    • Whitney Houston Shines & Sparkles In Trailer For “Sparkle”; Will You Watch?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Apr 2, 12

R.I.P. to one the greatest to ever do it, Whitney Houston.

In her last movie role ever, Whitney Houston has taken center stage with her passing in the upcoming reboot of the 70′s movie Sparkle.

Whitney shines and there’s a clip of her singing “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” as well that appears in the trailer. Set for release on August 17th, 2012, Sparkle also stars Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, and Tika Sumpter as the singing sisters. It also features appearances by Cee Lo Green, with new music from all 3 of the musical acts featured. Shot in Detroit, the trailer appears to be accurate of the time period that the original project evoked.

Hopefully this will be a breakout movie for Jordin Sparks, and a final and living testament to the greatness that was Whitney Houston, no matter how she passed from us. I cannot wait to see this movie, as I love projects like this, period. It may be a rehash of “Dreamgirls_-esque proportions, but I’d be ok with that. Hearing Whitney one last time gave me chills. Rest in peace Nippy.

Will you be seeing this remake? Have you seen the original? Take the poll below, and weigh in!

Trailers: Jennifer Hudson Stars As Winnie Mandela In “Winnie”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Nov 16, 10

I’m not sure if I am completely sold on this…I watched it a couple of times, but I don’t think this is going to be very good.

“Winnie” is the story of Winnie Mandela, the wife to anti-apartheid activist and legendary figure Nelson Mandela. She herself has a long history as an activist and rose to fame herself as an activist and also served sometime in jail as well for her role in the burgeoning democratic movement ignited by her husband and his imprisonment.

Winnie was working at Baragwanath Hospital as a social worker when she met the charismatic young lawyer, Nelson Mandela. It was love at first sight. Their passionate courtship was romantic as well as chaotic. Often interrupted by his own ambitious political intentions, Nelson was relentless in his pursuit of Winnie. In the early years of their marriage, she had to learn to survive on her own, as Nelson toured the country urging an anti-apartheid message, while building his legacy and the loyalty of millions. After Nelson’s notable arrest and imprisonment in 1962, Winnie also became a political prisoner and was held in solitary confinement for nearly two years. (Source)

Will you be going to check this out? Can Jennifer pull off such a weighty role as the title character?

Movies: Spend The Next 15 Minutes Watching “This Time” — The Time Will Be Well Spent.

Written by The IPS in Movies on Sep 24, 10

A good friend of the Tha Feedback, up-and-coming film director, producer & writer Matthew Cherry and his Cherry Entertainment shingle produced an awesome short film this past year that has been making the festival circuit to great acclaim called “This Time”. I kid you not when I say that it is a good way to spend 15 minutes of your lunch break today. It’s a short but gripping and poignant reflection upon the sacrifices that our soldiers make for our country, spun amongst a story that both civilians and non-civilians can relate to. It’s very well done, and it’s totally self-financed. Regan Gomez-Preston (“Parenthood”) (who also wrote this project), Terri J. Vaughan (“Steve Harvey Show”), and a few other familiar faces round out this cast.

“This Time” is a short film written by Reagan Gomez-Preston and directed by Matthew A. Cherry. It stars Reagan Gomez, Michael Moss, Terri J. Vaugn, and Sinorice Moss.

This Time deals with the realities that many people have to face when a loved one returns home from war and everything has changed.

This film is dedicated to the men and women who have given their lives to protect our country. And their family members with whom their memory lives on.

Kudos to cast and crew for this amazing piece of work. Support Black entrepreneurs and visionaries by spreading this link, and let’s get the viewing numbers up. I want to see this higher than some of these coon dances we click over and over again…you can do it! LOL.

Trailers: “For Colored Girls” Hits Theaters November 5th

Written by The IPS in Movies on Sep 15, 10

Tyler Perry is a genius. Take that as you will, but I won’t expound any more LOL. I mean that in certain ways, but let me say this — Lionsgate loves that man!

Anyway, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” was a “choreopoem” written by Ntozake Shange that was made into a theater production, a book, and has now made the leap to the big screen. Tyler Perry purchased the rights and wrote, produced, and directed this film. There was a large outcry initially because Tyler was the one behind it, but if this trailer is any indication, this might be actually really good. It stars a BEVY of Black female star power. Tyler keeps US working. Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington…there’s a whole lot more too.

The choice of music for this trailer is also stunning. We will see what Tyler pulls out for this one. I know they pushed up the release date to make it eligible for all the big award ceremonies, so hopefully the rush was worth it. I’m going to go read the book before the movie comes out…anyone want to join me?

Trailers: NOT Coming To A Theater Near You — “Stomp The Yard: Homecoming”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Jun 18, 10

Despite a decent budget and even a cameo from the original star Columbus Short, the cameo-heavy sequel to “Stomp The Yard” will NOT be getting a theatrical release. That’s right, another one bites the dust. The trailer is the first peek that we get of this movie, and honestly, I’m not nearly caring as much as I thought I would. I was all ready to go in on how our movies sometimes don’t even get a chance, but then I saw this trailer and I’m over it.

Does it look bad? No. But it definitely looks like a Redbox special and so someone had the smarts to realize this and do JUST that. LOL!

September 21st, “Stomp The Yard: Homecoming” aka “Stomp The Yard 2″ hits a bootleg man near you. LOL or Netflix. Your choice.

“Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” Movie Coming Soon? This Trailer/Promo Is FRESH

Written by The IPS in Movies on Jun 9, 10

This had the Internet going nuts like Paul Wall back in the day when it hit today…except for no one knows what it is for. Video game? Movie? What?

After some scouring, I found this:

Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short “Mortal Kombat” film (subtitled “Rebirth”) that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year’s Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word “Kombat” already a trending topic on Twitter. (Source)

I’m ALL for this, because this looked DOPE. As technology progresses, all of the fantasy stories that we read and played as we were younger can REALLY be brought to life. I’m still enjoying “G.I. Joe”. Don’t judge me. But this is the kind of movie treatment that MK needed the first time around.

Watch it in HD — it’s pretty dope.

It’s Easy To Forget That Eddie Murphy Is Funny…

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Movies on May 20, 10

Eddie Murphy was on Jay Leno last night to promote “Shrek Forever After”, the latest and last in the line of “Shrek” movies. Sidenote: Can you believe I’ve never seen a Shrek movie?

That’s good and all that, go see the movie, but I really thought Eddie was funny during this interview. Naturally. It wasn’t forced or anything. His impressions were spot on, too. It reminded that despite his latest flops in the theatres, dude has history and his standup was always hilarious. I own every Eddie Murphy from back in the day too. I quote “Boomerang” daily.

Still, he’s barking up the wrong tree with these rumors of him writing a “Nutty Professor 3″. Yikes.

And 8 kids!? I didn’t know he had that big of a family…and I didn’t know he played instruments. Cool interview.

Mary J. Blige Will Play Nina Simone In Biopic “Nina”

Written by The IPS in Movies on May 13, 10

Mary J. Blige has signed up for another film role, and I personally feel it may be the one she was born to play. Just like Jamie Foxx excelled as Ray Charles in “Ray” — I think “Nina” could be Mary’s breakout role and could cement her as a multi-hyphenate if they can pull it off right.

Nina Simone was an acclaimed composer, pianist, singer, songwriter, activist, and more. She passed about 5 years ago, but her legacy lives on:

R&B songstress Mary J. Blige will tune up her jazz vocals after signing to star in Cynthia Mort’s “Nina,” a movie about legendary singer Nina Simone.

Mort’s script focuses on Simone’s relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by David Oyelowo, backers said. (Source)

I’m hopeful for this! Visually, Mary can pass as a Nina Simone look-alike and while the jazz/piano chops may be hard to imitate, she could probably learn (close approximations of) them. This is a role that Mary MAY be able to pull off. I’m willing to give her a chance.

She may not be the perfect person — if not, who would you all suggest? Throw some ideas out.

Trailers: Bow Wow Has The Golden Ticket in “Lottery Ticket”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Apr 2, 10

Bow Wow returns to the screen with the upcoming “The Lottery Ticket”. Apparently it features every black actor who didn’t make the casting for “First Sunday”. Ice Cube decided to bring Christmas early for them!

Loretta Devine is SO much better than this LOL, I’m just glad Clifton Powell isn’t in it.

Kevin Carson (Bow Wow), a young man living in the projects, wins $370 million in a nationwide lottery. When his opportunistic neighbors discover he has the winning ticket in his possession, Kevin must survive their greedy and sometimes even threatening actions over a three-day holiday weekend before he can claim his prize.

Hmm, this looks like one of those movies that all the funny parts are in the trailer, but…support Black cinema.

I just feel like Terry Crews is NEVER going to win an Oscar.

Trailers: Queen Latifah & Common In “Just Wright”

Written by The IPS in Movies on Mar 10, 10

I’m in, this looks semi-interesting. And Common as an athlete? That’s new. Queen Latifah, I do so love her though, so I’m down.

“Just Wright” revolves around a sports trainer (Latifah) who finds herself falling in love with a professional basketball player (Common) while rehabilitating him from a career threatening injury. Things are further complicated because her closest friend (Patton) is also pursuing him.

But I LOVE me some Paula Patton! Yes, yes I do. “Just Wright” hits theaters May 14th. Glad to see a non-corny movie getting some screen time indeed.

Is anyone going to see “Our Family Wedding” with Lance Gross and America Ferrara this weekend? I think I want to see that and “The Green Zone” with Matt Damon personally…some zone out time would be nice!
