    • Charles Bradley’s Soulful Belt And Wail Is “Strictly Reserved For You”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Apr 10, 13

Charles Bradley’s story is incredible, but I will leave it to your very capable fingers to Google!

“Strictly Reserved For You” is Bradley’s new single, and being that he’s on Daptone Records, of course his is a classically soul sound, the likes of which we haven’t seen for a while and don’t see these days often anymore. His voice hearkens back to a time when the focus was on the pain and emotion that the soul voice contained. It’s a welcome disruption from the current version of “soul” and R&B which we are served up by Top 40 radio on a daily basis.

Charles Bradley is a seemingly out of place mix of James Brown’s look, an old soul, a hardened life, and yet, an almost pure, youthful vibe as he’s stepping into his own at such a later point in life. He may never sell a million records, but his talent and determination speak for itself. “Strictly Reserved For You” is taken from his latest album Victim Of Love, which is available now. The “Screaming Eagle Of Soul” has earned his moniker no doubt, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

What Do We Think: Robert Raimon Roy Searches, Finds & Loses The Ideal Woman In “Axela”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 9, 13

Randomly discovered this track by a relatively unknown singer named Robert Raimon Roy. His track “Axela” is a play on the name “Alexa” — as in, he was expecting to meet someone named Alexa, and instead, is met by her by the true her. Makes sense?

We make expectations in this day and age of computer love, for example. Once you meet in person, however, things are what you’d imagined they’d be. Not bad, not wrong, but different from the image that we may have conjured in our heads.

The visual is a great match after you’ve found an explanation for the song itself. The video premiered on this site here and also had an explanation from the artist himself:

“The song is about projecting the woman within on the woman without,” Roy writes in an email. “In this scenario, a real girl named Alexa becomes the illusory presence ‘Axela.’”

The song’s haunting melody, lean instrumentation, and thick harmonies are immediately captivating in my opinion. Roy offers a darker take on R&B/soul, in the vein of a Frank Ocean, but offers much more along the lines of vocal capability with his falsetto, a la Justin Timberlake. It’s the weird congregation of two types of the two mainstream types of “R&B” that seems to grab most of the public’s attention these days.

It’s a great song that stands alone. Apparently Roy doesn’t like to be confined to more than one genre or style, after taking a listen to his most recent album Le Tigre Blanc, but this song alone is great and I’m glad to have found it. Check out his site here. Thoughts?

Kelly Rowland Likes Her “Kisses Down Low”, Unlike Her Record Sales — Will This Song Help?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 15, 13

I love Kelly Rowland. She is an amazingly attractive African-American woman and I wish her the best in all her endeavors.

But this is yet another boring song with another boring video with the same fine as hell Kelly Rowland doing her best to make us buy her records.

As much as I love looking at Kelendria, it takes an act of God for me to be able to sit through an album of hers, and I don’t think that will change with her latest single “Kisses Down Low”.

It’s ok enough. Mike Will Made It is the hot producer right now, but the lyric combined with the simplicity of this track make it utterly go nowhere quick. Kelly’s vocal barely changes through the song, and she doesn’t really have enough presence vocally or visually in this clip to make this interesting enough to watch more than once.

I love you though Kelly! Can I take you on a date? I got your kisses…just don’t sing to me.

Luke James’ Ledger Is Definitely In The Black With New Track “I.O.U.”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Mar 15, 13

luke james i.o.u. single i want you grammy nominated wolfjames

Luke James has dropped another joint, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why y’all are latching on to this dude’s vocal skills and great songs…

Luke definitely isn’t a “pop” singer in the current sense, such as a Bruno Mars or a Justin Timberlake, but hands down, he has the better vocal skill and soulful interpretation of the material he is presented. It’s all been very fresh and original, especially his choice of the types of musical beds he sings over. “I.O.U.”

Luke has a voice and a talent that harks back to an older time, where music had a swing & sway, a certain confident braggadocio, and an unabashedly stringent requirement for the best vocal performances on every occasion. “I.O.U.” features his signature croon over a breezy, laid back and smoothed out beat. Get into this.

And to further prove his exceptional talent, he’s even uploaded a quick version of him singing it a capella on the streets of the Big Apple. Hit that after the jump. Y’all like this new one?

Adrian Younge Teams Up With The Delfonics For The Classic-Skewing “Stop And Look (And You Have Found Love)”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 13

“Stop, and look, and you have found love….”

This refrain is hauntingly catchy, and you will walk away from this video repeating this in your head and mouthing it while you’re just sitting around. I promise.

Adrian Younge is a multi-instrumentalist renaissance man, who wears many hats. After garnering attention as an indie artist, he went on to score the majority of the Black Dynamite movie, and has had his hands in some of everything ever since. He struck upon the idea of doing a collaboration with William Hart of The Delfonics, and this single is a result of that pairing. “Stop And Look (And You Have Found Love)” is a mix of the old and the new, and is an imagining of what a Delfonics record might sound like in 2012.

The song is a testament to the timelessness of Soul music and its figures. William Hart makes an appearance and looks good, and it’s interesting to sing him in the visual amongst a group of hip-hop heads — 90′s hip-heads at that. I like this joint, and I look forward to hearing more of their pairing.

And of course, who didn’t love The Delfonics?

Check out a write up about the process and ideas behind the making of this song here as well.

What Do We Think: Short Stories Drop A Gem “On The Way” To A Growing Partnership

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 18, 13

One of my favorite producers from the UK, Sampha (SBTRKT, Jessie Ware), has partnered with producer Koreless (Jacques Greene) to form the experimental duo Short Stories. They dropped the single “Let It Go” with a B-side song called “On The Way”, and that’s the visual that we are being treated to above.

The video is pretty much a straight-ahead affair, featuring child actors as the younger dopplegangers of Koreless and Sampha, playing instruments and cavorting about in balloons with flying instruments headed towards them as well.

However, it’s not about the visual. It’s really about the vibe of the song. The downtempo electro affair is perfect, and is similar of what the two have done with the others talent that they have worked with. It may not be your cup of tea, but give it a spin. Don’t let the video dissuade you from listening to something new. The UK has been really killing the past few years, and I’m a huge fan of SBTRKT. What do you think?

Chrisette Michele’s Asking For “A Couple Of Forevers” And I’ll Give Them Gladly!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 18, 13

I’ve been a little perplexed with Chrisette Michele’s career as of late. She’s recently released a free mixtape but had kind of quiet on the scene for awhile. Judging from her Twitter, she’s been working steadily, but her music output seemed to have dropped after her last album, which I really wasn’t a fan of. Her sounds has seemed to mature but also have gotten a bit more eclectic as she broke away from the sound I’m sure her label had always championed. Her song “Charades” could have gone over more smoother in my opinion without the tacking on of a 2 Chainz verse, but I feel as if it went largely went unnoticed by all but the diehard fans.

However, with “A Couple Of Forevers”, Chrisette has reignited my interest in her solo output. “A Couple Of Forevers” is a rich, warm song that she tackles with much aplomb. I feel as if she’s more interested in this material and thus sings it with a renewed vigor and gravitas. It especially ramps up at the end on the ad-libs — it seems as if Chrisette is in a place vocally that is still strong and rooted in an even more soulful way. Producers Pop & Oak created a fantastic musical bed for her to emote and stretch her vocals over as well. It all works and congeals together very well, and in a very organic and authentic way.

“A Couple Of Forevers” is the proper single from her upcoming album Better that is slated to drop April 20th, and I for one am looking forward to it if she’s going to deliver a body of work that is full of singles/songs like this. Are you a fan? Does this song pique your interest in her music again? Did you download the mixtape? Let us know!

What Do We Think: Lion Babe’s “Treat Me Like Fire” Should Be Handled With Care

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 15, 13

My good friend Durand Bernarr (@alcoholharmony on Twitter, if you’re looking for some good sanging!) put me onto Lion Babe during a trip to Los Angeles, and I haven’t stopped listening to this song EVER SINCE. I love “Treat Me Like Fire”. She’s like a mashup of Rihanna, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, J*DaVeY and some other stuff I can’t quite put my finger on.

The track for this joint is “fire” indeed — and the video is the cherry on top of an already imaginative yet solid and soulful song that stands up as fantastic all by itself.

It’s a bit abstract but yet congeals as a very solid introduction to Lion Babe (Jillian Hervey + Lucas Goodman), and I definitely am looking forward to more from them. Jillian Hervey is also actress Vanessa Williams‘ daughter, if you didn’t know. She is definitely blazing a musical path much different from her 80′s pop star mother.

Go cop this song on iTunes — I did. First actual MP3 I’ve purchased in quite a while.

Somehow, Stacy Barthe Has Made Going To “Hell” Sound SO Appealing

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Feb 15, 13

Stacy Barthe has a new EP which she’s made available to download for free (but will TOTALLY accept your donations also), and “Hell Yeah!” is taken from the P.S. I LOVE YOU EP that dropped earlier this week. Produced by K. Roosevelt, it features Rick Ross and Stacy’s voice pleasantly lilts over the track — but take another listen. The lyrics, which Stacy is dangerous with, and the title are a bit off-putting.

You can cop the EP here or take a listen after the jump if you’d like. There are a couple of great tracks on there. Stacy’s brooding, introspective lyrics always take me to a place and I like to let her warm alto envelop me while I analyze her heartfelt and honest lyrics. As a writer, she’s great. She’s a decent singer as well, but I feel like her music is all about vibe and mood, and she does that well on her solo efforts released thus far.

Also check out “Stingy” — like that one as well!

What Do We Think: Ryan McDermott Wants To Buy Your Ticket To “Paradise”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 14, 13

I haven’t been able to find much about Ryan McDermott, aside from the fact that he’s a new signing to G.O.O.D. Music and was signed on the spot after a personal audition for Kanye West himself.

What I do know is that I’ve heard about this song for a while and finally tracked down a video for “Paradise”. Mr. McDermott submits his slinky, stacked vocal, futuristic version of Blue Eyed Soul with that the stabs and kicks that the music bed for “Paradise” is. I like this joint. His vocal is singular to me, and stands apart from the heavy feel of the track. The slight nasal and high timbre of his voice is a great counter to the kicks and subsonics that anchor this track.

In the video we see him loving and leaving, leading us to think that “Paradise” is only a one night stand and the morning sex that follows afterwards. It’s a great musical introduction to Ryan’s sound I believe, and I look forward to what he has to offer with the assistance of Mr. West. If this track is any indication of Ryan’s original sound, the two pairing up might produce some interesting R&B for our ears.

      What do you think?
