    • Explore Music: “You Know You Like” AlunaGeorge

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 24, 12

AlunaGeorge hit Pitchfork yesterday, and I’ve already digested and figured out that the best song in my opinion thus far that they’ve released is definitely the sultry, slithery funk that is “You Know You Like It”.

Aluna Francis’ tentative voice mixed with her Brit accent and light but agile voice are what make this track standout, and George Reid’s track channels the funk of yore mixed with an airy, electronic and sub-bass heavy sound that writhes up and down your spine.

AlunaGeorge got their start randomly making music, and they have a new EP hitting shelves as well. This video though reminds me of Kimbra (especially in the above video) meets Beverley Knight. And Robyn. And they had a electro R&B baby. They got their start off as friends making music for fun on their MacBook, only to realize that they’re actually kind of good at it. Rags to riches!

What do you all think of AlunaGeorge? Check out their latest song “Just A Touch” from their EP of the same name as the video above, due out today, below:

Album Reviews: Monica’s “New Life” Isn’t Anything We Haven’t Musically Experienced Before

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 10, 12

      Monica – New Life
      2.75 stars out of 5

In the classic plotting of an average pop star’s trajectory, Monica is on a “good” upswing. She’s married, she’s happy, she’s mending relationships (see: duet with Brandy on “It All Belongs To Me”), she’s maturing and she’s finally becoming a woman. The styling, the songs, the placement in the media, EVERYTHING is being positioned to mirror this fact. With her latest album New Life, Monica is embracing these things vocally and lyrically, for the most part. There are some fumbles and forays into all too familiar territory, but for the most part, she’s aging gracefully as illustrated on this disc.

Explore Music: Jai Paul’s “Jasmine” Is An Aural Trip Through A Rubberband-Soul Alternative Universe

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 9, 12

You’ve probably never heard of Jai Paul. If you’ve heard Beyonce’s “End of Time”, then you’ve heard of Jai Paul. His song “BTSU” was sampled for the intro of that song — specifically the “don’t f**k with me” line. So if you thought you did hear the f-bomb at the beginning of the song — you did!

Jai Paul is an elusive beatsmith and creator, but the two songs he has released have been AMAZING. Even “Jasmine” is tagged as a “demo” officially for whatever reason. But the slinky soul, funky, hand-clapped menagerie of melody that is this song is undeniable. The vibe seeps into your psyche and you find yourself wanting to hit repeat and run it back.

Jai Paul’s vocals are light and nimble but laced in old soul and new sensibilities. It both counteracts and melds into the track, with just enough tentativeness to draw you in even more, listen upon listen.

I’m hoping he’ll release material more often, but “Jasmine” is a dope a** song, and you need to get up on this immediately.

SWV’s “All About You” Is Heavy On Sharing Leads But Light On Catchiness

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Apr 9, 12

“All About You” is the latest offering from SWV’s upcoming album I Missed Us, which is due out April 17th.

“All About You” attempts to channel that 90′s realness that “Co-Sign” seemed to naturally possess. Much to my chagrin, it feels a bit more forced this time around. The song is light on catchiness, heavy on verses and nothing that really makes the chorus stand out as “hooky”. “Co-Sign” was a fair-to-middling punch out the gate, but “All About You” doesn’t bode well in my opinion.

What if “Co-Sign” was the absolute strongest song on the new album? The days of strong singles and weak albums are long gone in an iTunes era, SWV…

There’s also a lot of singing on this song by the rest of the group. It’s not a bad thing, but the changes in voices simply illustrate further the fact that this song isn’t really catchy at all. While Taj and LeeLee are decent, they are no Coko, and the song drags each time there’s a change in lead vocal.

I’m definitely feeling this song as much as I did “Co-Sign”. Is it a harbinger of things to expect from the rest of I Missed Us? Let’s hope not.

      Talk about it below.

Whitney Houston Shines & Sparkles In Trailer For “Sparkle”; Will You Watch?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Apr 2, 12

R.I.P. to one the greatest to ever do it, Whitney Houston.

In her last movie role ever, Whitney Houston has taken center stage with her passing in the upcoming reboot of the 70′s movie Sparkle.

Whitney shines and there’s a clip of her singing “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” as well that appears in the trailer. Set for release on August 17th, 2012, Sparkle also stars Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, and Tika Sumpter as the singing sisters. It also features appearances by Cee Lo Green, with new music from all 3 of the musical acts featured. Shot in Detroit, the trailer appears to be accurate of the time period that the original project evoked.

Hopefully this will be a breakout movie for Jordin Sparks, and a final and living testament to the greatness that was Whitney Houston, no matter how she passed from us. I cannot wait to see this movie, as I love projects like this, period. It may be a rehash of “Dreamgirls_-esque proportions, but I’d be ok with that. Hearing Whitney one last time gave me chills. Rest in peace Nippy.

Will you be seeing this remake? Have you seen the original? Take the poll below, and weigh in!

The Chicken Did Not Cross The Road For This Commercial, Mary J. Blige.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Apr 2, 12

      Mary J. Blige.

      This is so wrong.

      This is TERRIBLE.

Jesus Cray Christ, this is bad.

You know, if you wanted to sell more records just…get caught coming out of a club looking a hot mess like all the other stars do these days. I’d rather listen to Jennifer Hudson talk about birds in the sky and feeling good than this warbled monstrosity about chicken wraps and flour tortillas.

      Lady, please!!

      Happy Monday y’all.

Update: The commercial was pulled, but according to Burger King, it was pulled for “licensing issues”. Right. That ish was just BAD. But ok, I’m going to let Burger King cook LOL.

Tank Thinks He’s “Underrated”, And I Think This Video Is Underwhelming…

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 29, 12

      So…Tank made a video.

Excuse me, Tank’s LABEL paid for a video, for a song he wrote, and got paid to write, about how much of a star he is but no one knows it?

Tank’s so “underrated”, unrecognized, unloved, etc. But this video/song isn’t simply about him being a greater talent. It’s about him wanting more “stuff”. Cars, money, etc.

This makes me angry. Mostly because Tank sounds fantastic (as usual) but it’s this kind of faux lament and cockiness that turns me off to his music.

I’m going to wager that for the most part, Tank isn’t a bigger “star” because despite his penchant for excellent vocals, his material that he puts out for himself is usually cliched and mediocre — though he sings it well.

What do y’all think about this video? Maybe I’m off base but I’m very turned off by this…

Toni Braxton’s “I Heart You” Video Is Useless Fun For The Whole Family

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 29, 12

Y’all know I love me some Toni Braxton, fair warning.

Toni Braxton’s newest single and her much heralded “return” (this time as an independent artist taking the reins for herself) is the dance-floor targeted “I Heart You”. Personally, it’s superfluous pop, and is nothing to write home about, though with a few repeats, it’s enjoyable on some levels. I like it because allegedly Toni wrote and produced it herself, and she sounds great over it. Toni can sing over anything.

That being said, I liked this song better when it was “Make My Heart” from her Pulse album. That song was a knock to me. The video for “I Heart You” is just as superfluous as the song. It’s a lot of random dancing, some tepid choreography, Toni looking great and vamping about…nothing too special or unexpected. Toni even tries to bust out some choreography, LOL.

The only qualm I have is the long to short hair don’t care that is going on in this joint. LOL. She looks like a whole different person! What is that about?! Choose one for this 3 minute video, please LOL.

This song doesn’t really seem to be energizing folks that much, but it is available on iTunes in the “full” version, which is different from the free version she first released. Will you buy?

Elle Varner Can’t Get Enough Of New Found Love At First Sight In “Refill”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 28, 12

Elle Varner’s smoky contralto has really been growing on me, and even with this latest single “Refill”, it took me a couple of spins to really get into it and appreciate it.

I love what I am assuming is a banjo on the track, as that is definitely different. Also really love this video — it’s appropriate, cute, has a great story, and is shot really well. Elle’s voice takes center stage, and the video does well to tie the storyline of the song into the storyline of the video. I even would go so far to say that I love how the “country” sounding banjo plays into the fact that at the very beginning of the video, they are from a small town, cheering on to victory in the big city.

Elle Varner’s “Only Wanna Give It To U” came and went for me, but I think “Refill” has a bit more “meat on its bones” so to speak, and will get more replay value from me and my iTunes collection. What do you think of this song and video?

What Do We Think: Tara King Doesn’t “Give A F_ck”; Do We?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Mar 28, 12

One of my friend’s sent me Tara King’s EP Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love, and the standout cut for me was the song “I Don’t Give A F_ck”. I’ve had it in rotation for a couple of weeks, so I thought I’d share it with you all to see what you thought of it!

“I Don’t Give A F_ck” was the instant standout to me on her project. It’s just a catchy urban track with a nice level of braggadocio that I haven’t heard come from a female singer. Whoever produced this beat went in, and I love the subtle changes in the music bed throughout. Tara King is a decent singer, but this particular track is all about swagger and swing, and I love the line “Don’t matter how the cards fall, I’mma play my own game…I call it solitaire.”

Tara’s worked with some heavy hitters as an artist and also as a songwriter, and just recently came off the road from singing backgrounds with Lupe Fiasco. This is her first foray into solo stardom. Give it a listen and offer up some feedback as only we know how!

You can check her on Bandcamp, Tumblr, Twitter, and get the free download of Kissed By A Bullet…Shot By Love here.
