, but ballads tend to appeal to older folks. They’ve attempted to bridge the gap with the all snaps and synths “Make Love To Me”. There’s no 808, no bass drops, no EDM dance floor craziness to be found in this song. The highlight is on Luke’s more than capable and excellent voice, as it should be with a vocal talent like his.

The sexy vibe of the video features a bunch of familiar faces — Terry Ellis (En Vogue), Stacey Barthe, my wife Kelly Rowland and Omari Hardwick. The treatment of the video is also based on the famous Ernie Barnes painting “Sugar Shack” — which was used for a Marvin Gaye album cover (I Want You) and on the TV show “Good Times”. It all fits so well. Luke is playing up his handsome looks, mixing it with a sexy crowd full of beautiful people, and then singing his ass off. Who isn’t mad about that? The vibe is right, the music is tight, and I can’t wait to hear what Luke does next.

Sidenote: I love Luke James’ ugly stank sing face. Ole boy emotes and sings with his whole body — like a true singer does and should!

Live Performances: Is Solange “Losing You” With Her Latest EP? Check This Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 11, 12

If you haven’t had the chance to listen to Solange’s newest EP True, you should check it out. Solange has a penchant for tapping into a particular emotional vein and working it well, especially with the some of the material from True. I’ve honestly grown to love the whole project in its entirety.

Solange takes her writing to another level, exploring some honest and raw feelings and emotions about breakups, love, relationships and more. “Losing You” wasn’t initially my favorite song (that would be “Sleep In The Park”), but the more I listened to the lyrics, the more it stuck with me. This performance of that song is also plaintive and heartfelt, and honest.

You could label Solange different, or bohemian, or retro, but instead, I’ll just label her by saying I like it. A lot. Vocally, she stays in her limited range and lane, but it works for her.

What do you think of this performance?

What Do We Think: Watch The Duck Get It “Poppin’ Off” With Their Blend Of Dub Step & Trap Rap

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Dec 10, 12

Do you like dub step? Well, coming out of ATL (by way of Montgomery, AL) is a new group of 3 DJ’s/instrumentalists called Watch The Duck (Jessie Rankins, Eddie Smith & Jonathan Wells). They call their music “trap step” — trap rap + dub step mixed together. I’ve also heard it called soul dub step. In any case, it’s fairly interesting.

Take some simple, dumbed down dub step progressions, add some James Brown posturing with the vocals, throw in some popping and locking, and you have the “Poppin’ Off” video that you see above. In my mind, it’s like Outkast, James Brown and Soulja Boy had a illicit affair with Skrillex.

Though not the most musically invigorating or innovative thing ever, I think it’s an interesting union of different styles. Dub step as a whole has become homogenized and mainstreamed (as well as “trap” music), but I for one would have never really thought to put them together. It’s ultimately not that big of a stretch, and kind of works on some levels.

Gotta give it Watch The Duck for this one — I wonder how far outside of the Georgia state line this will progress. If you’re intrigued, you can listen to their mixtape Rub-A-Dub (which they say is R&B + dub step = Rub-A-Dub) on SoundCloud here. And also check their official website. Tell them Tha Feedback sent you!
