    • Elle Varner Can’t Get Enough Of New Found Love At First Sight In “Refill”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 28, 12

Elle Varner’s smoky contralto has really been growing on me, and even with this latest single “Refill”, it took me a couple of spins to really get into it and appreciate it.

I love what I am assuming is a banjo on the track, as that is definitely different. Also really love this video — it’s appropriate, cute, has a great story, and is shot really well. Elle’s voice takes center stage, and the video does well to tie the storyline of the song into the storyline of the video. I even would go so far to say that I love how the “country” sounding banjo plays into the fact that at the very beginning of the video, they are from a small town, cheering on to victory in the big city.

Elle Varner’s “Only Wanna Give It To U” came and went for me, but I think “Refill” has a bit more “meat on its bones” so to speak, and will get more replay value from me and my iTunes collection. What do you think of this song and video?

Ring The Alarms, Sirens And Take Shelter From Dawn Richard’s “Bombs”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 27, 12

      Dawn Richard.

I’m so glad you’ve gotten your independence from Diddy. That was a SMART move. The music you are handing out these days is really quite good, and I’ve been genuinely impressed with about 95% of the material that has come from your pen and voice.

Seriously, this visual for “Bombs” is crazy! It feels TOP notch. The production, the choreography, everything. I love this joint, and I’ve watched it 3 times. Dawn looks great (but I’ve always said she is fahn), and these backup dancers?!

Dawn’s EP Armor On dropped on iTunes and is available for purchase. I’m going to try and crank out a review here soon, but cop it. Dawn’s one the only artists in this day and age whose stuff I cop sight unseen. She has a certain quality and level of talent and professionalism that has never left me disappointed. This EP features 10 songs and is sure to whet your appetite for what R&B has been missing.

“Nobody’s Perfect” But J. Cole Has Missy Elliott & That Is Pretty Close

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 14, 12

If you’ve been a reader of this blog, then you know that I am one of the biggest Missy Elliott fan ever. Her talent, creativity, catalogue and more have made me a fan for a long time. I won’t steal J. Cole’s shine by giving it all to Missy, but it’s rare that we get a Missy sighting. Props to J. Cole!

      J. Cole’s album hasn’t gotten much burn with me, but this song? One of my favorites. Listened to it all the time! I didn’t even know that they were doing a video for it. And I have no complaints about this video. It has Missy. It has Cole World. I love all the small details that director Colin Tilley put into this visual as well. Hats off.

But Missy — Missy is still keeping it classy. And I’d really like for her to do a full R&B album now. RIGHT NOW. Minaj who?

Does Usher’s “Climax” Video Get You Anywhere Near Yours?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 12, 12

This new Usher video leaves me nonplussed. I’m really not invested in this song visually, though honestly, I’ve got to say that I immediately was not interested from jump.

That’s not to say I have a problem with the song though.

Usher looks and sounds great, is aging well, but that’s about all I can say. I’m not his market though, so y’all tell me if it moved you to the point where you wanted to run that back. He said the track isn’t about sex, and this video casts him as a spurned lover. But the narrative is a bit unclear at times, and I think he has tried to defocus the sexual undertones so much in this visual that you watch it and are like, “OK, so…what next?”

      Thoughts?

Umpteen Years Later, Brandy And Monica Are Still Fighting Over A Man.

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 5, 12

We don’t learn lessons? We don’t grow as people and women?

I’m glad Monica and Brandy are back together on a duet. I’m glad that both of their voices sound up to par. I’m even glad Monica steals the shine vocally a bit on this track, despite my initial inclination towards Brandy’s voice. The video showed me that Monica really DID put in work — and Brandy’s vocal came off as a little bit safer.

That being said, I still don’t care for this song, the subject matter, the trite lyrics, this boring video, and the lackadaisical “tribute” to Whitney Houston at the end (the car blowing up was of course a tribute to “Waiting To Exhale” no doubt) all do nothing for me. I want to love this song. I do. But I can’t. It’s so safe! And I wanted more from them besides 4 minutes of glamour shots and old rehashed story lines being passed off as a sequel. I needed more.

Quit tricking off on these dudes. *shrugs*

I’m split. What do y’all think?

Since I Am “A Man” & Think Like One, I Think J. Hud Doesn’t Need Ne-Yo For “Think Like A Man”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Mar 2, 12

The only thing I’m thinking about, and thinking hard at that, is if I can get with this song.

Now, I’m going to backpedal and give J. Hud credit for her last self-titled album. In hindsight, that album grew on me majorly once I adjusted to the fact that Jennifer is just a belter. Period. She will never really NOT be a belter. The songs grew, the production made headway into my heart, and “No One Gonna Love You” become my repeated jam on many occasions. Despite the bad grammar in many of the songs and titles, I ended up enjoying 3/4′s of that album.

“Think Like A Man” suffers one minor pitfall — Ne-Yo. Why & how Ne-Yo weasels his way onto duets with all these great singers (relative to him, of course) baffles me. But this song is just fluffy and asinine enough to not even really matter. The movie that it is taken from is seemingly trying to bring the blockbuster soundtrack back like in the 90′s. Rick Ross is always meh to me. Unneeded and clearly there for perceived appeal. Give me a version without him and without Ne-Yo, and I’m good I think. Kevin Hart’s comedic appeal is always fine with me at this point as well.

So — Who’s going to see the movie? Who likes this song? Who cannot stand Steve Harvey? Just wondering. Spill it!

Teedra Moses Wants “Another Luvr”. I Want Another Video.

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 23, 12

I love Teedra Moses‘ latest mixtape, The Luxurious Undergrind. The songs, the vibe, the sequencing, the production…it was all just RIGHT and worked. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while, and now that she’s signed to Maybach Music Group, it’s looking more and more like we will get another proper sophomore album from her. Finally!

In the meantime, she’s released “Another Luvr” in remix form with Wale (also a MMG signee) in order to hold us over.

While I’m glad for a visual and glad to see that Rick Ross hasn’t stuck her on a backburner as of yet. This video is kind of…just here. Teedra looks gerat, the song still goes hard, but I really would have rather her just work on getting out a proper album NOW instead of taking a break for this almost 5 minute long piece of “art”. It’s all good though, it’s good to see her back on the grind.

Can We “Co-Sign” SWV’s New Song & Video?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 21, 12

I used to be a hardcore SWV fan. And a big fan of Coko’s solo (Gospel) albums. And while I REALLY wanted to like this song, the video isn’t really helping me along the path to falling back in love with SWV.

From jump, “Co-Sign” comes across as awkward to me. I’m not sure if it’s the production or the song itself, but the ladies still sound the same. That’s a good thing. I’ve replayed the song a bit as well, because the “swing & sway” of the song felt VERY 90′s, very throwback, and very true to their original song. They didn’t come back out pop-lock-dropping-tooted-booty and all that.

At the same time – I need more. This song feels a bit dry, unemotional, and very paint-by-numbers all at the same time. This video simply drives that point home, because the visual is exactly the same. Nothing flashy, nothing….interesting.

I’m never going to clown a solid vocal, but even back in the day, SWV had a bit more “zip” to them. They could have given us something to “really” co-sign, if you know what I mean.

      What do y’all think?

Cassie’s A Few Cards Short Of A Full Deck In “King Of Hearts”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 14, 12

It probably made sense for Cassie to take the dance route. It’s all the rage, she’s not a belter, she’s pretty, the gay clubs might like it, blah blah blah. No-brainer, right?

This song is boring. Cassie’s vocal is boring. The video is boring. She is boring. I’m bored.

Sure, Cassie’s good to look at. But really, we’ve been LOOKING at her for quite a while now. Aren’t we supposed to be listening to her? Am I the only one listening?

This is the music biz, and as of now, Cassie is the only woman that is publicly signed to Bad Boy. If this is who Diddy is hedging his bets on, then I just don’t know.

But it’ll probably pick up steam overseas, Cassie will move, and then we won’t have to worry about her. I’d be okay with that.

If we’re doing dance vocals, I’ll take Jennifer Hudson on a David Guetta track, Kelly Rowland over an Alex Gaudino track, or even Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness”. Fail Cassie. Fail.

Jay-Z And Kanye Unleash “Ni**as In Paris” Video. I Don’t Care?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 9, 12

      That’s it?

After the epicness that was the “Otis” video, we get some live concert footage? I mean, I didn’t get to go to the concert when it came to my neck of the woods as I was out of town and also spent that money instead on seeing PRINCE (HELLO!), but the concert itself looked to be pretty dope. All the tweets I saw from those who WENT to the concert seemed to be pretty positive, and of course, I heard numerous times that “Ni**as In Paris” was performed as an encore up to 7 times in some cities. That being said — I don’t care.

Watch The Throne is a big concept record, features two of the top talents in the hip-hop industry, so I feel like any visuals coming off of that record should be epic. This video, while cool, isn’t all that. I mean, I just wanted more. But I’m thinking the sales of the record didn’t justify that. The pop cultural cache and critical acclaim has probably been worth more than the digital sales and streams of everything else combined.

I did LOL at the epilepsy warning. Can I get a “this might be lame” warning as well?

In any case, this song’s beat still goes hard, and always incites mini-riots at the club. So let’s just act like this video didn’t happen and continue to enjoy the song at ignorant levels in our iPods, yes? Yes.
