Live Performances: Gregory Porter Sings “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” On A Subway. Enough Said.

Gregory Porter is one of my favorite voices these days, and his song “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” is such an amazing treat, but mostly, because of his voice. Mr. Porter’s voice is simultaneously commanding and relaxing. He sings with the ease of a jazz vocalist, but his voice has the gravitas of any of the great soul singers.

He’s recently signed with major label Blue Note Records for his 3rd album, and I’m looking forward to more of his music.

Imagine Dragons Highlight The Frailty Of Humanity With “Demons”

If you’ve been living under a rock, then you may have never heard of Imagine Dragons. Their massive hit “Radioactive” still spins in the Top 20 of many radio stations around the nation, but the video for their song “Demons” really struck an emotional cord for me.

The video starts off with what you may think will be just another performance video, but you quickly see that is has a more poignant take on being at a concert. Imagine Dragons illustrates how you never truly know what people are going through in their lives, and how we are all connected by our pasts, secrets, innermost thoughts and life experience on some level. We’re taken through the crowd as we see people’s inner “demons” that they deal with while they are simultaneously at an Imagine Dragons concert for relief, entertainment, and who knows what else.

The lyrics of this song came to life even more for me through the visual proffered up by the band, and in my opinion, that’s what a video should do.

I’d RSVP For Ciara’s “Body Party” Before I’d Purchase A Concert Ticket…

I’ve always had a perverse fascination with Ciara’s musical discography. I loved “Goodies”, and one of my other favorites from her was “Get Up” from the Step Up soundtrack. Other than that, I tolerated “Work”, but mostly because she was in a Verizon commercial, well, twerking on a countertop. Wasn’t enough to make me switch carriers, but I enjoyed her twerk way more than her treble-clef whisper shenanigans.

Her latest single “Body Party” from her upcoming self-titled album is an ode and throwback to the 90′s, in more ways than one. The song has an interpolation of Ghost Town DJ’s “My Boo”, and the prominent scene in which Ciara is stripping for Future (her both on and off screen love) is straight from Jamie Lee Curtis’ star turn in the 90′s movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, “True Lies”:

The song isn’t terrible — I don’t mind the record. And I’m always a fan of Ciara visually. She’s a beautiful woman, and her body and shape have always been the stuff that many a man’s dreams have been made of. Her voice has never been the strongest, but she’s done her best Janet Jackson impersonation for many a year now, and “Body Party” is no exception. There’s no tired back bends this video, but there’s plenty of twerking, gyrating and barely clothed dancing to truly see what kind of party Future is having with Ciara’s body.

The video should have stuck to the “True Lies” theme, because the party scene with the gratuitous placement of some random headphones really seems out of place. However, it gives Ciara a chance to do her best 90′s swag dress and dance, and allows for copious cameos (did y’all see Jazze Pha?! Where has he been?!) and to pay for some of the costs of renting that mansion via the Denon headphones. Twitter was abuzz with both dislike and like of this video, but what do y’all think? I’m torn between loving watching Ciara in a bra and panties and hearing a boring version of “My Boo” without the Miami bass that made it such a good (if not dated) 1-hit wonder…

“How Many Drinks” Will It Take To Get You To Download Miguel’s New Single?

Miguel’s video for “How Many Drinks?” has come to us, and this time, with the addition of Kendrick Lamar.

“How Many Drinks?” was one of my favorites from Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream album, so I am glad to see it get the video treatment. The first thought that comes to mind when I see this video? Miguel is Prince meets Ziggy Stardust aka David Bowie with a little bit of urban braggadocio and machismo thrown in for good measure.

That being said, I really liked Kendrick’s verse on this version, and it was nice to see them showing their home city of LA love with their attire.

Not sure this video/single will make Miguel any new fans, but it’s a decent outing from an album that has greatly reached and surpassed many expectations. It’ll be interesting to see what Miguel’s next album will look like. How will he top Kaleidoscope Dream? Has he peaked?

I do have qualms with people calling both Kendrick and Miguel’s albums “classics” — they need to be a bit more time tested (both the albums AND the artists) before we start handing out superlatives such as those.

Charles Bradley’s Soulful Belt And Wail Is “Strictly Reserved For You”

Charles Bradley’s story is incredible, but I will leave it to your very capable fingers to Google!

“Strictly Reserved For You” is Bradley’s new single, and being that he’s on Daptone Records, of course his is a classically soul sound, the likes of which we haven’t seen for a while and don’t see these days often anymore. His voice hearkens back to a time when the focus was on the pain and emotion that the soul voice contained. It’s a welcome disruption from the current version of “soul” and R&B which we are served up by Top 40 radio on a daily basis.

Charles Bradley is a seemingly out of place mix of James Brown’s look, an old soul, a hardened life, and yet, an almost pure, youthful vibe as he’s stepping into his own at such a later point in life. He may never sell a million records, but his talent and determination speak for itself. “Strictly Reserved For You” is taken from his latest album Victim Of Love, which is available now. The “Screaming Eagle Of Soul” has earned his moniker no doubt, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

Kelly Rowland Likes Her “Kisses Down Low”, Unlike Her Record Sales — Will This Song Help?

I love Kelly Rowland. She is an amazingly attractive African-American woman and I wish her the best in all her endeavors.

But this is yet another boring song with another boring video with the same fine as hell Kelly Rowland doing her best to make us buy her records.

As much as I love looking at Kelendria, it takes an act of God for me to be able to sit through an album of hers, and I don’t think that will change with her latest single “Kisses Down Low”.

It’s ok enough. Mike Will Made It is the hot producer right now, but the lyric combined with the simplicity of this track make it utterly go nowhere quick. Kelly’s vocal barely changes through the song, and she doesn’t really have enough presence vocally or visually in this clip to make this interesting enough to watch more than once.

I love you though Kelly! Can I take you on a date? I got your kisses…just don’t sing to me.

Watch As James Blake’s “Retrograde” Is The Soundtrack To Earth’s Destruction

I love James Blake, and man, this new record of his is KILLER aurally. I am THOROUGHLY enjoying it.

I won’t lie and act like I totally understand what is going on in this video — end of the world? Aliens? Biker aliens? — but the visual itself is dark and a bit haunting (and matches the song).

James Blake’s last album was a favorite. Sometimes you have to find the song that fits your mood and that clicks with you at that moment, but with “Retrograde”, I can listen to this anytime. It feels a bit more accessible than the tunes from his last eponymous album. His new body of work Overgrown drops in April, and I’m looking forward to it.

I honestly cannot stop listening to “Retrograde” and I think you won’t be able to either after this first spin. Let me know if I’m wrong.

These darn Brits are taking over!

Justin Timberlake Angles To Be A Purveyor Of Cool With “Suit & Tie” Visual

I’ve been here for Justin Timberlake as a solo artist from day one, let’s be clear. I’ve always been a fan (though I can’t help but wonder if JC Chasez was to have REALLY gotten a chance to be a solo artist, who’d be the better artist musically) and was excited just like everyone else when he announced that he’d be doing a new album.

With baited breath, we all watched the teaser video he did, and then once “Suit & Tie” dropped, we all exhaled.

For me, that exhale was more of a gasp because I don’t LOVE this record. It’s decent. It’s nice. In the context of the rest of the album, it will probably make a LOT more sense. But as a single, it has NOT wowed me at all. I remember when “Sexyback” or “Cry Me A River” dropped, I was instantly drawn in and invested in Justin’s latest pop opus that was sure to follow. “Suit & Tie” gives me chopped & screwed Justin (which leads me to think, the track preceeding it on the album is one of a similar tempo to the chopped & screwed beginning of “Suit & Tie), then transitions into a smooth, easy breezy track, with a mostly superfluos rap from Jay-Z.

It’s a nice sentiment and ultimately, it’s not a terrible song at all. I’ve yet to purposefully really spin this track, however.

The video continues along with the cool, grown man, Rat Pack-esque factor that Justin seems to be pushing with this track and even the Grammy performance. It’s a decent outing visually — a little dancing, smoky rooms, sipping the finest dark liquors — things “grown” men do. Justin’s married now. Jay-Z is the elder statesman of Hip-Hop. It makes sense. But why does it have to be SO boring?

That’s what I walk away from this song and now video wondering. I was hoping one would change the other, but I’m going to just go ahead and wait for the Gospelfied soul that is “Pusher Love Girl” and wait for the album to drop in March.

All Diddy Does Is “Scream & Shout” On The “Urban” Remix To Will.I.Am’s Latest Hit

I have a confession.

I got into a Twitter war over the original version of “Scream & Shout” with some of my followers about my general disdain for will.I.am and his songs. I thought “Scream & Shout” was phoned in, Britney really didn’t add anything, and blah, I thought the Black Eyed Peas went on hiatus and was hoping William did, too. But after a bunch more listens (partially to being deluged by it on the radio every 5 minutes), it grew on me. It became a guilty pleasure.

And then will.I.am made a a hood version and I got sucked in a little bit more.

Barring Diddy’s useless refrains and screams on this record, I do like this remix a bit. The video has a cool factor to it that I appreciate — even Britney doing her best “sista-girl” styled up robotic moves doesn’t make me hate the song any more. Her robotic voice, along with robotic presence, say a lot about her swag and stature. The sampling of her refrain of “Britney, bitch” really gives the song its life. will.i.am is not only trying to get that Z100 money, he’s also coming for that Hot 97 money, too. We see you, sir. We see you.

Out of all the newest guests added to the song, Lil’ Wayne kills it. Hit-Boy’s presence is more so for marketing of some sort I feel like, now that he’s trying to break into rapping fame. Waka is just purely there for energy level, obviously.

will.I.am is whatever to me, but dude makes catchy pop songs, and really, that’s what it’s all about in this day and age. Will this song age well? Naw. But for now, in the words of Diddy, “TURN UP BITCH!”

Bilal Gets “Back To Love” With His New Jazz Influenced Soul Single

I LITERALLY was JUST listening to Bilal’s first album again last night, and I’m greeted with a new Bilal single this morning. “Back To Love” is his latest musical outing, taken from his upcoming album Surreal.

Bilal’s voice takes it typical timbre with the jazzed out kick heavy track also sharing prominence with his subdued vocal this time around. He finds a nice pocket and rides it out on this cut, and I like it. It fits Bilal’s musical pedigree in that it’s definitely not anything “straight ahead” — I almost felt like he was going to start scatting halfway through. I like it. He’s released a mixtape in the past few months that had some interesting covers and whatnot, but I’m glad Bilal is courting a jazzier sound on this record.

Not sure how indicative of Surreal this single is, but Bilal has a penchant for pushing his artistry past the mainstream, so I’m hoping for a bit more of that while still retaining his classic voice.

I hear Maxwell is closer to putting out new music — that’d be quite a great combo for my music library this year. I’m just saying!
