I am a huge Disclosure fan. I wore that album out. And this was a favorite song of mine as well. AND — there are some amazing vocals on this album as well.
So why the addition of Mary J. Blige, The Queen of Hip-Hop & R&B?
I hear it was an organic move — she joined them at their sold out shows in NYC recently, and they decided to make it official (or maybe it was vice-versa, who knows). That being said, Mary J. Blige is no Soulful House diva, and this vocal shows why. I love Mary J. Blige, but she doesn’t have the strong, cascading and effortless vocal that deep house or soulful house usually requires. This performance feels a little strained and forced. It really adds nothing to the song, other maybe helping to break Disclosure in America to our audiences a bit more. Other than that, there are any number of other vocalists they could have added.
Have you heard of Inaya Day? Check out her cover of Vanity 6′s “Nasty Girl”. That’s a vocal. Hit that after the jump for an example of what COULD have been.
